Hot Topic: It Is Not Too Early To Start Thinking About The IFE Big Show In Seattle!
Thats right, the Annual World Airline Entertainment Conference and Exhibition, in Seattle again this year, is coming September 9 -12 in the Washington State Convention & Trade Center. While we could wax eloquent (some would argue this point) on the reasons to attend, we cannot think of a better way to find out the state of this industry by walking the show floor and schmoozing with attendees that you havent seen since the last conference. While we will still crusade for an "open day" whereby anyone may visit the show for an appropriate fee, we hope that the agenda will fill your need for IFE and thus we are providing a download link for the show brochure in PDF format. We will also soon have a button on our website where you can also find the brochure. We will be there with our website photo update for those of you who cannot participate. See you at the Conference!
Download the Show Brochure (Adobe Acrobat PDF, ~500k)
(Editor's Note: It was nice of the WAEA to mention the Hot Topic in their brochure see if you can find it!)

HP Finalizes $3 Billion Outsourcing Agreement to Manage Procter & Gamble's IT Infrastructure
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 6, 2003--
One of More Than 200 Managed Services Contracts Signed Since Merger
On the heels of finalizing its largest services contract with Procter & Gamble (P&G), HP (NYSE:HPQ) today announced it has signed more than 200 managed services contracts in the past 12 months.
HP and P&G have reached final agreement on a $3 billion, 10-year managed services contract. Under the terms of the agreement, HP Services will manage P&G's IT infrastructure, data center operations, desktop and end-user support, network management and applications development and maintenance for P&G's global operations in 160 countries.
As part of this agreement, P&G will benefit from some of HP's industry-leading technology solutions, including the adaptive infrastructure capabilities provided by the HP Utility Data Center (UDC) and Adaptive Network Architecture. With UDC, P&G will be able to rapidly deploy and manage servers in its IT environment, providing greater flexibility to quickly respond to changes in its business and IT environments. The HP Adaptive Network Architecture services will provide a policy-based architecture to allow P&G to easily and rapidly add and reconfigure networks from its corporate backbone.
"HP's adaptive enterprise solutions will give P&G the ability to more quickly and easily deploy IT resources and services to meet the needs of our global businesses," said Filippo Passerini, global business services officer, Procter & Gamble. "HP solutions combined with HP's innovation and commitment to service excellence will provide the flexible infrastructure we need to continue to innovate and grow our business."
"HP Services will give P&G the flexibility to respond rapidly to changing business needs such as rapid changes to business processes, speedy entry into new markets and strengthened ability to execute acquisitions quickly," said Ann Livermore, executive vice president, HP Services. "P&G also is expected to save money by maximizing the return on its IT investments, through consolidation and virtualization of IT assets, thus enabling utility-based pricing models."
Approximately 2,000 P&G employees from 48 countries will transition to HP Services, mostly from P&G's Global Business Services unit.
The P&G agreement will commence on Aug. 1, 2003, subject to appropriate government and regulatory approvals.
With the signing of this agreement HP Services continues to build its momentum in managed services where it has signed more than 200 deals since the Compaq merger, including the pending finalization of recently announced mega-deal wins at Ericsson and Bank of Ireland.
Highlights of some recent announcements include:
-- Ericsson's selection of HP to provide IT service for Ericsson's operations worldwide.
-- Bank of Ireland choosing HP Services as its preferred supplier of information technology infrastructure services. The bank intends to award HP a seven-year IT outsourcing contract worth about $600 million.
-- Telecom Italia awarded HP a five-year strategic outsourcing agreement valued at 225 million Euros.
-- A three-year, multi-million deal with Cathay Pacific airline to manage Internet and intranet operations and mission-critical Web services.
"We needed a proactive and experienced partner that could combine technological strength with deployment flexibility and an understanding of our business needs," said David Ho, manager infrastructure delivery, Cathay Pacific. "We found this partner in HP Services."
HP Services has deployed a 24x7 operations team at Cathay Pacific to assist the airline in managing all of its Internet and intranet operations and systems. The team, which works closely with both the IT and business departments of Cathay Pacific, is responsible for the overall stability, security and manageability of the Cathay Pacific Web infrastructure. HP Services also will ensure that the applications environment provides the connectivity, scalability and flexibility that Cathay Pacific will need as it adds new services in the future.
The new customers announced today span all of HP's worldwide regions and target industries, including financial services, telecommunications, manufacturing and government.
HP Services also signed a multi-million dollar contract with Shanghai General Motors (SGM) to optimize the company's supply chain management system. The deployment of build-to-order processes are designed to make SGM's plants among the most advanced automotive supply chain operations in the world. As the prime contractor, HP will be working with Deloitte Consulting to deploy the solution.
"HP has demonstrated the breadth of its services solutions and the depth of its automotive knowledge," said Zhang Xin-quan, chief information officer, SGM. "HP's global resource advantage and management commitment have enhanced our confidence in the successful implementation of this project, which I believe is a win-win project for each party."
Recent reports from a variety of analyst groups also underscore the growth and momentum of HP Services. Last month, Forrester cited HP as the leader in overall Organic IT data center development based on HP's products and services for server provisioning and storage virtualization technology and a better product roadmap. In late March, IDC issued its European desktop and network management services forecast and analysis for 2002-2006, which ranked HP in the leadership category.
In addition, HP Services was listed in the leader quadrant in two recent Gartner Inc. reports: "The 2003 Desktop Outsourcing Magic Quadrant" and the "2003 Help Desk Outsourcing Magic Quadrant." In each report, Gartner evaluated 16 North American service providers based on their vision and ability to execute desktop and help desk services.(1)

Hot Topic: If You Have An Interest In Airborne Servers, You Need To Read This
Later this week (Wednesday and Thursday), the WAEA Technical Committee meets in Los Angeles, California to comment on a strawman functional specification for an airborne digital media server (DMS) submitted by American Airlines. They will then send their recommendations to ARINC to develop a hardware specification. The DMS will provide in-flight entertainment programming and stream digital media to monitors and headsets, non-interactively. This new hardware, we predict, will set the stage for implementation of IFE on new, smaller twin and single-aisle aircraft. We are talking specifically of the developing IFE market that includes aircraft serving the intermediate range, point-to-point flight segments. Single aisle aircraft applications present a key developing market as there are probably well over 3000 single aisle commercial jet planes that could benefit from this product, even if they are not serving the intermediate range routes. As conditions improve in our industry, 1 and 2 hour flight segments will attract IFE (watch Song and jetBlue)! We thought enough of this issue to send out IFExpress early so our readers could consider attending the meeting or follow the proceedings by Internet webcast. Airlines especially need to submit their inputs to this effort because their requirements will result in a baseline of functionality from each DMS box, regardless of manufacturer. Of course, hardware manufacturers will add additional bells and whistles to differentiate their products but a baseline would set the stage for minimum performance. Cant go? Try the WAEA streaming video to be broadcast on the Internet; it will be available to all, so we are told. You have to register to get the URL. Call Suzie McMahon at 703-610-0209 or e-mail smcmahon@waea.org or check the WAEA website for more info.

Hewlett-Packard awarded Ericsson and P&G contracts
BLOOMBERG
Sunday, Apr 13, 2003,Page 11
Hewlett-Packard Co, which acquired Compaq Computer Corp last year to build up its computer-services business, won a US$3 billion contract to run systems at Procter & Gamble Co and an order to manage Ericsson AB's computers.
HP, the world's third-biggest computer-services company, will run data-center, desktop and other systems for P&G, the largest US household goods maker, under the 10-year deal. Electronic Data Systems Corp lost a bid for the work in November, and Procter & Gamble then said it would break the contract into three to five pieces.
The P&G contract is twice as big as any services contract in HPs history. International Business Machines Corp has traditionally dominated big services contracts, last year winning seven of 14 agreements valued at over US$1 billion, according to market researcher Dataquest Inc.
"HP is finally breaking into the big leagues," Dataquest analyst Eric Rocco said. ``It definitely sends a signal to the IBMs and EDSs of the world that HP is a force to reckon with.'' Last year's US$18.9 billion purchase of Compaq moved HP up to third place behind Armonk, New York-based IBM and Plano, Texas-based Electronic Data. HP is seeking more profitable services deals as computer hardware sales slow.
Palo Alto, California-based HP, also the world's largest maker of personal computers, will take over information-technology operations for Ericsson, the biggest maker of wireless networks. The company declined to reveal the value of the Ericsson contract.
"It's a very large-scale agreement," said Ann Livermore, executive vice president of Hewlett-Packard's services division, in an interview. "We've just been awarded two of what we believe will be the largest contracts this year" in the services industry, she said.
The plan called for almost 6,000 Procter & Gamble workers to transfer to Affiliated Computer.
HP was chosen based on the quality of service, the financial proposition, and as "the type of company that would be a good home for our employees," P&G spokesman Damon Jones said.
About 1,850 P&G employees will transfer to HP. Jones said no job cuts are expected at P&G because of this agreement. An undisclosed number of Ericsson workers will transfer to Hewlett-Packard, the Stockholm-based cellphone maker said.
"What the customers realize is there is a very strong alternative to IBM in the marketplace, and that's HP," said Livermore. "When a company makes a choice like this, particularly a 10-year contract, they are placing a bet on who will be their best partner today, five years out and 10 years out."
P&G will get cost savings of about 13 percent by outsourcing operations, Jones said.

Yes Tin-I remember looking at this a few months ago. Thanks for the post. I was trying to point out that the term "MicroOS" has been used by others, having nothing to do with e.Digital, as previously discovered. Thanks for the clarification and the dd.
BD-I posted this back in November, but I remember it being there on line before that. If I remember correctly, the answers from the techies said that the term "MicroOS" was just a term to mean small OS.

Bauder out to pasture, in case you haven't seen yet.
http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/business/20030301-9999_1b1don.html
March 1, 2003
After three decades of opining about local business, columnist Don Bauder announced yesterday that he will retire from The San Diego Union-Tribune.
Bauder, 67, will stop writing his daily column Friday and move to a home he recently had built in Salida, Colo.
Bauder said he intends to keep writing about business and economics, perhaps in book form. A book he wrote about a local economic scandal, "Captain Money and the Golden Girl," was a Southern California best-seller in 1985.
Bauder began his career in journalism at Business Week magazine in 1964 as assistant business editor in Chicago. He became the magazine's Cleveland bureau chief and then joined The San Diego Union as financial editor in 1973. He became a senior columnist at the Union-Tribune in 1996.
His columns have ranged from exposés of local scamsters to commentaries on economic trends to criticism of public funding for the downtown baseball park.
"Don's been a fixture and a lightning rod in the business community for 30 years," said Karin Winner, editor of the Union-Tribune. "He's made fans out of many readers, thanks to the work he's done exposing the latest scam. He's also angered the business establishment at times, for taking such a hard line against professional sports investments in favor of infrastructure improvements. He will be missed."

( BW)(NJ-LUCENT/BELL-LABS)(LU) Bell Labs Scientists Create World's First Micro-Patterned Crystals Inspired by Bioengineering Found in Nature
Business Editors
MURRAY HILL, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 21, 2003--
Study of how nature designs crystals in sea organisms may be important to nanotechnology
Borrowing an approach from Mother Nature, scientists from Lucent Technologies' (NYSE: LU) Bell Labs have created high-quality, complex-shaped crystals that could potentially find applications in communications networks and other devices in the future.
The ornate crystals of calcite are the latest product of an emerging field of science known as biomimetics, which takes engineering principals from the natural world and applies them to man-made materials and technologies. Described in a research paper in today's issue of the journal Science, the crystals are fabricated by a novel technique that involves depositing the mineral in such a way that each single crystal contains intricate microscopic patterns. It is an approach that may have broad implications for materials science and nanotechnology.
"I have always been fascinated with nature's ability to perfect materials," said Joanna Aizenberg, the Bell Labs materials scientist who led the research. "The more we study biological organisms, the more we realize how much we can learn from them. We recently discovered that nature makes excellent micro-patterned crystals, and we decided to see if we could copy the natural approach in the lab, since this technique may be useful in nanotechnology."
About two years ago, Aizenberg and her colleagues made the surprising discovery that thousands of calcite crystals spread throughout the exoskeletons of brittlestars, starfish-like marine invertebrates, collectively form an unusual kind of compound eye for the animals. The brittlestar's calcite microlenses expertly compensate for birefringence and spherical aberration, two common types of distortions in lenses. This led the Bell Labs scientists to attempt to mimic nature's success and design crystals based on the brittlestar model, with the ultimate goal of building complexes arrays of microlenses like the brittlestar's.
Today lenses are typically made using a "top down" approach, in which a piece of glass is ground down to a lens' exact specifications. The brittlestar, on the other hand, makes its microlenses using a "bottom up" approach, in which successive layers of calcite are deposited onto an organic template in intricate patterns to form perfect crystalline lenses at the temperature of seawater.
"This is an excellent example where we can learn from Nature," said Cherry Murray, senior vice president of physical sciences research at Bell Labs. "In this case, a relatively simple organism has a solution to a very complex problem in integrated optics and materials design. By studying the brittlestar, we can learn about low-cost ways of forming single crystals in complex shapes at low temperatures. While many years from commercial use, this understanding could be very important to fabrication of nano-patterned materials."
Aizenberg and colleagues David Muller, John Grazul and Don Hamann studied biomineralization principles and developed a new crystallization approach that allowed them to directly fabricate single crystals of calcite that were about one-tenth of a centimeter across, with patterns less than ten micrometers across, which is approximately one-tenth the diameter of a human hair.
The new Bell Labs approach may revolutionize how crystals are made in the future for a wide variety of applications. Single crystals patterned at the micron scale or smaller and integrated into opto-electronic circuits are important components in various electronic, sensory and optical devices.
Bell Labs is the leading source of new communications technologies. It has generated nearly 30,000 patents since 1925 and has played a pivotal role in inventing or perfecting key communications technologies, including transistors, digital networking and signal processing, lasers and fiber-optic communications systems, communications satellites, cellular telephony, electronic switching of calls, touch-tone dialing, and modems. Bell Labs scientists have received six Nobel Prizes in Physics, nine U.S. Medals of Science and eight U.S. Medals of Technology. CONSUMER GUIDE: PORTABLE MP3 PLAYERS
Posted by Gern on Yahoo.
Hard drive or flash? Depends on how much music you want to download
and how much you want to spend
February 16, 2003
BY BEN SCHMITT
FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER
First there was the VCR. Then came the DVD. And just as the PDA
(personal digital assistant) is becoming a household acronym, the MP3
is taking over.
MP3 stands for Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG), Audio Layer III.
When choosing a portable MP3 player, think size and
compression.RIPPING
A common way to use an MP3 player involves downloading your CD
collection. Doing this requires a recording process known in geek-
speak as ripping a CD. Many MP3s come with the necessary software,
which can easily be downloaded onto your computer.
A CD ripper takes data from a CD and converts it to a wave file,
which is made up of uncompressed and interchangeable audio data. How
long it takes to convert data from a CD depends on the speed of your
computer's CD-ROM. An average is about 10 minutes.
With some players, you can compress and download your entire music
collection and categorize it into listening files. With others, which
are cheaper and don't hold as much music, you can work out at the gym
or take a jog with a musical device about the size of the palm of
your hand.
"The biggest question I get when people come in shopping for MP3s
is: 'How much music can they hold?' " said Rich Krupa, who works in
the computer section at Best Buy in Roseville.
The answer lies in how much money consumers are willing to spend and
what they want to get out of their MP3. Keep in mind that there are
two major types of MP3s: hard drive players and flash players.
Hard drive players, such as Apple's iPod or the Archos Jukebox
Studio, allow owners to download up to 400 hours of music
(approximately 4,000 songs) onto the player. They generally range in
price from $250 to $500.
Flash players, such as the SONICblue Rio S50 or the Creative Labs
Nomad II, do not use hard drives but instead use memory cards that,
on average, hold up to four hours of music. The memory cards, similar
to those used in digital cameras, are interchangeable and can be
recorded over. So if you have two hours of music you use for working
out, you can either record over the music when you get tired of it or
pop in another memory card with different music. These can be bought
for as little as $120.
"More and more, the MP3 is becoming a tool of the trade, like a
regular PDA," said Gina Eldridge, marketing director for Archos
Technology in Irvine, Calif.
MP3 music files are CD-quality compressed recordings. This is one of
the reasons that MP3 format music files are gaining popularity with
music lovers. They're the perfect way to get legal music files over
the Internet without lengthy download times.
Some of the major issues users care about when it comes to comparing
MP3 players are: the number of songs they store, how easily they can
find a desired song, sound quality, how easy it is to load music into
the gadget and where they can use the player. (Some players can be
hooked into stereo setups at home and in the car.)
"The only drawback to MP3s versus standard CDs is the sound quality,"
said Karl Brauer, editor-in-chief at Edmunds.com, an on-line resource
for auto consumers based in Santa Monica, Calif. "However, most
people can barely tell the difference, even under perfect listening
conditions. In a car, where there is always a certain amount of wind,
engine and road noise, a format like MP3, which is near CD quality
but offers far more custom features and storage potential, is
perfect."
Some models also pick up FM radio stations and have voice-activated
microphones, which allow them to function like a hand-held tape
recorder. You can even download the voice files to your PC.
"Consumers are very excited by MP3 and the whole possibility of
owning one," said Stan Ng, product line manager for Apple's iPod. "If
you have 50 or 100 CDs, you're forced to grab five or so and bring
them along with you wherever you go. With MP3s like the iPod, you
never have to take the music along. You have that entire music
collection in your pocket."
Legal issues
There are plenty of Web sites that allow you to legally download free
music to your MP3 players. These sites, including www.mp3.com and
www.pp3now.com, usually feature up-and-coming musical artists who
want to gain exposure.
The federal Home Recording Act allows you to make copies of your
music CDs for personal use. You cannot share or sell these copied
files or CDs. Once you have distributed these files to individuals
who do not own the original CD, you have broken copyright laws.
You are not permitted to go on the Internet and trade your MP3 files
with people who do not own their own copy of the CD. Note that
copyright laws that pertain to ripping and encoding legally purchased
CD audio music for your personal use vary from country to country.
Despite the fall of Napster, many illegal Web sites allow you to grab
any song you want and download it to your computer. It then can be
transferred to an MP3.
The music industry was initially reluctant to endorse MP3 because of
the threat of wholesale piracy.
Apple's iPod comes with a disclaimer advising you not to steal music.
"We encourage people to do the right thing," Ng said. "We understand
artists need to be compensated. The iPod is about taking your music
and CD collection and bringing it with you."
SONICblue has a different philosophy.
"We don't actively monitor our customers one way or another," said
Kevin Yeung, senior product line manager for SONICblue. "We're
primarlily just a hard-drive manufacturer. Where people get their
music files (is) not really our business."
Douglas Kinloch, business development manager for Infinite Data
Storage, an international consumer electronics technology development
company, said music piracy from the Internet is going to continue to
be a concern "until the law catches up with the technology."
And MP3 players appear to be on the upswing, Kinloch said.
"We're already beyond the stage of an MP3 being a luxury item where
only the geeks and enthusiasts are into it," he said.
