Hilarious job numbers from the Bureau of Labor
By Jack Hellner
As the media campaign so vigorously for Democrats and cheer how great the Biden-Harris policies have been, suddenly, the Department of Labor comes out with an unemployment report that blows away expectations.
Biden and Harris were out bragging as a significant number of people still canāt pay their bills without running up new debt or going delinquent on the debt they already had.
Supposedly, 254,000 jobs were created in September. Isnāt that amazing, that this report came out one month before the election?
Of course, the media gave the headline number and never got into the details.
Here is one important detail: government jobs showed a gain of 785,000 because of the second biggest seasonal adjustment on record. (It is easy to manipulate numbers when you have āseasonal adjustments.ā) This would mean that private-sector employment declined 531,000 with seasonal adjustments. I would say that is not too much to brag about. Somehow, the voters donāt get to see that number, but they know that the economy has sucked the past four years because they canāt pay their bills.
In September, the number of government workers as tracked by the Household Survey soared by 785K, from 21.421 million to 22.216 million, both seasonally adjusted (source: Table A8 from the jobs report). This was the biggest monthly surge in government workers on record (excluding the outlier print in June 2020 which was a reversal of the record plunge from the Covid collapse months before).
And, from the Department of Labor itself: Private-sector employment, not seasonally adjusted, went down 458,000. What would the voters think if they saw the factual number instead of the seasonally adjusted number?
And remember: recently, the Department of Labor said it overestimated jobs by 881,000 in a year. It is sad when so many trust government numbers when they are so consistently wrong.
Of course, there is no penalty for government employees screwing up so consistently. They keep their jobs and get raises every year, along with Cadillac health care plans and pensions. And the public gets screwed.
Whenever Trump or anyone else suggests that government jobs can be reduced, the media and other Democrats have a cow. They need their votes.

Looks like you, cap and Bull are the early risers.
Today is the day that the bean plants and the rest of the 'maters are yanked. The beans still have lotsa beans but we're about beaned out. We've been freezing them, eating them and begging folks to take them. Today is the last day for the wife's friends, several are coming over, to go out back and pick their own. Later on it's bye bye beans. I won't put in as many in next year.
Good plan Bull. It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it!!
Even 60K is probably 55K more than Harris and Biden could draw!
Mornin' Bull. He sure doesn't sound very gentlemanly to me.
Sure sounds like a "Gentleman"!

What Happens to All the Unnecessary DEI Workers?
By Robert Weissberg
There is, however, some potential good news. The displaced worker problem is an old one, and government programs exist to retrain them. In 2016 Hillary Clinton suggested that former coal miners be taught coding to soften the pain of banning fossil fuels. Perhaps the federal government should adopt a similar program for surplus DEI functionaries. Far better than writing guidelines for how first responders must not ignore those drowning due to their race, religion, ethnicity, or sexual preferences.
Recall the adage to be careful of what you wish forā¦ you might just get it. This sage advice is currently being demonstrated in the decline of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) crusade. Scarcely a week passes without major corporations and universities ending their DEI programs but unfortunately, these cutbacks hardly mean the end of DEI; it may even get worse. The reality is that the thousands of newly unemployed functionaries plus countless would-be DEI commissars are not about to disappear.
Particularly worrying that DEI functionaries are disproportionately middle-class African Americans, and unlike politically voiceless Kentucky coal miners now unemployed due to the push for green energy, they will not quietly go out to pasture on government doles.
Now for the āyou may get what you wish forā bad news: the federal government is likely to pick up the slack, and the armies of now unemployed DEI functionaries and future racial preference experts will undoubtedly find a home in the vast federal bureaucracy. In a sense, this recalls the Great Depression, when the federal government served as the employer of last resort. Now, however, rather than build the next Hoover dam, these new hires will push Washington to ensure that that the federal workforce ālooks like Americaā while prioritizing diversity, equity and inclusion.
The federal government has already gone on a DEI hiring spree. On the first day of his administration (January 20th, 2021), Biden issued an Executive Order, to ā...Advance Racial Equity and Support for Underserved Communities Through the Federal Government.ā
The Executive Order hardly minces words. It began with, āEqual opportunity is the bedrock of American democracy, and our diversity is one of our countryās greatest strengths. But for too many, the American Dream remains out of reach.ā Nor is this effort just minor tinkering -- "Our Nation deserves an ambitious whole-of-government equity agenda that matches the scale of the opportunities and challenges that we face.ā It continues, āIt is therefore the policy of my Administration that the Federal Government should pursue a comprehensive approach to advancing equity for all, including people of color and others who have been historically underserved, marginalized, and adversely affected by persistent poverty and inequality.ā Moreover, this will be transformation on a grand scale to include, āBlack, Latino, and Indigenous and Native American persons, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and other persons of color; members of religious minorities; lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) persons; persons with disabilities; persons who live in rural areas; and persons otherwise adversely affected by persistent poverty or inequality.ā
The Biden/Harris administration then quickly issued a second Executive Order reaffirming the initial command: āAs the Nationās largest employer, the Federal Government must be a model for diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility, where all employees are treated with dignity and respect. Accordingly, the Federal Government must strengthen its ability to recruit, hire, develop, promote, and retain our Nationās talent and remove barriers to equal opportunity.ā
This DEI mandate differs fundamentally from what occurs in private industry and higher education. Harley Davidson motorcycles may try to market its product to gays but if homophobic bikers decide to buy Hondas instead, the society-wide damage is minimal -- fewer Harleys will be sold and. critically, Harley Davidson cannot punish those who refuse to buy their product.
But the federal government can legally impose its policies. You can buy whatever motorcycle you wish, but if you are going to build a highway involving federal funds and refuse to hire the bureaucratically determined employees from āunder-served populations,ā you will be denied the contract. But if you do get the contract but still reject government hiring mandates or misrepresent your new hires, you can be fined and, in extreme cases, imprisoned. Federal government DEI thus differs fundamentally from what occurs in the private sector and higher education, and it is hard to exaggerate the damage that can be inflicted by government officials embracing the DEI agenda.
Consider, for example, the role of DEI in the federal government rescue efforts following the recent Helene catastrophe. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) website lists a set of three goals for its emergency management mission. First, "instill equity as a foundation of emergency management," the second is ā"Lead Whole of Community in Climate Resilience" and the third goal is "Promote & Sustain a Ready FEMA & Prepared Nation. The DEI mission is explicit: āFEMA must draw upon its staffās diversity and range of experiences to consistently inform programming, policy, and decision-making." The FEMA plan continued, āThrough investment in diversity and inclusion efforts -- including Employee Resource Groups and multicultural training FEMA can increase its employeesā involvement and participation in cultivating a culture of inclusion." According to FEMAās equity logic, those who suffered the most in the past, for example, black and sexual minorities, now need the greatest help when disaster strikes.
DEI will not save a single life, rebuild homes or restore ravaged communities. The opposite is true when people are hired according to their identities, not competence. Add the non-productive extra paperwork to ensure that queers are welcomed employees, and the additional training to guarantee that rural Asian Americans stranded on their rooftops are promptly rescued.
This FEMA diversity mission statement is but one of thousands and the cost, measured in dollars and government effectiveness, must be immense, and matters will only deteriorate as diversity efforts escalate. Nor will Donald Trumpās election end it, though he will surely try. Firing any federal employee is near impossible, especially a protected minority. And senior civil servants can easily shield incompetents, especially to advance the social justice agenda. Just look at how the Secret Service is slow walking the attempted assassination of the ex-president. Washington bureaucrats are skilled at manipulating job descriptions and lowering qualifications to advance an ideology. Trumpās effort to ban such preference will be ignored with āWeāre working on it.ā
How can the DEI industry be dismantled? Or will we just shift the woke bodies from the private sector to the government? That many in this industry are well-educated African Americans only compounds the obstacles. In principle, this is no different from the job obsolescence endemic in the American economy (ācreative destructionā). Remember the armies of typists, file clerks and telephone operators? Entire industries such as warehousing, auto manufacturing, and even the U.S. Postal Service have drastically reduced their workforce. Todayās DEI industry faces a similar crisis.
There is, however, some potential good news. The displaced worker problem is an old one, and government programs exist to retrain them. In 2016 Hillary Clinton suggested that former coal miners be taught coding to soften the pain of banning fossil fuels. North Carolina Asks Zelensky For $100 Billion In U.S. Funding
RALEIGH, NC ā With civilians working hard to rescue their neighbors along the path of devastation left behind by Hurricane Helene and FEMA revealing a lack of available money, the state of North Carolina asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for $100 Billion in U.S. funding.
Though President Biden approved North Carolina's request for federal disaster relief, uncertainty about the timetable for receiving funds amid various obstacles and bureaucratic red tape, the state's officials decided to go directly to the man with more U.S. taxpayer dollars than anyone else.
"He's the man with the money," said North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper. "I have a lot of faith in the Biden administration to provide us with help, but we simply can't afford to wait around while the federal government drags its feet. If we want the level of U.S. funding we need to help with relief efforts, we need to go where all the money is. I knew I had to get Zelensky on the phone right away."
A source within the Ukrainian government disclosed that it may be difficult to come up with the amount of funding North Carolina needs. "We would be happy to help," the source said. "We just need to figure out where all the money went. There's been so much of it over the last few years that it's hard to keep track of it. North Carolina can be sure that we will get back to them as soon as we can."
At publishing time, North Carolina had sent an urgent plea to the Taliban asking if it had any spare U.S. military helicopters it could have to help rescue hurricane victims.

Port workers reach tentative agreement to end strike
The International Longshoremenās Association (ILA) union and the U.S. Maritime Alliance (USMX), an association of companies that operate East and Gulf Coast ports, reached a tentative agreement Thursday to end a two-day strike.
The ILA announced Thursday night that the USMX agreed to boost pay for port workers and that union members would return to work immediately.

Energy Absurdity: The Stark Reality of [Un]Green Wind Power
David Blackmon
Oct 03, 2024
Just a reminder that the building of the foundations for even smallish onshore wind turbines is a massive operation requiring stunning amounts of supplies and raw resources.
The video below shows the process for building the foundation for a small turbine whose tower will rise to only about 300'. Many onshore towers currently being built all over the world will rise to 750' or more and consume proportionally more resources.
Video at link
Once set in place, you will see that these massive foundations are covered up below ground, out of the public's sight. THEY WILL NEVER BE REMOVED. They will remain there into perpetuity, barely 3 feet below the surface, thus permanently condemning the surface lands for many future uses.
Not a single US state today has a comprehensive set of regulations in place on the wind industry requiring the remediation of these sites. Not one.
The base of a wind turbine, or foundation, can weigh between 600 and 1,000 tons.
Wind turbine blades are built using balsa wood which is obtained by deforestation of the Amazon rainforest.
Wind turbines contain concrete, carbon fiber, steel, cast iron, copper, aluminum, boron, chromium, cobalt, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, and rare earth elements. Some of these various energy minerals are mined using child labor in Africa and slave labor in China.
They have an advertised operational lifespan of up to 25 years. It is estimated that globally, around 43 million tons of wind turbine blade waste could pile up by 2050 - the equivalent of 215,000 locomotives.
This is not "green" energy in any way, shape or form. It is a global fraud from beginning to end.
Have a great day!

Judge Tanya Chutkan, of the US District Court for Washington DC, has unsealed the latest filing by special counsel Jack Smith. The document relates to Smithās efforts to prosecute former President Donald Trump over his actions related to January 6, 2020. Coming just a month out from the presidential election, her decision to publicly release the details on Wednesday, October 2, was panned by Trump as āelection interference.ā
After the Supreme Court ruled that presidents enjoy a level of immunity for official actions, Smith was forced to go back to the drawing board with his prosecution. In September, he refiled a 165-page indictment. Judge Chutkan dismissed claims that the timeline would be prejudicial, saying, āThe electoral process and the timing of the election ā¦ is not relevant here. ā¦ This court is not concerned with the electoral schedule.ā
The key takeaway from the filing, Smith wrote, was that āAt its core, the defendantās scheme was a private one. He extensively used private actors and his campaign infrastructure to attempt to overturn the election results and operated in a private capacity as a candidate for office.ā
Trump took to social media to make his feelings known. His ire was not directed at the judge, however. He instead excoriated Jack Smith and the Department of Justice:
āFOR 60 DAYS PRIOR TO AN ELECTION, THE DEPARTMENT OF INJUSTICE IS SUPPOSED TO DO ABSOLUTELY NOTHING THAT WOULD TAINT OR INTERFERE WITH A CASE. THEY DISOBEYED THEIR OWN RULE IN FAVOR OF COMPLETE AND TOTAL ELECTION INTERFERENCE. I DID NOTHING WRONG, THEY DID! THE CASE IS A SCAM, JUST LIKE ALL OF THE OTHERS, INCLUDING THE DOCUMENTS CASE, WHICH WAS DISMISSED!ā
It seems the former president is keen to derail the prosecution in the court of public opinion before it ever makes it to trial.
A Political Predicament
Two key issues remain for Jack Smith. First, he must prove that then-President Donald Trump was operating in a purely personal capacity in every action he took. Any statements, calls, or processes that Trump engaged in that can reasonably be deemed within the course of his duty as the commander-in-chief are ā as the Supreme Court ruled ā to be viewed through the lens of immunity.
New banner Viewpoint with eyeThere is a potential precedent here that could be seen as, at best, troublesome and, at worst, deleterious to any future president discharging his or her duties. Consider the following scenario: Suppose that, at some time in the future, there is a reasonable suspicion that all was not above board with a presidential election, and the current POTUS wants to challenge the result or at least investigate the possibility. That president will have to consider that their actions will be held up to legal scrutiny and could face criminal charges. Does this shadow make election integrity more or less secure?
The second issue is that Smithās efforts could be null and void by November 6 (or by January 20 at the latest). The decision to prosecute is always a political one. Should Trump regain office, it is almost certain that he will order the Department of Justice to drop the case entirely. A cascading effect here is that should Trump win the White House and Democrats take the House, Smithās groundwork will likely be used as the basis for a third impeachment effort. If he has, as the 45th president suggests, rushed his filing in order to weaken the Republican nomineeās chances of re-election, any weakness in his case will be exposed and could cause lasting reputational damage to the department he represents.
But how strong or weak is his new filing?
A PT Barnum Gambit?
Constitutional scholar Jonathan Turley detailed the Hail Mary efforts of the special counsel:
āHe is trying to thread the needle in this filing to get around the Supreme Court immunity decision. Notably, Smith removed evidence from the new indictment but kept the same claims, including conduct that seems to fall within protected areas.ā
So, does this mean that the new filing is weaker sauce than the original? āWhat Smith was not willing to do is actually reduce the underlying claims. The new case is to indictments what shrinkflation is to products ā same package just less content,ā Turley wrote. Or perhaps, as PT Barnum once noted, āAdvertising is to a genuine article what manure is to land, ā it largely increases the product.ā
Jury Continues Deliberations In Trump Hush Money TrialNEW YORK, NEW YORK - MAY 30: Former U.S. President Donald Trump walks out of the courtroom at the conclusion of his hush money trial at Manhattan Criminal Court on May 30, 2024 in New York City. A jury has found former U.S. President Donald Trump guilty on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in the first of his criminal cases to go to trial. Sentencing is set for July 11th.
āSmith knows that he has a motivated and supportive judge and wants to simply prove the same basic claims on less evidence,ā Turley concluded.
However, even if Mr. Smith were given the benefit of the doubt regarding Trumpās claims that the timing of the filing is meant to interfere with the upcoming election, another horological Sword of Damocles hangs over the special counselās head.
Whoās On First?
When the Supreme Court ruled, in Trump v. United States, that presidents enjoy a level of immunity while exercising their official duties, Justice Clarence Thomas felt it necessary to make a specific point regarding who can actually be appointed as a special counsel. He declared in a concurring opinion:
āI write separately to highlight another way in which this prosecution may violate our constitutional structure. In this case, the Attorney General purported to appoint a private citizen as Special Counsel to prosecute a former President on behalf of the United States.
āIf there is no law establishing the office that the Special Counsel occupies, then he cannot proceed with this prosecution. A private citizen cannot criminally prosecute anyone, let alone a former President.ā
This writing was prompted by the decision of Federal Judge Aileen Cannon, who, in July this year, dismissed Smithās other case against Donald Trump regarding the mishandling of classified documents. While that verdict explicitly restricted itself to the Florida charges, Trump lawyers will likely use the ruling to push for a Supreme Court hearing. Liberty Nation News Legal Affairs Editor Scott D. Cosenza explained at the time:
āThe Appointments Clause, found in Article 2, Section 2 of the Constitution, gives Congress great authority over who is appointed to exercise powers granted to the Executive branch. Here, to prosecute federal charges, one must be an āofficer of the United States,ā and those must be appointed with consent from the US Senate, as US Attorney positions and the Attorney General are, for instance. If not, then the appointment must be supported by some other law passed by Congress.ā
The Supreme Court will be back in session this coming Monday, October 7, and there is little doubt that a challenge to Smithās position is waiting in the wings.
Impact Baked-In?
Donald Trump claims that both the prosecution itself and the timing of the filings (and unsealing) are motivated to do him damage just weeks before the November 5 election. While it is true that the DOJ does not usually take action on politically sensitive cases within two months of an election, it is a common practice rather than a rule. However, if the past is prologue, Mr. Trump may not have too much to worry about on this side of Election Day.
Each time he has been taken to court or ruled against in court, his poll numbers have not suffered. In fact, thereās a good case to be made that each successive action by state and federal prosecutors has actually strengthened his position, presumably because a significant portion of the public believes the charges against him are politically motivated.
Kamala Harris has tried to paint herself as the underdog in this election ā despite being the sitting vice president. This position was already a hard sell, but with the media again focusing on the numerous charges against the former president, it becomes an almost unbelievable assertion. That the charges were coming back was never in doubt ā that they might not actually make a difference come November could prove to be a decisive factor in the public perception battle.

Let's hear it for the Wyoming girls
By Silvio Canto, Jr.
Let's cheer for girls who understand that boys and girls are different biologically. In other words, men are bigger, stronger and should not comp rebounding basketballs against girls.
This is the good news from Wyoming:
The University of Wyomingās girlsā volleyball team has forfeited an upcoming game rather than be forced to play against a biological boy on the other team, making them the third team to do so in recent weeks.
āAfter a lengthy discussion, the University of Wyoming will not play its scheduled conference match against San JosĆ© State University in the UniWyo Sports Complex on Saturday, Oct. 5,ā the Wyoming team announced Tuesday afternoon in a statement. āPer Mountain West Conference policy, the Conference will record the match as a forfeit and a loss for Wyoming. The Cowgirls will host Fresno State on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 6:30 p.m. in the UniWyo Sports Complex.ā
A forfeit is normally a loss. In this case, it is a huge victory for women's sports. These girls stood up for women's rights and protecting current and future girls fighting for a trophy or a scholarship.
Join me in saluting these girls. The governor and legislature of Wyoming should recognize their courage. Why not a huge parade down the state capital? Heck I might drive to Wyoming just to join in that celebration.

Ridiculous āfact checkā of a true statement during CBS debate
By Post Editorial Board Published Oct. 1, 2024, 11:04 p.m. ET
JD Vance was accurately describing the migrant crisis fueled by Kamala Harris and Joe Biden when CBS moderator Margaret Brennan decided to insert herself with a āfact check.ā
āJust to clarify for our viewers, Springfield, Ohio does have a large number of Haitian migrants who have legal status,ā she said smugly.
Vance was rightly annoyed by the interruption and said, āThe rules were that you guys werenāt going to fact check, and since youāre fact checking me, I think itās important to say whatās actually going on.ā
He then proceeded to truthfully, forcefully explain what ālegal statusā means:
āSo thereās an application called the CBP One app, where you can go on as an illegal migrant, apply for asylum or apply for parole, and be granted legal status at the wave of a Kamala Harris open border wand.ā
Vance has done more than 60 interviews since becoming former President Donald Trump's running mate, versus a mere handful by Walz.
Best and worst VP debate moments: āSlick JD versus cornball Timā
Liberal media pans Tim Walzās VP debate performance ā ABC News anchor compares it to Bidenās disastrous showdown against Trump
At which point CBS decided to CUT OFF HIS MIC.
This was the most shameful moment in a long history of shameful moments by moderators biased against Republicans. They āfact checkedā the truth, then stopped the politician from responding.
It was made all the more partisan by the face that when Gov. Tim Walz told the howler that āillegal border crossings are down compared to when Donald Trump left office,ā which is not even close to true, no one let out of a peep. Some āfactsā are too good to check.
Not to be left out, The New York Times posted that Vanceās comments āneeded context.ā
āThere is no way for migrants abroad to apply for asylum through an app,ā The Times claimed. āThe Biden administration, however, established an app that allows more than 1,000 migrants a day to schedule appointments at a port of entry where they can be granted parole into the country through the CBP One app. The migrants can then apply for asylum once they are in the United States in immigration proceedings.ā
Ah. So if someone made an appointment through the app, showed up at the border or an airport, they are going to apply for asylum, right? Is there any chance they would be rejected and sent home? No? Then yes, they are applying for asylum through an app.
The Times is relying on such an idiotic parsing of phrase that thereās only one word to describe it: A lie.
What Vance was explaining is absolutely, verifiably correct. There is no Congressional authorization for the Harris-Biden administration to simply allow 1,000 people a day, 365,000 a year, to just walk across the border.
Moreover, asylum law requires that seekers apply in the first safe country they enter. The White House is ignoring that rule. Venezuelans can walk through a half-dozen nations where they could apply for asylum, and they still let them apply here. They arenāt required to remain in Mexico while their applications are processed, as former President Trump required.
Not to mention that someone can only be granted asylum for political, religious or racial persecution, not only because they want better economic opportunity. The process is being abused. And if the Democrats have their way, everyone who is here on an āasylumā claim will never be deported, whether their court claim succeeds or not.
So yes, the Haitians of Springfield have ālegal status.ā But thatās only because Kamala Harris and Joe Biden are ignoring the law.
This was a nationally televised example of why the eliteās obsession with āmisinformationā and āfact checkingā is a load of horse manure. They donāt want to tell the truth. The Democrats want to shut off the microphone for anyone who asks the āwrongā questions or says the āwrongā thing. They want to purge X and Facebook and TikTok of any opinions that make them look bad.
JD Vance was telling the truth about immigration. And thatās why they had to shut him up.

WOW!!!
Good morning Al. Here's another review of the debate:
And the winner is... Tim Walz staggered by cool JD Vance, admits āIām a knuckleheadā during genial VP debate
By Steven Nelson Published Oct. 1, 2024 Updated Oct. 1, 2024, 11:39 p.m. ET
Minnesota Democratic Gov. Tim Walz stunned watchers of Tuesday nightās vice presidential debate as he nervously fidgeted, frowned and even called himself a āknuckleheadā ā while his Republican counterpart, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, gave a steady and lawyerly presentation and was widely seen as the victor.
The largely good-natured forum, hosted by CBS News, featured the two candidates agreeing with each other repeatedly and expressing warm personal sentiments ā avoiding the blistering personal attacks that were part of both presidential debates earlier this year.
Walz, 60, who has honed a folksy demeanor on the campaign trail, was noticeably nervous and misspoke repeatedly as he wrung his hands, took frantic notes, and his eyes darted around the CBS studio.
Answering the very first question of the night, Walz expressed concern about āthe expansion of Israel and its proxiesā ā instead of Iran and its proxies ā when asked if he would support a pre-emptive Israeli strike targeting Iranās nuclear weapon program.
The Minnesotan ultimately didnāt answer the question, with Vance, 40, saying he would leave the final decision up to the Israelis and support them regardless.
Walz still seemed nervous an hour later, declaring āIāve become friends with school shootersā ā when he seemed to mean victims ā during an answer about gun control.
Vance responded amicably and expressed his regret that the governorās son had witnessed a shooting at a Minnesota community center.
The Democrat stumbled again, in what will be the most replayed moment of the debate, when he was asked about fresh reporting that he lied about having been in Hong Kong during the Tiananmen Square massacre in the spring of 1989.
āLook, I will be the first to tell you I have poured my heart into my community,ā Walz said in a rambling initial response. āIāve tried to do the best I can, but Iāve not been perfect, and Iām a knucklehead at times, but itās always been about that those same people elected me to Congress for 12 years.ā
Co-moderator Margaret Brennan pressed: āGovernor, just to follow up on that, the question was, can you explain the discrepancy? ā
Walz, visibly shocked and dismayed by the blunt follow-up, grudgingly claimed that āI got there that summer and misspoke on this.ā
Neither Vance nor the moderators raised Walzās alleged embellishment of his military exploits or use of fertility treatments to help his wife conceive children, despite Republicans focusing on both in recent weeks.
Walz at one point praised Donald Trumpās running mate for giving viewers āthe conversation they want to hearā about the future of the country, in an apparent reference to the civility of the debate.
Vance, who spoke about his motherās struggle with opioid addiction while urging greater US-Mexico border security and about his grandmother sometimes turning the heat off in the winter to save money, stood the most to gain from showing amiability.
In one of his best-received answers, Vance recalled that someone āvery dear to meā had an abortion in the past and confessed to him āshe felt like if she hadnāt had that abortion, that it would have destroyed her life because she was in an abusive relationship.ā
Vance, who had been asked about Republicansā abortion policies, used the story to pivot to the GOP ticketās proposals to make fertility treatments free and improve home affordability.
When pressed by co-moderator Norah OāDonnell on his appearing to distance himself from a proposed federal abortion ban after 15 weeks of pregnancy, Vance cited his own stateās pro-abortion rights outcome in a 2023 referendum.
āWe had a referendum in 2023 and the people of Ohio voted overwhelmingly, by the way, against my position,ā Vance said.
āAnd I think that what I learned from that, Norah, is that weāve got to do a better job at winning back peopleās trust. So many young women would love to have families. So many young women also see an unplanned pregnancy as something thatās going to destroy their livelihood, destroy their education, destroy their relationships, and we have got to earn peopleās trust back. And thatās why Donald Trump and I are committed to pursuing pro-family policies, making child care more accessible, making fertility treatments more accessible, because weāve got to do a better job at that and thatās what real leadership is.ā
The Republican entered the debate with a more negative appraisal by the public ā with a 10.3% deficit in his own favorability ratings, according to the RealClearPolitics average of recent polls, versus Walzās plus-2.5% favorability rating.
It appeared to pay off handsomely, with venerable pollster Frank Luntz finding that in a 14-person focus group of undecided voters across seven battleground states, 12 concluded that Vance won the debate.
Other commentators gave a similar assessment of the two men.
āDems are fortunate presidential debates tend to matter a lot more than VP debates,ā wrote Dave Wasserman, senior editor and elections analyst at the nonpartisan Cook Political Report.
āWalz looks rusty and nervous. Maybe he should have done some press interviews to better prepare,ā tweeted Washington Post columnist Josh Rogin ā noting the relative sparsity of Walzās media engagements.
ā15 minutes in and its clear that Walz not doing interviews was a big mistake: Heās nervous and JD is comfortable because heās been in doing an adversarial interview a day since he was picked,ā wrote āBreaking Pointsā cohost Saagar Enjeti.
Veteran political commentator Chris Cillizza, formerly of CNN and MSNBC, wrote toward the end: āVance is winning the debate. He is clearly the best debater of the 4 candidates running for president or vice president. His abortion answer/pivot was masterful. Walz has been fine ā but uneven. His answer on the lie that he was in China during Tiananmen Square was AWFUL.ā
Vance has done more than 60 interviews since becoming former President Donald Trumpās running mate, versus a mere handful by Walz.
The Republican kept an even keel in the rare moments the debate got contentious, at one point speaking even as his microphone was cut off when he challenged a moderatorās fact-check claim.
When Brennan said that thousands of Haitian migrants awaiting asylum rulings while living in Springfield, Ohio, āhave legal statusā ā Vance was ready with his counter-argument that they arrived under an illegal expansion of āparoleā by the Biden-Harris administration.
āSince youāre fact checking me, I think itās important to say whatās actually going on,ā Vance protested. āSo thereās an application called the CBP One app where you can go on as an illegal migrant, apply for asylum or apply for parole and be granted legal status at the wave of a Kamala Harris open border wand.ā
Republicans have argued that the program exceeds the administrationās legal authority and that parole should not be granted categorically.
Vance, meanwhile, praised some of the Harris-Walz campaignās policies, including on expanding housing construction and affordability, but repeatedly pressed on why Harris has not already made good on her policy pledges while in office.
āSome of those ideas actually think are halfway decent, and some of them I disagree with,ā Vance said.
āThe most important thing here is Kamala Harris is not running as a newcomer to politics.
She is the sitting vice president, if she wants to enact all of these policies to make housing more affordable, I invite her to use the office that the American people already gave her, not sit around and campaign and do nothing.ā

Tim Walz Isnāt Helping Kamala Harris, Heās Hurting Her
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz talked a huge game during his first appearance with Vice President Kamala Harris, his Democrat running mate. āI canāt wait to debate the guy,ā he said of Sen. J.D. Vance, his Republican opponent from Ohio. āThat is, if heās willing to get off the couch and show up.ā
Walzās tune has changed so dramatically now that itās unrecognizable. āTim Walz is telling people heās just as nervous about facing JD Vance as he was the Sunday afternoon in August when he warned Kamala Harris in his running mate interview that he was a bad debater,ā said CNNās Edward-Isaac Dovere. A dozen Walz operatives report the governor is absolutely terrified of āletting Harris down.ā His constant mockery of Vance for rising from poverty in Appalachia to graduating from Yale Law School is reframed as a āglimpse into his anxietyā about going up against Vanceās superior intellect.
Other media outlets are also trying to lower expectations for Walz, reminding anyone who will listen that vice presidential debates rarely move the needle.
But Walz was picked precisely because he was supposed to move the needle with an important demographic Democrats are struggling to win over: men. And he was going to do it with a form of masculinity that the media claimed was so effective that it was terrifying for Republicans.
āTim Walzās Masculinity Is Terrifying to Republicans,ā Bloomberg wrote in August. The New York Times said Walz exemplifies āa kind of healthy masculine confidence,ā citing his ease speaking about his difficulties impregnating his wife, his desire to be the faculty advisor of a gay club for children, and his decision to put tampons in boysā restrooms. (It should perhaps be noted that Walz either lied about or was deeply confused about the circumstances of his childrenās conceptions.)
Axios said Walz ā and Harrisā husband Doug Emhoff ā offered a new vision of masculinity, one that emphasizes ātendernessā over ātoughness.ā (Emhoff, for what itās worth, caused the end of his first marriage by reportedly impregnating his childrenās nanny. It is unclear if the child survived or not.) Both men were praised by Axios for āembracing their second-fiddle roles.ā
In The Atlantic, Mark Leibovich wrote with confusion about why Walz ā who he described as a āconvincing beta figureā ā isnāt being used as a media surrogate more. āItās a bit of a mystery why Walz has largely stopped doing national media, especially given how effective he was over the summer. The campaign seems to have trapped him in the same hyper-protective Bubble Wrap it has placed around Harris,ā Leibovich wondered, apparently witnessing a different campaign than the rest of the country.
Itās a real mystery, Mark Leibovich. In his one national interview with sympathetic CNN activist Dana Bash, he said the reason why he lied about his military service was because he struggled with grammar.
The lies are a real problem. Walz overstated the rank at which he retired from the National Guard, and people under his command soon told the story of how he quit rather than face an overseas deployment. That was also different than the story heād repeatedly told while in Congress. More recently we learned he lied about how many times heād been to China ā he had claimed during a congressional hearing that heād been there 30 times while it was closer to a still-high 15 occasions. And he even lied about whether or not he was in Hong Kong during the Tiananmen Square massacre.
The media keep asserting without evidence that Harris made a good pick with Walz. Of J.D. Vance, who takes on media propagandists all day every day, the media say he was a bad pick. Itās not Walzās sole fault that his boss lady is struggling, but heās certainly not helping Harris with what he was supposed to. National and state-based polls vary but Harris has routinely run five to ten points behind Biden at this point in the 2020 race.
Walz was supposed to help with white men who were leaving the Democrat Party in droves. Instead, the problem is growing. Trump is doing better than ever with Latino voters. Heās getting record high support among black men. He has more working class support than ever.
Rather than pick Gov. Josh Shapiro, a competent governor from the must-win state of Pennsylvania, Harris chose Walz, who is a middling governor from a state so blue that it even voted Democrat in 1984. Walzās alleged midwestern appeal isnāt yielding the desired results in Michigan, where Rep. Elissa Slotkin was caught telling donors that Harris is currently losing. It didnāt have to be Shapiro. Gov. Roy Cooper of North Carolina or Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona would have been also been an asset and come from states Harris would like to win.
The only argument for picking Walz is that Harris is so insecure about her own weaknesses that she didnāt want to pick someone smarter or more competent than she is.
āWalz is a buffoon. Iām sorry. This guy, heās the only schoolteacher in America who brags that none of his students can get into an Ivy League school. Heās had one consequential press interaction with our Dana Bash, who asked him about the fabrications in his own resume. And his answer was essentially, āMe no understand words good.ā I mean, he is a buffoon,ā said Scott Jennings. āThey donāt let him talk to the press for a reason.ā
During the Oct. 1 debate, Americans who watch will see whether the media characterizations of Vance and Walz are true or not. Expect the media to come out of it looking like liars, again.
