Rock beats Widow to ship first dual-core notebook
http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2005/12/16/rock_ships_first_dual-core_laptop/
"UK system builder Rock has won the race to ship the first notebook based on an AMD dual-core processor. While the company was understandably keen to trumpet its achievement - it sent The Register at least five copies of a press release on the matter - we can also confirm that a number of readers received their Rocks early yesterday morning.
Rock has been touting its Xtreme 64 notebook, based on AMD's Athlon 64 X2..."

cd - Yes, so far things look promising. :)
Joey - Perhaps you ought to consider the ramifications of Opteron's vastly superior performance per watt, especially in light of Intel's new performance per watt emphasis! :)
Dell XPS -"Serious about gamers" - NOT!

Blackford first look - Can anyone tell for sure if this test uses the Blackford or the Blackford VS chipset?
http://www.anandtech.com/IT/showdoc.aspx?i=2644
It outperforms Opteron 280 as configured, but performance per watt is way behind.
True, but it's nice to see it start.
I'm sure liking this de-coupling of AMD and Intel!
CJ - LOL! Great PR idea, but it probably doesn't fit their needs.
avatar - I doubt it. Most of Intel's end users aren't big on keeping up with the IT press, at least not in a timely enough manner for it to matter at this point.
Paul
AAMMDD - And if AMD found a different location, those nut jobs would find some other "endangered" creature to whine about.
Paul
Keith - Very good news; I was just reading that as well! :)
Guess Best Buy should've sold more AMD!
Best Buy misses profit targets

Tenchu - You'd be surprised. Cramer's sudden switch brought about several comments to the effect of "Cramer's an idiot/clown, but we'll take the positive effect he can bring about!".
imho - More like Intel is cowering in the locker room, praying that its "magic gloves" arrive in time to keep it from being thrown out into the street, where all the folks it's ticked off my just devour it. ;)
Now this is funny! Check out the P4 box the board shipped in! (The sticker on the right front edge tells the story)

Tenchu - An old Paris airport? ;)
smooth2o - re: "Apparently, you've never been through an allocation issue. When you impact a companies revenues there's hell to pay."
Kind of like Intel and their chipset predicament, eh?
I banker - Which will be wonderful if they manage not to tick off their customers in the meantime.
smooth - I'm assuming you missed the " ".
:)
smooth - What crisis did Los Angeles have?
re: $100 laptop - No one much expected Intel-ers to understand the concept of good will. Foreign concept to them. You can just feel the arrogance of Barrett's statement about what consumers want oozing through.
Hector has a little better handle on what the target audience is interested in, having come from similar circumstances.
Hmmm.... Guess they have to get rid of the things somewhere....
http://www.reed-electronics.com/ednmag/article/CA6253385.html
Prescotts, that is.
Hope AMD aren't really shooting themselves in the foot here! Good will is hard enough to earn, much less win back!!

AMD and Sun better capitalize on it!

oc detective - Could be, but at newegg at least, the prices were a good bit lower than they are now on the low end Venices even before the socket 939 Opterons were carried there.
Keith - I've only noticed them popping up in the very recent past, and resellerratings.com has no reviews of them, so I'd be hesitant to try them yet.
Paul
Keith - Some prices have increased substantially at newegg.
chipguy - I suspect that by the time you're done, you'll have spent enough time picking at cd's input that you could have actually used it instead to give a decent understanding of what's been revealed, as well as the likely implications, to the rest of the "great unwashed" here. It's a shame, too; I'd love to hear your honest analysis of it to help fill out the picture.
Paul
chipguy - If you can't see the difference between a technology that is successfully produced , marketed and sold to the larger x86 marketand one that's "tested" and shelved/trashed(or in DECpaq's case, somewhat successfully sold in a much smaller market and now vanishing), well, so be it...
chipguy - But none of those produced any of them in volume.
muzohub - Mystery solved - my mistake, I was looking for dl585-tpcc-sql2k5.pdf.
It appears to have been pulled - I'm looking at the ftp directory, and there are 8 dl585 results, but not that one. Same result either via Firefox or my ftp client.
Thanks, Keith, got lost in all the code names!
CJ re: "Reality is that I am unpublished. That will be changing soon..."
Looking forward to it. Don't know how well I'll understand it, but it'll be interesting nonetheless!
CJ - So speeding up the N-channel speeds up the whole gate in general, right? Not just under certain conditions or transitions?
BTW, Thanks for the resource links, they'll come in handy.
smooth - re: "there is no difference between the capabilities of these two (three with TI) companies to do the same process manufacture."
Sure there is - AMD is the only one of the three with success at volume manufacturing of powerful PC CPUs. Granted, it's not Intel's volume, but it beats IBM and TI hands down.
alan81,CJ - Could you put the impact of speeding up the P-channels a little more into layman's terms(or at least non-EE layman terms)? How are they used differently as opposed to the N-channels? What's the general % breakdown of N vs. P? Is it generally paired/complementary?
fpg - But I thought Presidio was virtualization technology?
I banker - I think I'd have to agree. There are too many different characters fighting to be the center of the home system, and Intel's not used to fighting in an arena with so many seasoned, tough opponents. Without any brand value in that arena(or effective monopoly status) to help them, they have a tough row to hoe.
