Brown dwarfs are substellar objects too low in mass to sustain hydrogen-1 fusion reactions in their cores, unlike main-sequence stars, which can. They occupy the mass range between the heaviest gas giants and the lightest stars, with an upper limit around 75[1] to 80 Jupiter masses (). Brown dwarfs heavier than about 13 are thought to fuse deuterium and those above ~65 , fuse lithium as well.[2]
However, for some years now there has been debate concerning what criterion to use for defining the separation between a brown dwarf and a giant planet at very low brown dwarf masses (~13 Jupiter masses).[3] One school of thought is based on formation, and another on interior physics.[3]
Dwarfs are categorized by spectral classification, with the major types being M, L, T, and Y.[3] Despite their name, most brown dwarfs would appear magenta to the human eye.[3]
Another debate is whether brown dwarfs are required to have experienced fusion at some point in their history. Some planets are known to orbit brown dwarfs: 2M1207b, MOA-2007-BLG-192Lb, and 2MASS J044144b. Brown dwarfs may have fully convective surfaces and interiors, with no chemical differentiation by depth.[4]
WTF is a Brown Dwarf.

The Jefferson Bible, or The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth as it is formally titled, was a book constructed by Thomas Jefferson in the latter years of his life by cutting and pasting numerous sections from the New Testament as extractions of the doctrine of Jesus. Jefferson's condensed composition is especially notable for its exclusion of all miracles by Jesus and most mentions of the supernatural, including sections of the four gospels which contain the Resurrection and most other miracles, and passages indicating Jesus was divine.[

A new type of microbe has been found at a lake buried under Antarctica's thick ice, according to news reports. The find may unveil clues of the surrounding environment in the lake, according to scientists.
The bacteria, said to be only 86 percent similar to other types known to exist on Earth, was discovered in a water sample taken from Lake Vostok, which sits under more than 2 miles (3 kilometers) of Antarctic ice. The freshwater lake has likely been buried, unaltered, under the ice for the past million years.
Russian scientists reportedly obtained the water samples in 2012 when they drilled all the way down to the lake's surface. They ran the bacteria's composition through a global database and were not able to find anything similar to its type. Scientists couldn't even figure out the bacteria's descendents.
"After putting aside all possible elements of contamination, DNA was found that did not coincide with any of the well-known types in the global database," said Sergey Bulat, a geneticist at the Saint Petersburg Institute of Nuclear Physics, in a quote attributed in media reports to RIA Novosti news service.
"We are calling this life form unclassified and unidentified," he added.
Understanding the environment
While the bacteria still needs to be confirmed, its potential is already drawing attention from other Antarctic scientists.
Life forms are shaped by the environment they live in, and often shape that environment in return. Finding out more about bacteria in Lake Vostok, therefore, will help researchers picture what living in the lake is like for these tiny microorganisms.
"The study of looking at the organisms and their environment is really the study of ecology," said Alison Murray, an associate research professor at the Desert Research Institute (an environmental research group based in Nevada) who also does Antarctic research herself.
"By learning more about the life forms that live in Vostok, that will probably teach us a bit about the lake itself," Murray told OurAmazingPlanet.
Murray, who is familiar with the Russian researchers' work, said the group is a "very careful team of scientists" who would have put the bacteria through several validity tests before releasing the news.
Understanding bacterial life on Earth is also considered a possible research direction for finding life on other planets, including Mars.
'If this is real, it is very exciting'
The 86 percent similarity figure, to Murray, is a plausible indicator that this could be a new type of bacteria. Since all Earthly life is related to each other in some way, anything below about 80 percent would draw concern, Murray added.
At least one other scientist, however, expressed caution about the finding, saying that more information is needed before drawing conclusions.
"If this is real, it is very exciting," Peter Doran, a microbiologist at the University of Illinois at Chicago, wrote in an e-mail to OurAmazingPlanet. He is a frequent visitor to the Arctic and Antarctica for his research.
"I would caution, though, that this type of 'press release' science is a little dangerous. It really needs to go through the rigor of peer review by other experts in the field before I'll jump on board," he said. "Having others looking at their methods and data will provide support for their conclusions."
Russian scientists successfully dug through to the buried lake again in January this year, retrieving more samples for later analysis.
Meanwhile, a British team had to call off their quest in December to dig to Lake Ellsworth, another Antarctic subglacial lake, after they encountered technical difficulties.

Holy Shit great timing read this
DNA evidence has revealed that the oldest known common male ancestor is 340,000 years old, more than twice as old as previous estimates.New Scientist reports that the sample comes from a recently deceased man named Albert Perry. After the African-American South Carolina man died, one of his relatives submitted a sample of his DNA to a company called Family Tree DNA for analysis.
The findings were published in the The American Journal of Human Genetics and may require researchers to adjust the known timeline of humankind’s evolution.
And the historical mark came at something of a bargain—the company does historical DNA analysis on individuals for about $150.
All previously compared DNA samples pointed to a common Y chromosome traced back to man who lived between 60,000 and 140,000 years ago. But Perry’s DNA sample broke the trend, not matching up with this common ancestor.
"It's a cool discovery," Jon Wilkins of the Ronin Institute in Montclair, N.J., told New Scientist. "We geneticists have been looking at Y chromosomes about as long as we've been looking at anything. Changing where the root of the Y-chromosome tree is at this point is extremely surprising."
After the initial tests on Perry’s DNA, geneticists at the University of Arizona conducted further tests to confirm the anomaly. The Y chromosome in Perry’s test matched up with those of 11 men who all lived in one village in Cameroon.
University of Arizona researcher Michael Hammer says Perry’s DNA suggests there may have been an earlier species of humans that went extinct—but not before interbreeding with the more modern version of man.

Unidentified Floating Object? One expert breaks down Russell Crowe's UFO sighting (YouTube)Oscar winning actor Russell Crowe has received a ton of attention, and ridicule, for posting a series of pictures he said show a UFO flying past his home in Sydney.
Some of the initial criticism suggested Crowe was simply trying to drum up attention for a new film project. And as CNET’s Chris Matyszczyk points out, the photos weren’t even taken by Crowe—they were shot by cinematographer Duane Manwiller—four years ago.
That contradicts claims made by Crowe himself, who says the images were shot while he and a friend were attempting to capture images of fruit bats.
Even Crowe’s manager seems baffled by the Twitter postings. When asked by the London Telegraph for an explanation, Grant Vandenberg said, “I have no idea.”
As it turns out, the real explanation turns out to be far less exciting than anyone thought.
ParaBreakdown’s Phil Poling does an excellent job of breaking down Crowe’s video.
First, Poling explains that the video is not in fact time lapse photography, it’s a timed exposure, a fairly commonly technique that often results in stretched or other unusual looking lighting effects. Second, whoever took the images used a telephoto lense, which distorts the perceived distance in the images.
“The third part of the equation is location, or viewpoint,” Poling says in the video.
“I was a little surprised that Russell didn’t realize what the photo actually was. But then again, it does look a little strange when subjected to photographic trickery,” he explains. “But the truth is, he sees this every day right outside his window coming from the marina.”
“That’s right, it’s a sailboat,” Poling said.
So, could this be Crowe’s way of telling the world he’s up for doing another "Master and Commander" film?
I disagree there chief life is complicated. It requires making tough choices in which nobody wins.
Great post.

Here is reality
Belling the Cat
Illustrated by Suzanne Palmer
Once upon a time, all the mice met, together in council, to discuss the best means of securing themselves against the attacks of the cat.
After several suggestions had been debated, a Mouse of some standing and experience got up and said, "I think I have hit upon a plan which will ensure our safety in the future, provided you approve and carry it out. It is that we should fasten a bell around the neck of our enemy the cat, which will, by its tinkling, warn us of her approach."
This proposal was warmly applauded, and it had been decided to adopt it, when an old Mouse got upon his feet and said, "I agree with you all that the plan before us is an admirable one: but may I ask who is going to bell the cat?"
It is easy to propose impossible remedies.
