QUOTE: “Discovery raises new questions about the amount of plastic waste permeating the air, water, and soil virtually everywhere on Earth.”
Plastic was the furthest thing from Gregory Weatherbee’s mind when he began analyzing rainwater samples collected from the Rocky Mountains.“I guess I expected to see mostly soil and mineral particles,” said the US Geologic Survey researcher. Instead, he found multicolored microscopic plastic fibers.
The discovery, published in a recent study titled “It is raining plastic”, is raising new questions about the amount of plastic waste permeating the air, water, and soil virtually everywhere on Earth.
“I think the most important result that we can share with the American public is that there’s more plastic out there than meets the eye,” said Weatherbee. “It’s in the rain, it’s in the snow. It’s a part of our environment now.”
Rainwater samples collected across Colorado and analyzed under a microscope contained a rainbow of plastic fibers, as well as beads and shards. The findings shocked Weatherbee, who had been collecting the samples in order to study nitrogen pollution. “My results are purely accidental,” he said, though they are consistent with another recent study that found microplastics in France’s Pyrenees Mountains, suggesting that plastic particles could travel with the wind for hundreds, if not thousands, of kilometers. Other studies have turned up microplastics in the deepest reaches of the ocean, in UK lakes and rivers and in US groundwater.
A major contributor is trash, said Sherri Mason, a microplastics researcher and sustainability coordinator at Penn State Behrend. More than 90% of plastic waste isn’t recycled, and as it slowly degrades it breaks into smaller and smaller pieces. “Plastic fibers also break off your clothes every time you wash them,” Mason said, and plastic particles are byproducts of a variety of industrial processes.
It’s impossible to trace the tiny pieces back to their sources, Mason said, but almost anything that’s made of plastic could be shedding particles into the atmosphere. “And then those particles get incorporated into water droplets when it rains,” she added, then wash into rivers, lakes, bays and oceans and filter into groundwater sources.
Though scientists have been studying plastic pollution in the ocean for more than a decade, they can only account for 1% of it. Researchers know even less about the amount of plastic in freshwater and in the air, said Stefan Krause at the University of Birmingham. “We haven’t really started quantifying it,” he said.
Another unknown is whether it would be theoretically possible to flush all plastic out of the natural world, and how long that might take. “Even if we waved a magic wand and stopped using plastic, it’s unclear how long plastic would continue to circulate through our rivers waters systems,” he said. “Based on what we do know about plastic found in deep sources of groundwater, and accumulated in rivers, I would guess centuries.”
Animals and humans consume microplastics via water and food, and we likely breathe in micro- and nanoplastic particles in the air, though scientists have yet to understand the health effects. Microplastics can also attract and attach to heavy metals like mercury and other hazardous chemicals, as well as toxic bacteria. “Plastic particles from furniture and carpets could contain flame retardants that are toxic to humans,” Krause said.
Because we are all are exposed to hundreds of synthetic chemicals as soon as we’re born, it’s difficult to say how much longer we’d live if we weren’t exposed, said Mason. “We may never understand all the linkages between plastics and health.”
“But we know enough to say that breathing plastic probably isn’t good, and we should start thinking about dramatically reducing our dependence on plastic,” she said.“ END QUOTE.

“A powerful typhoon left at least 30 people dead in China, after a landslide backed up a river that broke through debris and inundated homes, state media reported on Sunday.
Another 20 people remained missing, the official Xinhua News Agency said, and more than a million people were evacuated, state broadcaster CCTV has reported.
Typhoon Lekima made landfall early on Saturday in the eastern province of Zhejiang with maximum winds of 116mph (187km/h), although it had weakened from its earlier designation as a super typhoon, the official Xinhua news agency reported.
The deaths occurred in Yongjia county on the outskirts of Wenzhou, a major port city. The river blocked by a landslide rose to a level of 10m (30ft) within 10 minutes, trapping 120 villagers, Xinhua said. THOUSANDS of flights were cancelled in eastern China, according to the country’s aviation regulator, with most flights into and out of Shanghai’s two main airports called off on Saturday afternoon, their websites showed.
China’s weather bureau on Saturday issued an orange alert – its second highest – after posting a red alert on Friday, when the storm forced flight cancellations in Taiwan and shut markets and businesses on the island.
The deadly landslide occurred about 80 miles (129km) north of the coastal city of Wenzhou, when a natural dam collapsed in an area deluged with 160mm (6.3 in) of rain within three hours, CCTV reported.
The storm was moving northward at 9mph (15km/h) and was gradually weakening, Xinhua reported, citing the weather bureau. High winds and heavy rains battered the financial hub of Shanghai on Saturday afternoon, and Shanghai Disneyland was shut for the day.
Nearly 200 hundred trains through the city of Jinan in Shandong province had been suspended until Monday, Xinhua reported.
More than 250,000 residents in Shanghai and 800,000 in Zhejiang province had been evacuated due to the typhoon, and 2.72m households in Zhejiang had power blackouts as strong wind and rain downed electricity transmission lines, state media reported.
About 200 houses in six cities in Zhejiang had collapsed, and 66,300ha (163,830 acres) of farmland had been destroyed, CCTV said.
The storm was predicted to reach Jiangsu province by early Sunday and veer over the Yellow Sea before continuing north and making landfall again in Shandong province, CCTV said.
Coastal businesses in Zhejiang were shut and the emergency management ministy warned of potential risk of fire, explosions and toxic gas leaks at chemical parks and oil refineries.
Lekima, downgraded to a tropical storm, was heading slowly north along China’s east coast on Sunday morning. End quote

Veggie options no longer vie for a dusty corner of the menu in fast-food chains. Now they are jockeying to appeal to climate-conscious young people. Plant-based choices are nearly indistinguishable from their meat counterparts.
“Early indications are that demand for plant-based proteins will continue to grow,” said Tony Weisman, chief marketing officer with Dunkin’ US. He said the company intended to roll out its new Beyond Sausage sandwich nationally soon.

“Given the importance of environmental sustainability among consumers, and especially younger consumers, indications are that demand for plant-based meats will continue to increase as time goes on,” he added.
Two-thirds of Gen Z believe the climate crisis “demands urgent action”, according to the Harvard Public Opinion Project. Given the enormous environmental impact of industrialized meat, companies like Impossible Foods want to drive it into obsolescence. But whether health-conscious young people will come out in droves for plant-based fast food remains to be seen.

“The Trump administration has told companies not to warn customers about products that contain glyphosate, a decision targeted at a California regulation that requires labels to warn consumers that the Roundup ingredient is potentially cancer-causing.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says it will no longer approve labels warning glyphosate is known to cause cancer. The chemical, marketed as a weed killer by Monsanto under the brand Roundup, is currently the focus of lawsuits from thousands of consumers alleging it caused their cancers.
Such labels are "irresponsible," EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler said in a statement. He cited the EPA's conclusions that the chemical doesn't represent a cancer risk. The decision from the EPA highlights the growing debate over the safety of glyphosate, with scientific research often reaching contradictory conclusions. The World Health Organization's cancer agency has said that the chemical is "possibly carcinogenic to humans," yet on the other side of the debate are studies that refute reports of glyphosate's risks, such as a long-term study of agricultural workers that didn't find a link between Roundup and cancer. Since Bayer bought Roundup maker Monsanto in June 2018, the company has lost lost three high-profile court cases that alleged the chemical caused cancer. "It is critical that federal regulatory agencies like EPA relay to consumers accurate, scientific based information about risks that pesticides may pose to them," Wheeler said in the statement. "EPA's notification to glyphosate registrants is an important step to ensuring the information shared with the public on a federal pesticide label is correct and not misleading."

“NYT: Climate Change Threatens World’s Food Supply, UN Warns”
“The world’s land and water resources are being exploited at “unprecedented rates,” a new United Nations report warns, which combined with climate change is putting dire pressure on the ability of humanity to feed itself.
The report, prepared by more than 100 experts from 52 countries and released in summary form in Geneva on Thursday, found that the window to address the threat is closing rapidly. A half-billion people already live in places turning into desert, and soil is being lost between 10 and 100 times faster than it is forming, according to the report.
Climate change will make those threats even worse, as floods, drought, storms and other types of extreme weather threaten to disrupt, and over time shrink, the global food supply. Already, more than 10 percent of the world’s population remains undernourished, and some authors of the report warned in interviews that food shortages could lead to an increase in cross-border migration.
A particular danger is that food crises could develop on several continents at once, said Cynthia Rosenzweig, a senior research scientist at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies and one of the lead authors of the report. “The potential risk of multi-breadbasket failure is increasing,” she said. “All of these things are happening at the same time.
*************************************************
( SCIENTISTS RECOMMEND PLANT-BASED SOYBEAN FOOD DIET TO SAVE GLOBAL FOOD CRISIS! )
(( YANGLIN SOYBEAN GROUP WILL HELP SAVE WORLDWIDE MIGRATION FROM LACK OF FOOD! ))
The report also offered a measure of hope, laying out pathways to addressing the looming food crisis, though they would require a major re-evaluation of land use and agriculture worldwide as well as consumer behavior. Proposals include increasing the productivity of land, wasting less food and persuading more people to shift their diets away from cattle and other types of meat.
**************************************************
“One of the important findings of our work is that there are a lot of actions that we can take now. They’re available to us,” Dr. Rosenzweig said. “But what some of these solutions do require is attention, financial support, enabling environments.”
The summary was released Thursday by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, an international group of scientists convened by the United Nations that pulls together a wide range of existing research to help governments understand climate change and make policy decisions. The I.P.C.C. is writing a series of climate reports, including one last year on the disastrous consequences if the planet’s temperature rises just 1.5 degrees Celsius above its preindustrial levels, as well as an upcoming report on the state of the world’s oceans.
((( MASSIVE MIGRATION OF IMMIGRANTS WILL EXPLODE WORLDWIDE DUE TO LACK OF FOOD & WATER. )))
Some authors also suggested that food shortages are likely to affect poorer parts of the world far more than richer ones. That could increase a flow of immigration that is already redefining politics in North America, Europe and other parts of the world.
People’s lives will be affected by a massive pressure for migration,” said Pete Smith, a professor of plant and soil science at the University of Aberdeen and one of the report’s lead authors. “People don’t stay and die where they are. People migrate.”
KEY TAKEAWAY: Between 2010 and 2015 the number of migrants from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras showing up at the United States’ border with Mexico increased fivefold, coinciding with a dry period that left many with not enough food and was so unusual that scientists suggested it bears the signal of climate change. Barring action on a sweeping scale, the report said, climate change will accelerate the danger of severe food shortages. As a warming atmosphere intensifies the world’s droughts, flooding, heat waves, wildfires and other weather patterns, it is speeding up the rate of soil loss and land degradation, the report concludes.
Higher concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere — a greenhouse gas put there mainly by the burning of fossil fuels — will also reduce food’s nutritional quality, even as rising temperatures cut crop yields and harm livestock.
Those changes threaten to exceed the ability of the agriculture industry to adapt.
In some cases, the report says, a changing climate is boosting food production because, for example, warmer temperatures will mean greater yields of some crops at higher latitudes. But on the whole, the report finds that climate change is already hurting the availability of food because of decreased yields and lost land from erosion, desertification and rising seas, among other things.
Overall if emissions of greenhouse gases continue to rise, so will food costs, according to the report, affecting people around the world. You’re sort of reaching a breaking point with land itself and its ability to grow food and sustain us,” said Aditi Sen, a senior policy adviser on climate change at Oxfam America, an antipoverty advocacy organization.
In addition, the researchers said, even as climate change makes agriculture more difficult, agriculture itself is also exacerbating climate change.
The report said that activities such as draining wetlands — as has happened in Indonesia and Malaysia to create palm oil plantations, for example — is particularly damaging. When drained, peatlands, which store between 530 and 694 billion tons of carbon dioxide globally, release that carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is a major greenhouse gas, trapping the sun’s heat and warming the planet. Every 2.5 acres of peatlands release the carbon dioxide equivalent of burning 6,000 gallons of gasoline.
And the emissions of carbon dioxide continues long after the peatlands are drained. Of the five gigatons of greenhouse gas emissions that are released each year from deforestation and other land-use changes, “One gigaton comes from the ongoing degradation of peatlands that are already drained,” said Tim Searchinger, a senior fellow at the World Resources Institute, an environmental think tank, who is familiar with the report. (By comparison, the fossil fuel industry emitted about 37 gigatons of carbon dioxide last year, according to the institute.)“ End quote. — NEW YORK TIMES NEWS.

100% INSECT LOSS BY 2300 DUE TO TOXIC PESTICIDES!
( IMHO: HUMAN’S PRESENT DAY 6TH EXTINCTION won’t be too much further than that if we don’t change.
IMHO: 8 Billion people overpopulate a Planet Earth only able to support 2 Billion people. Dr. Carl Sagan warned in 1980 that POLLUTION or NUCLEAR WINTER would extinct us, & he’s proving right with BOTH NUCLEAR PROLIFERATION & POLLUTION OUT OF CONTROL at the same time already RIGHT NOW. )
Quote: “Agriculture is 48X more toxic than 25 years ago. Blame pesticide neonics.”
“More than 50 years ago, Rachel Carson warned of a “silent spring”, the songs of robins and wood thrush silenced by toxic pesticides such as DDT. Today, there is a new pesticide specter: a class of insecticides called neonicotinoids. For years, scientists have been raising the alarm about these bug killers, but a new study reveals a more complete picture of the threat they pose to insect life.
First commercialized in the 1990s, neonicotinoids, or neonics for short, are now the most widely used insecticides in the world. They’re used on over 140 crops, from apples and almonds to spinach and rice. Chemically similar to nicotine, they kill insects by attacking their nerve cells.
Neonics were pitched as an answer to pests’ increasing resistance to the reigning insecticides. But in an effort to more effectively kill pests, we created an explosion in the toxicity of agriculture not just for unwanted bugs but for the honeybees, ladybugs, beetles and the vast abundance of other insects that sustain life on Earth.
What we now know is that neonics are not only considerably more toxic to insects than other insecticides, they are far more persistent in the environment. While others break down within hours or days, neonics can remain in soils, plants and waterways for months to years, killing insects long after they’re applied and creating a compounding toxic burden.
Neonics can remain in soils, plants and waterways for months to years, killing insects long after they're applied
The new study, published in the science journal PLOS One, designed a way to quantify this persistence and combine it with data on the toxicity and total pounds used of neonics and other insecticides. For the first time, we have a time-lapse of impact: we can compare year-to-year changes in the toxicity of US agriculture for insects. The results? Since neonics were first introduced 25 years ago, US agriculture has become 48 times more toxic to insect life, and neonics are responsible for 92% of that surge in toxicity.
Looking at this toxic time-lapse, another interesting detail emerges: there’s a dramatic increase in the toxic burden of US agriculture for insects starting in the mid-2000s. That’s when beekeepers began reporting significant losses of their hives. It’s also when the pesticide companies that manufacture neonics, Bayer and Syngenta, found a lucrative new use for these chemicals: coating the seeds of crops like corn and soy that are grown on millions of acres across the country. These seed coatings now account for the vast majority of neonic use in the US.
Neonics are “systemic”, meaning they are water soluble and therefore taken up by the plant itself, making its nectar, pollen, and fruit – all of it – toxic. Only about 5% of a seed coating is absorbed by the plant, the remainder stays in the soil and can end up in rivers, lakes and drinking water with its runoff causing harm to wildlife and, as emerging evidence shows, to people.
This study comes on the heels of the first analysis of global insect populations, which found 40% of species face extinction, with near total insect loss possible by century’s end, driven in part by pesticides, with neonics a particular concern.
An analysis of global insect populations found 40% of species face extinction, with near total insect loss possible by century's end
For all of this harm, farmers get few, if any, benefits from neonic seed coatings. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, they provide “little or no overall benefits to soybean production”, though nearly half of soybean seeds in the US are treated. Similar analyses have found the same for corn, yet up to 100% of US corn seeds are treated.
All this risk without reward has led some regulators to take action. The European Union voted to ban the worst neonics in 2018. But the US government has so far failed to act. Chemical company lobbying can explain much of this inaction. Bayer, maker of the most widely used neonics, spent an estimated $4.3m lobbying in the US on behalf of its agricultural division in 2017.
Not only has the EPA stalled scientific review of neonics, last year, the Fish and Wildlife Service reversed an Obama-era ban on use of these dangerous insecticides in wildlife refuges. Congress could change this. Democratic representative Earl Blumenauer’s Saving America’s Pollinators Act would ban neonicotinoids and other systemic, pollinator-toxic insecticides. The bill has 56 co-sponsors, but faces a major hurdle clearing the House agriculture committee given that the chairman representative, Collin Peterson, a Democrat from Minnesota, counts Bayer and the pesticide industry’s trade association, Croplife America, among his top contributors.
Beyond a ban, we need a concerted effort to transition US agriculture away from dependence on pesticides and toward ecological methods of pest control. We already know how to do this. Research shows that organic farms support up to 50% more pollinating species and help other beneficial insects flourish. And by eliminating neonics and some 900 other active pesticide ingredients, they protect human health, too.
More than five decades ago, Rachel Carson warned that the war we are waging against nature with toxic pesticides is inevitably a war against ourselves. That is as true today as it was then. For the sake of the birds and bees – and all of us – this war must end.” End quote
IMHO: (( READ RACHEL CARSON’S 1962 BOOK ‘SILENT SPRING’! A book about the unintended consequences of pesticide use, Silent Spring was an unlikely best seller when it was published in 1962, prompting a revolution in environmental consciousness whose repercussions are still being felt decades later. Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring, the “iconic piece of literature” that changed the way we think of the world! ))

Opening Remarks - (with translation, paragraph by paragraph)
(( MANDARIN LANGUAGE OMITTED DUE TO ALL QUESTION MARKS SYMBOLS REPRESENTED HERE. ))
Good morning and welcome to our third quarter 2008 earnings conference call. On the call today, I will give you a brief update on the progress we are making to become one of China's top soybean companies. Our CFO, Mr. Bode Xu, will provide you with a review of our financial performance for the quarter and will also discuss the outlook for the remainder of 2008. Afterward, we will open the call for your questions.
I am very pleased to report a strong third quarter 2008 financial results, all of the product lines performed above our expectations. Even though third quarter usually represents the trough for our business, the results reflect the continued strong demand for our soybean products and value-added products, and our increased production volume. Our brand recognition continues to improve and our distribution channels are expanding into new untapped markets in China.
Our financial position continues to be strong. With the cash on our balance sheet and our consistent cash flow generation, we are in the position of strength at a time when other smaller companies are in need of access to capital to gain scale.
The recent 586 billion dollars stimulus package by the Chinese government came just in time, showing the government’s determination to boost domestic demand and revive rural china’s economy. And a few days ago officials from China’s central bank expressed that agriculture will be one key area of investment under this package, which also will put motivational effect on the development of soybean processing industry. This, combined with the ever-strong demand for soybean products on China’s market, offers great potentials for Yanglin’s future.
Thank you. I will now turn the call over to Bode.
Financial Review - Bode
Thank you, Mr. Liu. I will now review our financial results for the quarter and the progress that we are making at Yanglin.
During the third quarter we generated a sales revenue of $48.7 million, an increase of 112% year-over-year compared to $23.0 million for the three months ended September 30, 2007. Revenues for soybean meal, soybean oil and salad oil continue to experience significant year-over-year growth at 156.4%, 46% and 86.7%, respectively.
In the third quarter of 2008, sales of soybean meal, soybean oil and salad oil were $32.5 million, $11.2 million, and $5.0 million, accounting for 66.7%, 23% and 10.3% of total revenue, respectively.
Gross profit for 2008 third quarter was $3.4 million, as compared to $1.5 million for the same quarter last year, reflecting a 126% year-over-year increase.
Gross margin, as a percent of total revenue, was 7.1% for the third quarter of 2008. This percentage compares favorably to the gross margin of 5.8% achieved in the second quarter of 2008 and the 6.6% in the year-ago quarter.
Gross margin for soybean meal increased to 8.1% in the third quarter of 2008 from 4.4% in the year-ago quarter in 2007. Gross margin for soybean oil was 3.9% the same quarter this year from 8.9% third quarter in 2007. Gross margin of salad oil was 7.6% in this quarter of 2008 from 10.3% during the third quarter in 2007. The reason for the lower gross margins in soybean oil and salad oil was mainly the higher raw material costs (soybean) and delayed and unmatched price hike on these products. However, during the third quarter, we have successfully increased our soybean meal price and passed out the effect of the higher costs to the customers. We continue to improve our product mix and focus on higher margin product sales.
Total operating expenses for the three months ended September 30, 2008 increased to $567,739, from $245,420 in the same period last year. Selling expenses for 2008 third quarter were $ 61,756 as compared to $ 29,386 in the 2007 third quarter. General and administrative expenses for the 2008 third quarter were $505,983, as compared to $216,034 in the year-ago quarter. The increase of G&A expenses was mainly related to increased compliance costs associated with a US publicly listed company and the Sarbanes-Oxley Act compliance project with Ernst & Young. The SOX 404 project is progressing well and we expect to finish it by the end of the year. Total SG&A expenses accounted for 1.2% of total revenue in 2008 third quarter, as compared to 1.0% in the same period of 2007.
Interest expenses for the third quarter of 2008 amounted to $195,075, compared with $57,064 for the three months ended September 30, 2007. The increase was primarily attributable to additional short-term bank borrowings with a higher interest rate.
Our net income for the third quarter of 2008 totaled $2.70 million, or $0.07 per diluted share, compared to net income of $1.23 million, or $0.06 per diluted share in the same period one year ago. As noted in our last quarter’s financial results, the disparity between the growth in net income and that of the diluted EPS is because of the large increase in the weighted average number of common stocks for the purpose of calculating EPS on fully diluted basis. The greater number of shares outstanding was caused by the issuance of a large number of preferred stocks and warrants in the financing closed in October 2007.
As a key leading enterprise in the agriculture industry recognized by the Chinese government, we continue to enjoy a tax holiday for the remainder of 2008. As the new calendar year approaches, a review process is required to determine the Company’s tax-exempt status. The current corporate income tax rate in China is 25%. As a leading soybean product processor in China and because soybean product market is highly protected by Chinese government, Yanglin expects to continue to receive this favorable tax treatment from the government.
The Company's balance sheet at September 30, 2008 included cash and cash equivalents of $20.1 million, compared with $9.2 million at December 31, 2007. Due to the nature of our business, the receivables and payables are typically minimal. Total short-term loan was reduced from $12.3 million on December 31st, 2007 to $4.4 million on September 30th, 2008. The Company has net working capital of $31.8 million versus $20.2 million at December 31, 2007. Total shareholders' equity increased to $70.8 million as compared to $54.7 million on December 31, 2007.
As we are selling mostly on cash basis with ignorable accounts receivables, and customers usually pay in advance to secure supply from us, our cash flow status has always been healthy. In the third quarter, net cash provided by operating activities reached $19.8 million.
************************************
Business Outlook
I would now spend a few minutes discussing our business outlook for the remainder of 2008.
Given the strong performance of the first nine months of 2008, we are on track to exceed our full year revenue guidance US$240 million and net income guidance US$14 million.
((( THAT’S JUST ABOUT ONE QUARTER OF A BILLION DOLLARS IN REVENUES FOR AN EMERGING MARKETS YOUNG START-UP! —AND PRE-‘GREAT RECESSION’ GLOBAL CHART CLIFF TOO!! )))
These targets are based on the Company's current views on the operating and market conditions, which are subject to change. We will provide our 2009 guidance when we report our full year 2008 results.

Once again, we thank you for your interest and support for Yanglin Soybean. Mr. Liu and I will be happy to take your questions.

“There's been "a deterioration in trust and communication" between Washington and Beijing, says Frank Lavin, U.S. ambassador to Singapore from 2001 to 2005.
After President Donald Trump's threat to slap 10% tariff on $300 billion of Chinese goods, it's unlikely that the U.S. and China will reach a trade deal this year, says Lavin. The latest escalation in tensions between the U.S. and China has reduced the chances that both sides could reach a trade deal this year, a former American diplomat said on Monday.
Negotiations between Washington and Beijing appeared to be progressing well until U.S. President Donald Trump shocked markets in May by hiking tariffs from 10% to 25% on $200 billion of Chinese goods. Talks subsequently broke down and had resumed last week before Trump again threatened to slap 10% tariffs on $300 billion of Chinese goods starting Sept. 1.
Trump's latest actions are "a step away from a solution," said Frank Lavin, U.S. ambassador to Singapore from 2001 to 2005. He added that it's "unlikely" both sides would reach a deal by the end of this year. "This tariffs war has gone on for over a year, so you see a deterioration in environment, a deterioration in trust and communication,".”

Monsanto’s Roundup Weedkiller’s LEUKEMIA KILLED AT AGE 12.
What a horrific tragedy.
Quote:
“Soccer was a huge passion in Oliver Strong’s young life. Right up to his death from acute myeloid leukemia in June 2015 at the age of 12, he was a standout athlete and goalkeeper, a healthy, vibrant and popular boy with a zest for living that inspired his teammates, friends and family.
So when Oliver died suddenly at a Miami children’s hospital, just 36 hours after doctors first diagnosed the disease, his parents Simon and Vilma started looking for answers. What they found was disturbing.
Cases of pediatric cancer in the United States surged by almost 50% from 1975 to 2015, according to alarming but under-reported statistics by the National Cancer Institute, and in 2018 up to 16,000 children from birth to age 19 will have received a new diagnosis.
Yet what really elevated the disquiet of Oliver’s parents was increasing concern over the role that carcinogenic environmental toxicants, including industrial waste and pollutants, were believed to be playing in the rise of childhood cancer.
“There’s almost an unspoken scientific consensus that it’s always environmental,” said Simon Strong, who with his wife set up Oliver Forever Strong – a foundation in their son’s memory.
Oliver’s Forever Strong has now teamed up for an ambitious research study with scientists at the Texas Children’s Hospital, home to the nation’s largest pediatric cancer center, and the Baylor College of Medicine.
Through the website thereasonswhy.us, the study will harness social media to help collate information from a wide geographical spread. Families with their own experiences of childhood cancers will sign up and receive a questionnaire in the coming months seeking information including the manifestation and progression of their cancers as well as demographics.
Dr Michael Scheurer, director of the childhood cancer epidemiology and prevention program at Texas Children’s Hospital, said: “This research … will allow families who might not live near one of the existing study centers to participate as they are comfortable.
“We realize individuals won’t know if they’ve been exposed to a certain chemical or specific agent so we try to gather an overview of their environment, where have they lived over the course of time, when the child was conceived, during mom’s pregnancy, during early childhood, up to the point they developed their cancer. Are those residences located near Superfund sites, or in areas with high levels of air pollution or water contaminants?
“In the end, if we see that several kinds of cancers share some risk factors that’s important information, but we want to start with a very homogeneous group of cancers and start looking into these patients first. Signposts will pop up along the way.”
Environmental factors
Strong says the hope is to eventually build a more detailed picture of the correlation between toxicants and childhood cancer.
“I, like most people, thought it’s just bad luck and dodgy genes, and you discover we’re quietly encouraged to think that,” he said. “But I found a paper published by the World Health Organization … it’s always triggered by external agents that damage our DNA and the body’s ability to deal with that damage.”
In his own son’s case, Strong admits to second guessing events in the months and weeks leading up to Oliver’s death, which came after a week of headaches.
Strong says he has no idea if it was any kind of factor in his son’s death but that he regrets using Roundup on their patio to get rid of weeds. “Oliver’s brother Edward said they both hated the smell of that stuff. On one occasion I looked at the container and saw glyphosate, and looked that up and saw it was declared a probable human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.
“And we all know now about the jury verdicts regarding glyphosate [three juries in the US have awarded damages linking the weed killer to cancer; Bayer its manufacturer insists it is safe and is appealing.
US playgrounds: fears grow over health risks from rubber particles.
Strong said someone had also told him about artificial turf and “the role it might be having in an apparently high level of childhood cancer”.
He said: “Look at the turf and the black spongy stuff that’s in it. It’s mostly diced up, used vehicle tires, it’s petrochemical stuff. There are strict regulations for the disposition of full vehicle tires, but nothing when it comes to dicing them up and using them as a spongy surface for athletes to play on.
“So I’d been exposing Oliver to Roundup, he’d been playing for six months as a goalkeeper on this stuff. I have no clue whether either contributed, but he was exposed to these two things and if I’d known better, I would have not exposed him.”
On a wider scale, Strong started looking at incidences and clusters of childhood cancer nationwide, and possible environmental factors behind them, which led to the foundation launching the thereasonswhy.us project.
“The International Agency for Research on Cancer’s raison d’etre is studying carcinogens in our environment, but in our health industry the focus is purely on detection, diagnosis and treatment, because that’s where the money is … and not focusing on prevention,” he said.
***************************************************************
Cancer research funding cut by government
Privately-funded research will likely increase in importance as federal funding falls for tackling pediatric cancer, the leading cause of death in the US for children past infancy.
In February, Donald Trump announced a $500m appropriation over 10 years, compared to a seven-year, $1.8bn investment under Barack Obama. The president has also slashed environmental protections that Strong says has contributed to the “emasculation” of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
There are tens of thousands of synthetic chemicals registered by the EPA but only a small proportion tested for toxicity, Strong says. “It’s in our foods, packaging and clothing, building materials, cleaning products, cosmetics, toys and baby bottles. And even less is known about the effects of simultaneous exposure to multiple chemicals.
*************************************************
“There are hundreds of communities across the country where people are raising their voices. In Otsego, Michigan, they had an extremely high number of pediatric cancer cases and managed to get the EPA to conduct air, water and soil studies. In most communities it relates to pollution as a result of toxic waste from active or defunct manufacturing plants of one kind or another, as well as run-off nutrients from farming operations.
“There’s a similar story in Franklin, Indiana. You have all these communities which are increasingly active on social media, coming into contact with each other and saying, ‘Hey, you too?’ Previously they were operating as pockets and wouldn’t have heard of each other. That’s where we are stepping in. We’re going to be bringing together many of those communities.”
Ultimately, Strong hopes to enlist thousands of families for the study, with the first 200 signed up by the middle of the summer. The questionnaire should be ready for distribution before the end of the year, and he said he had already signed up participants from almost half of the 50 states plus some in South America.
“Oliver was a compassionate, empathetic soul with a strong sense of justice, so I’d like to think we are doing this in his spirit, and at the same time it’s important for me that this not be about Oliver, it’s about all families who are affected by childhood cancer,” he said.
“We want society to be invested not in sickness but in health … celebrating young people preserving their health because we live in an environment with safer water, safer air and safer products.” End quote.

NON-GMO ORGANIC APPLES FIGHT CANCERS IN YOUR GUT!
TOXIC GMO APPLES HAVE THE WORST AMOUNT OF POISON PESTICIDES!
NON-GMO ORGANIC APPLES HAVE THE BEST NUTRITION FREE OF TOXIC POISON PESTICIDES!!
Quote: “Study finds organic apples have more diverse and balanced bacterial community.”
Quote: “100 MILLION bacteria a day keep the doctor away, apple research suggests.”
Quote: “The impact of an apple a day in keeping the doctor away may be partly down to the beneficial bacteria it carries and their subsequent colonisation of your gut, according to scientists.
A study has found that a typical apple carries more than 100m bacteria. Some of these microbes are important in maintaining a healthy gut environment, or microbiome, says Prof Gabriele Berg from Graz University of Technology, Austria, one of the authors of the research.
“The bacteria, fungi and viruses in our food transiently colonise our gut,” she said. “Cooking kills most of these, so raw fruit and veg are particularly important sources of gut microbes.”
The researchers compared the bacteria in shop-bought apples with those in visually matched organic ones. The apple’s stem, peel, flesh, seeds and calyx – the straggly bit at the bottom where the flower used to be – were all analysed separately.
Is organic food healthier?
Although organic and conventional apples were occupied by similar numbers of bacteria, the researchers found organic apples harboured a more diverse and balanced bacterial community, which they said could make them healthier and tastier than conventional apples.
Variety in the microbiome is thought to be key to a healthy gut and the researchers said there appeared to be more microbial diversity in organic apples.
“Freshly harvested, organically managed apples harbour a significantly more diverse, more even and distinct bacterial community, compared to conventional ones,” explained Berg. “This variety and balance would be expected to limit overgrowth of any one species, and previous studies have reported a negative correlation between human pathogen abundance and microbiome diversity of fresh produce.” In other words, the more varied your diet, the fewer harmful bacteria are found.
The research may also vindicate the people who claim to be able to taste the difference between organic and ordinary produce, say the researchers. A microbe known as methylobacterium, which is known to boost strawberry-flavoured compounds, was significantly more abundant in organic apples, Berg said.
Birgit Wassermann, also at Graz University of Technology and the lead author of the study, said the next step would be “to confirm to what extent diversity in the food microbiome translates to gut microbial diversity and improved health outcomes”.
She also suggested that this information might one day appear on supermarket food labels. “The microbiome and antioxidant profiles of fresh produce may one day become standard nutritional information, displayed alongside macronutrients, vitamins and minerals to guide consumers,” she added.” End quote.

Quote: ”Neurotoxins on your kid's broccoli: life under Trump.”
Quote: “In the choice between big chemical corporations and ordinary citizens, the Environmental Protection Agency has made clear where its allegiances lie.”
Quote: “How much is your child’s health worth? The answer coming from the leadership of the US Environmental Protection Agency is: not that much.
The EPA administrator, Andrew Wheeler, this week confirmed what many Americans already know: when the Trump administration weighs the competing interests of corporate profits versus public health, the corporations win, hands down.
Wheeler announced Thursday that despite what independent scientists say is a wealth of evidence tying the popular insecticide known as chlorpyrifos to neurodevelopmental damage in children, the pesticide should continue to be applied by farmers to foods that children regularly consume, including apples, grapes, broccoli and cherries. That decision comes even though residues of the chemical in food and water are among the exposures known by scientists to contribute to a range of cognitive problems in kids, such as a reduced IQ. Studies have shown that even pregnant women’s exposure can have an impact on their children.
Trump administration won't ban pesticide tied to childhood brain damage
Wheeler said the data showing harm was not complete or “reliable”, and the agency would continue to monitor the issue for at least three more years.
That position contradicts the EPA’s stance four years ago, when it said that it could no longer back the safety of the insecticide in food and drinking water as is required under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA). The scientific evidence warranted a ban from agricultural use just as the chemical was banned from household use nearly two decades ago because of the known dangers, the agency found.
The move to ban chlorpyrifos from agricultural use was strongly opposed by the Dow Chemical Co, which has been selling chlorpyrifos products since 1965. But it wasn’t until early 2017 that the company found a sympathetic ear in Washington, when Donald Trump assumed the presidency. Dow and its chemical industry lobbyists wasted no time using their money and their messaging to lean on the new administration with a request to keep the profitable pesticide on the market. A $1m donation from Dow for the Trump inaugural fund didn’t hurt.
Dow and chemical industry lobbyists argued that chlorpyrifos was a “critical pest management tool” for farmers and said the science showing harm was insufficient to warrant a ban.
The talking points were adopted by the administration even as health and environmental advocates, including the American Academy for Pediatrics, warned that continued use of the chemical put our country’s future generations in danger. Developing fetuses, infants, children and pregnant women are at the most risk.
And if the science showing harm to children is not enough to warrant public outrage, there also is a wealth of scientific evidence showing that chlorpyrifos adversely affects many critically endangered animals.
Several states are already banning or moving to ban chlorpyrifos, including Hawaii and New York.
Litigation over the issue led a federal appeals court to order the EPA to issue a final ruling, which Wheeler did this week. And though the announcement came as no surprise to the scientists and health professionals who have been following the issue, it cemented for many a deep sense of foreboding about what the future holds when science is scorned for the sake of placating a corporate profit agenda.
“The economic and human health impacts are substantial and real,” Dr Leonardo Trasande, who directs the division of environmental pediatrics within the department of pediatrics at New York University’s Langone Health, told me. The EPA decision to continue to allow chlorpyrifos into American diets is “emblematic” of a broad dismissal of scientific evidence related to human health issues, in his view. Attacks on scientific norms are likely to continue unabated, he warned.
So here we are – with scientific concerns for the safety of our innocent and vulnerable children on one side and powerful, wealthy corporate players on the other. Our political and regulatory leaders have shown whose interests they value most.” End quote.

TOXIC GLYPHOSATE HERBICIDAL WARFARE WEAPONIZING GAZA WINDS!
“Following the advice of a contracted civilian agronomist, Israeli military spraying is conducted during key harvest periods, targeting spring and summer crops. Working with the private Israeli civilian aviation firm Chim-Nir, the army’s destruction of vegetation along the eastern perimeter is carried out in a continuous manner, using two aircrafts simultaneously, each equipped with a GPS system to enable precision.
The Ministry of Defense also confirmed that the Israeli military sprays a combination of three herbicides: Glyphosate, Oxyfluorfen (Oxygal) and Diuron (Diurex).
Glyphosate, formulated as ‘Roundup’, is the most widely-used herbicide in the world, leaving traces in soil, foodstuffs, air, and water, as well as human urine. Roundup is the flagship product of the Monsanto Company, a leading agricultural chemicals business that previously produced herbicides and defoliants used by the US military in Vietnam.
In March 2015, the World Health Organization’s Cancer Research Agency classified glyphosate as ‘probably carcinogenic to humans’.” End quote.

“Weaponising the wind.
Our analysis of several first-hand videos, collected in the field, reveals that aerial spraying by commercial crop-dusters flying on the Israeli side of the border mobilises the wind to carry the chemicals into the Gaza Strip, at damaging concentrations.
The videos support the testimonies of farmers that, prior to spraying, the Israeli military uses the smoke from a burning tire to confirm the westerly direction of the wind, thereby carrying the herbicides from Israel into Gaza.
Our investigation shows that each spray leaves behind a unique destructive signature. No two aerial sprays will have the same effect, nor can their damage be reasonably predicted by the army, since the location where the toxic chemicals land, and their respective concentrations, depend heavily on the direction and speed of the wind relative to the flight path of the aircraft.
This practice weaponises herbicide spraying as a belligerent act, designed to ‘enable optimal and continuous security operations’.
Farm warfare
In November 2016, in response to a Freedom of Information (FOI) request filed by the NGO Gisha, the Israeli Ministry of Defense confirmed that aerial herbicides are sprayed along the width of the perimeter of Gaza. Aerial spraying is conducted between the Erez crossing in the north and Kerem Shalom in the south, over an estimated area of 12,000 dunums (12 square kilometres).” End quote.

Trump EPA Won’t Ban Chlorpyrifos That Harms Kid’s Brains.
New York Times today:
“WASHINGTON — The Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday announced it would not ban a widely used pesticide associated with developmental disabilities and other health problems in children.
The product, sold under the commercial name Lorsban, has already been banned for household use but remains in widespread use by farmers for more than 50 fruit, nut, cereal and vegetable crops. The Obama administration decided to ban chlorpyrifos in 2015 after scientific studies produced by the E.P.A. showed the pesticide had the potential to damage brain development in children. But in 2017 Scott Pruitt, then the administrator of the E.P.A., reversed that prohibition, setting off a new round of legal challenges.
Patti Goldman, an attorney for Earthjustice, an environmental group that brought a legal challenge against the E.P.A.’s 2017 decision on behalf of farmworker organizations and others, criticized the decision. “By allowing chlorpyrifos to stay in our fruits and vegetables, Trump’s E.P.A. is breaking the law and neglecting the overwhelming scientific evidence that this pesticide harms children’s brains,” Ms. Goldman said in a statement.
A federal appeals court in April ordered the E.P.A. to make a final ruling on whether to ban chlorpyrifos by this month. Since then a number of states, including California and New York, have moved to prohibit its use.” End quote. NEW YORK TIMES QUOTED 7/18/2019.

EPA MALFEASANCE IS MORE THAN A CONFLICT OF INTEREST:
http://www.environmentalintegrity.org/trump-watch-epa/whos-running-trumps-epa/
”Former Industry Lobbyists and Representatives Hired to Run Trump’s EPA.”
Quote: “Although as a candidate, Donald Trump promised to “drain the swamp” and limit the influence of lobbyists over the federal government, his administration has done the opposite. Over the last two years, the Trump Administration has hired at least 164 former lobbyists in a wide variety of influential positions, according to an analysis by the nonprofit Center for Responsive Politics.
At the EPA, nearly half of the political appointees hired by the Trump Administration have had strong ties to industries regulated by the agency industry, according to research by the Associated Press. About a third of these EPA appointees – including the current acting administrator – formerly worked as registered lobbyists or lawyers for fossil fuel companies, chemical manufacturers, or other corporate clients.
Below is a partial list of former industry lobbyists and representatives picked to run EPA by the Trump Administration that have potential or real conflicts. The Administration has been pursuing a de-regulatory agenda that benefits many of these same industries by rolling back air and water pollution control regulations. This inverts the purpose of the agency, which is to protect the environment and public health, not industry profits. In the list below, links are provided to source documents.
Andrew Wheeler, Acting EPA Administrator. Formerly earned $741,000 annually as an attorney with Faegre Baker Daniels, a law and lobbying firm that represented several polluting industries, including the coal company Murray Energy. In March 2017, Wheeler attended a meeting between Murray’s chief executive, Robert Murray, and Trump’s Energy Secretary, Rick Perry, during which the coal magnate handed Perry a written roadmap for rolling back regulations on the coal industry, which the administration has largely followed. Other former lobbying clients of Wheeler’s that are regulated by EPA include a uranium mining company, Energy Fuels Resources; XCEL Energy, a public utility; Bear Head LNG Corp., a liquid natural gas export company; the Celanese Corp., a Texas-based chemical manufacturing company; International Paper; and Archer Daniels Midland.” Quoted: http://www.environmentalintegrity.org/trump-watch-epa/whos-running-trumps-epa/

QUOTED: “Sick Children Among Cancer Victims Suing Monsanto Over Roundup
A 12-year-old boy suffering from cancer is among the newest plaintiffs taking on Monsanto and its German owner Bayer AG in growing litigation over the safety of Roundup herbicides and Monsanto’s handling of scientific concerns about the products.
Lawyers for Jake Bellah were in court Monday in Lake County Superior Court in Lakeport, California arguing that Bellah’s young age and diagnosis of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) qualified him for “trial preference,” or a speedy trial. In their motion, lawyers for the Baum Hedlund law firm of Los Angeles asked for a trial that would begin before the end of this year, within 120 days after a judge’s order if their motion is granted.
Monsanto lawyers opposed the request, arguing that the company would need more time to prepare a defense given the unusual scientific issues of surrounding alleged causation of cancer in a child.
The four plaintiffs who have already had trials against Monsanto were all adults diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and all were victorious. Bellah would likely be the first case of a child with cancer to challenge Monsanto before a jury.
In May, a jury in Oakland, California ordered Monsanto to pay more than $2 billion in damages to Alberta and Alva Pilliod, a married couple who both suffer from NHL they blame on exposure to Roundup. That followed a verdict in March in which a San Francisco jury ordered Monsanto to pay roughly $80 million in damages to plaintiff Edwin Hardeman who also suffers from NHL. On July 15, the judge in that case reduced the award to $25 million. Last year jurors in state court in San Francisco ordered Monsanto to pay $289 million in damages to school groundskeeper Dewayne “Lee” Johnson, who has been diagnosed with a terminal type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The judge in that case lowered the total verdict to $78 million and the verdict is now on appeal.
Lawyers representing Bellah said the child was exposed to Monsanto’s glyphosate-based herbicide products repeatedly over many years as he played in his family’s yard and around their garden area where his father frequently sprayed the chemicals.
Bellah developed B-cell lymphoma and has been hospitalized and treated with chemotherapy and is currently in remission, according to Pedram Esfandiary, one of the family’s attorneys.
We’re looking forward to having more trials,” said Esfandiary. “It’s unfortunate that the victims include not only hardworking folks like Lee and the Pilliods but also people at the start of their lives. He is entitled to his day in court.”
A ruling on the Bellah request for a speedy trial is expected by the end of July.
Another lawsuit brought on behalf of a sick child was filed July 12 in Alameda County Superior Court in California, also by the Baum Hedlund firm.
In that case, the plaintiff is identified only as G.B. Bargas. Her father Richard Bargas is listed as a plaintiff individually and on behalf of his daughter. The child’s mother Ronza Bargas is also a plaintiff. The complaint alleges that the child was diagnosed with NHL as a result of exposure to Roundup.
The addition of children to the mass litigation comes as Bayer is exploring whether or not to try to settle the cases. The company’s shares have been battered by the repeated losses in court, and by the revelations of questionable Monsanto conduct with respect to scientific and public scrutiny of its products.
In his court ruling reducing the damages awarded in the Hardeman case, U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria said that Monsanto’s actions were “reprehensible.” He said evidence showed “Monsanto employees crassly attempting to combat, undermine or explain away challenges to Roundup’s safety.”
He said the company showed a “lack of concern about the risk that its product might be carcinogenic.”

Judge Cuts Amount Monsanto Owner Bayer Owes Cancer Victim
A federal judge has slashed the punitive damages a jury ordered Monsanto to pay to cancer victim Edwin Hardeman from $75 million to $20 million, despite the judge’s description of Monsanto’s conduct surrounding questions about the safety of its Roundup herbicide as “reprehensible.”
U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria ruled Monday that the jury’s decision in the Hardeman case to award punitive damages of $75 million was “constitutionally impermissible.” By lowering it to $20 million, combined with the compensatory damages awarded by the jury, the total the agrochemical company owes Hardeman is $25,267,634.10, the judge said. The original verdict handed down by the six-member jury was $80 million.
Judge Chhabria had many harsh words for Monsanto, which was purchased last year by Bayer AG. He wrote in his ruling that the “evidence presented at trial about Monsanto’s behavior betrayed a lack of concern about the risk that its product might be carcinogenic.”
“Despite years of colorable claims in the scientific community that Roundup causes NHL, Monsanto presented minimal evidence suggesting that it was interested in getting to the bottom of those claims… While Monsanto repeatedly intones that it stands by the safety of its product, the evidence at trial painted the picture of a company focused on attacking or undermining the people who raised concerns, to the exclusion of being an objective arbiter of Roundup’s safety,” Judge Chhabria said in his ruling.
“For example, while the jury was shown emails of Monsanto employees crassly attempting to combat, undermine or explain away challenges to Roundup’s safety, not once was it shown an email suggesting that Monsanto officials were actively committed to conducting an objective assessment of its product. Moreover, because the jury was aware that Monsanto has repeatedly sold – and continues to sell – Roundup without any form of warning label, it was clear that Monsanto’s “conduct involved repeated actions,” rather than “an isolated incident,” the judge wrote.
Judge Chhabria did offer some supportive words for Monsanto’s position, writing that there was no evidence that Monsanto actually hid evidence from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), or “had managed to capture the EPA.”
And, the judge noted that no evidence was presented showing that Monsanto “was in fact aware that glyphosate caused cancer but concealed it, thus distinguishing this case from the many cases adjudicating the conduct of the tobacco companies.”
The Hardeman case is one of thousands pending against Monsanto for which Bayer is liable after purchasing the company in June of 2018. Since the purchase, four plaintiffs in three trials have won damages against the company. All allege they developed non-Hodgkin lymphoma after exposure to Monsanto’s glyphosate-based herbicides, such as Roundup. They additionally allege that the company knew of scientific evidence showing cancer risks associated with its products, but worked to suppress the information to protect its profits.
Michael Baum, one of the team of attorneys leading the Roundup litigation, said the judge’s decision was wrong.
“The Hardeman jurors carefully weighed the evidence and rendered a rational verdict in line with well recognized jury instructions and case law. There is no valid basis for disturbing their punitive damages award—why bother having jurors sacrifice weeks of their lives if a judge can just substitute his judgment for theirs despite so much evidence supporting their conclusions,” Baum said in a statement.” End quote.

AUSTRIA BANS GLYPHOSATE!
Wall Street Journal quoted:
“Austrian Herbicide Ban Adds to Problems for Roundup Owner Bayer.
Lawmakers voted to ban use of glyphosate, world’s most widely used herbicide.”
“BERLIN—Austrian lawmakers Tuesday banned the key chemical in Roundup—a first in Europe and a fresh blow to Bayer AG BAYRY -1.18% , which has lost several lawsuits in the U.S. alleging that the potent herbicide causes cancer.
The German chemicals and pharmaceuticals company completed the acquisition of Roundup inventor Monsanto Co. last year, but saw its share price plummet after a jury ruled against it for the first time. Thousands of cancer patients have since filed similar suits seeking damages.
Lawmakers in Austria were voting on a proposal by the opposition Social Democratic Party to ban use of the chemical glyphosate, the world’s most widely used herbicide, which Bayer insists doesn’t cause cancer if used as indicated.
“We want to be a role model for other countries in the EU and the world,” said Erwin Preiner, a member of the Austrian parliament for the Social Democrats who worked on the proposed ban.
Bayer is currently facing lawsuits from over 13,000 plaintiffs alleging that Roundup gave them cancer. While the Austrian decision has no direct bearing on the suits and the country is a negligibly small market for Roundup, the ban could complicate Bayer’s public efforts to defend the use of the product as safe and environmentally friendly.
Bayer has argued that regulators around the world, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the European Chemicals Agency, have declared glyphosate to be safe and not carcinogenic.
But the chemical has faced growing skepticism since a 2015 decision by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, a World Health Organization unit, classifying it as likely having the potential to cause cancer in humans.
Other countries outside of Europe have adopted total and partial glyphosate bans in the past, such as Colombia and El Salvador. Sri Lanka in 2015 was the first country to issue a national ban, but it later revoked the law because the country’s tea exports plummeted.
The vote in Austria came despite glyphosate having been cleared for sale and use in the entire European Union until 2022, which some critics say could make any national ban illegal under EU law.
A report commissioned by Austria’s Ministry for Sustainability and Tourism published Monday concluded that a total ban didn’t conform to EU law. The sponsors of the bill reject this argument, pointing to examples of other member states banning specific compounds. The European Commission has three months to object the Austrian measure, according to a Commission spokeswoman. Bayer said the Austrian parliament’s decision was contrary to scientific findings on glyphosate, ignored the safety assessment of Austria’s food-safety authority and the existing EU-wide license of the chemical.
“We expect the European Commission to review this decision critically, as it may be inconsistent with mandatory legal and procedural requirements and scientific reasoning,” said a spokesman for Bayer’s crop science unit.
A ban in the small Alpine republic where use of glyphosate-based herbicides amounts to a few hundred tons a year, would have close to no direct impact on Roundup sales, analysts say.
Annual sales of glyphosate herbicides, including by competitors, totaled around $5 billion in 2016, according to Sanford C. Bernstein. The bulk of that is generated in the U.S. and South America, where Bayer relies heavily on selling seeds genetically engineered to resist glyphosate.
But Austria’s move highlights the growing popular and political backlash against the chemical in Bayer’s own European backyard, where protecting the environment is rising up the list of voters’ concerns.
President Emmanuel Macron of France, the EU’s largest grain producer, has pledged to gradually phase out glyphosate and wants to make French vineyards the first glyphosate-free vineyards of the world. Earlier this year, a French court also banned one form of Roundup.
In Germany, Environment Minister Svenja Schulze has proposed a plan for a gradual phasing out of glyphosate. Public railway operator Deutsche Bahn AG, the country’s largest user of glyphosate, said it was setting up a research project to find alternatives to combat weeds along its 33,000 kilometers of tracks.
“We will come to a point where glyphosate isn’t used anymore,” German Chancellor Angela Merkel told the lower house of parliament last week.
All of this could make it harder for the chemical to see its EU clearance renewed in 2022. In 2017, the bloc would likely have banned glyphosate without a last-minute change of tack by Germany, which threw its weight behind the chemical, tilting the balance of the vote. The surprise move prompted grass-roots protests that forced the EU to make the process for authorizing pesticides more transparent.
“People have learned a lot about how pesticides are regulated so the process will be highly scrutinized,” said Nina Holland, a researcher with Corporate Europe Observatory, a Brussels-based think tank that has been fighting glyphosate for years.” End quote — Wall Street Journal.

“Food & Drug Safety Regulations Enforcement NOSEDIVES Under Trump.”
Quoted top line & all text posted inclusive.
“The US regulator of food and drug safety has seen steep declines in several markers of enforcement under the Trump administration, according to a new analysis in the journal Science.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) sends “warning letters” for tainted food, improperly advertised dietary supplements or even violations of human subjects’ protections in clinical trials.
The number of letters issued has fallen by 33% under Donald Trump, compared with the most recent equivalent period under the Obama administration. They fell from 1,532 under Obama to 1,033 under Trump, according to the analysis published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
“They’re a very serious and central part of how the FDA manages compliance and enforcement … it basically is an expectation that corrections will be made and made rapidly,” said the investigation’s author. The number of warning letters also fell significantly between Trump’s first and second years.
In one example Piller noted, the FDA failed to issue a warning letter for clinical trials of experimental drugs, including the anaesthetic ketamine, after questions were raised about alleged lapses in informed consent and coercion of patients. The trials also failed to report that some patients developed breathing problems and moving disorders.
The decline in warning letters spans most FDA divisions, Piller said. One significant exception is the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, which has issued more warning letters than under Obama, many of them for opioid sales or generic drugs made in China and India.
The FDA argues that it has other ways of enforcing food and drug safety, but experts interviewed by Piller were alarmed at the rate of decline in the warning letters and other measures.
The analysis found that “Official Action Indicated reports”, which come before the letters, dropped 45%, from 1,879 to 1040. Injunctions to halt the concerning findings – which require FDA collaboration with the justice department – fell from 35 to 26.
The FDA in an emailed statement said the way the data is presented “does not accurately reflect FDA’s overarching work to protect the public health”, including because warning letters are just one part of how the agency gets regulated entities to comply.
“Our use of any one enforcement tool may fluctuate year to year based on a number of factors, including the FDA’s assessment of the violations uncovered during the course of inspections, along with additional product monitoring efforts,” an agency spokeswoman, Angela Stark, said.
She said warning letters have increased from some centers of the agency, and decreased in others, “because the FDA has increased its interactions with industry to resolve issues, which often achieves more timely and effective corrective action to inspectional findings.”
Stark added that the analysis data didn’t count more than 1,300 warning letters and fines to retailers who illegally sold Juul and other e-cigarette products to minors.
The trend is not exclusive to the FDA.
Enforcement of environmental and health protections at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has similarly declined, according to a report from the advocacy group the Environmental Integrity Project. The group found the EPA is conducting 60% fewer inspections of violations than the annual average and is referring fewer polluters to the justice department for civil prosecution.“ End quote.

There was definitely hundreds of snipers with dialed in gun sights on specific body mass at this event, just one hair trigger pull away of a split second drop —for security protection; but it was a ballsy move toward eventual world peace.
Credit is due potus this time; despite just all show & no go so far for only mere info-mercial “tower+golf resort-branding” benefit.

NEW YORK TIMES QUOTED: “‘We’re right back on track,’ Trump says of China trade talks.
The United States and China have agreed to resume trade talks, President Trump said on Saturday after meeting with Xi Jinping, China’s top leader, during the Group of 20 summit in Osaka, Japan.
During a news conference on Saturday afternoon, Mr. Trump said that the United States would not impose any new tariffs on Chinese exports as the talks resume.
Mr. Trump said China had agreed to resume broad purchases of American farm products and other goods. In a surprising move, the president appeared to backtrack on a ban on the sale of American equipment to Huawei, the Chinese telecom giant.
“U.S. companies can sell their equipment to Huawei,” Mr. Trump said, explaining that he wanted to help American technology companies that had complained about the ban. In May, the Commerce Department put Huawei on a blacklist that prohibits American companies from selling equipment to Huawei. The move was a major blow to Huawei, which relies on chips, software and other equipment from the United States.
Mr. Trump said that any comprehensive resolution of the many issues involved in American legal action against Huawei would not be possible until other bilateral issues have been resolved.
But the United States also appears to have made progress. According to President Trump, China will resume at least some of its purchases of American farm goods and other products while the Trump administration keeps in place the 25 percent tariffs it previously imposed on nearly half of China’s annual exports to the United States. The negotiations had broken down seven weeks ago when the Chinese side said that it could not accept some provisions that had been tentatively agreed to in an incomplete draft text. “We discussed a lot of things, and we’re right back on track,” Mr. Trump told reporters early Saturday afternoon following his meeting with President Xi. When talks broke down in early May, Mr. Trump had directed his aides to make the legal preparations to put 25 percent tariffs on another $300 billion a year worth of American imports from China. Those tariffs would be in addition to the 25 percent tariffs that the Trump administration has already imposed on $250 billion a year of Chinese goods.” End quote — New York Times

He is the founder and principal of Hayman Capital Management, L.P., a Dallas-based hedge fund focused on global event-driven opportunities. Dr. Leonardo Trasande on TOXIC Glyphosate In Foods
“Ask the experts: Do we need to watch out for glyphosate in food?
We asked what you wanted to know about toxic exposure and put your questions to Dr Leonardo Trasande.
Do we need to watch out for glyphosate in food?
The answer:
The science regarding health effects of glyphosate is contentious, with the best evidence suggesting increased risks for cancer and effects on the kidney in workers exposed to the herbicide. And even then that evidence is debated.
But one thing is clear: eating organic avoids GMO/glyphosate concerns and reduces levels of pesticides known to be toxic to kids’s developing brains. These pesticides can disrupt thyroid function in pregnant women, which is a problem because thyroid hormone is crucial for a baby’s brain development.
Exposures to these pesticides in pregnancy have been associated with decreases in IQ as well as less development in the parts of the brain associated with cognition and behavior.
The good news is that studies in low and high income populations have found that you can reduce levels of pesticides in urine by eating organic. And price margins for organic foods have dropped substantially over the past five years, making this a much more affordable option.

Do plastic lined tin food cans contain BPA? YES!!!
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/jun/27/tin-food-cans-linings-bpa-plastic-ask-experts?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other
Quote: “Do the plastic linings of tin cans still contain BPA? I buy glass jars of organic beans/chickpeas/chopped tomatoes where possible, but often it comes down to a choice between an organic but tinned item, and a non-organic glass jarred item!
Bisphenol: what to know about the chemicals in water bottles and cans.
The answer:
Avoiding canned food is the most effective way to reduce your bisphenol exposure. Bisphenols are used in aluminum can linings to reduce corrosion. One bisphenol, BPA, has all the molecular characteristics of an obesogen, a term coined in 2006 to describe chemicals that potentially make us fatter. It enlarges fat cells, disrupts a protein that protects the heart called adiponectin, and functions as a synthetic estrogen. The latter means it can have sex-specific effects on growth, especially during vulnerable windows of development, like puberty. Studies have also shown that BPA can narrow the coronary arteries, increasing risk for coronary artery disease.
Fortunately, studies have shown you can reduce BPA levels by as much as two-thirds by avoiding canned foods – in just a few days’ time. That’s why we have seen a push towards BPA-free cans.
Unfortunately, BPA-free doesn’t mean bisphenol-free. What little we know about bisphenol S, a BPA substitute, is that it’s as estrogenic and toxic to embryos as its predecessor. The dilemma you describe – organic can versus non-organic glass – can be resolved by asking the producer what is used in their cans, as some companies are using naturally derived linings, such as oleoresin, that may not present the same hazards.

Soybean Oil and Soybean Salad Oil
Soybean oil is obtained by the extraction of oil from soybean seeds. Soybean oil contains various vitamins, minerals and unsaturated fatty acids which are essential to the well-being of the human body. It is an important ingredient in products such as salad dressings, margarine, paint and medicines. The price, adaptability and performance of soybean oil make it appropriate for a broad range of food, chemical and medical manufacturing applications. Soybean oil refers to Grade IV oil, as compared to the more refined salad oil. Both oils are for human consumption.
Soybean Meal
Soybean meal is manufactured by grinding soybean flakes which remain after removal of most of the oil from soybeans by a solvent or mechanical extraction process. Soybean meal is an important raw material used in the animal feed and farming industry due to its high protein content and edible characteristics. Given the PRC's closer proximity to customers in Asia, there is a growing demand for PRC produced soybean meal from countries such as Korea and Japan. This in turn has led to an increase in demand for our soybean meal products.
Concentrated Soy protein
Soy protein, protein extracted from the soybean, has been used since 1959 in foods and for its functional properties. Concentrated soy protein, as one of the three kinds of proteins, contains 70% soy protein. It retains most of the fiber of the original soybean and is widely used as functional or nutritional ingredient in a wide variety of food products, mainly in baked foods, breakfast cereals, and in some meat products. Because soy protein concentrates are available in different forms and very digestible, they are well-suited for children, pregnant and lactating women, and the elderly. They are also used in pet foods, milk replacements for babies (human and livestock), and even used for some non-food applications. Recently, soy protein popularity has increased due to its use in health food products, and many countries allow health claims for foods that are rich in soy protein.
