Maybe some people just like to figure out stuff...to prove they can.
New use for Omniweb.
Buy.com's reciently launched online music service BuyMusic.com has blocked Mac users access to it's website. "In order to take full advantage of BuyMusic.com's offerings you must be on a Windows Operating System using Internet Explorer version 5.0 or higher." This is not to say the site is not accessable via a Mac. Users of OmniWeb can simply change the HTTP and Javascript identifiers in the compatibility section of the preferences to IE6 for Windows. MacMerc.com has published a tutorial containing instructions outlining how to view the site in Safari by changing the user agent via the Terminal. I have tried this method and it works perfectly.

Panther news.
Tuesday, July 29, 2003
Apple has confirmed Mac OS X 10.3, will not be a fully 64-bit operating system reports The Register. Panther will be a 32-bit operating system tweaked to support 64-bit addressing using the same technique implemented in Mac OS X 10.2.7, the version of the Apple operating system that will ship with the first 64-bit Power Mac G5s. Mac OS X 10.2.7, codenamed 'Smeagol', is a 32-bit OS, but certain libraries and other elements have been recoded to allow it to make use of the 64-bit addressing provided by the G5's 64-bit IBM PowerPC 970 processor.

BuyMusic.com Downloaders Face Problems
Tuesday, July 29, 2003
Early customers at BuyMusic.com have found they can't transfer the tunes they have purchased onto portable music players reports USA Today. "The Mac-only iTunes has won raves for ease of use, both in burning CDs and transferring songs to Apple's iPod players. But BuyMusic's tracks have started out as unplayable, even on portables lent to the press in a promotional blitz." Mac users can now access the BuyMusic.com website, though downloads from the site are still limited to Windows users. "You Must be on a Windows Platform using IE 5 or above to download music on BuyMusic.com."
fibait,
Why give the caca the satisfaction of wrecking a perfectly good board and chasing you away from your old home? Everything seems to be working a lot better now "over there" and you know what to do to clean up the caca. That still works, too.
No law against posting in more than one place either. You know you lurk anyway to see what Mac news Z and Ruddy have to offer. You also know the reasons why they choose not to join the exodus.
Hey Matt,
Leopards eventually show their spots, don't they?
Also, can someone moderate a board from the jailhouse? Or is it like voting. Once convicted of a felony, a person can never enjoy the privileges of our democratic system.
Just curious.
Your friend,
Tulipz
I think you should send
a thank you note to Raging Bull.
Your friend
Tulipz
Now Matt,
That was a knee-jerk reaction, unbefitting a person who wields power. You should read my post objectively instead of just yanking like that. It contains very good business advice that you could profit by.
Your friend
Tulipz
Bob,
FWIW...If subscriptions are truly the main source of revenue for iHub, it might behoove management to actually operate like a business, rather than a club, and give people a reason to open their wallets.
That would mean NURTURING new "freebee" posters (potential new sources of revenue), rather than judging them, and giving them benefit of the doubt, rather than allowing them to be harassed and kept from posting on certain boards run by Machivellian "moderators."
But for this, I would have become a subscriber right away when the RB exodus began...and you would be nearly $100 bucks richer and closer to your goals! I'm sure a lot of others feel this way, too. It's not a very good deal to have to pay for abuse and then, adding insult to injury, taken to the woodshed (for trying to report that abuse) by an administrator who you thought was there to protect you ...and keep the playing field level.
JMHO
Scarlett,
I tried about six times to post this, but the posts were removed each time. My friend says there are lots of savvy investors, good conversations and no name calling (women participants, too). The board is MXIM on Yahoo. I don't know why it wasn't okay to post this info.
Tulipz.
ruellit,
we they sure need SOMETHING over there if they're going to fix what ails them.
Ruellilt,
I did that...several times, but haven't got an answer. I thought perhaps he looks at this board more often.
Also...this is the Q&A board, isn't it?
Is it illegal to tell another poster where they might find a good board for stock discussions (in answer to a request for th is information)? I have tried to acknowledge the request but each time I do, the post is removed. I actually didn't want to post the board name publicly so I asked for an email address to send it to. Is that also against the TOU?
This is a mighty tough room is all I can say... when innocent posts are removed as fast as you can make them.
Hi Scarlett,
I hope you don't leave as I enjoy talking stocks with you. I'll ask my friend about stock discussions. You have a great weekend, too.
Tulipz
Thanks, Susie
that board is only only to "premium" members and I haven't decided whether to make a committment yet. Still trying the site on for size.
Sara, thanks for the invite.
is that it's official name...the baseball board?
I dont' think so either. em
Thank you, Sara
Now why didn't I think of that?
Go Seattle Mariners!
Scarlett,
Your trading history reminds me so much of somebody I know. I would love to get her to come over here and have a discussion with you--she is also a serious investor and actually knows quite a bit of stuff about investing (unlike me). She was even quoted yesterday on Marketwatch.
You guys could have some great discussions.
I have a complaint for Matt.
How can I eliminate the annoying sound effects that come with every post made by acesteele on the MSFT board? I'm going to have to quit reading his posts if I can't get rid of the obxoxious gunfire, explosions and "duhs"... among other things.
This one's funny..
Microsoft uses Linux servers!

Scarlett,
Thanks for your perspective and i'm glad you "broke even." I'm a serious investor, too, but lack the expertise (and guts) to trade on margin, or deal with options, etc. I know there are stocks out there that are "ready to break out"...like GIGM, which everybody is hot on now. But their 52-week low is 20 cents! I just don't like to gamble with iffy stuff. And that stock is way overbought.
Re tech. I think when the analysts say to forget it...it's the time to buy. Somewhere I heard that tech is one-third of the U.S. economy so to rule it out is a beeg meestake.
tulipz
Okay steele, you win.
Microsoft was never the most admired company and still isn't (with good reason). Satisfied?
End of thread.
Cracking Windows password. Will the
security problems never end?

I found this post
on another board...posted by OhRick. Thought it very insightful. It was in answer to a query about why Balmer sold so many shares in such a short time.
“I think Balmer knows the real party is over and it's time to leave others holding the bag. If I read the recent article in the Wall Street Journal correctly earnings have been inflated by this company by including the amount insiders pay for stock that they have been given for options at the purchase price. That's great for the company but results in dilution for common shareholders. Now that there are billions of shares and Gates, Balmer and Allen have been selling billions of dollars worth of shares that won't work like it did in the past. Therefore a new strategy of giving insiders shares outright will be used. They can restate prior earnings and the stock price should drop and or remain stable and they can adjust things to their benefit later. "
Hey Scarlett, Good for you to be interested in even the MSFT "bashers" opinions. To hear both sides is the only smart way to get a sense of...anything, actually.
I did really great with MSFT in the 90's and thought it would never end. I had unshakable faith in the company until the antitrust case where it was proven that the company's way of eliminating competition was not only anti-competitive bully tactics, but illegal--and the courts held up that decision. I also was disappointed that the company didn't settle the case when it was just about Netscape. This dragging on and expanding of the case over years has hurt investors a lot and tarnished the company's reputation (it was once the "most admired company in America" in the minds of consumers).
When the tech bubble burst, I lost over half of my portfolio's value, which at the time consisted of only MSFT stock. That said, the stock did a lot better over the next three years than most and didn't tank totally like some of them. Like you, I too have been looking at other financial boards and find that many people feel that the company is now mature and too cumbersome and bureaucratic to innovate and many also feel that Balmer's leadership is more suitable to Procter & Gamble, rather than a tech company...so I'm looking to switch to younger, hungrier companies, or stick with the index funds.
Who knows what's next?
fung_fu
Methinks you protest too much.
maybe tulipz is not what you really need wrapped around your... members.
Fung,
I wasn't referring to you. I'm sure you are a fine upstanding gentleman.
Steeeeele,
I wasn't talking about Forbes Magazine. I was talking about the public perception of the company before it went afoul of the law. And I said "once was" not "currently is". I could find more "proof" but am not inclined to waste my time playing games with you.
http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/1997/Nov97/pollpr.asp
Also...where is the post you were replying to?
What are you referring to?
Oh, yeah. Post #405. Strangely missing.
(MSFT used to be #1 on that lis btw)
ONEBGG,
Well, thanks for acknowledging my post. Everyone would love a rosy outlook on all things...but some of the realities are far from rosy.
Also, sometimes they like to kill the messenger. Which is okay, if you have nine lives.

That's not such a far-fetched idea. The hackers that wreaked havoc on RB are here...and the worst of the lot was kicked off. Wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't plotting revenge.
Susie924,
I would tell you but that would be naughty of me. It probably fits the descriptiion of many of them, however.
Excellent point sarals.
I agree with you but don't feel free to elaborate.
Sorry Matt,
I guess I misunderstood the meaning of you post about "having trouble with moderators lately." You also asked for thoughts on whether you should code it so moderators couldn't replace what you removed. I thought that was a pretty good idea to solve the "trouble" and I replied.
My reading comprehension skills must need improvement because it appears you have things well under control and don't need input from me.
