The more I read, it seems like the Equator BSP-15 could be turning into a standard among the big boys. It seems that it's possible that the BSP-15 is what the growing demand is for, among other things. It could be possible that we are working with this tech company, and whomever they work with could be a potential for us. Just thinking outloud.

Equator Technologies-Probably worth a re-read on the specifics:
Equator Technologies Demonstrates BSP™-15 Video Processing Capabilities at Broadband Plus 2002
Company Showcases OEM-Ready Technology at CableLabs® Prestigious CableNET® Pavilion
Campbell, Calif. (November 20, 2002) - Equator Technologies, Inc., a provider of high-performance, programmable and power-efficient system-on-a-chip (SoC) processors for video streaming and image processing applications, announced today that the company will demonstrate the video processing performance of its MAP Series of processors, in particular its BSP™-15 processor, at CableLabs' CableNET Pavilion at Broadband Plus 2002 in Anaheim, Calif. next month.
The company will demonstrate three distinct consumer technology applications that utilize its BSP chip family, including:
Microsoft® Windows Media 9 Series
Leading the way in adapting to the latest and most advanced compression algorithms, Equator's flagship BSP-15 processor is the first embedded processor to decode high-definition Windows Media 9 Series audio and video in real-time.
Video-centric devices utilizing low bit-rate codecs like Windows Media 9 Series can enable a number of new consumer applications, including streaming high-quality video content without being constrained by "last mile" infrastructure, and allowing more content to be delivered per channel (versus using MPEG-2 with the comparable bandwidth). Powered by the BSP processor, Equator's Tetra™ Platform enables video-centric device manufacturers to take advantage of advanced, low bit-rate decoders without sacrificing the price/performance or small footprint that is appropriate for their markets.
Equator Broadband VOD Reference Platform
The Equator Broadband VOD Reference Platform provides a hardware and software design reference for an IP-based Video-on-Demand set-top box. Based on Equator's BSP processor, this small form-factor, high-performance, programmable platform delivers an unbeatable set of features at a much lower price than systems built with fixed-function ASICs and ASSPs. The Equator VOD Platform is codec independent, with the ability to utilize MPEG-2, MPEG-4 and other proprietary, low bit-rate codecs.
The Equator Broadband VOD Reference Platform shortens the time to deployment by providing a complete hardware and software reference design for a low bit-rate VOD application with Internet access and EPG capabilities. The Equator Broadband VOD Reference Platform application breaks the one-megabit barrier for near-DVD quality video. It can achieve video quality comparable to MPEG-2 at a more than 75% reduction in bandwidth.
Embedded Home Videoconferencing
The Equator Home Video Conferencing Reference Design provides a complete hardware and software solution to integrate IP-based video-conferencing functionality into video-centric consumer devices. This reference design is based on Equator's BSP SoC processor, Tetra Hardware Platform and a new "personality" module built specifically for media and communications applications. The platform incorporates industry-leading IP-based video conferencing software to deliver the most powerful and flexible VLIW digital media processing technology in conjunction with best-of-breed video conferencing functionality that includes high-quality audio and echo cancellation, PBX capabilities and Quality of Service software.
Equator's Video Conferencing Reference Platform includes all the tools necessary for customers to evaluate, design, test, develop and integrate VC functionality into their video-centric consumer products, including STBs and PVRs. This optimized, programmable, end-to-end solution allows for a faster time-to-market, a more flexible implementation and an easier upgrade cycle than in-house developed solutions that utilize application-specific circuitry.
Equator is one of more than 50 companies selected to participate in the CableNET booth, located in Hall C of the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, Calif. Broadband Plus 2002 will take place December 4 - 6, 2002. For additional information on the event, please visit www.broadbandplus.org.

Microsoft aims for sweet spot
by Simon Croft
Microsoft will be making at least four significant technology demonstrations and product announcements today, as part of the launch of its Windows Media 9 audio and video delivery platform. Some of these took place during the keynote by Microsoft's Windows New Media Platforms Division Vice President Will Poole yesterday afternoon. This represents the international debut of Media 9 series technology to the broadcasting community, with the only prior showing hosted by Poole and Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates a week ago for the benefit of the motion picture industry in Hollywood.
"What we are doing is rolling out the first major end-to-end platform that we've had for our media technologies," Poole told the IBC Daily. "It represents three years of development and literally hundreds of millions of dollars of investment on our part to bring this platform out."
Microsoft's most high-profile demonstration during IBC sees sports and news content delivered via DVB to show buses on the move around Amsterdam. This is being conducted in conjunction with Tandberg Television and NTL. It follows an announcement just before IBC of an agreement between Tandberg Television and Microsoft whereby Tandberg is developing a dedicated realtime hardware-based encoding platform for Windows Media 9 Series. The two companies are said to be collaborating at a number of levels, including engineering and sales and marketing.
"We're very pleased to work in partnership with Tandberg," Poole confirmed. "It very much validates our view that the quality we've been working so hard to achieve over the past three years is actually meeting the standards of the broadcast industry. Specifically, Tandberg has said that our quality is exceeding the quality of MPEG-2 and MPEG-4. This is why we are saying that this has a tremendous value to the broadcast industry."
Microsoft's second surprise is the unveiling of high definition set-top technology based on single-chip architecture from Equator Technologies. The device on demonstration is firmware, rather than silicon, but it squashes the idea that Microsoft is talking up technologies it can't deliver.
Poole revealed: "You'll see announcements about releases from Equator, Texas Instruments, Broadcom and a number of others who will be offering single-chip decoding capabilities for video and audio in standard and hi def formats."
Poole said that in order to get silicon developers on board, Microsoft had needed to produce rigid specifications. Otherwise, chip manufacturers would not be able to recover development costs. It was "quite exciting" to have a working representation of products that would give set-top box manufacturers "super-inexpensive parts that sell for under $30 but give very high-quality video". Pace will be announcing a Windows Media 9-capable set-top box, which could be available to European consumers in weeks, rather than months.
But how good a result can consumers really expect from streaming video? "Obviously, the exhibitor has to make a decision, trading off quality and bit-rate," Poole observed. "With MPEG-2 or even MPEG-4, it is very hard to achieve that combination of quality and bit-rate that works over today's architecture. The last mile is fairly constrained, particularly in the US, less so in Europe."
In his keynote, Poole addressed 'quality of bit' (QOB), Microsoft's term for the need to get maximum quality from minimum bit-rates. "We look at that metric as what drives us to improve the codec towards a sweet spot that will give us, for example, at low-end DSL rates VHS quality, at mid-range DSL to get to near-DVD quality and, of course, when we get to satellite and DVB, you can get into hi def quality. The Windows Media 9 is actually able to hit those sweet spots that no other technology can get," he claimed. At maximum quality, Windows Media 9 is said to be capable of a picture resolution six times greater than DVD.

I think Oz is correct. Chat should be open in it's separate window, and IHub in it's own window. Don't hit the back button, just leave chat open and go to IHub independently in it's own window, as Oz has suggested. Good luck.

DMBs are also sold as Odyssey 200 & Odyssey 300 by e.digital

Wi-Fi-Shipments going up due to 802.11 demand:
( BW)(NY-ALLIED-BUSINESS) Wi-Fi IC Shipments Set To Top Expectations, According To ABI Study
Business & Technology Editors
OYSTER BAY, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 18, 2002--Driven by strong growth in the SOHO/retail market segment and broader global demand for 802.11x based wireless local area network (WLAN) solutions, shipments of chipsets are set to hit 23 to 25 million units this year, up from 7.9 million in 2001.
This is considerably above initial expectations for 14-15 million chipsets, and it points towards an acceleration in catalysts driving Wi-Fi adoption.
Taking into account rapid price declines of ICs, a growing confidence in new addressable markets and the immense interest in 802.11 technology Allied Business Intelligence's (ABI) new forecasts indicate that between 2002 and 2007 Wi-Fi chipset shipments are set to grow at a CAGR of 43%. Hence by 2007 shipments will reach 147.5 million chipsets, with revenues of $1.13 billion.
"There is a very elastic relationship between pricing and demand in the wireless LAN market, and every step down in prices brings the industry closer to unlocking new opportunities and applications," said John Chang, ABI Senior Analyst. "There is fierce competitive innovation in this market and it is critical for market participants to commit significant resources if they hope to compete successfully against the likes of Intersil and Intel, whose Calexico dual-band 802.11a/b offering will ship in 2003."
Findings from the ABI report titled "Wi-Fi Integrated Circuits: Industry Dynamics, Market Segmentation and Vendor Analysis for 802.11a/b/g" include:
-- By 2004 revenue from dual-band chipsets will exceed those from 802.11g and 802.11b.
-- The market entry of Taiwanese IC players in 2003 will further pressure 802.11b pricing.
-- The 802.11b market will have legs beyond 2004, but chipsets will increasingly be targeted for embedded implementations particularly in very battery-constrained devices such as PDAs and eventually mobile handsets.
-- 802.11g will have a significant impact in the SOHO/retail market and will comprise 18% of IC shipments in 2003, much of it backend-loaded.
-- The pattern of continuous price declines will quickly extend beyond the existing 802.11b chip market into 802.11g and dual-band segments.
-- CMOS and Zero-IF architectures will be important in enabling lower cost architectures, including a potential single-chip solution.
The key focus of the ABI study is to provide extensive market segmentation based on protocol, application market, geographic region and client form factors. This is complemented by vendor market share analyses for 2001 and 2002 by functional blocks (baseband, MAC, RF and power amplifier). The study also examines current and future IC offerings from both large semiconductor companies as well as start-up developers, with insights into their competitive positioning. This is complemented by a thorough identification and analysis of current industry dynamics and IC trends.
Allied Business Intelligence Inc is an Oyster Bay, NY-based technology research think tank founded in 1990. The initiative also will be beneficial for OS vendors because it will enable them to define common software APIs (Application Program Interfaces) and device drivers for different application processors, maximizing re-use and commonality in the OS port. Software developers will have a common and standard set of hardware interfaces to write applications that will significantly reduce development resources, allowing them to deliver products to market faster and improve market potential as a result of having applications that run on multiple platforms.
"By creating this new, open standard for interfaces to application processors and peripheral components supported by multiple vendors, we are simplifying both software and hardware development. It is a significant step towards our shared vision of a truly interoperable mobile multimedia world where the end user can access any service on any network using any kind of mobile terminal," said Aldo Romano, Corporate VP and General Manager of ST's Telecommunications, Peripherals and Automotive groups.
Both companies have plans for their own application processors in compliance with the new standard to be available in 2003. ST will soon launch its family of multimedia application processors complying with the OMAPI Standard. TI will support a range of OMAPI Standard compliant products, building on the current available OMAP processors. Moving ahead, the companies intend to expand the initiative to encompass additional levels of commonality and standardization including applications, multimedia and OS support, security features, and the alignment of software development tool chains.

OT-Philips New Sound Technology Locates 'Sweet Spot' for PC Audio Enthusiasts
December 2002 (Newstream) -- Royal Philips Electronics (AEX: PHI, NYSE: PHG) today announced a new technology that dramatically improves the sound quality of personal computers and other consumer electronics products. The technology is particularly effective in restoring sound quality to files using compression methods such as MP3, the most common online digital file format.
Called Sound Agent 2TM, the new Philips technology uses sophisticated algorithms to analyze sound along two dimensions, the source of the sound and where the sound is going to be played, resulting in high quality total sound optimization. Consumers set listening preferences via an intuitive graphical software interface that allows easy control of a wide range of sophisticated sound variables.
Sound Agent 2TM automatically finds the listening "sweet spot" of individual entertainment variables in use at a given time - for equipment (PC's, media servers, etc.) file types (MP3, WAV, DVDs, games, etc.) and environments (headphones or speaker systems) - enabling gamers, MP3 digital audio enthusiasts, or even casual listeners to enjoy optimized sound quality.
"Both media-savvy users and the popularity of entertainment applications are creating demand for high quality PC sound," said Tim Bajarin, market analyst at Creative Strategies. "With this new technology, Philips has been able to deliver high fidelity at an acceptable cost and within the PC form factor."
"The benchmark for PC sound evaluation has always been based on the output of the card itself, not the management and integration of all sound variables for optimized listening," said Hans van't Riet, Line of Business Manager, Multimedia Sound Solutions. "Our research reminded us that consumers are not very interested in technical specifications but rather the best listening experience possible. Anyone can hear the difference that Sound Agent 2 makes. It represents a completely unique and more meaningful way to think about PC sound."
Key features of Sound Agent 2:
Intelligent Media ProcessingTM (IMP): The Philips software foundation that constantly monitors the type of sound input and renders it according to output. IMP is a software architecture that can be utilized in a wide range of consumer devices.
Compelling 3D virtualization: Technology developed by QSound Labs for Sound Agent 2 creates the absolute best 3D audio experience for any headphone, stereo speaker or multi-channel speaker system. State-of-the-art algorithms eliminate the need for the cross-talk cancellation found in many solutions from other manufacturers. The end result is an ultra-wide "sweet spot" for strong positional perception regardless of head movement and positioning, allowing listeners to enjoy a true 3D surround experience with 2, 4, or multiple speakers in any environment.
5.1 Channel Surround from any source material: Stereo sources from CDs, MP3s, and PC games are transformed into 6 full channels of true surround sound using QSound's exclusive QMSS5.1TM technology. While other solutions simply mirror the front stereo speakers in the rear channels, QMSS analyzes each incoming signal and automatically approximates the location of where each individual sound should be in a surround environment. The result is a full 360-degree wrap-around sound experience from all sound sources.
QSizzleTM and QRumbleTM to supercharge MP3s: Uniquely provides an energy boost to MP3 files that helps restore compressed digital music to its original fidelity by compensating for lost harmonic detail. Truly adaptive, this technology feature continuously monitors input signals and makes adjustments automatically.
Virtual 5.1 Channel Surround: From 5.1 channel sources such as multi-channel software DVD players, QSurroundTM virtualizes each channel for dynamic reproduction through stereo speakers. In addition, QSurround enhances playback through multi-channel 5.1 speakers for a seamless and more immersive surround experience.
Sound Agent 2 technology is available to PC users bundled with two new retail sound cards from Philips Electronics, the Dynamic Edge 4.1TM with quad surround, and the Sonic Edge 5.1TM with 5.1 channel surround.
