Canada's uranium boom
Last Updated Jan. 22, 2007
CBC News
There's no commodity quite like uranium. After processing, it's used primarily as fuel in nuclear power reactors to generate electricity. But unlike other fuels, such as oil, coal, or natural gas, the cost of uranium doesn't really seem to affect the demand. That's because the price of uranium is just a small fraction of the cost of a multi-billion-dollar reactor. And lately, that price has been charging higher at a frantic rate.
It's no wonder, then, that Canada is in the midst of a surge of uranium exploration and mining. In this country, the industry is shifting from low-grade underground mines to spectacularly high-grade projects, where the raw ore is up to 24 per cent uranium oxide concentrate (known as U3O8). For Canada's uranium mining industry, the fundamentals have never been brighter.
Uranium prices soar
Uranium prices in the last six years have gone only one way — straight up. In January 2007, the spot price of U3O8 (milled uranium oxide) was $72 US a pound. That's almost double where it started in 2006, and is a ten-fold increase since 2001. Forecasts of $85 US, $100 US, even $200 US a pound aren't too difficult to find. Prices of many Canadian-listed uranium miners have taken off.
Why the price jumps? Several reasons. And all of them affect the mineral's supply and demand fundamentals.
1.The resurgence of nuclear power. After years when nuclear reactor orders could best be described as anything but electric, the world has rediscovered nuclear power. Whether it's the perceived high cost of conventional energy sources or worries about greenhouse gas emissions (nuclear power doesn't produce any), many countries — Canada included — are opting for the nuclear option for a significant part of their future energy needs. Nuclear energy already provides 15 per cent of Canada's electricity (51 per cent of Ontario's). Globally, the World Nuclear Association says 30 reactors are now under construction, 64 more are planned, and another 158 are being proposed. China wants to quadruple its nuclear capacity by 2020.
2.Consumption outweighs production. The world currently produces barely half of the uranium it consumes. With the increasing demand for fuel for nuclear reactors, and the difficult and time-consuming process of finding and developing new mines, that shortfall is likely to linger for years to come.
3.The Cigar Lake flood. Cameco Corp. is the world's biggest uranium producer. Its mine at Cigar Lake, in northern Saskatchewan, is the biggest undeveloped high-grade uranium deposit in the world. It was to start producing in 2008. The market was counting on that one mine to supply as much as a sixth of the world's uranium. But in October 2006, a major flood hit the mine while it was being developed, delaying production by at least a year and sending spot uranium prices further into the stratosphere.
Canada is the biggest producer of uranium in the world, responsible for almost 28 per cent of the globe's production in 2005, followed by Australia, Kazakhstan, and Russia.
.Different kind of fever sweeps Yukon — for uranium.
Last Updated: Thursday, March 8, 2007 |

CBC News
The Yukon, long known as a source of gold, is now luring prospectors in search of a different kind of motherlode: uranium.
Mining industry watchers say there's a surge of companies exploring uranium in the territory, producing some big-dollar deals. On Monday, Vancouver-based Cash Minerals announced it will spend $15 million looking for uranium in the Yukon starting in April.
And on Wednesday, Logan Resources and International KRL Resources Corp. announced they have staked a land package with 2,245 uranium mining claims in the Yukon's Cassiar Plateau, 95 kilometres northeast of Whitehorse. The two companies also said they are planning multi-million dollar exploration programs for the summer.
"I am seeing just a huge number of new companies getting active in the Yukon," Steve Stakiw, the Western Canada editor of The Northern Miner industry newspaper, said Wednesday.
Yukon has about six known uranium deposits and other areas yet to be explored, Stakiw said.
He added that the price of uranium — which has risen nearly tenfold in the past few years — will keep rising as demand for it grows, especially in future energy markets.
After processing, uranium is used primarily as fuel in nuclear power reactors to generate electricity.
"There's shortfalls in terms of the supply stream. So if anything, I think the uranium market is going to maintain its strength if not get even stronger. The uranium price has gone astronomic," he said.
"In terms of primary energy generation around the world, I would say there's coal and there is nuclear. And basically between the two of those, nuclear is being viewed as being one of the cleaner alternatives out there."
Howard,
You should be fine... spoke with GLXI yesterday for an hour a lot of big things are going to start to happen and it will happen very, very fast.. we will dangle here in the .20's for a few days and then to much higher grounds... The volume that we are waiting for should come onto the field next week.. Big players have taken notice of GLXI and like what they see.
GLXI is gonna start a big move next week.... I feel it in my bones
The only thing hurting GLXI right now is volume...
That will not continue to occur when they make announcements about uranium contracts....
That info will be posted on all of the uranium sites and things will start to happen.. In a REAL GOOD WAY!
Revenue streams are starting the minute they start the front-end loaders. BIG revenues start and stocks soar!! fact!!!
Things at FCCN are gonna get a lot better really soon...
I feel better about being a locust everyday... We never would have even considered any of the crap plays listed below.. I feel sorry for thw IHUB guys who are in them though..

mm's don't want to get left holding the bag.. and it could be a big one.. they know this is a ticking time bomb.. with all the good news it's only a question of time, the right PR, cusip change or big investor to set the candle off in the sky... any one of these conditions at the right time will sent GLXI off to it's destiny... With mining production getting underway and that guaranteed cash infusion from trimax I don't think the clock needs to be wound any tighter.....
I'm here, I got up late , then looked around for any new news on GLXI and Uranium ... slow day... GLXI is low volume day but looking good to me..
GLXI reminds me of the TV show on Animal Planet about the Alabama Gulf Zoo you know the zoo (stock) that said I could..
All news has been great news .... The word will get out... Mining production starts this month... Once the revenue stream starts to kick in we will get PR's on mining contracts and the such.. There really only one direction to go and the mm's know that..

Have you ever seen a financial statement of glxi?? Where i can find that information??
Miners still sitting pretty
Don't cry for the miners, they are still raking it in.
While commodity prices shown weakness for months, they are still high enough
to give the big players healthy profits.
Xstrata for example, built of roughly half of its US$43-billion market capitalization through acquistions in 2006, most notably, Canada's own Falconbridge.

Besides that I like to eat corn... I can't say the same about rice... maybe they can make ethanol out of zuccini or squash don't like the either... Far and away wood chips should be an extremely abundant and cheap source..
I'm eagerly awaiting the "inside scoop" from these guys about GLXI and the show.. I bet we will learn some more of the "good stuff"... One thing for sure this is no Pump and dump that designation goes to Cigar Lake till they get the water out!!!
LOL!
Apparently $70 - 80 is considered cheap... The consensus at the show is that it's going up to $100 as the already mined surface reserve of Cameco dwindles away...
I heard that Crazy Jim had actually met the GLXI Guys!! It only confirms to me that GLXI's presence was certainly known!!
He could only talk to them for a short while apparently they had some closed door scheduled meetings..
Could mean good news to all of us... Wish we knew more...
Waist Deep Uranium = BIG $
If GLXI does find a big hookup to superpower instant mining production there will be more to meet the eye than just $2.25 a share... We know they are going through a name change and a cusip change... The cusip change should cause a real nice run in the price but I bet they have bigger plans... There's millions of dollars in those waist deep uranium claims and it would certainly push the share price in the dollars per share range and it will stay there.. I bet they have plans on moving from Pink Town to a bigger exchange such as AMEX or NASDAQ then they could get some of the big institutional money coming in....
Talk Of the Show
It sounds like it is the Talk of the show.... With Cigar Lake out of production for at least a year and Cameco's production grinding to a standstill halt the opportunity for the small guys to get in the market and get penetration is greater than ever..
And the profits look so rich to the investment bankers especially on companies that have claims that are EASILY RETRIEVABLE!! Hopefully GLXI has made some hookups to superpower mining production...
I bet if that happens this stock will go Bezerk!!
Uranium galore
There is an abundance of uranium at PDAC. Check that, there is an abundance of companies involved in the exploration or development of uranium.
With just a few steps through one of the downstairs ballrooms of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, you'll find a whole whack of companies boasting about their promising uranium projects.
Virtually next door to one another are names like Titan Uranium, Western Prospector Group, Universal Uranium, ESO Uranium, RPT Uranium, Crosshair Exploration and Mining, Kahn Resources and Energy Metals.
And that is just in one strip of booths. Many more uranium can be found virtually everywhere else too.
One interesting story comes from Consolidated Pacific Bay Minerals (CBP/TSX-V), which has seen its stock climb from 40-cent range to as high as 72 cents in late-February.
Part of this increase and surge in trading volumes is being attributed to drilling results from Strateco Resources' (RSC/TSX-V) Matoush uranium property.
Consolidated Pacific has land right beside the location of this drilling location, and while both stocks have fallen off since the announcement, investors clearly have their eye on both of these companies.
Makes you just wonder... How our boys did at the show... Perhaps we will get some exciting news... Uranium was certainly the "HOT" topic at the show and with GLXI's easily minable rich finds I'm sure they turned a few eyebrows... keep your eyes peeled for big announcements... I got a good feeling about it...
customers house i worked at yesterday was feeding me the best coffee in the world last night.. i never drink coffee at night ... up early this am... will have to lay down for an hour !! LOL!! Oh well might as well do some research on GLXI!
Metal price forecasts from PDAC
Everyone at PDAC seems to have a prediction for where metal prices are heading. So the FP Trading Desk surveyed a wide range of attendees to find out where they think commodity prices are heading.
Here are some of the highlights.
Toronto Maple Leaf hockey legend Darryl Sittler declined to provide a forecast for the price of gold, saying he doesn't know anything about that "stuff." However, he quickly added "What is it around US$600?" Mr. Sittler clearly follows the market closer than he lets on. No gold price forecast, no autograph.
University of New Brunswick student David Shinkle, a Masters of Economic Geology student who is at the convention in search of a job, thinks uranium will definitely reach US$100 per pound due to continued demand from India and China.
Allan Barry, of the report bearing his name (also a consultant to RedStar Gold Corp.), thinks the supply and demand imbalance for metals will last a long time and is only beginning. He thinks gold will rise above US$1000 per ounce in the next few years.
Don Mosher, a partner at consultancy B&D Capital Partners, thinks gold will hit US$960 in 2007 and US$1500 in 2008.
Sandrine Lam from Rare Element Resources, says "gold is going up, as usual, but I don't know why." She says she can't imagine it going to US$1000 ("that's a bit high"), but thinks it could get to the US$800s in the short term.
Surprise, surpise, everyone at PDAC seems to be taking about US$100 uranium. The folks over at Ur Energy's booth are hearing from their people that 100 is indeed the number to watch.
Ray Zalnieriunas from Globex Mining Enterprises thinks gold could go higher than US$1000 per ounce as early as this Christmas, but more likely sometime in 2008.
And finally Nikolaos Cacos, who noted that there is more room for the market to rise because of the lack of "booth bunnies" at this year's event. "When their numbers max out, you know its time to sell." He sees gold hitting US$700 by the end of 2007, copper at US$2.60 per pound, and uranium at, you guessed it, US$100.
