Dear Newly,
I'm surprised no one has responded to your post, so I'll come out of the woodwork to do so.
The world is indeed more dangerous and I fear for my children growing up in these times. At least when I was young, the enemy was one, and was detered by MAD. Now, our enemies are mad, in large measure, and that scares me.
But you said it. You do what you have to do when the time comes to face some peril. No use dwelling on it in the safety of our homes.
Until then, consider this prayer, carried by Eleanor Roosevelt during WWII -
Dear Lord,
Lest I continue
My complacent way,
Help me to remember that somewhere,
Somehow out there
A man died for me today.
As long as there be war,
I then must
Ask and answer
Am I worth dying for?
Finding your own answer to this question will boost your spirits and assuage some of that fear we all face, I think.
