This sure isn't ASG's Intel any more.
Amen I sold most my shares before the recent run up, so it looked stupid on my part.
Does anyone else believe this fiasco might actually be good for both intel and and amd?
The performance hit seems to be mostly to servers and virtual machine based systems, so definitely upgrades. Ofcourse lawsuits for paying for less performance are sure to follow. probably a wash overall. Lots of new processors will have to be reworked adding cost. Maybe some bozos at google discovered something which State security has been using for years, what do I know.
One person's bug is another persons backdoor.
"ntel had previously said that in comparison to 14nm, 10nm would deliver a 25 percent increase in performance or cut power nearly in half. At IEDM, the company said 10nm increases drive current by 71 percent for NMOS transistors and 35 percent for PMOS."
Very impressive if true, it would be nice to start seeing some parts in the wild.
Thanks for your response and input.

Broadcom seems to think there is lots of value in Qualcomm despite the apple lawsuit . Broadcom investing in the USA last week to help with clearing regulations? 5 G going very well for QCOM? Intel claims to be on schedule also.

This will be faster and better than the top R7, but there may be a few problems. I don't want to puncture anyone's balloon and at least there will be something to salute.
Main problem seems to be the gamers lapping them up, first batch sold out in most retailers except for locked i5 and i3.
Intel's up 2.6% cuz....
I don't know maybe Core i7 8th generation has something to do with it, every Youtube tech jockey has samples and is awaiting for the Non- disclosure agreements to expire on Oct 5th to publish their results, youtube is going to be overloaded, rumor is it trounces Ryzen in most categories and is price competitive. Let the games begin. The mobile versions on microsoft surface machines and apple macbooks make for compelling reasons to get a new one.
As for the needing a new motherboard, well for anyone deciding between Ryzen and Coffeelake, that will be a complete non-issue, as Ryzen also requires a new motherboard.
How many people actually upgrade their CPU, other than some enthusiasts it almost never happens. If Intel comes out and states the new Z370 boards will support 10 nm CPU the enthusiast crowd will eat them up especially if 6 core 12 thread coffeelake destroys Rezen 8 core 16 thread in gaming and is at least equal in multitasking benchmarks. Ryzen7 prices are collapsing, competition is a good thing.
does a single person here besides me even believe in Intel?
I am afraid it's going to take some 10 nm product hopefully by the new year even if it's just almost pre production samples. That and maybe some of the acquisitions actually contributing to earnings.
Dell now selling 8th gen 13 inch XPS, 21 hrs battery life for 1080p screen?
Your welcome

When's that I8 coming
On laptops probably by October, on Desktop maybe by XMAS, on 10 nm maybe by next spring, just my opinion could be wrong. The big deal about I8 on laptops seems to be twice the cores for the same money and power consumption, it does sound appealing, maybe apple can finally properly upgrade their Macbook air 13 inch line up , which is still a good seller.
Thanks for the info, noticed mmoy had posted it earlier also. That LTE chip could find itself into a lot of other devices and vehicles also.
Just on Bloomberg, Intel to supply LTE chip for new i watch later this year.
Good Summary, Intel has always been good at making use of special codecs all the way back to the MMX codecs for video. It seems all the rage right now is about speech recognition , learning, data metaanalysis,; I don't know enough about this stuff to know how much of it is hype; Seems apple which no one will argue does not have an excellent CPU team is investing tons on speech recognition and learning. I hope Intel is not asleep and is reviewing what for the most part are software algorithms to see what special instructions can be implemented for huge speed, performance and quality improvements.
Thanks, 10 nm for mobile for XMAS, maybe.
is coffee lake 10 nm?
well stated, competition is always good even for the competitors.
Listening to Bloomberg, ARM to release new chip to take on Intel? Heard this before, to take on server market? Bloomberg cited 50% better performance from prior ARM based chips. Always a good headline.
I hope this pans out, quickest way to get broadband to rural areas, other option is new satellite constellations planned, these have always been overrated.
A truce?
well more likely has to do with Nvidia becoming a force to be reckoned with.
When all else fails don't support your old hardware/software; the windows way.
I guess the novelty has worn off even for slow learners.
They seem to last forever, and after the I-pad air increasing the resolution did not seem to make much difference in the quality of the experience. I still seem them all over the place upgrade cycle is probably every five years now.
Our newest rumour about the Surface Pro 5 is an interesting one indeed. Despite plenty of talk about the device getting Intel's latest Kaby Lake chips, it appears the Pro 5 might actually run on an AMD processor instead. The theory has emerged due to a trailer for Alien: Covenant which appears to show a Surface device. The film is sponsored by Intel's rival and the description reads "Intelligence powered by AMD, Ryzen and Radeon".
Pretty thin evidence.

I will probably see INTC go up from here, now that I have essentially bailed out.
The only way INTC goes over 40 from here is good news on 10 nm, profit upside warnings and optane being a homerun, but it looks like optane will be a double or triple at best.
Thanks for the reply, that's basically my approach, and where I stand.
Why would anyone bother with a glitchy platform and lower performance except on some rare workstation like workloads...
Because it's not intel and they hate intel, it will be interesting to compare a low end I5 with a similar priced 4 core Ryzen. Most of the overclockers can't get an 1800X past 4 GHz. Sorry to say a sold all my remaining INTC yesterday. If I see some good news about 10nm and the price falls enough to make the dividend attractive I will get back in. This mobileye stuff was the last straw I have no idea whether mobileye is worth it, what's wrong with INTC making the chips for them and making money that way.
"Intel Corporation today announced plans to invest more than $7 billion to complete Fab 42, which is expected to be the most advanced semiconductor factory in the world. The high-volume factory is in Chandler, Ariz., and is targeted to use the 7 nanometer (nm) manufacturing process. It will produce microprocessors to power data centers and hundreds of millions of smart and connected devices worldwide. The announcement was made by U.S. President Donald Trump and Intel CEO Brian Krzanich at the White House.
With all the doom and gloom you think Intel was going out of the semiconductor manufacturing business. Nothing wrong with sucking up to the donald a little.

"You know, I couldn't do it. I couldn't reduce it to the freshman level. That means we really don't understand it."
Richard Feynman
If Feynman could not understand it there is no way I can. Here is my super duper simplification. Quantum mechanics says it's possible to send information faster than the speed of light, but to do this you need to be able to observe entangled states in two different places at the same time. It also states making an observation changes everything, go figure.
"I ordered a 25-inch 2550x1440 monitor and it's in the shipping room. I don't like 27-inch monitors as I find them too big for my desk to have multiple displays. I may get another if I find that I like it. I haven't figured out where I'm going to put it though."
I have 10 year a 27 inch cinema display, with two 21 inch led Acer el cheapo displays on each side, works good for me. Rumor Apple may finally offer a new 4K or 5K display. Very sceptical about using a 43 inch 4K T.V. for a monitor but may give it a try for the holidays.
I'm running my main Windows application on a Windows 7 VM as I'm worried about the stability of Windows 10 - specifically as it commandeers your system to run updates at inconvenient times.
Biggest stream of Windows 10 updates I have experienced in a long while, so far I have had no major issues, but even with an SSD some of the updates took forever.
You know that Obama could have Not Bailed out the Banks and/or unwound the deals.
Speak for yourself.
My next CPU will likely be Skylake-X in about a year-and-a-half.
I am no expert, but I think 10 nm CPUs should be available by then.
People buying new machines with SSD are surprised they are just as if not more responsive than their phones and are noticing their internet connections are faster than they thought.
Intel just raised guidance on increasing P.C. demand ! eventually people replace their P.C.s, iphone 7 Verus iphone 6 who gives a heck.
Thanks
Just heard on Bloomberg Intel will not be usinf EUV at 10 nm. I don't think this is to unexpected, good and bad to this I guess. Good 10nm must to moving along well without the risk of using EUV. ASML taking a bit of a hit.

Intel is paying at least $350 million to buy deep-learning startup Nervana Systems
Hope they have better luck with this one, the smartwatch has not turned out so good. Nervana is also referred to as an AI firm.
