The largest independent physician's network in Erie has been purchased by UPMC UPMC Latest from The Business Journals People & Awards: Executive levelTuesday hearing focuses on Highmark, UPMCHighmark, WPAHS formal deal expected soon Follow this company , less than a year after the Pittsburgh-based health provider became affiliated with Hamot Medical Center and its parent foundation.
Erie Physicians Network, a multi-specialty practice in Erie with 33 physicians that has served 35,000 patients over the past three years, will become Erie Physicians Network-UPMC beginning Nov. 1.
Terms of the deal, which will make Erie Physicians Network doctors and other staff employees of UPMC, were not disclosed.
All of the practice, which began in 1997, will remain open.
The acquisition will strengthen UPMC's growing capabilities in Erie, north of Pittsburgh along Lake Erie. The 375-bed Hamot Medical Center, one of Erie's two big hospitals, became UPMC-Hamot earlier this year.
"This new partnership supports UPMC's commitment to uphold innovation, provide superior-quality patient care, and maintain a vision of growth for Erie and western Pennsylvania," Dr. Marshall Webster, executive vice president of UPMC and president of the Physician Services Division, said in a prepared statement.
Dr. Philip Cacchione, president of the Erie Physicians Network, told the Pittsburgh Business Times on Wednesday morning that it was an easy decision for the company to affiliate with UPMC due to the changing nature of the medical industry and the fact that EPN's doctors have been affiliated with the two major Erie hospitals, Hamot and Saint Vincent Health System. Under the terms of the UPMC acquisition, EPN and its physicians will be severing ties with Saint Vincent Health System.

– “Participating in global mental health research is an enormous opportunity, a means to accelerate advances in mental health care for the diverse U.S. population, as well as an extension of our vision of a world where mental illnesses are prevented and cured,” said Thomas R. Insel, M.D., director of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the NIH institute heading this effort. According to the paper’s authors, the disorders targeted by the Grand Challenges in Global Mental Health—for example, schizophrenia, depression, epilepsy, dementia, and alcohol dependence—collectively account for more years of life lost to poor health, disability, or early death than either cardiovascular disease or cancer.”

On 2 February 2011, the Government published No health without mental health,
which sets out the strategy for improving the mental health and well-being of the
nation. Central to this strategy is the Government’s commitment that the NHS will
complete nationwide roll-out of Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT)
services between 2011/12 and 2014/15.
The Talking Therapies: A four-year plan of action was published in conjunction with
the mental health strategy and outlines how the 2010 Spending Review commitment
to expand access to psychological therapies will be achieved. Specifically, the
Department of Health financial settlement in the Spending Review 2010 rises in cash
terms and includes around £400 million for psychological therapies over the period to
April 2015. The NHS has already been notified of PCT allocations for 2011-12 which
included additional funding for increasing access to talking therapies. Funding will
continue to increase to enable PCTs to realise this commitments and will amount to
an additional £400 million over the spending review period on top of the annual
allocation of £173m from the first phase of the programme which will continue.
