When we changed our name to YRC Freight, one of our first priorities was listening to customers and responding to your needs. Network enhancements in early April reflected that approach – we made the changes necessary to significantly improve the consistency and reliability of our service. The results? An increase in on-time pickups, deliveries and safe shipments.
“That’s what our customers say is most important,” says Jeff Rogers, president of YRC Freight. “What they really want is the peace of mind of knowing a shipment with a two-day or a three-day service standard will deliver on time.”
“The network improvements mean more reliability for our customers,” says Mitch Lilly, senior vice president-operations for YRC Freight. “YRC Freight is getting back to doing what we do best, which is serving customers in the 500 to 3,500 mile longhaul market.”
Along with focusing on what we do best, YRC Freight is moving forward by:
Simplifying the process of working with us, beginning with the very first shipment. With business picking up, we have streamlined the system for bringing new customers into our network. This is good news for all of us. As the trade maxim goes, freight moves freight and our network is built for density.
Hiring the finest professionals in the industry. YRC Freight is growing, bringing back professionals who lost work during the recession and adding new expertise to the team.
Improving response time when there is a service issue.
Reducing costs to continue building on our recent success.
What’s next? Look for the best to get even better. The YRC Freight team remains focused on delivering confidence to you and all our customers with every shipment, every day.
Making connections that matter
Along with the services YRC Freight provides to association members, we work with National Purchasing Partners (NPP), a member-based group purchasing organization owned by the non-profit Virginia Mason Medical Center. Membership in NPP is free and growing: The organization has more than 80,000 registered members, including small to mid-sized companies and non-profit organizations.
The non-profit vertical is a natural for NPP and an appealing aspect of the partnership for YRC Freight.
“The vast majority of our profits go back to good things at the medical center – such as contributing to the research being conducted into auto-immune diseases,” says Niko Sievers, national account manager for NPP.
By facilitating business between vendors and members, Sievers says NPP makes connections easier, simplifying success. He also says YRC Freight is a popular benefit for members in all NPP vertical markets, particularly those in the construction area.
“It’s a great service for a construction company that needs a part or piece of machinery sent from the headquarters to a job site,” Sievers says. “Our members appreciate YRC Freight.”
Mike Cox:
Confidence Delivered®
For many YRC Freight customers, the face of our company is their driver. Mike Cox, a city driver who works out of our Richmond, Va., terminal, is one of only 16 people honored with a Confidence Delivered award for the first quarter of 2012.
Jim Cheek, the terminal manager, says Cox is the consummate city driver, with a thorough knowledge of his service area and first-name relationships with most customers.
“Mike manages his route area as if it were his own business,” says Cheek. “He keeps in touch with his accounts by phone during the day in case he is running later than normal or to advise them of delivery schedules. All of the customers know they can depend on Mike to deliver to them timely and damage free.”
Congratulations to Mike Cox and all our YRC Freight Confidence Delivered award winners!

freight benefits
If your company belongs to an industry or trade association, good news! Groups that work with YRC Freight are able to offer members the advantage of our comprehensive North American network at a substantial savings.
It’s a big deal for your big shipments.
“Freight benefits are an important added-value for associations to offer, so this is a true win-win – good for the industry and trade groups and their members,” says Bill Schwar, vice president of exhibit and association sales. “We tailor a program to meet the specific needs of each association and their members, ensuring the supply chain solution that best meets their business needs.”
Schwar says elements of YRC Freight’s customized services for associations can include everything from direct-contact campaigns and service flyers to ads and website collateral.

Email invoices save time, money
Going green? That’s great! Going green in a way that saves time and money? Even better! YRC Freight encourages you to cut down on paper while you add up the benefits: Switch today to email invoices. The move reduces the environmental impact of printed invoices; cutting the amount of paper we consume eliminates the related waste and pollution.
Email invoices also deliver important benefits to your accounts payable department, such as speeding up the invoicing time and minimizing paperwork.
You’ll find the simple sign-up for email invoices here.
Customer kudos: School Zone
With years of experience shipping to big box retailers, regional grocery chains, hobby stores and other customers, School Zone Publishing Company knows how to make educated moves. The company publishes workbooks, software and flashcards for preschool and elementary students.
For years, YRC Freight has been School Zone’s preferred domestic carrier, so when the company needed to ship into Canada, it made the call to YRC Freight.
The sales representative on the account quickly put School Zone in touch with the YRC Freight Broker-Inclusive team. Kevin Szczepanek, shipping manager for School Zone, says the sign-up process for broker-inclusive was easy and the results have been great.
“The YRC Freight broker-inclusive process has benefitted us because it’s simple,” Szczepanek says. “For international shipments, all I have to do is fill out an extra piece of paperwork and make a phone call to the broker team to let them know it’s coming and that’s all. It’s as easy as a regular domestic shipment.”
Check out this short video and discover how simple shipping to Canada can be when you work with the carrier who is the Best at the Border!
Industry news
U.S. manufacturing slows in May
The Institute for Supply Management’s PMI for manufacturing came in weaker for May, registering
53.5--down slightly from 54.8 in April. It was well above the key midpoint of 50 (marking the point between expansion and contraction in the sector), but the trend in the manufacturing reading for May was arguably moving in the wrong direction.

First quarter GDP was revised downward
The first quarter for the United States was not as strong as the Federal Reserve had originally thought. The first quarter revision was issued last week and the first quarter GDP growth rate fell to 1.9 percent. Economists generally still believe that the U.S. will end the year with an annual growth rate of about 2.5 percent if global conditions can stabilize.

A beaming ray of light: Retail sales
If there was a ray of sunshine in May, it would have come in the retail sales figures. Same store retail sales for May were up by 4.4 percent, a figure that surprised many analysts. Retailers across nearly all segments reported stronger sales for the month, an indication that the consumer is benefitting from warmer weather and dropping retail gasoline prices.
