AMD still relevant?

Wow what a "doh" article.
Prof. GB
Who/what launched the Trefis simpletons?
Prof. GB
Intel has had an Arm license since the StrongArm DEC acq.
I've been threatened with a white jacket with some fashionable wraparound sleeves!
Samo-samo?
Prof. GB
I wonder if he has a monetary interest in Soitech?
Prof. GB
I love how the "experts" continue to second guess intel...and are proven wrong, time after time.
gb
I'm waiting for someone to sue for access to intel process/fab tech claiming essential facility. 11nm or before, IMO.
gb
IMO the naysayers will continue to say nay until the competition expresses its pain...typically thru a lawsuit.
gb
I expect 14nm demos at September IDF.
gb
My first harddrive was a 5m fixed 5m removable dishwasher sized unit (mds750?) for compiling fortran for a 8088/8087 global nav system in the early 80s.
gb
There are always people betting against intel. They usually lose those alleged bets.
gb
Oh I think WE is blowing smoke. As CG said he either is worried or should be.
22nm is going to be a real problem for the ARMy. 14nm will be fatal to many.
gb
Genius or hubris?
gb
Assuming he knows what he's doing I suspect his "bet" presumes nothing useful from IBM semi. They've now become largely irrelevant much to the dismay of the fab club.
gb
The hilarious part is that his "day job" is a SMB specialist providing systems and services to small biz.
He seems remarkably ignorant overall...but self-important for sure.
gb
that's what the money bags at atic think...
gb
Its semiconductor unit ATIC had an accumulated deficit of 4.1 billion dirhams ($1.12 billion)as of the end of 2011 and made losses in the past two years, Mubadala said in the filing.
"No assurance is given that ATIC will be profitable in 2012 or in subsequent years," Mubadala said in a section highlighting the risks associated with the business in its bond prospectus.

My daughter uses dual monitors for Photoshop and Lightroom and would never be without that capability. I'm likely to do dual monitors for my ham radio use as well.
You get spoiled fast...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort
I think one of issues is no one likes being subject to the whims of Silicon Labs who owns HDMI.
Plus DP is focused on trying to reduce power consumption, e.g. self refresh displays.
gb
Displayport v1.2 on IB supports chaining so if using chainable monitors the physical connector limits in a board should be moot.
gb
Although the presenters seem positive about their experiences it seems that Intel is tightly controlling the disclosure of performance.
Of course the product is not yet released so perhaps that isn't surprising...
gb
Negative IB? Where?
Did you not see that Dell is selling nearly 3x their forecast?
gb
Displayport on IB:

gb
I'm pretty sure it's on the chip. Perhaps not implemented on your board?
gb
Displayport daisy chaining supported in IB? I know DP is supposed to support this in some version.
gb
What was the basis for their doubts? The inability to run Crysis?
If there are 3 ports or even two that would be great for me.
gb
UBs just don't have the space to spare to do fiddling with options. The CPUs are also soldered rather than socketed.
gb
Once more:
Power goes like V^2. IB takes more V by design. OCers need not apply.
gb
I wouldn't place a lot of money on the line solely based on Steve's enthusiasm...
gb
+1
gb
I expect ivb represents what will happen as products are optimized on advanced processes. The curves shown by intel are not OC prescriptions. They show V vs speed tradeoffs for designers.
OC is largely history.
gb
What decade?
gb
What other metrics can you think of?
Come on! Consider this a mini-MDT!
Winner gets a SYS301.
gb
Fast is only one dimension of performance.
gb
Speed not sipped...
gb
Given the sipped with which they've achieved parity on an old process with an aged core and the documented problems by every other semi supplier I'd suggest Apple should be having serious discussions right now.
New chips on new processes and new libs/tools take time. By the time intel shows atom on 22nm Apple will be lucky to intercept 14nm.
That will not be pretty.
gb
Apple has changed twice before in the Mac line. They'll do it again or suffer the unpleasant consequences.
