Fewest Americans in history lighting up - CDC
Nov. 8, 2018 1:52 PM ET|By: Douglas W. House, SA News Editor
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that ~14% of American adults (~34.3M) smoked cigarettes in 2017, the lowest level in history and significantly below the 42.4% proportion in 1965.
It also reports that e-cigarette use declined slightly compared to 2016 in adults (more than compensated by the tremendous jump in teen use, however).
47M Americans still use some form of tobacco product. Cigarettes and e-cigs represent the most common combination.

Mexico Calls Ban On Recreational Cannabis Unconstitutional: Which Companies Stand To Benefit?
While Mexico began Día de Muertos celebrations, the country's Supreme Court offered a gift of epic proportions. The court ruled an absolute ban on the adult use of cannabis is unconstitutional.
This doesn’t mean cannabis users south of the border can start lighting up in the streets today. But it does mean lawmakers will now be charged with the responsibility of regulating the consumption of the plant. And make no mistake: it's a huge victory for legalization advocates and investors looking to get an early lead in the race to legalize cannabis in Mexico.

Coca-Cola to Take It Slow on Marijuana
10/31/2018 | 08:15am EDT
By Jennifer Maloney
Coca-Cola Co. won't use cannabis-derived ingredients in the U.S. or elsewhere until they are legal and there is a scientific consensus that they are safe for daily consumption, Chief Executive James Quincey said.
The soda giant is exploring cannabidiol, or CBD, a nonpsychoactive compound found in marijuana and hemp that treats pain but doesn't induce a high. CBD-infused oils, lotions and other products manufactured by small companies are widely available online in the U.S., but federal law on the ingredient is murky. That could change if the 2018 Farm Bill is passed, legalizing hemp-derived CBD, Mr. Quincey said Tuesday.
Meanwhile, marijuana-laced foods and beverages are expected to become legal in Canada next year.
"I think it's a way away before any large players in the consumer space get to it," Mr. Quincey said. "Being legal does not make it safe... Our consumers trust us to do the right thing."
Others are moving faster. Since last year, two big beer brewers -- Constellation Brands Inc. and Molson Coors Brewing Co. -- have announced development plans for cannabis-infused beverages in Canada, and Heineken's Lagunitas brand launched a marijuana-laced, hop-flavored sparkling water in California.
Coke has been pushing to broaden its portfolio of drinks as consumers shift to healthier options like sparkling water and kombucha. CBD is seen as a potential ingredient for the fast-growing category of "wellness" drinks.
"There's no way we're going to put something in unless there's a high degree of consumer acceptance," Mr. Quincey said. "We like a broad swath of consensus science and public opinion behind things before we're going to put them in our drinks."

No bones about it: Cannabis may be used to treat fractures
It's a 3 years old article tho
Tel Aviv University researcher finds non-psychotropic compound in marijuana can help heal bone fissures
Date:
July 16, 2015
Source:
American Friends of Tel Aviv University
Summary:
A new study explores another promising new medical application for marijuana. According to the research, the administration of the non-psychotropic component significantly helps heal bone fractures.
Cannabis -- marijuana, hashish -- was used as a go-to medical remedy by societies around the world for centuries. But the therapeutic use of marijuana was banned in most countries in the 1930s and '40s due to a growing awareness of the dangers of addiction. The significant medical benefits of marijuana in alleviating symptoms of such diseases as Parkinson's, cancer, and multiple sclerosis have only recently been reinvestigated.
A new study published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research by Tel Aviv University and Hebrew University researchers explores another promising new medical application for marijuana. According to the research, the administration of the non-psychotropic component cannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD) significantly helps heal bone fractures. The study, conducted on rats with mid-femoral fractures, found that CBD -- even when isolated from tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the major psychoactive component of cannabis -- markedly enhanced the healing process of the femora after just eight weeks.
The research was led jointly by Dr. Yankel Gabet of the Bone Research Laboratory at the Department of Anatomy and Anthropology at TAU's Sackler Faculty of Medicine and the late Prof. Itai Bab of Hebrew University's Bone Laboratory.
Undeniable clinical potential
The same team, in earlier research, discovered that cannabinoid receptors within our bodies stimulated bone formation and inhibited bone loss. This paves the way for the future use of cannabinoid drugs to combat osteoporosis and other bone-related diseases.
"The clinical potential of cannabinoid-related compounds is simply undeniable at this point," said Dr. Gabet. "While there is still a lot of work to be done to develop appropriate therapies, it is clear that it is possible to detach a clinical therapy objective from the psychoactivity of cannabis. CBD, the principal agent in our study, is primarily anti-inflammatory and has no psychoactivity."
According to Dr. Gabet, our bodies are equipped with a cannabinoid system, which regulates both vital and non-vital systems. "We only respond to cannabis because we are built with intrinsic compounds and receptors that can also be activated by compounds in the cannabis plant," he said. The researchers found that the skeleton itself is regulated by cannabinoids. Even the addition of a non-psychogenic compound acting outside of the brain can affect the skeleton.
Separating the components out
"We found that CBD alone makes bones stronger during healing, enhancing the maturation of the collagenous matrix, which provides the basis for new mineralization of bone tissue," said Dr. Gabet. "After being treated with CBD, the healed bone will be harder to break in the future."
The researchers injected one group of rats with CBD alone and another with a combination of CBD and THC. After evaluating the administration of THC and CBD together in the rats, they found CBD alone provided the necessary therapeutic stimulus.
"We found CBD alone to be sufficiently effective in enhancing fracture healing," said Dr. Gabet. "Other studies have also shown CBD to be a safe agent, which leads us to believe we should continue this line of study in clinical trials to assess its usefulness in improving human fracture healing."

Hemp, Inc. Applauds California Governor for Passing Industrial Hemp Legislation
Today 6:00 AM ET (GlobeNewswire)Print
via NEWMEDIAWIRE - Hemp, Inc. (OTC PINK: HEMP) applauds California's commitment to agriculture, industrial hemp specifically, with the passing of SB 1409. The new bill, which will go into effect on January 1, 2019, removes the previous requirement that industrial hemp seed cultivators be certified on or before January 1, 2013, finally opening the door for new cultivators to enter the market. This will "unleash a dramatic expansion of hemp farming and hemp businesses" in the nation's largest state and as a global leader in the industrial hemp industry, with the largest multipurpose industrial hemp processing facility in the western hemisphere, Hemp, Inc. stands to gain an enormous amount of business opportunities in the Golden State.
"This Bill will finally allow farmers in California to partake in this lucrative industry on a broad scale and I applaud Governor Jerry Brown for taking the proactive steps necessary to facilitate the growth of California's industrial hemp industry," said Hemp, Inc. CEO, Bruce Perlowin. "The immense opportunity represented by the state's world-class economy combined with its ideal growing conditions is sure to convince many farmers to switch to hemp. Our new west-coast hemp processing facility in Medford, Oregon, stands to be an excellent resource for all of the new farmers entering the industry as laws continue to evolve. We are also continuing to scout new locations across the country to open additional hemp processing centers."
Hemp, Inc.'s hemp cultivation and processing company, Local Processing Center, Inc. (LPC) in Medford, Oregon recently began processing the first harvest which is more than 100,000 pounds of industrial hemp from the first of many farms they have contracted with in that area. According to executives, Hemp, Inc. is currently creating strategic partnerships with farmers across Oregon to provide them with services including drying, curing and storing industrial hemp. With California adding an industrial hemp pilot program to their California Department of Food and Agriculture registration system, Hemp, Inc. executives say that could only add to their bottom line. (More information on opportunities to partner with Hemp, Inc. to sell or buy hemp biomass can be found by contacting ir@hempinc.com.)
Representing the world's fifth largest economy, California stands poised to become a dominant force in the legal hemp industry, especially pending the 2018 Farm Bill, which contains an amendment to fully legalize hemp cultivation at the federal level. The amendment has broad bipartisan support and is expected to be passed when the committee reconvenes after the midterm elections on November 6, 2018.
Notably, there are now 40 states in the nation that have legalized hemp. Companies seeking to enter or further develop their footprint in the industrial hemp marketplace are aligning with Hemp, Inc. for the company's proven expertise and state-of-the-art hemp processing and manufacturing infrastructure in Spring Hope, North Carolina and operations in additional states. The company's 85,000 square foot industrial hemp processing and manufacturing facility has been operational since August, 2017.
Its 500-acre strategic growing partner, Veteran Village Kins Community, in Golden Valley, Arizona, is also designed to grow hemp and produce cannabidiol (CBD) products to benefit veterans as well as generate revenue for Hemp, Inc., the Veteran Village and individual veterans living in the community.
Hemp, Inc. is also helping to build the industrial hemp infrastructure that was basically non-existent in America. And five years later, it's still in its infancy as our nation, gradually, embraces industrial hemp as a new emerging multi-trillion dollar industrial agricultural green revolution. Hemp, Inc. has been building six hemp infrastructures, Divisions One through Six (the 6th Division just launched):
Division One - The Industrial Hemp Infrastructure
Division Two - The Hemp Extraction Infrastructure
Division Three - The Hemp Farming Infrastructure
Division Four - The Hemp Educational Infrastructure
Division Five - The Hemp Marketing Infrastructure
Division Six - Accessories, Products and Services
Division Six is the company's newest division to be formed which focuses on the sale of hemp accessories such as the sale of extractors, storage bags, containers, fertilizer, soil amendments, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, balers, greenhouses, and greenhouse equipment; the drying, trimming, curing, storing and brokering for other farmers; and ultimately anything else a hemp farmer may need to be successful.
Moreover, the hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD) market is expected to hit $591 million this year, and it may grow 40 times this size--to $22 billion by 2022, according to a new report by Brightfield Group.

British American Tobacco (NYSEMKT:BTI) said revenue from smoking alternatives will miss expectations this year, citing a flat market in Japan and a product recall in the U.S.

I think some people will still smoke cigarettes because they think it is cool or just by habit or they just like the taste tobacco, however they will smoke less and if they ever decide to Quit they would have no problem doing it with VLN...
Smoking will become a choice and not an addiction and that changes the equation completely.
But Hey what do I know? I am not a smoker and am not addicted to any substances atho from time to time I enjoy some 420 and daily drink wine and occasionally hard liquor.

We cannot let e-cigarettes become an on-ramp for teenage addiction
By Alex M. Azar and
Scott Gottlieb
October 11 at 8:05 AM
Alex M. Azar is the secretary of health and human services. Scott Gottlieb is the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration.
At the Department of Health and Human Services, we are deeply concerned about the risks that e-cigarettes pose for children, given how quickly teenage use of these products has accelerated. Using a small battery to heat a liquid that contains nicotine, e-cigarettes turn the liquid into an inhalable vapor. Since 2014, they have been the most popular nicotine product among American teenagers.
And e-cigarettes' popularity is accelerating: From 2017 to 2018, according to new preliminary data from the National Youth Tobacco Survey, the number of high-school-age children reporting use of e-cigarettes rose by more than 75 percent. Use among middle-schoolers also increased nearly 50 percent. That is an epidemic.
The surge in e-cigarette use by teenagers is alarming because nicotine is highly addictive and can harm brain development, which continues into young adulthood. Worse, kids who start on e-cigarettes are actually more likely than non-user peers to migrate to smoking tobacco, as shown by data in a 2018 report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine.
It is crucial that e-cigarettes do not become an on-ramp for children to become addicted to nicotine. But at the same time, we believe e-cigarettes can be an important off-ramp for adults who are addicted to combustible cigarettes. At HHS, we are intent on combating tobacco use, the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. And last year we placed nicotine at the center of a comprehensive plan for tobacco regulation.
Why target nicotine? After all, nicotine is not directly responsible for death and disease from smoking. Other chemical compounds in tobacco, and in the smoke created when tobacco burns, are the killers. But the addictive quality of nicotine is what keeps people coming back year after year. And nearly 90 percent of adult smokers started when they were teens.
The efforts at HHS to combat tobacco's lethality focus on two key goals: first, reducing the nicotine levels in combustible cigarettes to render them minimally or nonaddictive. Second, harnessing new forms of nicotine delivery, including medicinal products and e-cigarettes, to give adult smokers less harmful substitutes for cigarettes.
Yet products such as e-cigarettes need to be put through an appropriate regulatory process. Under the most likely path for marketing authorization, they must show that their marketing is appropriate for protecting the public health, taking into account their risks and benefits to the population as a whole.
Rising e-cigarette use by children makes the marketing of this product especially deserving of close attention.
To better understand how this marketing works, the Food and Drug Administration has taken a series of actions, including on Sept. 28 obtaining records from Juul Labs headquarters in San Francisco during an unannounced inspection. Juul devices function as nicotine-delivering e-cigarettes but are shaped like a USB flash drive. Juul now has more than a 70 percent share of the cartridge-based e-cigarette market in the United States. The use of Juul in schools, including classrooms and restrooms, has been widely reported by students and teachers.
All these concerns drove us to crack down on sales of e-cigarette products to minors. For several months, we have advanced a comprehensive Youth Tobacco Prevention Plan to thwart the marketing and sales of e-cigarettes to minors, including an extensive education campaign warning teens about the risks of these products.
But now we know that the steps we have taken thus far are not enough. We are considering limits on the marketing and features of e-cigarettes to reverse their appeal and availability to minors. We are also actively reconsidering our policy under which certain e-cigarettes — particularly the products with flavors that might appeal to children — can remain on the market without submitting a premarket application to the FDA until 2022. We have many enforcement activities underway, including investigating whether these products are being unlawfully marketed online.
E-cigarette manufacturers are on notice. They still have the opportunity to come forward with their own plans to stem e-cigarette use by children. We have started this process by inviting the five largest manufacturers to discuss these challenges with the FDA and to present their plans to confront this youth epidemic. The technology that might help adults end one addiction cannot pull a generation of kids into a new one.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/we-cannot-let-e-cigarettes-become-an-on-ramp-for-teenage-addiction/2018/10/11/55ce424e-ccc6-11e8-a360-85875bac0b1f_story.html?utm_term=.371ece4819f7
Au contraire!... but you know that already
esad Agree with you but I have enough shares (still some bought in around $1.20
So I can unload maybe 500 to 1000 just to get some cash and still have enough for the big bang later !
I am just nervous about this market specially after the midterm election
regardless the fundamentals of the company some people have bought or will buy this stock on margin (pending good news) and if there is a crash or a big correction xxii will go down and fuss create an opportunity to buy back into at much lower price. But what do I know, just doing what I feel confortable of doing with my money.
Giovanni
Merci for your in depth comments
and like someone you know very well said last week at the United nation....
"I didn't expect that reaction but that's ok" :)
Clear enough, I just wanted to see what other people here were thinking and if they were aware about this different technology, sorry I may have missed the debate about it..
Still I am puzzled why if we are the only company in the world with patents to lower nicotine level in cigarette and having the FDA clamoring they want to lower nicotine to a non addictive level in all cigarettes sold in the USA and after all the researches done.. why nothing is happening from either and all sides.....very frustrating..
now back to your comment
Thanks NQA
when Aurora Cannabis Increased their stake in Radient .
So interestingly Aurora, XXII and Radient are in the same bed?? but radient and XXII are competitors on a different technology to lower Nicotine in cigarettes!
Well as long as we know the stock is being manipulated, I am fine with it, I am long here but yea I am getting tired of waiting and it is frustrating....But eventually something is gonna happen and they will have to release it ...Meanwhile let them accumulate.....it's a good sign :)
