MacNETv2 Travelstar Review
John Manzione of MacNETv2 recently reviewed the new IBM Travelstar 60GH, 60GB, 5400RPM drive. Here's what he had to say...
IBM’s new 60GB Travelstar is a 5400rpm ATA5 hard drive with a seek time of an astounding 12.ms (that’s milliseconds!) and it is a perfect fit for anyone looking to be the envy of all PowerBook G4 users.
IBM’s new Travelstar 60GH is an amazing hard drive. Easy to install and a snap to format, I’ve been running this drive in my PowerBook for 2 weeks without shutting down the machine and I have had no problems.
The 2.5inch drive does not heat up your PowerBook anymore than the drive that came with it. Because it’s running at 5400rpm you can feel the hard drive churn if your fingers are on the PowerBook and if you listen carefully you can hear the hard drive accessing data. Other than that the only other thing you notice is that your PowerBook is performing better and you seem to have all the room in the world.

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 27, 2002--Intel Corporation today highlighted innovative new technologies that will deliver better experiences for users of desktop computers, mobile PCs and wireless computing devices.
The technologies include Intel's next generation desktop processor and the forthcoming mobile Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 processor -- M, along with details of 2.5 and 3G communications processors for wireless devices.
Intel executives, in remarks at the Intel Developer Forum, Spring 2002, also outlined the progress of several industry initiatives such as 3GIO, a high speed interconnection technology between devices within the computer; the Intel(R) Personal Client Architecture (PCA) developer network, a support network for wireless developers; and a new Mobility Enabling Program, designed to enhance the future of mobile PCs.
Desktop PCs: the Digital Home
In remarks to the developer community, Louis Burns, vice president and co-general manager, Desktop Platforms Group disclosed plans for Intel's upcoming desktop processor, code-named Prescott. The processor, slated for 2003, is Intel's next generation processor based on the Intel(R) NetBurst(TM) microarchitecture. Prescott will, among other things, include Hyper-Threading technology, an Intel technology that allows operating systems to view a single physical processor as if it were two, significantly increasing platform performance. Additionally, Burns demonstrated a Pentium 4 processor running at clock rates up to 4 GHz.
"The Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 processor has become the desktop platform of choice for both consumers and business," said Burns. "Intel is driving a number of innovative technologies over the next year that will accelerate the digital convergence at home and continue to enhance our desktop platform capabilities, including higher performing processors and revolutionary new form factors."

IBM Travelstar GNX Release-2/13/02
IBM helps mobile workers lose weight, gain strength
IBM brings advanced notebook performance to entry-level and mainstream users; extends 18 consecutive quarters of mobile hard disk drive leadership
San Jose, Calif., Feb. 13, 2002 -- IBM today introduced the new hard disk drive 'X' factor for notebook users: the Travelstar GNX -- 'X' for extra-fast, extra-smart, extra-lean. IBM is now extending its industry-leading 5400 RPM performance to the broad market of notebook users for greater speed in a slimmer and lighter notebook.
The 5400 RPM performance will provide end-users with noticeable improvements in start-up and data access time and in running data-rich applications such as graphics, spreadsheets or audio and video files. With the GNX, IBM brings three generations of high-performance mobile hard drive expertise to a smaller footprint, increasing performance by more than 25-percent. The 'X-factor' performance comes from five primary sources: higher RPM, increased data rate, advanced cache management software, larger cache size, and a faster hard disk drive microprocessor unit.
Performance at 5400 RPM was an IBM-exclusive, top-of-the-line feature for mobile power users -- which also required a thicker (12.5 mm) hard drive and, thus, heavier notebook. But growing trends in storage-intensive applications and the "need for speed" are driving mainstream and even entry-level users to look for a performance boost without adding bulk. The new Travelstar GNX offers users accelerated performance in a thinner (9.5 mm) hard disk drive. Traditionally, 9.5 mm hard drives offer performance at 4200 RPM and are used in the vast majority of notebooks on the market.
"IBM's deep-seated experience in the high-performance mobile hard drive market will give GNX customers extra confidence in using proven technology," said Bill Healy, vice president, marketing, IBM Storage Technology Division. "The GNX line broadens IBM's 5400 RPM portfolio to reach the complete audience of notebook users -- from entry-level to power users."
The Travelstar GNX comes as IBM is again named the mobile hard disk drive market leader for the quarter ending December 2001,* making it the eighteenth consecutive quarter for IBM leadership in this product area.
IBM will offer the Travelstar GNX at 20 and 40 gigabyte (GB) capacities. The GNX performance will also be offered on a version of IBM's enhanced-availability mobile drives for non-traditional applications such as blade servers. IBM continues to implement antiferromagnetically-coupled media, otherwise known as 'Pixie Dust," across the new Travelstar GNX line. The GNX will begin shipping to customers in April.
IBM will continue to offer 5400 RPM performance in the thicker 12.5 mm drive to maximize capacity. At 60 GB and 5400 RPM, IBM's Travelstar 60GH currently holds the record for top capacity and performance in a mobile drive.

IBM Discontinues Palm OS handhelds-2.13.02
IBM puts WorkPad out of work
By Ian Fried
Staff Writer, CNET News.com
February 13, 2002, 10:15 AM PT
IBM plans to discontinue the WorkPad, its line of Palm OS handhelds, CNET News.com has learned.
Big Blue actually made the decision last year but has continued to sell its two WorkPad models because it has them in inventory, IBM spokesman Rick Bause said.
The products are essentially Palm handhelds with an IBM logo on them. The $399 WorkPad c505 is a re-badged m505, while the $329 c500 is an m500 emblazoned with Big Blue's logo.
Bause said the company is no longer actively developing WorkPad products and is focusing on other parts of its computing line as it tries to make its PC business more profitable.
"Each year we take a hard look at our product line to make sure we are investing in the right areas and the right products," Bause said. "These decisions allow us to focus on a streamlined set of product offerings and, more importantly, allow us to differentiate IBM PC products through investments in key technology areas, primarily wireless, security and manageability."
By all accounts, sales of the WorkPad were not huge, but the line served an important niche for IBM.
"Was it a significant business?" said Robin Marley, who works in market development for IBM's personal computing devices unit. "It was not a significant product business, but it was significant for our customers."
Marley said IBM will continue to offer Palm-branded handhelds to its larger customers through its Web site.
"We will offer Palms to our enterprises as part of complete solutions," Marley said.
Although IBM is focusing its product-development money elsewhere, the company continues to work on handhelds in its research labs. For example, Big Blue is demonstrating a tiny computer code-named Meta Pad that can serve as a laptop computer, desktop computer or handheld when it is snapped into different modules.
IBM launched its first WorkPad in 1997, based on an early PalmPilot. In 1999, IBM introduced WorkPads based on the Palm IIIx and Palm V handhelds.

Upon completion of the acquisition, scheduled for March 15, 2002, the parties intend that ASI will continue to conduct business from its existing 25,000 square foot facilities near Phoenix, Arizona and it's 8,000 square foot facility near Dallas Texas, as a wholly-owned subsidiary of PTSC. No changes in ASI management or employees are anticipated.
Commenting on the announcement, Donald Bernier, Chairman and CEO of PTSC, said, "The ASI customer base is spread throughout North America, Asia, and Europe. Their sales revenues exceeded $17 million in year 2000, declined with the rest of the industry to just over $8 million in 2001, and are expected to rebound as the industry recovers this year. The names on their customer list are companies known internationally as the world's leading chip makers, including AMD, ST Microelectronics, Texas Instruments, Motorola, and Philips Semiconductor, to name a few."
"What's more," Bernier continued, "they are about to beta test a proprietary ultra-deep-etch product line that has characteristics we believe will be well suited to meet the needs of companies making chips for the fast developing Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) market, which PTSC is positioning itself to address. This blend of customer companies, sales revenue and suitability to the emerging MEMS market will fit very well with PTSC's business model as we proceed with licensing our patented technologies."
Douglas N. Dixon, founder and CEO of ASI, stated: "We are excited about the prospects of teaming up with PTSC in what we feel will be a win/win relationship for the benefit of both companies. Many of our customers are or likely will be producing chips being used in products and markets addressed by PTSC's intellectual property, to which an industry expert has assigned a fair market value of $187 million. The combination of our assets and resources with those of a publicly held company like PTSC should be quite synergistic. We intend to maintain the high standards of quality and service on which our reputation is based as we continue to work toward our goal of increased sales and market share, all of which we expect will be a significant contribution toward creating added value for the shareholders of PTSC."

( BW)(CA-E.DIGITAL)(EDIG) Letter to Shareholders
Business Editors & High-Tech Writers
SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 11, 2002--This letter is a direct communication from the CEO and the President of e.Digital Corp. (OTCBB:EDIG).
Feb. 11, 2002
Dear Shareholder:
This week we will file our Form 10-Q with the Securities and Exchange Commission, summarizing the quarter ended Dec. 31, 2001. Per our Shareholder Communications policy, we would like to provide you with a brief overview of the financial results and an update about our plans and expectations for your company.
Quarterly Financial Report
Our Form 10-Q for the quarter ended Dec. 31, 2001, is scheduled to be filed before Feb. 15 with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Unaudited results for the quarter include total revenues of nearly $600,000, plus deferred revenues of approximately $180,000 with a loss of approximately $1.86 million or $0.01 per share. Product revenues will reflect sales of consumer products through our online store, which opened approximately six weeks before Christmas.
Our business is growing and we are at an important crossroads in our development as a company. With the recent additions of Jim Collier and Ran Furman to senior management, we are focused on the execution of our business plan that, if successful, is expected to establish our technology as an industry standard, expand distribution of our branded consumer products, reach and maintain profitability, and obtain a NASDAQ listing. This letter outlines our plans for going forward.
Automotive Business
The burgeoning automotive telematics market is a strategic target for our immediate and long-term business expansion. e.Digital technology, including our MicroOS(TM) file management system and our VoiceNav(TM) user-independent speech recognition interface, enables automotive OEMs and ODMs to incorporate additional features and successfully meet safety objectives in automotive telematics and infotainment solutions.
Automotive telematics is the wireless exchange or delivery of communication, information, and other content between the auto and/or occupants and external sources. Telematics is an emerging industry expected to be worth over $1.1 billion in 2002. The telematics industry is in its infancy, much like the PC industry was in 1980, and is poised for tremendous growth. (Summarized from "Telematics: Technologies, Trends, and Markets, September, 2001" by the Telematics Research Group). The Strategis Group, a research firm, predicts that 84 percent of new cars sold in 2004 will feature some form of telematics equipment, and Forrester Research estimates that telematics will become a $20 billion industry worldwide by 2006.
Based on over two years of internal development, and growing interest in our VoiceNav and MicroOS technologies, we are making automotive telematics solutions a primary focus of our OEM and ODM technology development and marketing efforts. VoiceNav, first incorporated into our MXP-100 portable digital music and voice player/recorder, was shown in an automotive telematics application with Eclipse by Fujitsu Ten at the 2002 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES). We also demonstrated 802.11 wireless communication capability in the system, which incorporates a beta version of MicroOS 3.0.
Based on the work we have done and continue to do, we are expanding our business in this area and taking advantage of significant near-term and long-term revenue opportunities available to us. The revenue opportunities from the automotive telematics applications of our products and technologies is potentially far greater than even those from portable consumer devices, both in royalties and margins.
E-Tail and Retail Sales
Our online store (www.edigital-store.com) has done well, averaging more than $1 in revenue generated per impression, greatly exceeding industry averages. (The e-tail industry typically measures results in pennies or fractions of a penny of revenue generated per impression.) The online store and our PR program achieved our strategic business objectives -- name recognition, critical acclaim, international exposure through a variety of media reviews, and most important, created an avenue into the retail market.
As a result of our successful initial rollout of e.Digital branded products through our online store, we are now well-positioned to move into a broad range of consumer electronics retail opportunities. Retail sales of MP3 players exceeded expectations over the holidays, and consumer electronics retailers are targeting this product category for continued growth, seeking new products and new features. With the formation of our Consumer Electronics Business Unit, headed by Tom Boksa, we are working with high-profile retailers to finalize terms of distribution of e.Digital-branded and OEM branded products into their retail stores. Our online store is dwarfed by the conventional "brick and mortar" retail opportunities that it has opened for us.
Through our new Consumer Electronics Business Unit, we plan to achieve significantly greater sales volumes and greater revenues for our consumer products. A growing mix of e.Digital-branded and OEM-branded products in the consumer electronics channels is expected to maximize market penetration of e.Digital technology, generate revenue, including royalties and margins, and increase exposure for our products and company name.
Summary
Branding and launching consumer products, building brand recognition, launching into e-tail and soon, retail channels, move us forward in achieving our stated business objectives. We are working aggressively with OEMs, partners, allies and licensees including DataPlay, Musical Electronics, Bang and Olufsen, QDesign, SanDisk, Maycom, Actel, Eclipse by Fujitsu Ten, EASTECH, Evolution, Lucent, Samsung, Texas Instruments, Toshiba, IBM and others to develop and complete new products and applications for our technology. We are positioned to take advantage of the explosive worldwide growth expected to take place in the automotive telematics industry. Our portable music player designs are ready to benefit from coming subscription services from the major record labels. We now offer and provide manufacturing services to licensees, OEMs, ODMs and partners. These multiple revenue channels, and a veteran management team, define an aggressive business plan that we are executing. We believe it is very important to act quickly and capitalize on the multiple opportunities we have cultivated and it is essential in strategically positioning e.Digital to become an industry leader.
Effective this month, we will begin holding regularly-scheduled quarterly conference calls with interested analysts and the press, and simultaneous webcasts for shareholders. During these calls executives from your company will take questions, discuss future business plans, and provide revenue guidance. Calls will be scheduled around the filing of our annual and quarterly financial statements. The first of these calls is being scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 19; specific details will be announced separately.
Sincerely yours,
Alfred H. Falk

From Philips-1st Telematics Processor
( BW)(CA-PHILIPS-SEMI-2)(PHG)(PHI.AS) Philips Semiconductors First to Market With Fully-Integrated Telematics Processor
Business Editors/High-Tech Writers
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 8, 2002--Philips Semiconductors, a division of Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE:PHG) (AEX:PHI), today becomes the first company to bring-to-market a fully-integrated telematics processor combining all key hardware blocks onto one chip. The SAF3100 telematics processor enables extremely cost-effective telematics solutions with easier integration and a small footprint and is suitable for all areas of telematics applications, such as GPS positioning and tracking, off-board navigation, automatic emergency call systems or remote controlled vehicle functions and diagnostics.
Key to the telematics industry is the need to reduce the number and sizes of the required chips in order to integrate telematics functionality into other devices, such as car radios. The SAF3100 enables easy integration into the car radio by combining all the key hardware onto a single chip, which can be used as the main radio micro-controller. Besides the main micro-controller, the SAF3100 telematics processor integrates a 12-Channel GPS baseband, a dual 14bit Analog to Digital (AD) Converter -- enabling connection to a Gyroscope for dead-reckoning -- embedded RAM, a CAN bus controller and easy interfacing to a cellular phone module via high speed UARTs.
"Ease of integration and cost will dramatically affect how quickly telematics solutions are brought to the mass market," said Niko Veenstra, senior marketing manager for Car Infotainment Systems at Philips Semiconductors. "We are the first company to offer a cost-effective, fully integrated telematics processor, already compatible with a corresponding front-end device. The SAF3100 enables the integration of innovative technology and services and underlines our continuous market and technology leadership in car radio chipsets."
Telematics enables transfer of vehicle data, status and position to a service provider, bringing a wealth of extra functionality to the car for improved safety, security and convenience. Features include automatic emergency call and remote diagnostics; transfer of location based services (LBS) -- including traffic data and points of interest close-by; off-board navigation; remote control of vehicle functions -- such as remote door unlock (should keys be locked in the car) -- and vehicle tracking, which can be used for fleet management, road tolling and locating stolen vehicles. The integrated dead-reckoning of the SAF3100 enables continuous tracking of the vehicle even if the satellite link is momentarily interrupted.
Equipped with extensive interfacing capabilities, the SAF3100 is designed to integrate fully with existing vehicle electronics, including Philips' own industry-leading CAN bus devices, while an ETSI compatible cellular phone modem interface enables communications via GSM and CDMA standards. Future software upgrades will also include Bluetooth libraries.
The SAF3100 is compatible with Philips Semiconductors' own UAA1570 GPS front-end device for first generation products. The telematics processor will also be compatible with the UAF1572 GPS front-end, which dramatically reduces the external component count and overall cost of materials as well as the power consumption while increasing the performance (available from Q3 2002). Samples of the SAF3100 are available now. Mass production will be ramped up in February 2002.

Form of 5% Secured Promissory Note due April 18, 2002 in the amount of
$1,200,000 entered into with Immanuel Kant International Limited.*
The (*) indicates the form is included with the Prospectus.
Some of the significant terms:
Prepayment penalty is $120K (10%) Plus Accrued Interest. Any prepayment
must be in full.
Default occurs if trading on Edig is suspended for more than 1 trading
day.
But here's the real kicker in the terms of the note... a beaut of a
term:
4. Financings. Through and including the 360(th) day following the date
of this Note, Maker may not directly or indirectly, offer, sell or grant
any option to purchase (or announce any offer, sale, grant or any option
to purchase) any of its Common Stock or other securities which entitle
the holder thereof to receive
Common Stock, including without limitation any debt, preferred stock or
other instrument or security that is, at any time during its life and
under any circumstances, convertible into or exchangeable for Common
Stock.
[So it would appear that Edig isn't allowed to sell any common stock or
anything convertable to common for 360 days ..i.e. until Jan 13, 2003.
BUT... read on... there are some very tightly bound exceptions
provided:]
The restrictions specified in this Section 4 shall not apply to [i.e.
exceptions are:]
[1st Exception:] (i) securities issued as compensation or pursuant to
stock options granted to employees, officers and directors of the Maker
pursuant to any stock option or other similar plan duly adopted by the
Maker, or
[But then comes the 1st interesting & perhaps enlightening exception:]
[2nd Exception:] (ii) securities issued pursuant to or in a connection
with a merger, acquisition or business combination by or with the Maker
or
[AND if exception (ii) didn't raise your eyebrows, then here's the
sweetener... this has got to get you going... not to mention
concerned...]
[3rd Exception:] (iii) securities offered or sold in a single
transaction [which meet the following 3 conditions (x, y, & z):]
(x)exempt from the registration requirements of the Securities Act of
1933, as amended, and
(y) resulting in net proceeds to Maker of not less than $10,000,000 and
at a price that is not directly or indirectly, presently or at any later
time,
discounted to the market price of the Common Stock at the time of such
offering [i.e. result in at least $10M net proceeds and sold at no less
than Market Price], and
(z) not issued in tandem with any options, warrants or other rights to
acquire additional securities of Maker or securities convertible into or
exchangeable for securities of Maker.
[What exception (iii) says is that Edig is allowed to sell common stock
ONLY in a SINGLE TRANSACTION for AT LEAST $10M at Market
Price, but which must be EXEMPT from Registration Requirements and which
can't be sold or offered with any other options or warrants.
Strange condition in as much as Edig then immediately proceeds to
register 20M shares in a Shelf registration (so does this meet or not
meet
the exception (iii) condition (x) which requires that the shares be
exempt from registration??? If it meets that condition, then it's o.k...
but if this
is specifically designed to not meet the requirement, then Edig has
purposefully defaulted and the Co. belongs to the Note holder! I assume
therefore that the registration requirement refers to that which relates
to having the newly sold shares registered for resale... in other words,
the
exception to the offering of common stock is that it must be sold in ONE
TRANSACTION worth at least $10M, at market price, and so that it
doesn't have to be registered for resale. This is exactly what the Shelf
registration does.
Therefore, this Note's condition is that Edig cannot sell shares for a
360 day period (Until on or about Jan 13, 2003) except in ONE
TRANSACTION, for at LEAST $10M, at MARKET PRICEs! So Guess WHAT!!!???
EDIG IS FORCED TO SELL AT MARKET PRICE ALL
AT ONCE!!!! WHICH will FORCE THE PRICE to SMITHERENES if thru a
Broker/Dealer... or force somebody to buy $10M worth of Edig
stock at the then prevailing market price... and they get ONE SHOT at
it... "single transaction".
Looks like the Note holder has Edig between a rock and hard-place for a
year! To raise the money to pay back the loan by due date (Apr 18),
Edig has to sell stock. BUT, they have to do it all at once for at least
$10M at market price... which imo will drop the market price to about
$0.50
(which is why Edig got 20M shares in the shelf offering... to raise $10M
in the event that they have to sell all 20M shares to raise the $10M...
&
will also be used for repayment of the $1.32M needed to repay the
loan).]
In addition to being entitled to exercise all rights provided herein or
granted by law, including recovery of damages, Payee will be entitled to
specific performance of Maker's obligations under this Section 4.
Maker agrees that monetary damages may not be adequate compensation for
any loss incurred by reason of any breach of obligations
described in this Section 4 and hereby agrees to waive in any action for
specific performance of any such obligation the defense that a remedy
at law would be adequate. The obligations and agreements contained in
this Section 4 shall survive through the period expressed in this
Section 4 [i.e. 360 days], regardless of any payment, prepayment or
Event of Default under this Note.
8. Use of Proceeds [of the Loan] Note Maker shall use the proceeds from
this Note hereunder for working capital purposes and not for the
satisfaction of any portion of Maker's or Subsidiary's debt (other than
payment of trade payables in the ordinary course of Maker's business
and prior practices), [& not] to redeem any of Maker's equity or
equity-equivalent securities or to settle any outstanding litigation.
Watch OUT FOLKS... this is the "small print"... it'll kill you every
time.
Thanks a lot Matt.(eom)

IBM News-Interesting.
News from IBM Storage Technology
Desktop Drives
Hard Drives Reach the Next Plateau (PC Magazine, February 12, 2002 )
The IBM Deskstar 120GXP may not have been the first 120GB 7,200-rpm drive available, but our benchmark test results show it to be the best performer we've seen so far, if only by a small margin. For now, IBM is sticking with the ATA/100 interface while waiting for SATA to make its presence known. The Deskstar 120GXP, which uses three 40GB platters and includes a 2MB buffer, is IBM's highest-capacity IDE drive. It is well suited to desktop systems that require the speed and capacity needed for digital content creation and storage, as well as for storing large video and audio files.
The drive also implements IBM's AFC (antiferromagnetically coupled) media coating, better known as pixie dust, which the company claims improves data stability and increases areal density (the amount of data, in bits, that can fit onto a platter). Greater areal density enables higher-capacity drives. To put it in perspective, the areal density of the Deskstar 120GXP is just under 30 gigabits per square inch. But IBM hopes to hit 100 gigabits per square inch by 2003, which means that megacapacity drives of 400GB or more are a real possibility.

Lifeonthefarm-Also read all of Cksla & Murgirl's posts here. A lot of great stuff here. These two are DD machines. The best. Good Luck.
Lifeonthefarm-Start with Tinroad's Post #8765 here.
Good luck to you.
Dataplay-I count 53 partners. The time approaches.
Not all music devises, but wonder how many are, and
wonder what e.Digital is involved in, aside from music.
Some we know, some we don't yet. Everybody, just hang tight.
Strangely quiet, isn't it?

CES Report by DABOSS
TAKEN FROM: e.Digital (EDIG)
BY: DABOSS POST NUMBER: 880906
REPLY TO: 880133 BY: wm_wallace2000
My CES highlights:
The EDIG booth was of course, nice, visible, and positioned in the thick of things...MP3 wise. (sidenote: the RIOriot and sblu booth were not even in this hall but in an entirely different hall, away from the MP3 player section, as sblu is clearly focused on their television opportunity by having their booth in the television section)
I met Sean, I believe, who was manning the booth with Wendy when I was there, who is the new, full time, website designer. He also demoed the Fujitsu Eclipse MP3 changer with VoiceNAV for us.
This Fujitsu opportunity is an incredible space to occupy for EDIG, one which has the potential to yield a growing revenue stream well into the future.
I randomly met a guy on the floor who was wearing a Fujitsu Ten jacket and opened up a conversation. He was an actual installer of the already existing Fujitsu Ten product line and stated that he has been installing the Eclipse brand for some time. He said the new product is likely a module addition that can be added to the already existing cars lines as an upgrade.
This is consistent with the recent PR which states:
"This collaboration provides an immediate opportunity to deliver fully integrated digital data management solutions, as an option or upgrade to our already substantial installed customer base."
As already reported, the B & O catalog was available and opened for viewing in the EDIG booth. The catalog is $50, according to Wendy. B & O live in their own space...and like it that way. B & O didn't have a presence at CES because they don't have to, as they are their own retail outlet with an existing customer base.
DATAPLAY was represented in the Imation booth and had a great demonstration of their products...and the trademark is "Imation DataPlay". The MTV player is very cool and fits comfortably into the hand...about as nice as the MXP100, although it is shorter in stature. The ergonomics are tremendous. The design is a win.
The bottom line from my time spent at Imation and Dataplay, with two different reps at two different times, is that this will be marketed hard. The Dataplay disks come in casing identical to CDs, so retailers do not have to make any special arrangements to stock this new technology and a casing with which the consumer is already familiar and comfortable.
And even more importantly is the versatility of the Dataplay disks to carry audio and video as an inexpensive storage device. Seeing video clips adds an entirely new dimension to listening to portable music...something which will come in time with DATAPLAY's technology, and another reason why, IMO, the CD will start to fade as the medium of choice.
Not to mention that additional content is always at your fingertips, as you can unlock additional content in a few seconds. I witnessed the "unlocking" process and if you blinked, you missed it. This is a huge marketing tool and a dimension lacking in CDs.
This is a marketer's dream. Instant gratification for the consumer when they pop the Dataplay disk into their EDIG player and the ability to unlock more content later, all, some or none of which, they choose. How cool is that ? Seeing it live captures the imagination.
With 3 of the MAJOR music labels backing this format, and another to likely step up to the plate, it is not a stretch to see this market opportunity as a big win for EDIG. This is a very professional collaboration that will likely supplant the CD market as we know it.
The jewel to my visit, however, was my conversation with, (not to be too specific) the marketing department at Evolution. Keep in mind these are my interpretations of somewhat casual conversations and my understanding of what was said may not be entirely accurate, as it all happened rather fast with lots of background noise. But I was not alone in these discussions and my interpretations were confirmed by another...at least we think we heard what we thought we heard...lol
They, Evolution, has the rights for licensing MTV audio AND video content to portable devices, as I understood it...a HUGE opportunity.
No opportunity is without risk, but the people at Evolution are extremely excited to be positioned with MTV, Dataplay and EDIG and are banking on a huge opportunity this year.
He stated that typically on an "initial" rollout that 6 pieces were the norm, with exceptions. But what was the most amazing comment of the day was that there are approximately 10,000 distribution points initially...which means MTV and Dataplay have opened some doors.
Do the math. 60 K on rollout @ $300+/unit and you are looking at an $18+ mil initial gross rollout...not unlike the numbers we saw reported on the nomad in late 2000. ($19 mil in 45 days) No specifics were given as to who the end distribution points were...but one only need go to the MTV website to understand the mass GLOBAL appeal and distribution network for MTV.
EDIG is positioned in some rather INCREDIBLE markets with some UNIQUE and SUBSTANTIAL PARTNERS, all confirmed and all of which are coming into their own in calendar 2002. This has been verified, I don't know how many times by how many different sources...
And, CES 2002 just put an exclamation point behind this fact, as all these PARTNERS are stepping forward with products, commitments and time frames for launch with "EDIG inside".
Glad I was there !
AND YOU ARE HERE !!!

A EDIG REPORT FROM CES!
Not having a lot of time at this CES, In between my Account Meetings and job
related Info gathering I made some stops that were EDIG related:
1st Stop: EDIG Booth
I went Thursday morning 10AM; very few people around. They were in the new
South Hall with all the MP3 companies, TI, Imation, etc... so it took the
masses a while to get there from starting off in the North Hall. On a
positive note, as mentioned in EDIG’s PR. EDIG’s logo was listed on a fold
out first page on one of the show programs as a partner w/ Microsoft.
I talked to a young guy, EDIG employee, can’t remember his name...about the
ECLIPSE unit. BTW, Eclipse had an extremely impressive booth, that was
always busy every time I passed it. Overall, The automobile entertainment
technology section was huge!!! Definitely a key exhibit at CES. He showed me
Eclipse’s 5441 Unit w/ EDIG technology inside. I asked him if this was the
only unit that EDIG would be in, and he said he thought they would be in the
whole “E-com” line. He predicted a 2nd QTR launch on the unit.
Spoke to Wendy Ravenel, she is very sweet and gracious. She showed me EDIG’s
B&O unit in the B&O catalogue- meaning that it was shipping. It was a small
round player with sterling silver headphones- very upscale.
The unit was the “B-O Sound 2”. Its retail she said was between
$700-$1,000. We joked that the B&O catalogue was so upscale that it didn’t
list any prices on any product.
2nd Stop: MTV Evolution Booth.
This booth was buzzin’..... I spoke to a lady behind the counter that told me
that MTV will do the marketing/advertising on this unit. She also told me
the official launch date will be March 15th, and MTV has an agreement w/
Dataplay that their unit will be the first Dataplay unit launched, so the
official launch date on Dataplay is March 15th,. She told me it will be sold
in CompUSA and “Other first and second tier retailers” that she couldn’t
comment on. Retail $369.00. The small press booklet that they gave out had
Edigital listed as a partner, one of about 4 or 5.
3rd Stop: Imation Booth
Fairly active booth. Had a display of 4 Dataplay units there in a clear
bubble, with the listing below...”powered by Edigital” The representative I
spoke to said he predicted a May launch (in stores), and the Models with
Edigital in it belonged to I-River and Digiset. Also Imation’s Player named
the Disco. Thought stores like “Best Buy, electronic stores, ....” would
carry them
4th Stop Microsoft Booth.
Had the MXP 100 and Treo Displayed with about 50 other players.
Be Huge!

Sirius Says DaimlerChrysler and Ford Delay Orders (Update2)
By David Evans
Las Vegas, Jan. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Sirius Satellite Radio Inc.'s partners DaimlerChrysler AG and Ford Motor Co. won't install many of the radios needed to receive its programming until the 2004 model year, said Chief Executive Joseph Clayton.
Sirius will begin selling its satellite program service on Feb. 14 at more than 150 retailers in four cities for $12.95 a month. That's five months behind rival XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc., which has signed up more than 30,000 subscribers for $9.99 a month.
Shares of Sirius fell 84 cents to $7.95 on trading of 8.2 million, almost triple the three-month daily average.
By Aug. 1, Sirius expects to begin selling its service nationally, said Clayton, who was hired as CEO on Nov. 27. Problems with the integrated circuit chips used in its receivers delayed the launch for more than a year. He said he's confident the bugs have been fixed.
The delays allowed XM to become the first satellite radio company to have its receivers installed as factory equipment by an automaker. Clayton said Sirius doesn't expect many sales to automakers until the 2004 model year.
``In terms of mass volumes, that will be with the next generation of our product, where the costs will come down almost 50 percent,'' said Clayton in an interview at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. ``That will be next year -- in the second half.''
Cadillac Receivers
Sirius plans to sell motorists 100 channels of digital programming, including about 60 commercial-free music stations. The service, which will initially be available in Denver, Phoenix, Houston and Jackson, Mississippi, costs $400 or more for a special radio receiver, antenna and installation.
In November, General Motors began offering XM receivers as a factory option on Cadillac DeVilles and Sevilles. On Monday, GM will announce plans to install XM devices in more than 20 models by the end of 2002, said XM CEO Hugh Panero.
Sirius is ``comfortable'' that the first factory installations of its radios will be made by Bayerische Motoren Werke AG during the fourth quarter of 2002, said Clayton, in certain high-end BMW vehicles. He said DaimlerChrysler will follow in the last half of 2003, with Ford some time after that.
A spokeswoman for DaimlerChrysler said no decision has been made yet on when her company's divisions will begin installing Sirius radios.
``Those times are not set in stone,'' said DaimlerChrysler spokeswoman Mary Beth Halprin. ``The quality has to be there.''
On Tuesday, Delphi Automotive Systems Corp., the largest auto- parts maker, won a contract from DaimlerChrysler to supply Sirius radios for Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Mercedes-Benz cars and light trucks and Freightliner LLC medium and heavy-duty trucks.
Delphi already makes XM receivers for General Motors.
Jeffrey Owens, president of the company's Delphi Delco Electronics unit, said Delphi is still waiting for the final chipset needed for testing and certification of the Sirius radios it will build for DaimlerChrysler.
``We should have had it a long time ago,'' said Owens.
Bloomberg LLP, the parent of Bloomberg News, has agreements to distribute radio programming to Sirius and XM.
Gern-It happens to the best of us, and you are
one of the best. Thanks for your efforts. Good Luck.
Good Work Cksla (eom)
Bob-Good luck to you and Matt. This forum has been
a Godsend to a lot of folks who want to discuss investments without all of the undesireables in the way. Hope all goes well for you.
Just a note to wish all of you a happy holiday and
a new year filled with many good fortunes. Thanks for all of the important input that all of you provide. It is appreciated by many. Enjoy your families and Good Luck.
Danl-Yes, I would say this connection could make e.Digital
a company will make shareholders forget 2001 and prior, if they are smart about it. Good post.
Jack-Can't get to it. Can we cut & paste it? Thanks.(eom)
Emit-We will see. (eom)
IBM & Treo 10-This sure is impressive to me.

Keep on the lookout for the word Infotainment.
e.Digital is set up to enter a whole new world of technology in the coming days, weeks, and months.
The new automobile entertainment systems will arrive next year, and e.Digital is right in the middle of it.
The music players will become more and more sophisticated, and e.Digital is already advancing their own technology.
DataPlay will be a huge thing in the 1st and 2nd Qtr's, and e.Digital is the primary integrator in these devises, and possibly the only integrator in the music related devises. I would not be surprised at all if e.Digital was involved with 20 OEM's related to DP enabled music devises. It is obviously unknown if the DataPlay disk will take over the CD, but if you look at their investors and partners (I counted 53 partners this week), there will be a very credible shot to do so. e.Digital is right in the middle of this new DP medium, and it will be extremely exciting to watch.
The new satelite radio will be something to watch along with the set-top boxes revolution coming to fruition in mass.
Keep a very close eye and ear out for the new happenings with IBM and Texas Instruments. These are two of e.Digital's beat friends, and the involvement with these two just might surprise everyone here.
These are just a few of my thoughts on a Saturday morning, and imo, we are on the edge of very big new fronts about to be made public. These thoughts are all my opinion, based on my own DD.
It appears that the world of technological change in consumer products, is finally ready for e.Digital technology. Make sure you are positioned to make this ride create a difference in your life.
Good Luck to everyone who has hung in there for many months and years. It's about to happen.
