RE:"An AMD investor should be interested in its ability to generate earnings over a steady period of time instead of little but losses. The market cap numbers you cite are simply an evaluation by investors that AMD has little promise of generating a good earnings stream"
Man, you ain't kiddin'.
For that to happen AMD would have to have a superior product to Intel over an extended time and actually be able to market it.
Ref:"Tech has been an "Apple" house since they ordered their first PC many years ago. It used to drive me crazy when I would visit campus, to see all those Apple machines (when I worked for Intel). Apple has been entrenched there forever."
Well, they do have to have computers that the football team can use.
"To get to 80, it had to get to 50, so Zeev was right again!!! :)))"
It already HAD RUN UP TO 50 FROM 16. He said it was going back to 30. It backed off a couple points and now hit 80.
He also blew the last 6 months of the NASDAQ run up.
REF:"Zeev is uncanny. He is correct most all of the time."
Most all the time?
About a month ago he said SNDK was going to 30 from 50. Now it's pushing 80. Of course there is the time until the end of the year.
In defense of Zed, he's a short term trader with stops. Not an Intel buy and hold kind of guy.
Oh gee Chipguy...I'm sure you were thinking where my brains were...lol
Honestly I really like the Banias. I think Intel should actually jack up the Mhz on the Banias and sell it as a desktop chip. Phase out the P4. That way they wouldn't have to worry about keeping one benchmark ahead of AMD and putting out paper emergency edition P4s.
Techman
Ref:"Given that Banias puts a spank on similarly clocked
Athlons and Opterons with 2x or more higher power
dissipation it would be quite humiliating for AMD if
it were simply an 8+ year old core with faster FSB
and better cache. ;^)"
If that's true then the Banias must really kick ass on the P4 with it's lame IPC.
Ref:"The Banias is a completely new design"
That's really just a matter of degree. Call it what you want. It took it's brains from a P-III.
Techman
REF:"Is anything from AMD actually original?"
Jerry Sanders was an original.
REF:"do realize AMD has had 9 quarters of no profit?"
Doesn't matter...it's the suckers perception of "potential survival" that counts. hehe
BGRIX - American century global natural resources fund.
Looks like SNDK has broken out again.
RE:"On a slightly different perspective, though, how many companies can you see taking AMD's server processors seriously when they are packaged like a $10 toy at the mall?"
Right, they should have packaged them in a hardwood box lined with velvet with a bow.
Will the 940 and 939 socket be mechanically the same?
Well, JDSU made a jump when the CEO quit. Not sure if this is a good sign or not. I really haven't have any luck with Canadian companies...I do have a nice profit in this one though but think I might move on.
ERF:" JDSU, Your joking Right?"
No, but I'm inclined to dump...
JDSU
buy, dump, hold?
"This market is really nutz..."
Not a tenth as nutz as Real Estate...that will be short city soon.
RE:"echo bubble in techs.lmao.wsj."
Just short covering...no bubble.
Just let it ride Zeev, money coming out of bonds and into stocks. Likely see NASDAQ 2000 before the end of the year. IMHO.
Also a lot of short covering rally so far...but those are very powerful, too.
Stop losses are always a good idea.
What's your tactic now that Sandisk has hit 60 rather than 30?
What's a "dude" chip? Something to do with Surfer slang?
REF:"Exceptional stock performance on high volume again today, holding up in after hours. The question is: Can this run continue? What do you think?"
I think it can continue to 11...slight correction, then on to 20-25 before the end of the year.
Tech
REF:"Shorts are covering because AMD has aquired enough cash to stay in buissness for one more year, also convertible bonds have established a strong base a $7.00+. The stock is rising on A64-opteron hype both of which will not contribute to the bottom line for another six months. If the launch turns into a multi socketed nightmare then I see the stock giving up some if not most of its gains.jmho"
Your first statement is likely the most correct.
ref:'SNDK is in a down channel, I think there is a good chance of seeing $30 again this year."
Based on a 4 day correction?
A 50% retracement only takes it to 36.
ref:"The catch is if the AMD's window of opportunity is too short, Dell will stay loyal to its old allies (Intel). That is what happened to Athlon. If AMD64 becomes a serious force, Dell will recompute its interests and will start using AMD in no time."
Exactly, AMD needs to get ahead and stay ahead for a long time to gain significant share. Over the short run, Intel can ward off AMD easily, with FUD and advertising partnership.
ref:I must admit even I am amazed by the power of the Intel brand when it comes to Centrino"
How well is it selling? Do we have any independent survey results or is Intel just telling us how ell it's selling?
ref:"AMD product would have to command compared to an Intel product to make up for the added cost of service and support it obviously was not worth it, this is a lesson Gateway had to learn the hard way."
Gateway put their faith in a cow too. They got caught in a downdraft and Dell killed them. Intel stepped in and seized the moment and made them a deal they couldn't refuse. I know several people with AMD based Gateways and they have been flawless.
People keep saying the cost of supporting AMD is a problem.
Seems to me they could just hire some techs to handle AMD systems and direct callers there. Besides than, Dell is farmimg mpst of there tech out to India at a greatly reduced cost.
RE:"Dell's biggest advantage is having no inventory and consequently immediate ability to respond to market changes."
This works aainst them when component prices rise.
I wonder how fast they could make a Opteron/A64 system?
Well, I didn't really expect any inside information but Intel did have a lot of trouble with the .18u process but the .13u process was easier. If generations alternate the .09u is due for trouble.
Does anyone have a take on how Intel's .90u process is coming along? Prescott seems to be dissipating a lot of heat.
Maybe it's back to the .18u days when Intel had trouble.
Well, a number of network stocks like GLW, NT, JNPR, CNXT recently doubled and tripled because it became evident they may survive. I feel there is a lot of doubt out there whether AMD will survive. They are bleeding pretty badly. Any profit, even if it came at the hands of cost cutting would greatly enhance the stock. Clearly management has waited to cut to the bone hoping their new chip and a turn around in the chip sector would rise their boat. In my opinion, they could run out of time.
ref:"What investors are really looking for is proof of survivability"
At this point you are absolutely correct. If AMD could turn any profit the stock would double. Intel, on the other hand, is a known survivor and hype would mean a lot more.
