SYNA: Outperform , Target 42 from CSFB
Strong 2Q05 Results; Raising Estimates and TP to $42 (from $40); Reiterate Outperform
Synaptics reported 2Q05 earnings on January 20, 2005, of $0.33 per share versus $0.14 in the year-ago quarter and the consensus estimate of $0.29 on revenue growth of 65% y/y to $56.5 million.
Operating margin of 27.8% exceeded the year-ago quarter's margin of 16.7% primarily as a result of a 530 bp improvement in gross margin and operating expense leverage from higher sales. Gross margin was favorably impacted by a mix shift to a higher percentage of portable music players and from efficiency gains.
Non-PC revenue accounted for 43% of total revenue and increased nearly 350% to $24 million from $5.5 million in the year-ago quarter, driven primarily by explosive growth of the popular iPod music player, and to a lesser extent by strong contributions from relatively new music players such as the Zen Micro.
By far the greatest surprise in the press release was the sequentially flat revenue estimate management gave for the March quarter, typically a seasonally down quarter. Strength in the portable music player market continues to exceed expectations. Three new MP3 player design wins should help sustain the strong growth rates.
On the call management highlighted progress on the mobile handset front, with promising news anticipated within 3-6 months. The terms "optimistic" and "increasingly confident" were used to describe the potential for Synaptics's technology on mobile phones. The addition of MP3 player functionality on phones is driving interest.
As a result of the quarter's outperformance and increased revenue expectations we are increasing our FY05 EPS estimate to $1.10 from $0.83 and our FY06 estimate to $1.30 from $1.04. We are also increasing our price target to $42 from $40, which is based on a HOLT discounted cash flow analysis. We reiterate our Outperform rating.
CLWT huge volume today and began to rally in the closing hour. Stock was still moving with some good sized blocks in the post market. Last trading around 6.70. Looks like it will gap up again tomorrow. One of several tsunami related stocks. Chinese water treatment and supply company. fyi

Well they got another federal contract today and PECS is again, up a bit in the post market. Likely morning gap up. Don't know how long it will last, but back in for another round.

NERX been a volatile mover today. First up very strong, now down very strong.
For starters, just pick up this month's copy of National Geographic. It is well documented the Chinese use thousands of convicts, including political prisoners for forced labor. The Indian and Pakistani slavery mills are also well documented.
You got something against making an effort to buy local? When you buy local more of your money stays in your own community, schools, churches, charities, local government.. as opposed to sending it through an electronic pipeline to Shanghai or even
Bentonville, Arkansas.
Yeah... we need to put all the folks in our prisons on 16 hour shifts 7 days a week manufacturing goods and providing services. Then we'd be competitive with China and Pakistan. Of course in India and Pakistanand Bangladesh they use a lot of child slave labor as well.. I suppose we could dip into the grade schools and match them stitch for stitch, cheap gadget for cheap gadget.
It is really hard to "buy American" any more. Notice how Wal Mart quietly dropped that bogus marketing ploy a few years ago. The only solution is to buy LOCAL. Takes a little effort but it can be done. Then you know where many of your consumer goods were made, even talk to the local owner. Not such a radical idea, but the multinationals don't like it.
Cheers
Doc
Would appreciate suggestions on stochastics settings to watch for the divergences mentioned here. I use a lot of indicators but this particular use of stochs to seek out bearish or bullish divergences for the big picture is a new one on me. Thanks.
Picked up some TBIO on the news they will continue supplying GERN with some high specialized chemicals. Am thinking it will move up once we get this correction completed.
MANU nice little pop after hours on earnings.

CREE up again in pre-market: ThinkEquity (CREE)--ThinkEquity upgrades stock after Nichia struck a blow against Taiwanese competitors in court that will likely result in less pressure on LED ASP's in the near-to-medium term. Specifically, Nichia won a preliminary attachment order in Taiwan against EPISTAR Corp, freezing assets due to patent infringement issues regarding LED products. Cree and Nichia have cross licensed patents, but have seen ASP pressure mounting from Taiwanese manufacturers. ThinkEquity believes this represents the first shot across the bow of LED manufacturers that have not licensed IP from Nichia, which could result in reduced LED pricing pressure for Cree going forward. With this court decision, it is likely that Cree will benefit from more stable ASP's as Taiwanese vendors are forced to license IP from Nichia. Firm raises price tgt to $25 from $18.
CREE postmarket move up could be related to this:
Today Nichia Corporation announced that a Taiwanese court had granted a preliminary attachment order, which was executed by Nichia on September 22, 2003, to freeze the bank accounts of EPISTAR Corporation. Nichia is suing EPISTAR for the infringement of Nichia’s Taiwan patent No. 160,722 by EPISTAR’s blue LED product, and the recent court order is a part of that legal action. The executed court order freezes some of the EPISTAR’s bank accounts to preserve funds for award of potential damages to Nichia.
Nichia has developed an extensive portfolio of patents and other intellectual properties in various countries, resulting from advanced and vigorous R&D efforts. Even though the current legal action is directed at one of the products of EPISTAR, the largest GaN-based LED producers in Taiwan, Nichia intends to take additional necessary legal actions against other EPISTAR products and/or other products of other companies, to vigorously protect Nichia’s intellectual properties and its licensing partners’ legal rights. Nichia expressed a willingness to enforce its intellectual properties against any other infringement in any country in the world.

Something major going on with CREE. Stock is trading at 20.75 in the after hours market. I see no news, but for that kind of price and volume action post market, it must be major. Busted right up through resistance at 20 like it was hardly there...

Gee whiz. Did Options Jerry really write that? Unbelievably stupid article. Oh I'll bet he gets lots of business for his website.
Strangest thing.. did you ever notice the large number of "expert" traders who seem to do something else for a living? Like run websites and charge people for their insight?
