09:39 ET QLGC QLogic earnings clouded by possible Fujitsu sale of HDD unit - Merrill (32.60 -2.70)
Stock is notably weak this morning, likely due to a pre-open note from Merrill Lynch that said Fujitsu's announcement that it would like to sell its HDD biz increases the uncertainty for QLGC's earnings; firm believes MXO, which does not use QLGC's HDD controllers, is the most likely buyer of the Fujitsu unit.
Applied Materials says plans 165 layoffs
(Reuters 01/30 12:46:58)
NEW YORK, Jan 30 (Reuters) - Applied Materials Inc.
<AMAT.O>, the world's largest maker of microchip production
equipment, plans to cut 165 jobs at its Austin, Texas,
facility, according to a filing the company made with state
officials.
The Santa Clara, California-based company, which has about
14,000 employees, filed notice with the Texas Workforce
Commission on Wednesday that intends to lay off the employees.
Jeff Lettes, a spokesman for Applied Materials, declined to
give further details on the job cuts.
On November 4, Applied Materials responded to the weakest
industry conditions on record by trimming its staff by about
1,750 positions, which was 11 percent of its global work force
at the time.
