Airlines queue up to buy bio-jetfuel

15 airlines have signed up with two US-based biofuel producers, Rentech and AltAir, for 1 billion litres per year in renewable jet biofuel, reports Biofuels Digest.

The Air Transport Association of America has announced that 15 airlines from the US, Canada, Germany and Mexico have signed MOUs with AltAir Fuels and Rentech – for the entire output of two new biofuel facilities that will be constructed in Mississippi and Washington state.

Twelve airlines from the United States, Canada, Germany and Mexico – Air Canada, American Airlines, Atlas Air, Delta Air Lines, FedEx Express, JetBlue Airways, Lufthansa German Airlines, Mexicana Airlines, Polar Air Cargo, United Airlines, UPS Airlines and US Airways – have signed MOUs with both producers. In addition, Seattle-based Alaska Airlines and Honolulu-based Hawaiian Airlines signed the MOU with AltAir Fuels, and Orlando-based AirTran Airways signed the MOU with Rentech.

Camelina oil will be converted into both renewable jet fuel and diesel at a new facility to be located at the existing Tesoro oil refinery in Anacortes, Wash. Based on analysis of U.S. Department of Agriculture data for comparable projects, AltAir estimates the project will create hundreds of jobs in a variety of industries, including farming and agricultural logistics, engineering and construction, and operations, maintenance and refining.

AltAir Fuels’ renewable jet fuel and green diesel are to be blended with petroleum-based jet fuel and diesel. The renewable jet fuel and diesel produced by AltAir Fuels will be fully compatible with the existing transportation fuel infrastructure, and will require no special handling. The fuel will be consumed by aircraft owned and operated by airlines who have signed the MOU, as well as heavy machinery operated at the Port of Seattle facilities.

Camelina is the most heavily tested and proven renewable fuel feedstock, having already powered two commercial aviation test flights – Japan Airlines and KLM – in 2009. In addition, the U.S. military has performed ground engine tests on camelina-based jet fuel in preparation for FA-18 Hornet fighter jet flights planned for spring 2010.

The non-binding MOU signed by Rentech and Air Canada, AirTran Airways, American Airlines, Atlas Air, Delta Air Lines, FedEx Express, JetBlue Airways, Lufthansa German Airlines, Mexicana Airlines, Polar Air Cargo, United Airlines, UPS Airlines and US Airways includes terms that are anticipated to serve as the basis of a possible definitive purchase agreement by these carriers for the Natchez Project’s entire synthetic jet fuel production of approximately 250 million gallons per year.

Fuel based on the Fischer-Tropsch process, including Rentech’s RenJet, is the only alternative jet fuel currently certified for use in commercial aviation at up to a 50/50 blend with traditional jet fuel. RenJet has a lower carbon footprint as well as lower regulated emissions compared to traditional jet fuel.

ZENG PPS has only one destiny: .10-.20 in the not so far future. All IMO, of course.
