Massive Chinese Sovereign Wealth Fund Signaling Interest In Resources
January 13, 2011 -- The Globe and Mail, Canada’s newspaper of record, reports that the massive China Investment Corporation (CIC) is opening its first foreign office in Toronto.

The CIC, of course, is one of the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds with US $332 billion in assets. Set up in 2007 the mandate of the fund is to invest a portion of the world's largest single pool of capital, China’s massive currency reserves (currently about $2.5 trillion).

The decision by the CIC comes after heavy lobbying to have the fund open its first foreign office in global finance capitals such as New York or London. But the fund chose Toronto, and that's interesting.

Canada is a heavily-resource weighted economy. The TSX is loaded with miners and oil companies, and so early speculation is that the CIC’s decision signals an interest in resource plays


Early speculation is that the fund will be looking for stakes in larger companies (possibly oilsands producers). But the move has to be seen as a significant sign of interest by one of the world's largest investment funds that the future of global capital markets is in commodities.

Could a wall of money--a chunk of China's massive currency reserves--soon be washing through the Canadian resource sector? The CIC seems to be signaling yes.

Well they got a hell of a deal on that nugget now didn't they. Its worth 1.36 million now......but then again thats only a 36% gain on a 30 year investment I think
