All the President’s Lies
David Leonhardt MARCH 20, 2017
The ninth week of Donald Trump’s presidency began with the F.B.I. director calling him a liar.
The director, the very complicated, James Comey, [ https://www.lawfareblog.com/james-comey-hillary-clinton-and-email-investigation-guide-perplexed ] didn’t use the L-word in his congressional testimony Monday. Comey serves at the pleasure of the president, after all. But his meaning was clear as could be. Trump has repeatedly accused Barack Obama of wiretapping his phones, and Comey explained there is “no information that supports” the claim.
I’ve previously argued that not every untruth deserves to be branded with the L-word, because it implies intent and somebody can state an untruth without doing so knowingly. George W. Bush didn’t lie when he said Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, and Obama didn’t lie when he said people who liked their current health insurance could keep it. They made careless statements that proved false (and they deserved much of the criticism they got).
But the current president of the United States lies. He lies in ways that no American politician ever has before. He has lied about — among many other things — Obama’s birthplace, John F. Kennedy’s assassination, Sept. 11, the Iraq War, ISIS, NATO, military veterans, Mexican immigrants, Muslim immigrants, anti-Semitic attacks, the unemployment rate, the murder rate, the Electoral College, voter fraud and his groping of women. There are many links here in this small paragraph that I would have to post two posts to capture them .., it's my guess but I think so go here to pick them up - [ https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/20/opinion/all-the-presidents-lies.html?action=click&contentCollection=U.S.&module=Trending&version=Full®ion=Marginalia&pgtype=article ]
He tells so many untruths that it’s time to leave behind the textual parsing over which are unwitting and which are deliberate — as well as the condescending notion that most of Trump’s supporters enjoy his lies.
James Comey testifying on Capitol Hill on Monday.

Trump sets out to deceive people. As he has put it, “I play to people’s fantasies.”
Caveat emptor: When Donald Trump says something happened, it should not change anyone’s estimation of whether the event actually happened. Maybe it did, maybe it didn’t. His claim doesn’t change the odds.
Which brings us to Russia.
Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential campaign was an attack on the United States. [ https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/14/opinion/what-trump-is-doing-is-not-ok.html ] It’s the kind of national-security matter that a president and members of Congress swear to treat with utmost seriousness when they take the oath of office. Yet now it has become the subject of an escalating series of lies by the president and the people who work for him,
As Comey was acknowledging on Monday that the F.B.I. was investigating possible collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign, Trump was lying about it. From both his personal Twitter account and the White House account, he told untruths.
A few hours later, his press secretary, Sean Spicer, went before the cameras and lied about the closeness between Trump and various aides who have documented Russian ties. Do you remember Paul Manafort, the chairman of Trump’s campaign, who ran the crucial delegate-counting operation? Spicer said Manafort had a “very limited role” in said campaign.
The big question now is not what Trump and the White House are saying about the Russia story. They will evidently say anything. The questions are what really happened and who can uncover the truth.
The House of Representatives, unfortunately, will not be doing so. I was most saddened during Comey’s testimony not by the White House’s response, which I’ve come to expect, but by the Republican House members questioning him. They are members of a branch of government that the Constitution holds as equal to the presidency, but they acted like Trump staff members, decrying leaks about Russia’s attack rather than the attack itself. The Watergate equivalent is claiming that Deep Throat was worse than Haldeman, Ehrlichman and Nixon.
It fell to Adam Schiff, a Democratic representative from Southern California, to lay out the suspicious ties between Trump and Russia (while also hinting he couldn’t describe some classified details). Schiff did so in a calm, nine-minute monologue that’s worth watching. [ https://thinkprogress.org/this-congressmans-short-speech-crisply-lays-out-the-evidence-of-collusion-between-trump-and-russia-d166801a11fa#.fxxfrqd8h ] He walked through pro-Putin payments to Michael Flynn and through another Trump’s aide’s advance notice of John Podesta’s hacked email and through the mysterious struggle over the Republican Party platform on Ukraine.
“Is it possible that all of these events and reports are completely unrelated, and nothing more than an entirely unhappy coincidence? Yes, it is possible,” Schiff said. “But it is also possible, maybe more than possible, that they are not coincidental, not disconnected and not unrelated, and that the Russians used the same techniques to corrupt U.S. persons that they have employed in Europe and elsewhere. We simply don’t know, not yet, and we owe it to the country to find out.”
Comey, as much as liberals may loathe him for his 2016 bungling, seems to be one of the few public officials with the ability and willingness to pursue the truth. I dearly hope that Republican members of the Senate are patriotic enough to do so as well.
Our president is a liar, and we need to find out how serious his latest lies are.
Mr. Adam Sciff on Russian Scandal:
Ironically the list comes out the same day that Trump is meeting with Bill Gates, who is the world's richest man for the fourth straight year, according to Forbes. The Microsoft (MSFT, Tech30) founder's net worth is $86 billion, up from $75 billion last year.
Warren Buffett reclaimed the No. 2 spot on the list for the first time since 2014, with a net worth of $75.6 billion, up from $60.8 billion in 2016. Amazon (AMZN, Tech30) founder Jeff Bezos rose to No. 3 on the list for the first time, thanks to the jump in in Amazon shares, which boosted his net worth to $72.8 billion.

Trump drops 220 spots on the Forbes Billionaires List

President Donald Trump is the nation's first billionaire president -- but he's not as rich as he used
to be, according to the Forbes 2017 Billionaires List published Monday.
The magazine put his net worth at $3.5 billion, down $1 billion from the rankings it issued a year ago.
As a result, his position on the Forbes' ranking dropped 220 spots, leaving him tied with 19 others as the 544th richest person in the world.
Forbes said that much of the decline in Trump's net worth is due to softness in the midtown Manhattan real estate market.

BANANAS REPUBLIC
The Trump-Russia Story Has Only Just Begun (To Explode)
Not since Richard Nixon’s Watergate scandal has an investigative hearing made it so clear that a presidency was in serious legal peril.
By Howard Fineman

There's a video .. Go listen to it .. ;)
WASHINGTON ? Let’s step back for a minute and consider again what we saw Monday in a hearing room of the U.S. House.
The director of the FBI, with the director of the National Security Agency agreeing at his side, in effect called the president of the United States a liar ? and, oh, by the way, the president’s 2016 campaign indeed is under investigation for allegedly having secretly teamed up with Russia to win the election.
After two months of Donald J. Trump’s presidency and more than a year of his campaign, our political senses are so dulled by tumult that we can barely recognize history when we see it. Make no mistake. Monday’s hearing was all but unprecedented.
Not since a White House aide named Alexander Butterfield told the Watergate committee in 1973 that President Richard Nixon had bugged his own Oval Office has an investigative hearing made it so clear that a presidency was in serious legal jeopardy.
Now we know for sure that, while no one “tapped” Trump’s phones, his campaign circle is in the gunsights of the FBI. The issue is whether Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose interference in the 2016 election is now an accepted fact, tried to rig the outcome with the knowledge or collusion of Team Trump.
Foreign countries have meddled in U.S. politics from the founding of the republic. At the dawn of the 19th century, France and Britain fought what amounted to a proxy war between U.S. allies of the two countries. France and Britain aided opposite sites in the Civil War. German interests spread propaganda here to try to keep America from fighting in World War I and World War II. And of course, the Soviet Union infested the State Department and other portions of the U.S. government during the Cold War.
But it is highly unlikely that a foreign government ever has been under investigation for direct ties to and direct ? and successful ? efforts to aid a presidential candidate, especially one now serving as president, and who has expressed such interest in better relations with the government under investigation.
While Democrats probed FBI Director James Comey and NSA Director Michael Rogers for evidence of links between Trump and Russia, Republicans sought to change the conversation by asking about leaks pertaining to Trump and Russia. Comey insisted he was concerned about the leaks, but seemed more eager to ominously deny comment on where the unauthorized disclosures were coming from.
If Team Trump is found to be complicit in any way, leading figures in the campaign and in the White House would indeed become targets of law enforcement. The White House and its minions will howl about “FAKE NEWS” ? the president did so via Twitter Monday morning ? but even Fox was covering the House hearing.
Which, in turn, means this story is just beginning. Here’s why:
what's your problem? this answer, right here that I am responding to has nothing at all to do with my post..

LOCK HIM UP!!!
FBI Director James Comey has been very clear that viewers of the House Intelligence Committee’s hearing on Russia and the 2016 elections should not “draw any conclusions from the fact that I may not be able to comment on certain topics.” Has that stopped Donald Trump or whichever of his advisers tweeting from the official @POTUS account during the hearing? Of course not.
Comey, in his opening statement:
Weekend Bowelbreathers in the news ..Lift your head up wingnuts!
How much is Donald Trump’s travel and protection costing, anyway?

is that how you spell it?
from what I've read .. he may be having a hard time in future days ...
Comey’s testimony makes clear that, contra Trump’s tweets earlier Monday morning, the FBI’s Russia investigation is neither “fake news” nor in the rearview mirror. We don’t yet know what this investigation will turn up, but it is clear that it will continue to hang over the administration for some time.

Comey confirms FBI probe into Trump-Russia collusion
GO LISTEN! unbelievable that one sentence coming from him can be so chilling
By Austin Wright and Martin Matishak

FBI Director James Comey confirmed Monday the FBI is investigating Russia’s meddling in the presidential election, including possible links between the Trump campaign and Moscow.
He also shot down President Donald Trump's explosive claim that President Barack Obama wiretapped Trump Tower in the run-up
to the presidential election.
Comey told the House Intelligence Committee at a hearing that the bureau normally does not comment on the existence of counterintelligence
investigations, but that he was authorized by the Justice Department to do so in this case because of the extraordinary public interest.
Comey noted that "some folks may want to make comparison to past instances where the Department of Justice and the FBI have spoken about the details of some investigations,” an apparent reference to his decision to speak publicly before the election about the FBI’s investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails. He said the difference was that “those involved the details of completed investigations.”
Republicans on the committee focused their questions on getting to the bottom of who leaked to the news media the fact that former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn had pre-inauguration conversations with Russia's ambassador.
Comey declined to say whether the FBI was investigating the potential leak of classified information related to Flynn, but said that such a leak would be taken very seriously.
Minutes before Comey's highly anticipated testimony , the House Intelligence Committee's ranking Democrat, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) scolded Donald Trump on the president's platform of choice: Twitter.
“Mr. President, the Russians hacked our election and interfered. No one disputes this now, but you. This is what is called 'fact,'” Schiff wrote in a series of tweets denouncing Trump's claim that his predecessor wiretapped Trump Tower. “The intelligence community concluded the Russians will interfere again. This is why full investigation is important to country. Please stop.”
Schiff followed with more tweets directed at the president, saying there’s no evidence former President Barack Obama or the British government surveilled him.
“Your suggestion British wiretapped you & jape with Merkel are harming our relationships with key allies. This is called ‘collateral damage,’” Schiff tweeted, a reference to White House press secretary Sean Spicer’s claim last week that the U.K.’s intelligence apparatus might have spied on Trump. The White House has since promised to the U.K. that it wouldn’t repeat those allegations.
Schiff’s messages were in response to a series of early morning tweets from the president on Monday morning. Hours before FBI Director James Comey is set to testify before Congress on Russia’s interference into the 2016 election, Trump tweeted that there’s no evidence that he colluded with Russia and that any claims that he did are “fake news.” He blamed the Democrats for fabricating the story because “running a terrible campaign.”
At the start of the hearing, Schiff delivered a lengthy speech running through the public evidence of links between Trump associates and Moscow. He leaned heavily on an unsubstantiated "dossier" compiled by a former British intelligence agent.
“If the Trump campaign, or anybody associated with it, aided or abetted the Russians, it would not only be a serious crime, it would also represent one of the most shocking betrayals of our democracy in history,” Schiff said in his opening remarks.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based group tracking developments in Syria's conflict, said Thursday's air raids in al-Jina, southwest of Atarib in the western countryside of Aleppo, killed at least 42 people and wounded dozens.
The jets reportedly struck at the time of evening prayer so the mosque was full of worshippers, with local activists saying up to 300 people were inside at the time of the air raids.
Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Observatory, which monitors the war via a network of contacts across Syria, said that most of those killed were civilians.

Trump's wiretapping claim was just shot
down by the heads of the Senate Intel Committee

Top Republicans have spent days distancing themselves from President Donald Trump’s unsubstantiated allegation that President Barack Obama tapped his phones. Now the heads of the Senate Intelligence Committee are flatly saying it didn't happen.
“Based on the information available to us, we see no indications that Trump Tower was the subject of surveillance by any element of the United States government either before or after Election Day 2016," the panel’s chair, Republican Sen. Richard Burr, and ranking member, Democratic Sen. Mark Warner, said in a joint statement.
The unusually definitive public comments from the heads of the Senate intelligence panel come one day after Trump offered a rambling and largely incoherent defense of his claim about the wiretap, one of the most explosive allegations in recent American political history. Pressed to substantiate it during an interview with Fox News host Tucker Carlson, the president said this:
Are you capable of civil discourse?

Dutch elections: Wilders' far-right party defeated, exit polls show

Go watch and READ!
(CNN)Conservative Dutch Prime Minster Mark Rutte has defeated a challenge from his far-right rival in an election widely seen as an indicator of populist sentiment in Europe, exit polls indicated Wednesday.
The anti-immigrant firebrand Geert Wilders, who had promised to "de-Islamise" the Netherlands, was on course for a poorer than expected performance. In exit polls for the national broadcaster NOS, his Freedom Party tied for second place with two other parties.
The leftwing environmentalist GroenLinks (Green Left) party looked likely to make big gains, while the PVDA (Labour) party, Rutte's outgoing partners in coalition, were on course for a historic defeat. Turnout was 81%, NOS said, the highest for three decades.
Wilders tweeted: "PVV voters thanks. We won seats, first victory is in. Rutte hasn't got rid of me yet."
