Great study posted on Stocktwits: The results, which were released yesterday, showed that most participants - 74 per cent - were interested in trying low-nicotine or nicotine-free cigarettes, while 80 per cent supported introducing a law to reduce the nicotine levels in cigarettes, so long as alternative nicotine sources were available.

You know why I think it's likely? Because BT has run its course. It's the spirit of our era... it's the fact that cigs are in decline, anyway... and that there are great cost-savings in terms of healthcare... and that 8/10 Americans want it (it's simply too transparent as compared to past corruptions... thanks to the internet in great part)... that tax dollars will come from e-cigs, anyway... and mjna... it's a perfect storm, IMO... even that Trump is president: he'd love to take credit for destroying BT and saving countless lives and outside of his fast-food crave, he don't drink/smoke... (quite sure he and Gottlieb were on the same page for a while or else SG wouldn't have been touting VLN mandate...)
The ghosts from past sins begin their redemption in October

It also remained unclear how Sharpless would approach tobacco regulation — a hotly contested area that had previously pitted Burr and some other Republicans against Gottlieb’s efforts to crack down on menthol and flavored tobacco products.
Senate Democrats, meanwhile, have criticized the FDA under Sharpless over its approach to e-cigarette regulation — scrutiny that’s intensified in recent weeks amid the spread of a mystery vaping illness that’s largely affected teens.

Spotlight on Science—Summer 2019
Spotlight on Science is a quarterly science and research digest from the FDA Center for Tobacco Products.
Note: The contents of publications discussed in this newsletter are the responsibility of their authors alone, and findings and conclusions are those of the authors and do not necessarily represent the views of FDA.
In This Issue…
On Aug. 15, 2019, FDA proposed new required health warnings with color images for cigarette packages and advertisements to promote greater public understanding of negative health consequences of smoking. The proposed warnings, which feature photo-realistic color images depicting some of the lesser-known, but serious health risks of cigarette smoking, stand to represent the most significant change to cigarette labels in 35 years.
In this issue of Spotlight on Science, read about the scientific research that went into this proposed rule, along with other news about CTP’s research initiatives and science-based regulatory policy.

JS: It would be interesting to see if the same results can be obtained with tobacco varieties used commercially in the tobacco industry to get nicotine-free cigarettes on the market. Furthermore, the application of this method to Nicotiana benthamiana, a strain used in industry for the production of proteins, might be useful to expand the production spectrum with this plant.
