Only a month and a half after the 2006 season wrapped up, NASCAR teams are already on the track with 2007 in mind.
Crews finished the first round of preseason testing at Daytona International Speedway this week and as News 13's Sports Director Sean McDowell tells us, some drivers are approaching this year's Daytona 500, as if it is a completely new ballgame.
The hum of happiness might be the only predictable thing from this year's Daytona 500 testing sessions. Greg Biffle might be the hungriest man at the World Center of Racing.
He is back behind the wheel of the #16, after a fiery off-season accident during testing nearly killed him. Biffle cannot imagine quitting, and now, he is back, with new crew chief Pat Tryson.
“When we get to some of these other places, like Bristol, certainly will be a place we'll get scrambling," Biffle said. "These first couple of races like California and our Vegas test. The team is coming together really well. I like Pat and the way he executes things."
Precious few have cranked the engines on this track like Dale Jarrett. He is swapping his Robert Yates Racing Ford for one of the brand new Toyotas, which make their first run at NASCAR's premiere division this year.
“We brought in a different car for our other car today. It is a little different build. I'm excited to see what it will do in the draft. We'll get out this afternoon and get a lot more. I've been pleased with what I see so far. Jarrett said.
It is a brand new day for Casey Mears too. The new man in the #25, leaves Chip Ganassi's team for Rick Hendrick's star-studded stable. Mears wonders what he can do with horses under the hood.
Mears said: “It's almost a relief to me. Not a relief, I don't want to say that. That sounds bad on places that I've been in the past. I think going to Hendrick Motorsports, knowing that there's no question on whether the equipment is there or not, is, it feels good
What's more, we may see a new man in the #8. Dale Earnhardt, Junior continues his contract holdout with DEI, meaning the most popular man in the sport could miss the biggest race of the season.
Some major names will be driving the new Toyotas this year, including three-time Daytona 500 champion Dale Jarrett.
Michael Waltrip will use Toyotas exclusively for his new team and Jeremy Mayfield will also be driving a Camry.
