What exactly 'is' a short squeeze? Simply put, it is when multiple traders short a stock thinking it will be going down. However, not only are these traders "wrong", they are VERY wrong and the stock begins to move upwards at a rapid pace. When this occurrs, they are forced to try and "cover" (buy shares) which then only makes the price go up quicker. It is truly a bad spot to be in.

Have you ever tried to buy into a stock when the momentum is really moving upwards? If you have, then you know that when there is truly strong momentum behind a move, it can be very hard to purchase shares. Now put yourself in the shoes of someone who is short and NEEDS to buy. Each and every time they try and buy and can't, it is literally losing them money! Ouch!

Thanks to Lot78, Inc. (LOTE), we have a perfect 'real life' example of what an actual short squeeze looks like.

The stock traders who decided to "go short" on that large volume day were all essentially being "trapped". From that point forward, the price has continued to make higher highs and higher lows. Not good if you are short! Thus far, the price has moved 333.5% against the short traders. It could certainly become more, but at the time of this publishing, these are the numbers. Ouch!
