Blanket Production Update and 2012 Outlook -
TORONTO, Jan. 24, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ -
Caledonia Mining Corporation -
("Caledonia") (TSX: CAL) (NASDAQ-OTCQX: CALVF) (AIM: CMCL)
announces gold production from the Blanket Mine in Zimbabwe
during Q4 2011 which ended December 31, 2011.
10,533oz gold produced during Q4 2011,
representing an 8.1% increase on Q3 2011 (9,743oz),
and a 69% increase on Q4 2010 (6,227oz)
Total 2011 gold production was 35,826oz, a 102% increase
over the annual gold production in 2010 of 17,707oz
Targeted 2012 annual gold production of 40,000oz
Blanket Production
The Company is pleased to announce a successful year at
the Blanket Mine which produced 35,826oz of gold,
an increase of 102% over the previous year.
In accordance with our aim to continuously improve operations
at Blanket, the following infrastructure, process and equipment
investment programmes were undertaken during
the final quarter of 2011:
Considerable work on the refurbishment of the 14, 18 and 22
Level underground haulages continued throughout Q4 and this
is expected to be completed by the end of Q1 2012.
This programme is essential to support and sustain our
increased underground production.
The installation of an automatic cyanide measuring and dosing
system on the CIL circuit was commissioned.
This installation is providing both better control over, and a
detectable reduction in, cyanide usage per tonne of ore milled.
Certain rectification and maintenance work on the 825m deep
No4 Shaft was commenced during November 2011.
This work is expected to be completed by the end of February
2012 and once completed will allow Blanket to increase the
speed of the No4 Shaft Winder, thereby increasing hoisting
capacity.
As noted in the Q3 MD&A, this work may have an adverse
effect on gold production in the first quarter of 2012.
A Belt Scale was installed on the No1 Conveyor Belt so that
all ore tonnages delivered from various ore sources such as
the 14 Level mid-shaft loading station, Lima, and in due
course the satellite properties such as GG and Mascot, can
be individually and accurately measured.
The re-programed computerised recording system is expected
to be commissioned during early February and the system is
then expected to facilitate further metallurgical optimisation.
Outlook
Following a year in which Caledonia has increased production
at Blanket by 102% to 35,826oz
(2010 gold production was 17,707oz),
we are now confident that we will be able to achieve our
targeted gold production of 40,000oz for
the current financial year.
Discussions with the Government of Zimbabwe regarding the
indigenisation of the Blanket Mine have continued.

leach tanks equipped with 45 kW agitators where leaching
at 50% solids and simultaneous adsorption of dissolved gold

The CIL plant has a design capacity of 3,800 tonnes of milled ore

Elution of the gold from the loaded carbon and electro winning
is done on site.
Gold is deposited onto wire wool cathodes, the loaded cathodes
are acid-digested and the resultant gold solids are smelted
to produce gold bullion of approximately 90% purity, prior
to Blanket exporting it directly to Rand Refinery in South Africa
for final refining and sale.
The full proceeds of sale (i.e. before payment of any royalty)
are paid to Blanket's foreign currency account with a commercial

PRECIOUS METALS: Gold Hits Record As Econ Worries Rise Again
NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Investors propelled gold to record highs Tuesday
as they continued buying the precious metal as a way to offset
potential losses from a faltering global economic recovery and dollar.
The most actively traded gold contract, for December delivery,
rose $24.60, or 2%, to a record settlement of $1,271.70 an ounce
on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.
The intraday high was $1,276.50.
Nearby but thinly traded September gold also settled at a record,
$1,269.70, up $24.60, or 2%.
Gold--seen as a relatively safe place to park cash during times
of economic uncertainty--took a bump ...
Gold also has a backdrop of support from seasonal factors
and on news that Russian production of the metal is on the decline,
noted Ira Epstein, director of the Ira Epstein division of
the Linn Group.
Figures released by the gold producers' union Tuesday showed
Russia produced 3.6% less gold in the first seven months of 2010
than in 2009.
September also often is a stronger month for gold as market
participants return from summer holidays and festival- and
wedding-related buying ramps up in India...
Silver $20.51 and upward...
How high silver will reach during this Sept-Nov bull run season?
this is getting fun..

More details as well as supporting figures on the above targets will soon be posted on Unico's website. A summary of the historical production from the various mine targets appears below:
1) Upper (Old) Deer Trail Mine -- This oxidized Au-Ag-Pb-rich manto was discovered in 1878 and operated intermittently until closed in 1942 by World War II. It is hosted by the Permian Toroweap Sandstone. Over 138,000 tons grading 1.38 opt Au, 11.49 opt Ag, and 3.26% Pb(3 & 5) was mined from over 6,000 feet of workings during the 1918 to 1923 primary period of production(1a,b,c,d). However, one historic report states that 147,442 tons was mined from 1916-1929 having an average of 0.43 opt Au, 9.5 opt Ag, and 2.5% Pb(4). The historic cut-off grade is estimated to have been 0.200 opt Au based on historic detailed grade maps of the mined and un-mined stopes. Statements from former miners independently confirm this figure. In-house estimated mining, milling, and haulage costs indicate that grades as low as 0.100 opt Au can be profitably extracted at current metal prices. Potential remains for extracting mineralized back-fill, slashing ribs, and discovering parallel and overlying mantos.
2) 3400 Area of Lower (New) Deer Trail Mine -- This portion of the Lower Deer Trail Mine is comprised by a Zn-Ag-Au dominant polymetallic sulphide manto hosted by the Pennsylvanian Callville Limestone. It was developed by over 5,000 feet of workings from 1945 to 1962(1a,b,c,d) and produced about 25,000 tons of mineralization from three levels averaging 0.171 opt Au, 11.61 opt Ag, 7.45% Zn, 2.96% Pb, and 0.52% Cu(6). Production ceased in order to pursue the larger and richer 8600 Area Manto accessed by the same 9,000 foot long adit. Potential remains open down-dip and can be pursued through underground development or by drilling.
3) 8600 Area of Lower (New) Deer Trail Mine -- The 8600 Area Manto of the Lower Deer Trail Mine is a Ag-Zn-Pb dominant polymetallic manto but is hosted by the Permian Toroweap Sandstone. It is the un-oxidized extension of the same body that was exploited in Upper Deer Trail Mine. The 8600 Area is developed by over 10,000 feet of workings(1) and is accessed by the 3400 Area haulage drift. Approximately 100,000 tons of mineralization from three levels was direct-shipped to Midvale, Utah from 1964 until 1981 when plummeting prices forced the mine's closure(1c, 1d & 6). The grade averaged 0.100 opt Au, 15.00 opt Ag, 12.00% Zn, 5.0% Pb, and 0.60% Cu(5).
The working face is 30 feet wide by 10 feet high and is developed in massive sphalerite and argentiferous galena(1d). Potential is open down-dip and can best be pursued by advancing the working face and long-hole drilling. The likelihood for parallel as well as super- and subjacent mantos in the same formation is also high.
Much larger more speculative exploration targets exist that have the strong likelihood of meeting a major mining company's deposit size, DCF/ROR, and sustained cash-flow criteria. These include the following:
1) Redwall Limestone Manto Potential -- The Mississippian strata of the western United States is host to a plethora of small to medium-sized polymetallic Ag-rich manto-type deposits. Some are reasonably large.
These include those mined at Leadville (40M tons)(10) and Gilman, Colorado (10M tons)(11), Tintic and Park City, Utah (approximately 14M tons each)(12 & 13), and Goodsprings, Nevada. The same strata immediately underlie the Callville Limestone at the Deer Trail Mine and conceptually may host similar moderate to large deposits. This seems especially likely since our property's mines are developed in the Callville Limestone, Toroweap Sandstone, and Kaibab Limestone but the Mississippian has historically been a more widespread and prospective host. Pursuit of this target would require six 1,000 to 1,500 feet DDH that would seek to intersect the target formation adjacent to favorable structures.
2) Deer Trail Mountain Porphyry System -- There is deep potential for a large Cu-Au or Mo Porphyry System on the property(5,9 & 15). The dominant metal within the Deer Trail Mountain intrusive is nebulous but alteration patterns and structural features clearly indicate the presence of a large porphyry system. An over 2,600 foot DDH in Noranda's 1983 program failed to reach the target. However, the metasomatic mineral assemblages at the low angle (-26°) hole's terminus suggest that it was within 3,000 feet of the porphyry body(9). In consequence of the precipitous drop in molybdenum and other base metal prices in 1983, combined with resultant drastic reduction in exploration budgets, Noranda abandoned its exploration project at the Deer Trail Mine. Molybdenum prices following another steep decline in 2008 from historic highs have now recovered much of their value and Mo Porphyries are projected to once again become attractive exploration and development targets. Even a small Rico (Silver Creek), Colorado-sized deposit (40M tons at 0.310% Mo) possesses a gross value of $4.2 billion at current prices ($17/lb Mo)(14). A state-of-the art induced polarization (IP) or controlled-source audio-frequency magneto-telluric (CS-AMT) survey followed by one 3,500 to 5,000 foot DDH would be necessary to begin testing the system.
On October 27, 2009, Deer Trail Mining Company announced that the Utah Department of Environmental Quality and its regulatory agency, the Division of Water Quality, had approved its application for the construction of a new enlarged tailings pond impoundment. The company anticipates completion of the tailings impoundment prior to December 31, 2009. It subsequently will be utilized immediately to dispose of waste material from one or more of the mine targets.
"We are pleased to have the updated estimates of the potential tonnages that may be available to us as we move forward with work to fully document, as well as possibly expanding, them," said Charles Madsen, executive vice president for operations of Unico, Inc. "The new tailings impoundment will assist us with developing the presently known Deer Trail bodies and targets as we continue to further define them."
Cautionary Note to U.S. Investors -- The United States Securities and Exchange Commission permits U.S. mining companies, in their filings with the SEC, to disclose only those mineral deposits that a company can economically and legally extract or produce. We use certain terms on this website (or press release), such as "measured," "indicated'" and "inferred" resources, which the SEC guidelines strictly prohibit U.S. registered companies from including in their filings with the SEC. U.S. Investors are urged to consider closely the disclosure in our form 10-K which may be secured from us, or from the SEC's website at http://www.sec/gov/edgar.shtml.
The tonnage potential and economic study was undertaken by Deer Trail Director of Engineering Wayne M. Ash (P. Eng.) and Chief Geologist L. Alex Scarbrough, Jr. It incorporates both historical and new data on the base and precious metal-bearing mantos that have been partially mined as well as mine dumps and exploration targets(2 thru 15). As such, the amounts should be viewed only as in-house professional estimates of material and values that may be present and which must be documented by ongoing exploration and development. The data is only intended to provide an overview of the potential for multiple targets that exists on the property. It should also be noted that no formal mining plan is yet in place for the more advanced mine targets. Additionally, the feasibility of profitably extracting any mineralization present or which is projected to exist has only been preliminarily estimated and not yet fully established by on-site exploitation.

The Form 4, which was filed on February 25, 2009, reports that Mr. Brown acquired 1,906,525 shares of common stock at a price of $0.004. The acquisition brings the total number of common shares that Mr. Brown owns to 2,795,110. The filing can be viewed through by clicking the appropriate link at http://www.unicomining.com./IR/investorrelations.php.
"I am pleased to have the opportunity to increase my common stock position in Unico at this time," stated Mr. Brown. "Recent events at the Deer Trail Mine, including the opportunities presented by the tellurium content as well the alternative methods for the recovery of gold and silver from the recently produced concentrates at the site, have only added to my confidence in the future potential of the company. I look forward to observing the next steps in the development of the Deer Trail project and will consider further additions to my common stock position as additional milestones are achieved."
Unico recently announced that due to the continued strength in gold and silver markets, Unico's wholly owned Deer Trail Mining Company subsidiary has explored different leaching technologies for the recovery of gold and silver from the company's recently produced concentrates at the Deer Trail mill facility. Several tests have been conducted in the Deer Trail metallurgical facility, and samples of the concentrate were also sent to an outside laboratory for leachablity test work. The results of the testing suggested that as much as 91% of the gold and 88% of the silver contained in the concentrate may be extractable within the first two hours of agitated leaching. The sample used in this test work represents an average of our concentrate product produced thus far in the floatation circuit at the Deer Trail Mill Facility. The procedure was conducted by fire assay and yielded 0.43 oz/ton gold (Au) and 71 oz/ton silver (Ag).
The company also recently reported the presence of tellurium, an extremely rare element which is used in a variety of applications, at the Deer Trail Mine. Unico is currently exploring all available commercial opportunities for the tellurium content.

hi Bob, good morning. this one is getting ready.
nice comments and great article.
The most upper holes RC-1 through RC-7 were placed well above the elevation of the known workings of the No. 2 Tunnel and slightly south of the northwesterly trending ore channel. Significant mineralization was intercepted in holes RC-1 and RC-2, which were drilled in the area closest to the main ore channel.
Drill holes RC-5, 6, 8, 9, 13 and 14 were all drilled well south of the historically delineated mineralization, and on the southern most up-side of a post mineral fault. It can be concluded that mineralization intercepted in these holes is not directly related to the mineralization of the main Upper Deer Trail ore channel.

In early 2005, Deer Trail Mining Company contracted with Connors Drilling to commence an underground diamond core drill program. This 2nd phase of exploratory drilling inside the PTH Tunnel of the Deer Trail Mine has been completed. The Phase II underground diamond core drilling program was primarily designed to target known horizons of mineralization and identify new mineralized horizons throughout the main ore channel of the Deer Trail Mine. The Company completed 7,235 feet of diamond core drilling and finished 13 underground drill holes. According to preliminary reports by the Company's geologist, all of the holes drilled were reported to intersect mineralization within their designated targets. That report states that a total of approximately 514 feet of mineralization was intersected and consisted mostly of sulfide minerals (e.g. tetrahedrite, galena, pyrite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite). Other intercepts were encountered through oxidized mineral not reported in this total, as well as zones of subtly altered rock that may contain high mineral values and offer significant potential. The Company is now working on final independent core logging and splitting verification, and plans to ship its core samples to an independent lab for analysis.
In March 2006, Deer Trail Mining Company, LLC entered into an agreement with Behre Dolbear and Company (USA), Inc. to conduct geological services and consulting at Unico's Deer Trail Mine in Marysvale, Utah. The focus of Behre Dolbear's work is related to the underground diamond core drilling program undertaken at the Deer Trail Mine in 2005.
Behre Dolbear is currently performing the geological core logging and spitting verification on the samples and overseeing the shipment of those samples to ALS Chemex for analysis. Behre Dolbear has also been contracted to report on the mineralization and provide additional technical advice on the project as desired by Deer Trail Mining Company, LLC.
Behre Dolbear and Company (USA) has issued the following information from the Interim Summary Report on their work completed thus far. The report from Behre Dolbear states:
"Unico, Incorporated drilled 7,235 feet of BQ diameter core at various inclinations and azimuths from four drill stations in the Patrick Thomas Henry (PTH) adit at the Deer Trail Mine from December 2004 to April 2005. At that time, the core was not logged in detail and no analyses were done. Table 1 summarizes the drilling statistics. The station locations are defined based on the approximate footage from the PTH adit portal.

Behre Dolbear & Company (USA), Inc. (Behre Dolbear) contracted with Unico in March 2006 to geologically log the core, select intervals for analyses and assays, supervise the sawing of the selected intervals, submit those samples to a laboratory for analyses, opine on the mineralization observed, and provide technical advice to Unico. Between March 23, 2006 and October 6, 2006, Behre Dolbear logged in detail 4,429 feet of core from the eight holes indicated in Table1. A total of 550 samples totaling 611 feet of core containing trace to significant mineralization from six of the holes (UDDH 1, 5, 9, 11, 12, and 13) has been selected, sawed, submitted for analyses and assays, and the results received and evaluated. Analyses are pending from 228 samples from 385 feet of core in UDDH 3. UDDH 4 has been logged, but sample intervals have not been selected.
ALS Chemex (Chemex) did the analyses and assays at its laboratory in North Vancouver, British Columbia. Sample preparation, analyses, and assays were done as requested by Behre Dolbear using Chemex's standard protocols. Gold was determined by fire assay with an atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) finish. All samples were also analyzed for a 34-element suite of major and potentially significant trace elements using an aqua regia digestion and an emission spectrographic scan. Chemex's quality control-quality assurance system complies with the requirements of the international standards ISO 90001:2000 and ISO17025:1999.
The Pennsylvanian Callville Limestone is the host of the mineralization in the holes logged by Behre Dolbear at the Deer Trail Mine. Behre Dolbear has logged over 4,400 feet of core that traverses the various lithologies of the upper +700 feet of that formation. This detailed logging has resulted in the recognition of ten previously unrecognized informal members and/or other subdivisions that will enable future work to place the mineralized horizons in the vicinity of the mine into stratigraphic perspective.
The mineralization in the Callville Limestone typically consists of stratabound narrow conformable bands of semi-massive to massive sulfides separated by relatively long intervals of weakly mineralized to barren rock. Ore minerals include sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, and tetrahedrite-tennantite. Where the significantly mineralized zones are thicker, the mineralized bands are closer together.
Based on the analytical results received to date, Behre Dolbear combined 33 continuous assay intervals from six holes into gross assay intervals ranging from 2.3 feet to 95 feet in length, uncorrected to true stratigraphic width.
Intervals within the gross intervals were combined into 113 detailed intervals based on their grades.
The best intervals based on thickness and grades in multiple metals in the six holes from which analyses have been received are listed in Table 2.
Table 2 shows that significant mineralization in most of the holes is confined to relatively narrow intervals ranging from 1.0 feet to 10.6 feet. The thickest intercept with significant mineralization is in UDDH 12 at 55.2 feet. The intervals are uncorrected for the true widths of the intercepts and will all be thinner than stated, some possibly as much as fifty percent thinner. Overall, silver contributes the most value of the metals in Table 2 with zinc second and gold, copper, and lead contributing subordinate values. In some of the intervals, the silver and gold are high but the base metals are low. Copper contributes more value than zinc in some of these intervals. Only one of the intervals (UDDH 11 at 105.0 to 110.6 feet) has high values in all of the metals.
The highest gold and silver values are in UDDH 1 (5.273 ppm Au=0.167oz/t Au; 366.9 ppm Ag= 10.71 oz/t Ag), and UDDH 11 (4.564 ppm Au= 0.133 oz/t Au; 585.1 ppm Ag= 17.08oz/t Ag).

There is potential for an economic deposit at the Deer Trail Mine if the metals occur together in significant grades and in widths (generally greater than 10 feet) that are adequate for mining. Additional work is required to determine if those conditions exist. Before additional drilling is done, the results of the logging, analyses, and observations by Behre Dolbear should be combined with the data and results from previous work to develop a three-dimensional model of the deposit. Development of that model will require data from surface and underground mapping, previous mining, and drilling from this and previous campaigns. All of this data on lithologies, structures, mineralization, and alteration must be put together on maps and cross sections to build the model.
Based on that model, the geometry (true widths and lateral extents) and grades of the mineralization as currently known will be indicated and decisions can be made if additional drilling has the potential to define economically mineable mineralization. It has not been determined if there is adequate data available from previous work to construct a good model."
In November 2006, Deer Trail Mining Company modified and expanded the agreement with Behre Dolbear and Company (USA), Inc. for geological services at Unico's Deer Trail Mine. The new agreement and work order adds several new areas of consulting that will fall under Behre Dolbear's scope of services on the Deer Trail project. Under these new revisions Behre Dolbear will assemble all the available data relating to the locations, volumes, and grades of the tailings that Deer Trail intends to process through the Project's mill.
