"tobacco is a huge source of tax revenue and the FDA knows that and will tread lightly"
Yes and when Marijuana becomes a new and huge source of tax revenue this way of thinking will switch from tobacco to cannabis.
Also "Tobacco companies having lobbyists and lawyers"
Same here when Marijuana business starts growing exponentially they will have lobbyists and lawyers and first thing they will do is pay out/finance politics!
Politics need to finance their campaigns they don't care where the money comes from as long as it comes in..
all IMHO
Esad1 Maybe new head at the FDA did it?
Scott Gottlieb, President Donald Trump’s nominee for FDA commissioner
"Gottlieb has called for a faster approvals process for new drugs"...
....so maybe he is doing the same about regulating tobacco products

great! more exposure to the stock...
Keep it coming!
Thanks Esad1...
but I wished the article had mentioned XXII
Decided as well to add more this am at $1.84 (missed the 1.75 low )
Fully invested now, tempted to buy more on margin since it is a no brainer now but afraid of an imminent big market correction, that would probably take also xxii down, but if so it would be a great opportunity for us to buy more and for the big boys to buy /accumulate on the cheap.
Looks like XXII are their latest investment

Thanks for your insight , indeed we are not scientists ..
But it helps to see what others here think about it ..
and yes I agree with a previous reply by "Gilbe"
"Stripping out the nicotine makes the cigarette taste horrible."
Taste could be a big factor here ( I never smoked but could rely to that)
Thanks Biotech2 I can of understood that but maybe I miswrote my post (English is my second language):(
so in this case which technology is better (if they end up having the same end result) maybe they don't need to licence anything from us...they just do it a different way.....unless I am missing something here.
Thanks
So how does this compare to XXII technology??
Philip Morris Cos., the company now known as Altria, introduced an ultralow-nicotine cigarette called Next De-Nic, created through

I say make federal legalization of marijuana so that will take care of the problem...
Legalization advocates have long argued that regulating marijuana forces the industry out of the shadows and into the public eye, where the drug can be taxed and the black market effectively eliminated.
But because marijuana remains illegal in so many states, smugglers can take advantage of the patchwork of laws. A pound of marijuana might sell for about $2,000 in Colorado but could fetch three times as much in a large East Coast city.
Marijuana smuggling persists despite legalization
They’re mailing it, driving it and, in at least one case, flying it around in skydiving planes. They’re hiding it in truck beds and trunks and vacuum-sealing it to hide the smell as they pass police officers patrolling the interstates.
Many are starting in states where growing marijuana is legal, such as Colorado, and sending the drug elsewhere.

Great news but those 2 deadlines worry me...we are not rich yet!
Am I right or wrong? what does anybody think??
The FDA will release guidelines for what will be considered acceptable nicotine levels soon, and it expects a deadline of August 8, 2021 for combustible products and August 8, 2022 for non-combustible products to submit product reviews under those new guidelines

You are right I have 200 shares of AAPL bought around $65, so up over 100% on it and that takes care of my margin in case I go under.
So I understand that if I ever sell all my apple shares (which I won't) I would probably be without margin..
I have about 20 stocks ranging from penny stocks to $6 to Apple.
up 16% overall . to be honest I do understand margin but not sure how it works with DT Ameritrade all I know is I can buy on margin up to 30% to my total account value .
I bought XXII on Margin with TD ameritrade
Yes it's my guess that Canada will be heading this way too. but first comes full legalization by July 2018 then maybe full government control.

22nd Century Receives Guidance from FDA on Phase III Clinical Trials
Today 9:55 AM ET (Business Wire)
22nd Century Group, Inc. (NYSE MKT: XXII), a plant biotechnology company that is a leader in tobacco harm reduction, announced today that on June 20, 2017, the Company and its wholly owned subsidiary, Heracles Pharmaceuticals, participated in a meeting with the multi-discipline review team in the Division of Anesthesia, Analgesia, and Addiction Products at the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding the Company's Investigational New Drug Application (IND) for 22nd Century's X-22 prescription-based smoking cessation product in development so that it may become available for doctors to prescribe to help their patients to stop smoking. The meeting with the FDA/CDER was very positive and productive. FDA/CDER and the Company will work to reach agreement on the Company's design and implementation of two parallel, Phase III clinical trials to be conducted by the Company in various parts of the United States to show that the Company's X-22 prescription-based smoking cessation product will result in a more robust quit rate in smoking as compared to existing smoking cessation products that are already in the market in the U.S. The Company believes that it will be able to achieve such robust results.
Henry Sicignano, III, President and Chief Executive Officer of 22nd Century Group, stated, "The mission of our Company is to reduce the harm caused by smoking and we believe that we can help smokers to successfully stop smoking through the use of our novel X-22 smoking cessation product in development. We look forward to working collaboratively and closely with the FDA during 2017 regarding the approval of important aspects of the two parallel, Phase III clinical trials on X-22 that we intend to commence in the first half of 2018, subject to our determination of whether we will use funds from a third-party or Company funds to conduct such clinical trials. The public health implications of a smoking cessation product that is more robust in effectiveness than other existing smoking cessation products is enormous. We look forward to continuing to work closely with the FDA on this very important public health matter."

22nd Century Partners with The University of Virginia to Utilize Industrial Hemp to Clean Up and Reclaim Polluted Lands
Today 9:55 AM ET (Business Wire)Print
22nd Century Group, Inc. (NYSE MKT:XXII), a plant biotechnology company focused on tobacco harm reduction and cannabis research, announced today that, together with The University of Virginia (UVA), it has launched a project aimed at utilizing novel varieties of industrial hemp to clean up and reclaim abandoned mine lands and other polluted areas. These polluted lands will be returned to productive use and cultivation through a cost-effective, plant-based process known as "phytoremediation."
22nd Century has developed proprietary hemp plants that are particularly well-suited for use in phytoremediation. These plants feature rapid growth rates and are highly efficient at absorbing toxins, metals and other soil contaminants. Similar varieties of hemp proved extremely effective in helping to remediate the land after the nuclear accidents at Chernobyl, Ukraine and Fukushima, Japan. In addition to removing contamination, hemp's deep tap roots alter soil structure, aerate the soil, and add organic matter deep into the soil profile.
In the Commonwealth of Virginia and elsewhere throughout the Appalachians, coal mining and other environmentally damaging activities have left behind vast stretches of compacted, polluted and generally untillable soil. This summer, researchers at UVA and its affiliate, UVA at Wise, will begin testing industrial hemp varieties developed by the 22nd Century-UVA partnership to improve soils in Virginia. Because there are more than 30,000 sites that require soil remediation in the United States alone, phytoremediation is expected to become a significant area of business for 22nd Century. UVA and 22nd Century will also investigate other uses of their phytoremediation hemp plants in Virginia, including the production of fiber, oils and other high value products, thus creating lucrative secondary markets for 22nd Century.
Based at the UVA-Wise campus, this landmark project reaches beyond conventional hemp remediation applications because UVA and 22nd Century are employing their combined biotechnology expertise to produce improved proprietary hemp varieties that are specifically designed for soil remediation. Such novel and powerful proprietary plants promise to become a central tool in farmland decontamination initiatives around the world.
"Our phytoremediation-optimized varieties of industrial hemp will open up new and lucrative markets for 22nd Century," explained Dr. Paul Rushton, 22nd Century's Vice President for Plant Biotechnology. "We are enthusiastic about the prospect of applying our biotechnology expertise to a challenging environmental problem. We see phytoremediation as an opportunity for 22nd Century to do very well... by doing good for the Earth."
"We are very excited about using 22nd Century's industrial hemp plants for land reclamation in Southwest Virginia, where years of poor land management practices and industrial mining have devastated soil quality and fertility," explained Dr. Michael Timko, the principal scientific investigator at UVA. "This is also a tremendous opportunity to partner with UVA-Wise where Dr. Ryan Huish and his colleagues have been studying the problems of mining land reclamation. Industrial hemp farming provides a new approach to not only rejuvenating the land but also the local economy in key portions of the Commonwealth of Virginia."

22nd Century Meets with FDA on Modified Risk Tobacco Product Application for World's Lowest Nicotine Tobacco Cigarettes
Today 9:25 AM ET (Business Wire)Print
22nd Century Group, Inc. (NYSE MKT:XXII), a plant biotechnology company that is a leader in tobacco harm reduction, announced today that the Company and its wholly-owned subsidiary, Goodrich Tobacco Company, held yesterday a very encouraging and productive meeting with the Office of Science of the Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Based on written feedback received ahead of the meeting, and on the positive exchange between Goodrich and the FDA at the meeting itself, the Company will now move forward with a significantly expanded Modified Risk Tobacco Product (MRTP) application with the CTP/FDA for the Company's BRAND A Very Low Nicotine (VLN) cigarettes.
The World's Lowest Nicotine Tobacco Cigarettes
BRAND A VLN cigarettes contain less than 0.6 mg nicotine per cigarette and less than 0.05mg nicotine yield per cigarette. In each case, this represents a reduction of at least 95% less nicotine relative to "Big Tobacco" cigarette brands, including Marlboro(R), Camel(R), Newport(R), and American Spirit(R). The Company's MRTP application to the CTP/FDA will request that BRAND A packaging and marketing be allowed to disclose to consumers that the Company's proprietary Very Low Nicotine cigarettes reduce smokers' exposure to nicotine.
22nd Century is the only company in the world capable of growing virtually nicotine-free tobacco. Without any artificial extraction or chemical processes, 22nd Century's BRAND A cigarettes are made with the Company's proprietary VLN tobacco that is grown on independently-owned farms in the United States. 22nd Century's finished Very Low Nicotine cigarettes have the taste and sensory characteristics of conventional cigarettes, but contain only trace amounts of nicotine so smokers' exposure to nicotine is drastically reduced.
"We are extremely pleased with the frank and collaborative dialogue that occurred in yesterday's meeting," explained Gregg M. Gellman, 22nd Century's Director of Regulatory Affairs. "FDA's written and in-person feedback - combined with the ongoing discussions we plan to have with the FDA in the coming weeks and months - will help 22nd Century prepare and submit comprehensive and robust MRTP application for BRAND A Very Low Nicotine cigarettes."
"The World Health Organization has recommended 'mandated reductions in nicotine to minimally addictive levels.' Unfortunately, at present, smokers in the United States do not have a Very Low Nicotine cigarette option," explained Henry Sicignano, III, President and Chief Executive Officer of 22nd Century Group. "We believe BRAND A VLN cigarettes will prove invaluable in drastically reducing smokers' exposure to nicotine. To this end, 22nd Century looks forward to continuing to work closely with the FDA on this very important public health matter."

New International Survey Shows Overwhelming Support for Very Low Nicotine Cigarettes
Today 9:28 AM ET (Business Wire)Print
22nd Century Group, Inc. (NYSE MKT:XXII), a plant biotechnology company that is focused on tobacco harm reduction and cannabis research, announced today that the Company commissioned Harris Poll to conduct an international online survey from May 24-28, 2017 among over 6,000 adults ages 18+ in the United States, Japan, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Results of the multi-national consumer survey reflect overwhelming support for a reduction in nicotine content in cigarettes to non-addictive levels.
Survey respondents echoed the recommendation of former FDA Commissioner, Dr. David Kessler, who proposed in an interview with The Washington Post that the amount of nicotine in a cigarette should drop from about 10 milligrams to less than 1 milligram. "If you do this, you can save 200,000 to 300,000 lives a year," Kessler said. "Everything else pales in comparison."
The May 2017 survey asked how governments should introduce Very Low Nicotine cigarettes to smokers in each country. Representing an important cross-section of populations, more than half of international adults (59%) identified themselves as current or former smokers. Though slight differences appear from country-to-country, the survey results show remarkable consistency and compelling support for governments to implement nicotine reduction strategies.
-- 88% of international adults agree that cigarette companies should be required to print the nicotine content of their cigarettes on the pack. Japan is the only country of the five surveyed with cigarette packaging that contains information regarding nicotine content. At this time, cigarette packs in the United States, Canada, Australia, and the U.K. do not indicate the nicotine content of cigarettes.
-- A majority of international adults (54%) think that cigarettes with very low, non-addictive nicotine levels should be taxed at a lower rate than conventional cigarettes with addictive levels of nicotine. While governments can and do raise tobacco excise taxes, they compel smokers to choose between financial hardship and largely ineffective smoking cessation products. A lower tax rate for Very Low Nicotine cigarettes would provide smokers with motivation to opt for reduced nicotine products.
-- In the strongest of policy options, 74% of international adults agree that the government should mandate that all cigarettes have very low, non-addictive levels of nicotine. An additional 11% agree that, at the very least, cigarette companies should be required to offer one style of cigarettes with lower levels of nicotine.
While adults in these five opinion-leading countries (United States, Japan, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom) recently identified accurate package labeling and a government mandate requiring non-addictive levels of nicotine in cigarettes as appropriate, scientists studying the effects of Very Low Nicotine cigarettes have already called upon governments around the world to make these very same changes. The World Health Organization's Global Nicotine Reduction Strategy report called on WHO-member countries to "mandate reductions in nicotine to minimally addictive levels." Other scientists authored a special paper, published in Tobacco Control journal, which asserts that governments around the world should reduce the nicotine content of cigarettes to non-addictive levels... "less-than or equal to 0.4 mg per gram of tobacco, a 95-98% reduction in nicotine content relative to what is currently on the market."
22nd Century is the only company in the world capable of growing tobacco with nicotine levels of just 0.4mg per gram of tobacco. Leading scientists using 22nd Century's Very Low Nicotine SPECTRUM(R) research cigarettes have found that Very Low Nicotine SPECTRUM cigarettes are associated with reduced consumption and increased quit attempts (N Engl J Med 2015; 373:1340-1349).
What is intuitive to international adults is also well-studied in clinical trials. The Tobacco Control article summarized the highly attractive characteristics of Very Low Nicotine tobacco in this way: "...in current smokers, very low nicotine content (VLNC) cigarettes decrease nicotine exposure, decrease cigarette dependence, reduce the number of cigarettes smoked per day and increase the likelihood of contemplating, making and succeeding at a quit attempt."
"There is a compelling and urgent case for enacting a national nicotine policy in the United States and around the world," explained Henry Sicignano, III, President and Chief Executive Officer of 22nd Century Group. "Leading scientists and the public agree: governments should mandate the availability of Very Low Nicotine cigarettes."
Survey Methodology
This survey was conducted online by Harris Poll on behalf of 22nd Century Group from May 24-28, 2017 among 2,148 adults ages 18 and older in the United States, 1,014 adults ages 18 and older in the United Kingdom, 1,056 adults ages 18 and older in Japan, 1,050 adults ages 18 and older in Canada, and 1,033 adults ages 18 and older in Australia. This online survey is not based on a probability sample and therefore no estimate of theoretical sampling error can be calculated. For complete survey methodology, including weighting variables, please contact (716) 270-1523.

Sweden Figured Out How to Stop People From Smoking
The secret weapon: Snus, tobacco that doesn't kill people.
Well we don’t know really if it is the FDA or the Tabaco industry or neither who is requesting it.
If it is I think their intent to do so is they came to the conclusion that eventually XXII technology will win (either here in the US first if not in Japan China or Europe ) and they are just delaying the inevitable for whatever reason. This is maybe their last card to play But I think in doing so they are playing a dangerous game
I think you are right the FDA may have required for such study! and you are also right about questioning why it was not done before by XXII?.. it could have save us & the company so much time!
