Mother Jones was named magazine of the year on Tuesday for finding “new ways to engage audiences and continue its practice of fearless journalism,” the sponsors of the National Magazine Awards announced.
it's funny .. the ones who won.. We all read them and indeed look for them regularly .... N.Y. Magazine, N. Y. Times Magazine and Mother Jones .. New York magazine and The New York Times Magazine each won three awards: New York for magazine section, video and single-topic issue, and The Times Magazine for feature writing, essays and criticism, and public interest.
California Sunday won for design and photography, and Mother Jones won for reporting as well as for magazine of the year. Nineteen titles had received nominations in multiple categories, led by New York with 10. The Times Magazine received seven, and The New Yorker received five.
Known as the Ellies for the elephant-shaped statuettes given to winners, the National Magazine Awards are sponsored by the American Society of Magazine Editors in association with the Columbia Journalism School. The awards were announced at a ceremony at Cipriani Wall Street in Manhattan.
Three publications were first-time winners: GOOD for personal service, Huffington Post Highline for multimedia, and The Marshall Project for general excellence in literature, science and politics. Huffington Post Highline and The Marshall Project were the first digital-only winners in those categories.
Bon Appétit and ESPN The Magazine were repeat winners for general excellence: Bon Appétit in the service and lifestyle category, and ESPN The Magazine in news, sports and entertainment. Bon Appétit won a general excellence award in 2014 and ESPN The Magazine won in 2003 and 2006.
Modern Farmer won its first award for general excellence in special interest magazines. Also honored were Pacific Standard for feature photography, National Geographic in the website category, and Harper’s Magazine for columns and commentary, all for the first time in those categories.
it's great to come in and read these awards today .. !

U.S. military officials told Reuters that Trump approved his first covert counterterrorism operation
without sufficient intelligence, ground support or adequate backup preparations.
Asshole approved the operation without sufficient Intelligence, Ground Support OR
ADEQUATE BACKUP PREPARATIONS ..Therefore Navy Seal Bill OWENS is DEAD!
As a result, three officials said, the attacking SEAL team found itself dropping onto a reinforced al Qaeda base
defended by landmines, snipers, and a larger than expected contingent of heavily armed Islamist extremists.

But what’s more telling, perhaps, is not what Trump’s list included — but what it didn’t.
Some of the countries most devastated by terrorism from Islamic extremists were left out entirely. Whether that suggests that the administration thinks they received adequate coverage is anyone’s guess. But it was a glaring omission either way.
In 2015, nearly three quarters of all deaths from terrorist attacks occurred in five countries — Afghanistan, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan and Syria, according to the State Department. The White House chose not to include any attacks from Iraq, Nigeria and Syria on its list. The two others got a single mention each — a knife attack that wounded a U.S. citizen in Pakistan in 2015, and a suicide bombing that killed 14 Nepalese security guards in Afghanistan last year.
Similarly, between 2004 and 2013, about half of all terrorist attacks and 60 percent of fatalities from terrorist attacks took place in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan, Erin Miller, of the Global Terrorism Database at the University of Maryland, told the BBC.
It’s hard to precisely quantify how many victims of terrorism are Muslim. Some have floated statistics as high as 95 percent, and the U.S. government has published reports reflecting that number. But experts such as Miller say it’s difficult to determine how accurate the reports are because most data depends on news coverage, and often the religious affiliation of terrorist attack victims is not included.
“It’s not out of the realm of possibility, given the extreme concentration of attacks in majority-Muslim countries,” Miller told the BBC.
What the data show, according to the Global Terrorism Database reported by Voice of America, is that a vast majority of terrorist attacks — about 98 percent between 2001 and 2015 — occurred outside the U.S. and Western Europe, even if the White House’s list and rhetoric may suggest otherwise.
A Washington Post analysis of all terrorist attacks from the beginning of 2015 through the summer of 2016 found that the Middle East, Africa and Asia have seen “nearly 50 times more deaths from terrorism than Europe and the Americas.”

these folks need to treated ___WH official: We'll say 'fake news' until media realizes attitude of attacking the President is wrong
11:49 AM ET, Tue February 7, 2017
Chris Massie, CNN
(CNN)Sebastian Gorka, deputy assistant to President Donald Trump, said Monday that the administration will continue using the term "fake news" until the media understands that their "monumental desire" to attack the President is wrong.
"There is a monumental desire on behalf of the majority of the media, not just the pollsters, the majority of the media to attack a duly elected President in the second week of his term," Gorka, a former Breitbart editor who also holds a PhD in political science, told syndicated conservative radio host Michael Medved.
"That's how unhealthy the situation is and until the media understands how wrong that attitude is, and how it hurts their credibility, we are going to continue to say, 'fake news.' I'm sorry, Michael. That's the reality," he added.
Trump and his staff have repeatedly used the term "fake news" to discredit reporting on the presidential administration from mainstream outlets such as CNN and The New York Times, often offering no evidence to back up their disputes with those outlets' stories.
Earlier in the interview, Gorka was asked by Medved whether he would acknowledge that the administration's controversial statement on Holocaust Remembrance Day was "at least questionable in being the first such statement in many years that didn't recognize that Jewish extermination was the chief goal of the Holocaust."
Gorka replied by calling criticism of the statement "asinine," arguing that it was motivated by the media's desire to attack Trump.
"It's a Holocaust remembrance statement," Gorka said. "No, I'm not going to admit it. Because it's asinine. It's absurd. You're making a statement about the Holocaust. Of course it's about the Holocaust because that's what the statement's about. It's only reasonable to twist it if your objective is to attack the President."
Gorka also sparred with a caller who contended that "every time you call everything fake news, it just turns everyone except your hardcore fans off."
"Not everything's fake news," the caller added.
"You know, I would beg to differ," Gorka shot back. "Every single organ that generates these kinds of stories comes from the same clique of media organs that predicted that Hillary (Clinton) would win and that Brexit wouldn't occur. I know what fake news is. And it's coming from those organizations. It's time that you yourself understood that as well."

The U.S. military released a compendium of jihadi video Friday that it said showed “the sort of intelligence information” Navy SEALs seized in a deadly Jan. 29 raid in Yemen. There was just one problem: The clip included 10-year-old footage.
The video was released to the media midday as U.S. military officials said it was obtained in the search of a compound operated by al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), a terrorist group that has previously planned attacks in Western nations.
“The videos released today are samples of a series of detailed, do-it-yourself lessons intended for aspiring terrorist bomb-makers and included an exhortation to use those techniques to attack the West,” U.S. Central Command officials said in a news release. “The full-length videos, from which these clips were extracted, were taken from a computer seized by U.S. Special Operations service members during the raid.”

No, Not one of them have and remember ...White Americans Are The Biggest Terror Threat In The United States
Almost twice as many people have died in attacks by right-wing groups in America than have died in attacks by Muslim extremists.
By Global Post | November 27, 2015
White Americans are the biggest terror threat in the United States, according to a study by the New America Foundation. The Washington-based research organization did a review of “terror” attacks on US soil since Sept. 11, 2001 and found that most of them were carried out by radical anti-government groups or white supremacists.
Almost twice as many people have died in attacks by right-wing groups in America than have died in attacks by Muslim extremists. Of the 26 attacks since 9/11 that the group defined as terror, 19 were carried out by non-Muslims. Yet there are no white Americans languishing inside the prison camp at Guantanamo Bay. And there are no drones dropping bombs on gatherings of military-age males in the country’s lawless border regions.
Attacks by right-wing groups get comparatively little coverage in the news media. Most people will struggle to remember the shooting at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin that killed six people in 2012. A man who associated with neo-Nazi groups carried out that shooting. There was also the married couple in Las Vegas who walked into a pizza shop and murdered two police officers. They left a swastika on one of the bodies before killing a third person in a Wal-Mart parking lot. Such attacks are not limited to one part of the country. In 2011, two white supremacists went on a shooting spree in the Pacific Northwest, killing four people.
Terrorism is hard to define. But here is its basic meaning: ideological violence. In its study, the New America Foundation took a narrow view of what could be considered a terror attack. Most mass shootings, for instance, like Sandy Hook or the Aurora, Colorado movie theater shooting — both in 2012 — weren’t included. Also not included was the killing of three Muslim students in North Carolina earlier this year. The shooter was a neighbor and had strong opinions about religion. But he also had strong opinions about parking spaces and a history of anger issues. So that shooting was left off the list.
The killing of nine people at a church in Charleston, South Carolina last week was included. The shooter made it clear that his motivation was an ideological belief that white people are superior to black people. The shooting has cast new light on the issue of right-wing terrorism in the United States. But since it can’t really use Special Forces or Predator drones on US soil, it remains unclear how the government will respond.

Being a Jew in the Age of Trump
by Justin Rosario
January 31, 2017
On Wednesday, Donald Trump ordered a weekly list to be published of "crimes" committed by undocumented immigrants. On Friday, he blocked Muslims fleeing from war and persecution while giving Christians preference from the same countries.
On Saturday, I ordered two badges with the word "JUDE" stitched into the middle of a yellow Star of David. When they arrive, I will be stitching them to my two winter coats. We've seen this movie before and I'm just skipping to the end.
Let's rewind a bit. My mother was Jewish and my father is Puerto Rican. The end result of this odd combination (odd for the early 70s, at least) was a generically white baby. People have thought I was Irish, Italian, German, etc. (but almost never Jewish). I just have one of those faces. So I got to grow up "white" despite not actually being "white." That means I've never experienced real antisemitism or anti-Latino racism directed specifically at me. I was called a "dirty Jew" once by a pissed off customer but, frankly, I was more amazed he guessed I was Jewish than I was insulted.
I was not raised in a religious household and I thought of my two years in Hebrew school as more of a cultural experience as opposed to learning a religion. Beyond that, I've never given being Jewish much thought. I'm not proud of being Jewish (or Puerto Rican for that matter) and I'm certainly not ashamed of it, I just am. And growing up in Brooklyn, with New York City having the second largest population of Jews in the world next to Tel Aviv, there simply wasn't much anti-Jew speech going on. Being Jewish was just normal.
But just because I didn't give being Jewish much thought didn't mean I didn't pay attention to our history of being hated and exterminated. I was quite aware of the Holocaust even though my grandmother didn't speak about it. I was aware of the history of Pogroms in Eastern Europe and Russia, something else we didn't talk about even though my grandparents immigrated from Russia. I was also aware, through movies, that antisemitism is quite popular in the United States, particularly in the South.
Right now, the right pretends to love Jews in order to use Israel as a cudgel against liberals. But I'm old enough to remember the regular conservative complaints about "Jew York," "Jewywood" and "The Jew-controlled media." The American right, especially in the South, still despises us. I didn't care because fuck those guys, I lived in the North. I was safe in New York and perfectly camouflaged by my lack of distinguishing ethnic features. I got to go about my life and not think about my heritage as something anyone would care about; a variation of white privilege if you will.
But now I have to think about it. With the election of white nationalism to the White House, my heritage suddenly matters. If there's one thing I learned from my casual acquaintance with Jewish history, it's this: Sooner or later, they always come for us. I'm Jewish and so are my children. My daughter Anastasia has blue eyes and she's only 1/4 Jewish but that won't matter. The Nazis carted away people who didn't even think of themselves as Jews because of their ancestry. When the Trump administration is done with the Muslims, the Mexicans, the Chinese and whoever else they deem a "danger" to the country, history is crystal clear on this point: They will come for the Jews.
It's easy to dismiss all this as hyperventilating hyperbole. This is the United States! We just don't do things like that! But to think that belies a profound ignorance of history. We put hundreds of thousands of American citizens into concentration camps because they were Japanese. When the KKK was rampaging through the South, lynching black people and burning entire black communities to the ground, [ http://atlantablackstar.com/2013/12/04/8-successful-aspiring-black-communities-destroyed-white-neighbors/ ] the federal government stood by and did nothing. We fought the Civil War because half of the country couldn't tolerate the idea of treating blacks as human beings.
It may feel like I'm beating the point to death but it's important to understand just how deep racism runs in America's DNA. The Holocaust is the natural conclusion of the Eugenics movement, the belief that there some "races" are genetically superior to others. But the Nazis did not invent eugenics. America did. [ http://historynewsnetwork.org/article/1796 ] We literally created the template that led to the mass murder of millions of innocent people for being the "wrong" race.
So, to paraphrase The Newsroom's Will McAvoy, when you say "It can't happen here! America doesn't do things like that!", I don't know what the fuck you're talking about. Trump's little Nazi followers have been dreaming of a race war for decades. Their bible is "The Turner Diaries," a book that depicts the glorious triumph of the white man over Those People, ending with the extinction Jews, blacks, Asians and Latinos. And one of their leaders, Steve Bannon, is currently pulling Trump's strings.
It is indisputable that America has a long and vile history of racism and racial violence. Accusing me of employing a slippery slope argument only works if we're not already on a slope we've been on before, sliding at high speed towards a well-known and well-understood destination. If Trump is allowed to ignore the Constitution now, he will continue to violate it, each time going just a little bit further; every step getting just a little bit easier for the public to swallow.
Will Trump get away with it? Maybe, maybe not. The massive protests and resistance suggest that America 2017 is not Germany 1932:
But Trump has brought white nationalism into our discourse and there's a vast right wing media operation hard at work [ https://mediamatters.org/research/2017/01/30/right-wing-media-wrongly-cite-obama-justify-trump-s-muslim-ban/215180 ] normalizing Trump's dangerous behavior and rhetoric.
Like most of you, even though I spent my life learning to hate Nazis and their collaborators, it was always an abstract hate. I never thought I would have to deal with that kind of evil. But now it's my turn to decide if I will resist or bow my head and look away. It's my turn to stand and be counted.
There's a WWI cartoon I saw once that always stuck with me. It was a father sitting with his children with a pensive look on his face as his daughter asks, "Daddy, what did YOU do in the Great War?"
When my children go to college and read about what happened between 2017 and 2021. I want to be able to look them in the eye and say I stood against fascism.
When I look in the mirror, I want to be able to say that when they came for my Muslim neighbors, I spoke out even though I was not a Muslim.
When I die, I want people at my funeral to know that I fought white nationalism and never backed down in fear.
And when people on the street ask me why I'm wearing a yellow Star of David with the word "JUDE" stitched into it, I'm going to tell them that any country that bans Muslims will eventually ban me and I am not afraid. Fuck fear.
Here I am, motherfuckers. Come and get me.

Many are professionals, doctors, itt stuff, dentists .. and I read just the other day that our Meat Packing plants are employing quite a few AND they do a darn good job. They are excellent workers. You must realize that they do MOST all things with their hands at home, besides their jobs that they go to. they do not go out and hire people to do maintenance work or other work.. they have learned how to do it themselves and they sure have learned how to kill and roast their own sheep...Their Dads teach them. Many skills and skillsets are passed down to these lovely people. And by the way, Syrian refugees have committed zero attacks in the United States.

Iran slams 'provocative' US warning over missile test
Tehran will not yield to 'useless' threats from 'an inexperienced person' over missile programme, official says.
Tehran has said its missiles do not breach UN resolutions

Iran has rejected a warning from US President Donald Trump's administration over its latest missile test as unfounded.
Bahram Ghasemi, the Iranian foreign ministry spokesman, was quoted as saying on Thursday by state news agency IRNA that the claims were "baseless, repetitive and provocative".
"Instead of thanking Iran for its continued fight against terrorism ... the American government is practically helping the terrorists by claims about Iran that are baseless, repetitive and provocative," he said.
Also on Thursday, a top adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Iran would not yield to "useless" US threats from "an inexperienced person" over its ballistic missile programme.
"This is not the first time that an inexperienced person has threatened Iran ... the American government will understand that threatening Iran is useless," Ali Akbar Velayati said, without identifying any US official specifically in his comments.
"Iran does not need permission from any country to defend itself," he was quoted as saying by the semi-official Fars news agency.
President Donald Trump himself tweeted earlier on Thursday that the Islamic republic was now formally "on notice" after Sunday's missile test.
"Iran has been formally PUT ON NOTICE for firing a ballistic missile. Should have been thankful for the terrible deal the US made with them!" Trump tweeted, echoing similar comments by National Security Advisor Michael Flynn on Wednesday.
The nuclear deal
Trump was referring to the nuclear accord between Tehran and world powers that took effect in January 2016, lifting international sanctions in return for curbs on Iran's atomic programme.
Flynn insisted that the missile test was "in defiance of UN Security Council Resolution 2231", which calls on Iran not to test missiles capable of delivering a nuclear weapon.
Iran confirmed on Wednesday that it had tested a ballistic missile, but denied that it had violated the terms of the nuclear deal.
Tehran has said its missiles do not breach UN resolutions because they are for defence purposes only and are not designed to carry nuclear warheads.

NATO calls on Russia to stop violence in Ukraine
NATO chief says Russia must end the violence as both
sides move heavy artillery close to front line.
The death toll from the latest escalation in fighting in Ukraine rose to 19 on February 1 as international alarm rang out [AFP]
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has called on Russia to use its "considerable influence" to end fighting in eastern Ukraine after a renewed surge in violence there.
Moscow-backed rebels and government forces have traded blame for the flare-up in the industrial east that has seen the highest casualty rate since mid-December and cut off power and water to thousands of civilians on both sides of the front line.
The shelling eased on Wednesday, but the January 29 to 31 clashes near the Kiev-held frontline town of Avdiyivka brought the festering conflict back into focus amid warnings of a looming humanitarian crisis.
"We call for an immediate return to the ceasefire," Stoltenberg said in Brussels. "We call on Russia to use its considerable influence over the separatists to bring the violence to an end."
Ukraine and NATO accuse Russia of providing troops and weapons to support separatist rebels in the country's east in a conflict that has killed 10,000 people since April 2014. Moscow denies that.
Michael Bociurkiw, a spokesman for the European security body OSCE's mission to Ukraine, told Al Jazeera that the new US administration was not being clear about how it would deal with the rising tensions.
"In the previous administration, Russians were really attacked for their activities in eastern Ukraine but the Trump administration is really sending mixed signals," he said.
"The big fear is that Trump may withdraw support for the sanctions against Russia and that could turn a chain reaction where Greece, Italy and other EU members may also withdraw support."
The NATO factor
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko is planning a referendum on whether Ukraine should join the NATO alliance given polls that show 54 percent of Ukrainians now favour such a move, Germany's Funke Mediengruppe newspaper chain reported on Thursday.
"Four years ago, only 16 percent (of the Ukrainian people) favoured Ukraine's entry into NATO. Now it's 54 percent," the media group quoted Poroshenko as saying in an interview.
"As president, I am guided by the views of my people, and I will hold a referendum on the issue of NATO membership."
He vowed to "do all I can to achieve membership in the transatlantic alliance" if the people voted in favour.
NATO and Ukraine have had a close relationship since the early 1990s, and their ties are one of the "most substantial" of NATO's partnerships, according to the alliance's website.
However, any move by NATO to admit Ukraine would spark tensions with Russia, which says NATO already violated earlier promises by admitting Poland and other eastern European countries in the 1990s.
Poroshenko also predicted it would not take long until Ukraine fulfilled the entry criteria to join the European Union.
He said Kiev had reduced its budget deficit and inflation, and had taken important steps to reduce corruption.
The EU last year spelled out limits to a landmark cooperation agreement with Ukraine to address Dutch concerns, but said the deal did not make Ukraine a candidate for EU membership.
