From the CTIA Code Scan Team White Paper on indirect 2d barcode advantages on page 17:
Benefits of an Indirect Encoding Model The Indirect encoding model offers several benefits over the Direct model, which are useful forconsumers, Code Publishers and Campaign Managers. The following describes the main benefits of anIndirect encoding model:
• Interoperability - Indirect encoding allows multiple Campaign Managers to reach carriersubscribers through a single handset code reader application. The incorporation of a CentralClearing House and Central Registry enables Campaign Managers to use this system in aninterchangeable, equal way, while maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of theircompany’s 2D bar code campaigns.
• Consistency of Service and Market Reach -One key to adoption of 2D barcodes in the UnitedStates is consistency of service experience and reliability for customers, independent of carrieror camera phone make & model and choice of barcode symbology. Indirect encoding supportedby a Central Clearing House function acting on behalf of carriers enables users to scan anddecode different supported symbologies using a single code reader application on the handset. This fulfills a key objective of Code Publishers by ensuring a consistent experience to thebroadest base of users and allows access to campaign content or service, regardless of theirchoice of Campaign Managers, carriers or symbologies.
• Advertising Uses & Size - The Indirect model encodes an alpha-numeric code (‘Identifier’) intothe barcode, rather than a full address of the intended content or service (i.e. WAP URL). ThisIdentifier is used by the Campaign Manager as an index to resolve the full URL, which will bereturned to the handset 2D barcode reader application for action. As a result of encoding asmaller amount of data, indirect barcodes are typically much smaller in size. A small bar codewill be essential in usage situations with space constraints, such as on consumer goodspackaging involving imprints on small objects.
• Security and Trust - The Indirect model ensures the security of content and a trusted user experience. This contrasts the Direct encoding of barcodes, which typically involves unmanaged routing of the user’s client to the code publisher’s web portal, hence exposing the user to potential inappropriate content, fraud, phishing and other attacks. With the Indirect model, system entities work collaboratively to ensure a trusted and managed user experience. Stakeholders are much better equipped to institute content guidelines for 2D bar code distributions and they can mitigate the adverse impact of misleading or inappropriate contenton end users by removing the associated Identifiers from circulation.
• Consumer Analytics Reporting - The Indirect model enables system entities (Clearing House andCampaign Managers) to leverage carrier capabilities to report user demographics (on a opt-inand anonymous basis). These demographics are of value to Code Publishers for purposes ofadvertising accountability and campaign planning. As the 2D Barcode market and methods ofuser-controlled disclosure of application attributes (e.g. geo-location and subscription profile.

In other words, to say that direct is better than indirect 2d barcode in terms of security and reliability is either 1)not informed; or 2)has an agenda. Either way, might want to take up that argument with the CTIA scan team. Good luck with that.
Righto.
Oh....! I forgot.

A rehash in connection with that of jcg0176's post.
Be sure to wait until commercials are done. I went through 2 commercials til I got to the Reuters news part.
YJ, did you email to NEOM about this typo? Nevermind....just saw your response to D.
Knock it off, Luckyrabbit. It's in the papers. Read it, please. NEOM and Scanbuy case is over. NEOM won. NEOM always had the upper hand in this. And now, since this is over, everybody (businesses) stands the chance to hugely benefit from this 2D phenomenom to ramp up.
Gretsch, no. Market will be open. Veterans Day is a Federal holiday though. It will be closed on Thanksgiving Day (Nov 26)as note for those who are not sure.

Books, newspapers and magazines move rapidly to new media platforms, some integrating printing, others bypassing it. Hearst's December Esquire incorporate Augmented Reality codes that link readers to interactive three-dimensional sites online when the cover, with its barcode, is presented to a laptop webcam.
Conde Naste has begun selling single copies of GQ magazine optimized for iPhones for $2.99.
The current issue of MIT's Technology Review magazine featues a section sponsored by IBM with 2D barcodes on many of the pages that, when scanned on cellphone cameras or webcams, bring readers direct to websites. Visits can be tracked advertisers, who receive metrics on the ad impacts.

Smart Phones, Mobile Software, Coupons and Grocery Lists
I can hear it now! Readers complaining that I should already know about this category of mobile applications, but I don't so I apologize in advance.
I want to be able to go to a grocery store (food store) and take out my iPhone, photograph the bar code label (UPC code) and have my GPS location uploaded to a website that will instantly provide me with all the discounts, coupons and rebates available for that product (UPC code) in that specific store location (GPS coordinate).
I want to take advantage of any savings that are available. I should not have to clip coupons from newspapers, file them and browse through different websites. I want the best price for the products on my shopping list for today only. Hummm, let me think about that. Perhaps if complementary products were also on sale that could prove useful. OK, let's add that feature and make it so it can be active or inactive in set-up.
It would also be useful to know how many of my products could be purchased for less, a mile down the road. Perhaps the total costs for my groceries at store A is $79.00, but 1 mile down the road those same products would only cost $63.00. I would like to know that. I may travel 1 mile to save $16.00. The radius of the search for savings could be configured in my mobile application. I want all stores within 1, 2, 3 or 10 miles.
Perhaps I could even save the UPC bar code scans from previous visits to the grocery store. These would, over time, make up my personal food lists. With a personal list of products and their associated UPC codes saved, I could quickly make a grocery list and request best prices from multiple stores within a designated area.
Once I have a list of all the best prices on my personal food list and their locations, I could request a best route to drive, plus a list of groceries I should buy at each store to maximize savings. I may have 4 stores within my designated search area. Each store has some food items that would maximize my savings. If I travel to each store, one at a time, I could save $34.00 on my list. If I went to only 2 stores, I could save $28.45.
OK, that is all good, but travel, time and fuel have a cost. I would like to know how much time it would take to drive to each store one at a time. Let me enter a time and fuel cost. That should be factored into the overall savings.
The result should be a very quick and simple mobile application that maximizes my savings in the most efficient manner possible. I would also need to show my electronic coupons to the cashier and manage the rebate process. Hummm...save that for another blog article.
OK readers what is the application called and where do I download it?

More Scanbuy stuff...
Forget the retro renaissance of 3-D, 2-D is the latest buzzword in mobile circles. After becoming popular in Asia and Europe, 2D barcodes - which pack more data than the traditional linear version - are finally catching on here as a way to make offline ads interactive and mobile coupons more convenient.
Resembling tiny crossword puzzles or geometric artworks, 2D codes allow cell phone users to point at outdoor and print ads featuring the distinctive black-and-white squares to get local information, connect to a Web page or to enter a contest.
A leader in the space is New York-based Scanbuy, whose technology includes a mobile application that converts a camera phone into a code reader as well as a Web platform that lets marketers create and track their 2D codes. A somewhat experimental Scanbuy campaign on behalf of Discovery Communications and Citysearch that placed 2D codes in bus shelters, kiosks and other spots around San Francisco to promote local attractions won the "Best Integration with Mobile" category for MediaPost's 2009 Digital Out-of-Home Media Awards last spring.
Now marketers are jumping in in earnest. Sprint is using Scanbuy's EZcodes in direct mail campaigns, including a sweepstakes to win a Kindle 2; Volkswagen has added them to brochures promoting the 2010 GTI; and BMO Capital Markets featured one in a recent ad in The Wall Street Journal.
Separately, national chains such as JCPenney and Starbucks are testing 2D barcodes to deliver mobile coupons - allowing users to get through checkout faster by reading coupons directly from phones. And without wearing funny glasses.

Inmar, the nation`s leading promotions transaction settlement provider, today announced that its collaboration with mobile platform provider, Augme Mobile - a division of Modavox, Inc., now enables consumer-directed rebate charitypromotions.
Natural chicken producer Springer Mountain Farms currently uses this capability for its "Scan to Save a Life" program promoting The National Breast Cancer Foundation. This program features a 2D barcode on each product package that can be scanned as a rebate proof of purchase. Instructions for SMS entries are also
included. Consumers can then choose to have a rebate deposited in an electronic consumer account, such as Obopay or PayPal, or they can donate the funds directly to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

And back in July....
DuPont Packaging & Industrial Polymers (P&IP), Graphic Packaging International, Inc., Scanbuy, Inc. and Augme Mobile announced that they have entered into a joint Marketing Agreement to promote technologies that enable packaging to interact with consumers. The packaging-based marketing alliance enables innovation leaders Graphic Packaging and DuPont P&IP to leverage leading edge mobile applications of its technology partners, specifically Scanbuy's mobile 2D barcode platform and Augme Mobile's AD LIFE(TM) mobile marketing and CRM platform.
Mobile two-dimensional barcode ("2D barcode" or "2D Code") technology is growing in popularity as a means for consumers to access mobile content without having to type long URLs or search for information by SMS/text message keyword. By placing 2D barcodes on packaging, marketers can connect consumers through their mobile phones, to additional product information, coupon offers, or promotional messaging like recipe ideas. Graphic Packaging and DuPont P&IP have demonstrated the ability to commercially print 2D barcodes on a wide variety of rigid and flexible substrates.
"DuPont P&IP, along with our collaboration partners, are always looking for ways to bring leading edge packaging innovation to our customers. Mobile enabled interactive technology using 2D codes appears to be the most effective way for a consumer to quickly and easily interact with a package," said Carolann Haznedar, global business director, DuPont Ethylene Copolymers. "CPG companies from around the world are very interested in this technology and aligning support in the value chain will enable clarity and consistency in its use."

Ha ha...whoops! there it goes.
Bittermoon, it takes time to get these ecosystems and infrastructure in place. It's gonna be licensing, licensing, licensing for Neomedia. Neustar is looking good so far based on their conference call transcript and expect a good year in 2010. In time all these things will coalesce and I'm certainly looking forward to 2010.
Right, Cloud3. We're already on the up trend track overall. Regardless, I see that many newbies need lots of handholding who don't really know the significance behind the PTO ruling, Neustar 4-year licensing deal (means money folks down the road), other licensing deals, etc. etc..to realize the importance of all this. Results of these deals and others coming down the road as I suspect already will reveal themselves in due time with the earliest financial reporting in early 2010.
Did anybody read the Nuestar conference transcript?
