German car makers are getting hyped about hydrogen
Audi and Mercedes-Benz are the latest to jump on the H2 train.
Meanwhile, here in the US, General Motors has joined up with the US Army to test how suitable fuel cell EVs are for military applications. If you live in California, you can even buy a fuel cell EV, although residents of other states might want to wait a while until publicly accessible H2 filling stations become a reality. California has even increased the subsidy available for a fuel cell EV—up to $6,500 on top of any federal tax incentive—in order to hasten the uptake of this technology.
Not everyone is convinced H2 fuel cells are the answer, though. Elon Musk is well known to be dismissive of the technology, and lots of other people have pointed out that it's less efficient to use electricity to produce H2 and store it than it is to just use electricity to charge a battery. But the much quicker refueling times—similar to a hydrocarbon-fueled vehicle—compared to battery EVs mean we should expect to see more fuel cell announcements in the future.

GM, Army to test Chevrolet Colorado fuel cell
GM and Army engineers will modify a Chevrolet Colorado to evaluate the fuel cell's performance under strenuous use over a 12-month test period.
The electric drive motor develops strong low-end torque, the vehicle can generate electricity in the field, and the water emitted from the tailpipe can be used in dry climates. The Army also believes that fuel cell vehicles and their near-silent operation are also ideal for many uses, notably combat situations.
“The potential capabilities hydrogen fuel cell vehicles can bring to the warfighter are extraordinary, and our engineers and scientists are excited about the opportunity to exercise the limits of this demonstrator,” TARDEC Director Paul Rogers said in the GM statement.
The fuel cell powertrain that will power the Colorado is a version of the one that GM developed for the Chevrolet Equinox fuel cell test fleet that comprised Project Driveway. From 2007-13, 119 Chevrolet Equinox fuel cell vehicles racked up more than 3 million miles of on-road testing by more than 5,000 consumers.
Toyota says its fuel-cell vehicle gaining traction in California
Toyota sells the Mirai at eight California dealerships, and will expand to nearly 40 dealerships there and at a handful of stores in the U.S. Northeast by the end of 2016.
Sales will expand next year to five U.S. states - New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
GM to provide fuel cell vehicle to Army for testing
Mark Reuss, GM’s global product chief, told investors last month the company had signed “a multi-year contract to build and demonstrate a fuel cell reconnaissance vehicle” for the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center.
Reuss said the vehicle “will be based on our current fuel cell development program, on our current stack. It will show the unique advantages our proven fuel cell technology can offer in an all-terrain tactical application.”
The Army is interested in fuel cell vehicles for a number of reasons. First, they are quieter and smoother than vehicles with internal combustion engines. Second, they can be used to generate electricity in the field; and because gaseous fuel weighs less than gasoline or diesel, fuel cell vehicles would be easier to fuel. It will show the unique advantages our proven fuel cell technology can offer in an all-terrain tactical application. Because fuel cell vehicles have electric drivetrains, they offer high torque at low speeds, ideal for many types of military vehicles.”
GM has said that it could produce a fuel cell vehicle for consumers by 2020, using the next-generation technology it is developing now with Honda. In 2013, GM and Honda signed an agreement to co-develop fuel cell powertrains. The fuel cell to be tested by the Army is a current GM design and does not feature any Honda technology.
Earlier this year, Charlie Freese, head of global fuel cell engineering at GM, told Automotive News that Honda and GM engineers, working side by side, have made good progress reducing the size and cost of the fuel cell stacks, which are coated with expensive precious metals.
“It’s coming down very, very quickly in terms of precious metal loading. The workhorse fuel cell stacks have 29 grams of platinum. The next-gen stack is down in the 10 gram range. The next generation is running in our laboratory now. Weight is down by almost one half. Size is also down by almost one half. And cost has come down in orders of magnitude,” he said.
Audi Is Ready To Produce Fuel Cell Vehicles
“Audi has been working on fuel cell concepts for more than ten years now,”
“Audi is poised to go into volume production with fuel cells as soon as the market and public infrastructure justify this move,” the company said this week.
Details haven’t been confirmed on Audi’s upcoming FCV. But it’s likely that the company will base a production version on the A7 Sportback h-tron quattro, a concept FCV shown a year ago in Los Angeles.
Audi noted that it is working with other brands in the Volkswagen AG group, which includes Audi, to develop new materials for a more efficient fuel cell stack. “These will make the fuel cell significantly lighter, smaller, more robust and more powerful.

Nissan Motor Co. CEO Carlos Ghosn has been a strong proponent of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) for some time, but the company has kept its options open. In January 2013 it co-announced a collaborative agreement with Ford and Daimler to develop shared FCV tech, having its own R&D work ongoing besides, and it looks like those plans are underway.

Lexus Fuel Cell Car Likely To Be Based on New LS Luxury Sedan
Lexus could launch a fuel-cell LS by 2020, in time for the Tokyo Olympics, according to a Nikkei report that came out earlier this week.
We are still early on into the adoption of Hydrogen. Demand needs to be built. What will make the whole industry move is the auto industry, They will build the demand. It is inevitable because the governments are putting higher emission demands on automakers each year. There is no choice. Even cheap gas will not hold it back. The limitations of the pure battery EV has prevented it from becoming the replacement to fossil fuel. Toyota and Honda realized that a long time ago. When the general awareness is realized that there is a replacement for fossil fuel the whole sector will rise. Think how many gallons of gas are used now??? These links of car manufacturers coming onboard are a sign of what is happening. The more cars they sell, the more stations will pop up. They will be in tandem. The republican party are big on Hydrogen. Look for even faster adoption. Oil company have a ton of money, when they see a demand they will convert stations. One pump per station at first. They can do it seamlessly by just scaling back the cost of oil exploration. Look for more subsidies to come from government's. More like Japan. Honda is working on a portable hydrogen unit that will let people make their own hydrogen. This can speed up adoption even faster. But the writing is on the wall. When will all this start to happen, probably early 2017. I would think a share price of 10-15 dollars by 2020 is possible. This is one to just hold on long term. But look for the auto industry to be a catalyst for the whole industry to take off.

Hydrogen Fuel Cells Are Becoming Too Big to Ignore
More advantages of hydrogen over batteries
For vehicles or materials handling, the shorter refill times are an advantage over batteries, but in energy storage, hydrogen holds a massive advantage. Batteries are great at storing a limited amount of energy for minutes or hours, but they aren't good for storage on a massive level. With enough storage tanks, a hydrogen-producing station could produce clean hydrogen and store it for weeks or months at a time. This dynamic gives energy storage options to maximize value creation and potentially eliminate the intermittency challenge with renewable energy. The fuel cell market becoming a multibillion-dollar market means costs will likely start coming down, and eventually, energy storage using hydrogen could be an economical reality.
Hydrogen has a big upside
Electric vehicles have been all the rage for a couple of years now, but when we look out decades, I think there's far greater upside for fuel cells. At just $2.2 billion in the U.S., it's still a small market, but it's growing rapidly, and with so many potential uses, fuel cells will likely lower costs and become more attractive in the multitrillion-dollar energy market.
