IN A WEEK or two, Intel will release its updated 533MHz system bus Pentium Ms, and it looks like DFI will be ready for the processors and new chipsets.....
More Competition Could Hurt 2005 Memory Prices

Intel to introduce value versions of 915 chipset in January
http://www.digitimes.com/mobos/a20041223A2003.html
In an effort to boost sales of its new Pentium 4 platform, Intel has decided to introduce two value versions of its 915 chipset – the 915PL and 915GL – in the latter half of January 2005, according to sources at Taiwan motherboard makers.
The 915PL/GL will support DDR400 only, instead of supporting both DDR and DDR2 which is a standard for Intel 915P and 915G chipsets, the sources noted. The new chips are still compatible to the LGA775 CPUs and the PCIe technology.
So much for the droid dream that HT would become a widely
used standard. Oh well, you win some (EM64T) and you lose
some (PCI express).
"Obviously", the intel Black Shirt Squad has once again, bribed, or coerced, or strong armed, or paid off, someone to think, say, or write, that intel has something that people want more then the something from AMD
FEATURE-Intel's army of chip makers fights for dominance
http://yahoo.reuters.com/financeQuoteCompanyNewsArticle.jhtml?duid=mtfh88334_2004-12-21_19-24-52_n21...
CHANDLER, Ariz., Dec 21 (Reuters) - From a wind-swept industrial site in the Sonoran Desert, Intel Corp. (INTC.O: Quote, Profile, Research) , appears to be gearing up for battle.
Construction crews hammer away at an unprecedented $2 billion upgrade to one of Intel's two Arizona factories, preparing the world's largest chip maker to safeguard its lead in manufacturing from resurgent rivals and to put recent costly missteps behind it.
American Jobs Creation Act
http://tinyurl.com/6qphk
The particular aspect of this legislation that has piqued Schnapp's interest is the one that "allows U.S.-based corporations with overseas operations to repatriate as much as $500 million per year in overseas income at a 5.25 percent tax rate rather than the usual 35 percent tax rate" -- provided that the companies use the repatriated money for certain purposes, "such as job creation and capital expenditures."
To be sure, not every firm that can repatriate foreign income will choose to do so. But it's clear that many will. In recent SEC filings, for example, Intel (INTC: news, chart, profile) announced that it may repatriate as much as $6 billion of foreign income........
Are you sure this House didn't work for IBM? Disgruntled ex executives are a dime a dozen. Thanks very much for the story. There will always be amdroids who believe all that is written in the inquirer.
Ya know, , it's no surprise to me, that Mr House would not speak well of I2 or intel now. From the articles I've read on the web, and a couple posted here, and on SI INTC Thread, about Mr House's time at INTC, I'm guessing, that after his documented "Disagree and Commit" on Itanium, he was not happy working at INTC anymore. Things most likely went downhill from there, until he left for another job....... and another job after that. If I'm reviewing this resume, my question is, Why can't this guy seem to fit in?
Also, Mr House, may have an additional axe to grind. I'm guessing, that based on "historical norms", I'm sort of starting to get the impression that Mr House may not have done all that well on his last couple of Focal's, while he was at intel. Most likely, "Equals" and "Satisfactory", doesn't do much for R&R or Advancement, at that level, and it could have been "by mutual agreement", that Mr House decided to "seek employment elsewhere".
Can you say, I.R.?
Why HP still supports Itanium
Everyone has been thinking that HP was the dupe in the Itanium partnership, but as time passes, it is becoming clear who will be getting the short end of the stick in this relationship going forward. And it isn't HP. It is Intel, which would have probably killed off Itanium a year or two ago (we surmise) if it were not for one fact: Intel has a contractual arrangement that forces it to supply HP with Itanium chips, probably so long as HP desires them. And with HP-UX and now OpenVMS ported to and soon to be only available on Itanium, HP most definitely wants those Itanium chips for its Integrity-based servers. If Intel kills Itanium, then HP will sue it for breach of contract.
Wow..... I have to say, that's a point of view and opinion, that never occured to me.... Interesting. If that's true though, then the thing I don't understand is, why is intel continuing development of I2? Why would intel continue to improve Itanium under these circumstances? I mean, if you are just making a product because you contractually have to make it, then what is the incentive, or business reason to improve it?

during a visit to intel chandler one summer i came across the "smoker's lounge" outside when moving between buildings. there was a huge volume of mist being emitted, ostensibly to keep folks feeling a bit cooler while they killed themselves on tobacco.
Oh man, those misting systems are cool (pun intended). The best ones use High pressure water, through very small sprayers, and studies have shown that they can lower the air temperature in the vicinity of the systems ~ 20F. Most places that have any kind of "outdoor seating", or "outdoor waiting", have them. I think they should erect a statue in downtown Phoenix to whoever invented those things

TAIPEI, Dec 14, 2004 (AFX-Asia via COMTEX) --Spansion LLC, a joint venture between US-based Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD) and Japan's Fujitsu Ltd, is likely to take on Macronix International Co Ltd (2337.TW) as a partner to make mirror flash memory chips, the Economic Daily News reported, without naming a source.......
Once the world's largest flash memory chip supplier, Spansion has seen its market share slashed to 13.5 pct from 30 pct due to fierce competition from Samsung Electronics Co and Intel Corp, it added.

Morrowinder, unfortunately the post you responded to was "moderated."
Which makes me wonder. Why can't IHub automatically ban someone who has a high ratio of deleted posts to posts that meet the basic standards of courtesy and decency?
Tenchu
I thought Morrow's post was still a very entertaining post. The post it replied to, IMO, did not contribute value to the thread (surprise!), and was simply intended to inflame the thread regulars. Yes, me too. However, the mandatory "required reason" I selected prior to Moderation, was "personal attack".
FYI, actually, moderated posts are not really deleted. I can still see them, in "Manage Mode", given to Moderators. They just have a red X next to the listing. Also, as I understand it, there is a database of Moderated posts that are reviewed by Admin Matt. AFAIK, He reviews all moderations, and the "required reason", and he has the option of restoring a moderated post, if in his opinion the Moderator was incorrect. So far, since I took over Mod, none of the moderated posts have been restored.
However, to be fair, if anyone wishes to contest a Moderated Post in a PM to Matt, I'm OK with that. I can also provide specific message numbers, of Moderated posts, in PM, in order to make it easier for Members and Non-Members to do so.
As far as automatically banning someone, from the past handlimg of such issues, Matt seems to go with the route of "Jail Time", once or twice, before banning. I don't know what "qualifies" a person to "Go to Jail, go directly to jail, do not pass go, do not collect $200". I would guess that specifivc PM complaints to Matt, might be a factor.
It's interesting that you are attributing contradictory behavior to two companies, to fit the facts as you would like to see them.
Dear "Black Pot"
And I think that it's interesting that you are attributing a decision that may, or may not have been made by HP in this one case, for any number of reasons, to be some sort of indicator of the future of IPF.
I guess we all have a tendency look at things, in such a way as to fit the facts as we would like to see them, in order to justify our preconceived beliefs, including you, eh?
Sincerly
The "Kettle"
What does it say about IPF's future if the co-inventor is "thinking" that there best proposal includes Opteron? I can't believe you actually suggested such a concept.
I don't know what it says to you about IPF, but it says to me that IF HP didn't submit an IPF design, then maybe HP may be allot stupider then I thought. Maybe they don't want the business. Or maybe, everybody makes mistakes, and HP simply screwed this one up. Perhaps they will be smarter next time and submit an IPF design, then they might have a better chance of winning. Maybe not. But just because HP may have had their head up their arse this time, doesn't say anything about IPF's future as a whole.
Yes, that would be quite telling, if HP thought there best proposal included an Opteron system. They may have lost this particular competition, but there future is bright.
The point is, if they "thought" to use Opteron, because they "thought" it was the best, they were wrong, and they lost. They probably should have gone with the winner IPF instead. Such stupidity, if continued, doesn't foretell a "bright future" for them, as far as I can see.
Semi, let's not forget that HP, co-inventor and largest supplier of IPF by a magnitude, also lost. Makes you wonder.
Yeah, what it makes me wonder is, if maybe HP submitted an Opteron system instead of IPF? do wonder..... Is that maybe why they lost?
Then what do you make of Elmer's and SmallPops' analysis?
http://investorshub.com/boards/read_msg.asp?message_id=4805392
http://investorshub.com/boards/read_msg.asp?message_id=4806693
Hummmmmm, I think we can all agree that "open architecture", and "standard components", can possibly, be interpreted in several different ways, by different decision making people. Perhaps IBM DOES consider their Power solution, to be "standard components". And wouldn't running Power on some variation of UNIX, make it "open Architecture"?
Maybe IBM wasn't as smart as many people on this thread apparently think they should have been, by choosing a Montecito bid, and instead maybe what they did, was the stupid thing, with a Power bid..... and lost
I don't know what IBM bidded with. This was my point all along. IBM also has IPF designs. How can one (chipguy) know for certain that IBM did not bid with it? If Montecito is sampling right now would you not agree that IBM has samples up and running also? They could of bid with it.
The thing is, In that scenario, I'm having trouble believing that with IBM's relative minimal enthusiasm, or support of IPF up to this point, that they would bid with an intel product, instead of their own Power product. It just doesn't make sense, intuitively or logically, to me, that they would do that, when they barely even acknowledge any IBM/IPF existence. As far as which is "better", I agree with you, we'll have to wait and see.

Re: centrino; and from the cunsomer's point of view you want a wireless conection that is on when you turn on your laptop with a minium anount of hassel, adjustments, looking for drivers.....
I think Not just for wireless, but for everything. If a consumer is going to go for a media platform solution, it better not be more difficult to operate then the current tv remote.
Also, I have to admit, while I like having my Centrino capability to link up with my companies wireless netwrok, just by pressing Fn F5, it's a PITA to then have to "load up" the VPN seperately.
Has there everbeen a discussion that looked at total product solutions instead of cpus. What Intel / AMD provide to OEMs on top of the cpu itself? In addition what value that has? I really feel Intel is a total solution provider although portions of the solution lag, the end experiance is better. Software is important to Flash and CPU in customer selection. I don't see many referances to AMD software in any market.
I think you may have hit the nail on the head. Intel has proven IMO with it's Centrino "Platform", that it's an idea who's time has come. Sure, you CAN go and buy similar functional chips from different vendors, but the point is, the MB Makers don't HAVE to. One source, one contact, one purchase order. Streamlines the whole process.
Also, If the future is to move to some sort of Media Center, the systems themselves most likely will become more complex, and providers that can offer The Whole Package, should profit nicely.
"Profitability" does not necessarily mean customary "profits", it is a standard accounting term, it can be positive, it can be negative, technically. If a product moves from a very negative profitability
Negative Profitability....... Hummmmmmm...... Isn't that an OxyMoron? Sort of like "Jumbo Shrimp"......... Military Intelligence....... and "AMDroid Logic"?
I always called it "A Loss". Silly me.

CHARLOTTE (AP) -- AT&T Corp. said Friday it has teamed up with chip giant Intel Corp. to work on research and development and produce products together.

Who has sold the most x86-64 server CPUs?
http://www.overclockers.com/tips00698/
The answer, of course, is Intel.
The key words, of course, being, "1 M (that means million) Xeon processor EM64T shipped over 6 months. > 3X competition's (that means Opteron) volume in 1/3 of the time.
That means Intel sold over 1,000,000 x86-64 Xeons in six months, while AMD sold maybe 350,000 Opterons in eighteen months. Since AMD did sell some Opterons those first twelve months, the real head-on-head count the last six months is probably Intel's 1,000,000+ vs AMD's 200-250,000.
Like it or not, Intel outsells AMD in x86-64 processors. If you were led to believe otherwise, you were misled (as well may have been those who directly led you), and that's not good.

I suspect most likely, it's Mr "McGroo". He seems to be quite happy to be down on his knees, in praise of AMD and Hector recently.

NEW YORK, Dec 2 (Reuters) - Shares of Intel Corp.(INTC.O: Quote, Profile, Research) , the world's largest computer-chip maker, jumped over 7 percent in extended hours of trading on Thursday after it raised its quarterly revenue target, citing strong worldwide demand for its microprocessors.
Intel to Finish Year Strong

Intel (INTC:Nasdaq - commentary - research) handed tech investors a Christmas gift Thursday, boosting its fourth-quarter revenue estimate sharply on strong worldwide demand for its microprocessors.
Intel put quarterly revenue at $9.3 billion and $9.5 billion and said gross margin would range between 55% and 57% in the December quarter.
As I said, there were buyers for the convert and the stock has recovered, so investors have a different view of Cray's future prospects than you do.
What's your view on SGI?
Sure, I agree, if by "recovered", you mean back to the -$6.00 (-60%) the stock is down this year. I guess that could be viewed as "recovered". Also, maybe those buyers have lots of reasons to buy, besides the Faith In Cray, that you seem to be suggesting. Even if that's true, it doesn't mean they (or you) are right, and it certainly doesn't mean it's a good thing, or even an OK thing, IMO, for Cray to need to burrow 60 million dollars, when the ROI for the company has consistantly been negative for years.
As for SGI, as far as I can tell, they seem to be doing better with their Itanium offerings, then Cray is doing with Opteron. Maybe SGI just has better server designers then Cray?
You have a very peculiar view on the use of debt by companies. Is it any company who issues debt or is it just companies that transgress your ideology?
It's any company that issues additional debt while appearing to already be on life support. It's not a peculiar view at all, it's one based on data, even if others are viewing that data through rose colored glasses, with their head in the sand, due to the data transgressing their own ideology. Appearing to take the position that this adding of additional debt, is some sort of thing that is no big deal for this company, because other companies have done it....... Now that's the real peculiar view, if you ask me.
