Xyratex Qualifies Arista Switches, Enabling New Storage Interoperability
By PR Newswire, June 26, 2013, 11:00:00 AM EDT
Compatibility delivers more access to low-latency, fast, dense storage value for users in media and entertainment industry
HAVANT, United Kingdom, June 26, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Xyratex Ltd (Nasdaq:XRTX), a leading provider of data storage technology, today announced that it has qualified the Arista Networks 7050 Series of network switches for use with its ClusterStor™ family of scale-out high-performance computing (HPC) storage solutions. The selection of Arista's solutions is due to their high performance, low latency and industry-best buffer capacity - all critical attributes for data storage systems in the media and entertainment (M&E) and cloud industries. This new interoperability means more access to low-latency, fast, dense storage value for users.
For example, in the M&E industry today, competitive viability among organizations requires continued reduction in time to production while simultaneously managing enormous increases in digital content processing. Higher-resolution imaging standards, 3D technology and computer generated imagery (CGI) have led to exponential increases in data creation and the need for high-performance, scalable storage systems and network fabrics to store, process and manage all of that data.
"Scaling storage and server resources horizontally, especially within the media and entertainment market, requires high density, 10/40 GbE networking technologies," said Ed Chapman, vice president of business development at Arista Networks. "The Arista 7050 Series of data center switches provides a perfect complement to Xyratex's ClustorStor HPC storage solutions as users have the option of picking either speed, or combinations thereof depending on their needs. We are pleased to be working with Xyratex on these cutting-edge solutions."
"As the top-performing HPC scale-out storage leader with appliance-like ease of use, ClusterStor delivers the performance and capacity scale needed to satisfy M&E's most intense digital content processing and rendering demands," said Todd Gresham, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Xyratex. "When you combine ClusterStor with hundreds or thousands of application servers supporting 10GbE and 40GbE connections over Arista-enabled high-speed networks, organizations now are able to regain control of escalating digital content processing costs and mitigate potential impact to project timelines."
ClusterStor enables several capabilities to solve challenges that M&E users face today. Its scale-out storage architecture can scale performance and capacity in direct proportion to the number of servers, from dozens to tens of thousands, enabling ultra-fast, massively parallel rendering and production with up to 90 petabytes in a single namespace. It delivers a long-term active archive with nearline instantaneous file retrieval, so users can access content they need immediately and in a more reliable and accessible way. In addition, its low-latency, high-throughput video streaming capability can handle the sizable data workloads users are generating today, and then some.
Arista's network technologies provide users high-density network fabric scale with flexibility to meet compute and storage cluster deployment requirements. The Arista 7050 Series is a product line of 1RU 10GbE and 40GbE wire speed multilayer switches powered by the Arista EOS, the world's most advanced network operating system.
Among other features, the switches offer:
Dense virtualization, big data processing and storage in a flat two-tier Leaf/Spine design
Non-blocking wire speed forwarding at both L2 and L3, up to 1.28 Tbps and 960 Mpps, Latency: 800ns-1200ns
Density: 16 ports of 40GbE (Spine switch), 64 ports of 10GbE (top of rack switch)
Low latency: from 800ns to 1200ns
Low power usage, less than two watts per port

Xyratex Ltd. (XRTX): Are Hedge Funds Right About This Stock?
By REY M. in News
Published: June 20, 2013 at 3:13 pm
Xyratex Ltd. (NASDAQ:XRTX) was in 9 hedge funds' portfolio at the end of March. XRTX shareholders have witnessed an increase in activity from the world's largest hedge funds of late. There were 8 hedge funds in our database with XRTX positions at the end of the previous quarter.
According to most investors, hedge funds are seen as unimportant, old financial vehicles of years past. While there are over 8000 funds trading at present, we hone in on the crème de la crème of this club, close to 450 funds. It is estimated that this group oversees the lion's share of the smart money's total capital, and by watching their top stock picks, we have brought to light a number of investment strategies that have historically beaten the broader indices. Our small-cap hedge fund strategy outstripped the S&P 500 index by 18 percentage points annually for a decade in our back tests, and since we've began to sharing our picks with our subscribers at the end of August 2012, we have outclassed the S&P 500 index by 23.3 percentage points in 8 months (see all of our picks from August).
Equally as integral, optimistic insider trading activity is another way to parse down the financial markets. As the old adage goes: there are plenty of stimuli for a corporate insider to get rid of shares of his or her company, but only one, very clear reason why they would buy. Plenty of academic studies have demonstrated the valuable potential of this tactic if piggybackers understand what to do (learn more here).
Keeping this in mind, we're going to take a glance at the key action encompassing Xyratex Ltd. (NASDAQ:XRTX).
What does the smart money think about Xyratex Ltd. (NASDAQ:XRTX)?
At Q1's end, a total of 9 of the hedge funds we track were bullish in this stock, a change of 13% from one quarter earlier.
As aggregate interest increased, key hedge funds have jumped into Xyratex Ltd. (NASDAQ:XRTX) headfirst. Renaissance Technologies, managed by Jim Simons, initiated the most valuable position in Xyratex Ltd. (NASDAQ:XRTX). Renaissance Technologies had 1.5 million invested in the company at the end of the quarter. D. E. Shaw's D E Shaw also made a $0.4 million investment in the stock during the quarter. The following funds were also among the new XRTX investors: Gregory Fraser, Rudolph Kluiber, and Timothy Krochuk's GRT Capital Partners and Matthew Hulsizer's PEAK6 Capital Management.
Insider trading activity in Xyratex Ltd. (NASDAQ:XRTX)
Insider buying is most useful when the primary stock in question has experienced transactions within the past six months. Over the last half-year time period, Xyratex Ltd. (NASDAQ:XRTX) has experienced zero unique insiders purchasing, and zero insider sales (see the details of insider trades here).
Let's also examine hedge fund and insider activity in other stocks similar to Xyratex Ltd. (NASDAQ:XRTX). These stocks are OCZ Technology Group Inc. (NASDAQ:OCZ), Imation Corp. (NYSE:IMN), STEC, Inc. (NASDAQ:STEC), Datalink Corporation (NASDAQ:DTLK), and Quantum Corp (NYSE:QTM). This group of stocks are the members of the data storage devices industry and their market caps are closest to XRTX's market cap.

Xyratex Ltd. : Xyratex Enhances ClusterStor(TM) Operating System, Unlocks More Value for Scale-Out HPC Storage
HAVANT, United Kingdom, June 18, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --
Xyratex Ltd (Nasdaq: XRTX), a leading provider of data storage technology, today announced that it has released version 1.3 of the operating system software for its industry-leading ClusterStor(TM) 6000 high-performance computing (HPC) storage solution. The enhancements in the new version will deliver added performance, capacity, security and fault tolerance to customers, making an industry-leading storage solution even more versatile and powerful.
Specifically, the new enhancements usher in:
-- The introduction of an expansion storage unit (ESU). The ESU is an
optional building block that expands the number of drives of a single
scalable storage unit (SSU) from 84 to 168, providing higher capacity
scale-out increments. This allows ClusterStor 6000 users the flexibility
to scale-out their performance linearly at much higher capacity ratios.
-- Support of 4TB SAS disk drives within ClusterStor storage systems,
enabling even higher capacity with the same blazing-fast performance.
The ClusterStor 6000 now can provide up to 256TB of usable file system
capacity in a single SSU with 4TB drives, or up to 512TB of usable file
system capacity in an SSU-ESU pair.
-- Enhanced security and performance through: a new hardware-assisted
CRC-32 feature that leverages Intel(®) Xeon(®) processor instruction
sets on each SSU embedded server module to ensure data integrity over
clustered data storage networks and drive a substantial boost to system
performance through increased efficiency; and additional compatibility
with additional user authentication systems.
-- Improved file performance with the introduction of wide stripe, which
increases the number of SSUs and ESUs a single file system or individual
file can span. Wide striping expands the number of SSUs and ESUs from 40
(160 object storage targets) to 500 (2000 object storage targets).
-- Higher availability for ClusterStor Manager. The fault tolerance in
ClusterStor management services is enhanced through automated failover
capabilities which ensure the survival of storage cluster management
services even in the event of a management node failing.
"We're confident that these significant enhancements will only add to the market leadership of our ClusterStor data storage systems, and the tremendous value users receive from them," said Ken Claffey, senior vice president of the ClusterStor business at Xyratex. "Today, in collaboration with our partners, we're helping end users achieve best-in-class performance, reliability and availability - including implementing the fastest data storage system in the world. Now we can offer users even more performance, improved scalability, security and fault tolerance."
"By using the performance-enhancing instruction sets built into the Intel Xeon processor such as in the CRC-32 function, Xyratex was able to add this key data integrity feature to their product and provide a significantly higher level of performance over what could be achieved without taking advantage of the processor's capabilities," said Bev Crair, general manager of the storage division at Intel.
"Xyratex has made a significant investment in delivering ClusterStor to the benefit of end users, and with software version 1.3 of the ClusterStor operating system to make the systems even more powerful and easier to use," said Peter ffoulkes, research director for servers, virtualization and cloud computing at 451 Research. "Xyratex has once again proved itself as a storage technology provider that is increasingly relevant to HPC and Big Data users, because of its ability to deliver market-leading capabilities and value at a compelling price."
ClusterStor delivers a new standard in file system performance, scalability and efficiency. Its unique scale-out clustered file system architecture brings together what were previously discrete server, network and storage platforms with their own separate software layers, into a single integrated high performance data storage solution. This innovative approach enables the solution to scale both performance and capacity while aggressively reducing space, power and administrative overhead.

PS still stuck in the other one, maybe average down to get out?
Oh they are looking.. Big money never talks..
I likes those beat up stocks no one is looking at.

Looking like an unavoidable golden cross in a day or 2 if not today.
Looks like good things on the way?
Now over $8.00 this morning. Sure looks like an easy path to $8.25. No resistance.

Xyratex – Ben Graham’s Famous Net-Net Stock
Posted:10/18/12By:SiHien
RESEARCH NOW
When Ben Graham wrote Security Analysis in the 1930s, he introduced his famous net-net stock to the world. To pass his net-net test, a company is valued solely based on its current assets minus all its liabilities. The idea was that when a company is identified as a net-net, the stock is as good a bargain as it can be, assuming that the business will continue to be viable. Today, not many companies pass this test, but this article examines one that does – Xyratex Ltd (XRTX).
Briefly, Xyratex is a UK-based data storage technology provider that generates sales in the United States, Europe and Asia. In fiscal year 2011, 93% of their revenue was made up of sales to its top six customers: NetApp Inc., Dell Inc, IBM Corporation, EMC Corporation, Hewlett-Packard Company and Seagate Technology.
Since the beginning of September 2012, the stock has been in free fall – losing 30% of its value as they missed sales estimates for the third quarter. In addition, management has announced that it will be recording a loss in the fourth quarter of 2012.
Perhaps because of the extreme negativity surrounding the stock and the small market cap size of the company, the market might have overreacted and punished the stock too harshly. At a market cap of close to US$200 million, Xyratex has zero debt and a cash pile of US$103 million in the latest quarter ending August 2012. With 27.5 million shares outstanding, the cash pile alone is worth $3.74 a share alone (half of its current share price).
Furthermore, total current assets are worth US$465 million on its latest balance sheet while total liabilities are at US$162 million. This gives us a back of the envelope net-net value of no less than US$300 million (compared to its current market cap of US$200 million).
While the near-term earnings power of Xyratex’s business might be questionable, there is no doubt that the depressed market capitalization along with its strong balance sheet merits a second look at the company. Furthermore, Xyratex started paying out dividends in FY 2011, distributing US$0.28 per share in the last twelve months of reported earnings. That translates to an annual dividend yield of 3.8% – essentially resulting in an investor getting paid while waiting for the market to readjust its valuation of the company.

Xyratex is starting to work its way higher after dropping from over $12 a share. At $7.54 a share and considering that XRTX was trading well over $10 last month the risk for further decline is outweighed by the potential gain that a strong bounce would provide. With today's closing price of $7.54 I think a quick bounce to $8 or better is in the cards. Now taking look at daily charts we may see that majority of the technical indicators started to show some bullish signs. The RSI just bounced off extreme oversold conditions during today's rally, MACD made a bullish cross and is heading up. Slow Stochastic also shows bullish cross with %K over %D. This is a stock you should add to your watch list as believe it could move higher from current levels.
AC Investor Blog
Bought in on the 11th to pick up the dividend and have held. There seemed to be early indications that it was about to reverse as the market had over-reacted. You've helped me before on pincher patterns, but I still have not learned them and don't chart with those indicators. Still trying to learn the few I use. Glad to have the confirmation.
It sure looks as if it can go to $8.00 pretty easily.

(Click to enlarge) (click link below for charts/tables)
XRTX has a high current ratio of 2.68, evidently making them more than capable if they ever need to cover any short-term liabilities. XRTX is currently trading at a discount to the industry for the trailing P/E as well as forward P/E. XRTX's P/E is currently 4.38, with a slightly higher forward P/E of 5.16. XRTX shows strong signs of profitability with a Return on Assets of 8.11%, Return on Equity of 12.23%, and a Return on Investment in Operating Capital of 12.23%.
In addition, XRTX has a fair dividend yield of approximately 4.31%, $0.30 per share. Institutional ownership remains at approximately 6.92% of all shares outstanding, no transactions recently worth noting. Four different analysts that cover this stock have buy ratings on it with target prices ranging from $11 to $14 per share.
Figure 2: Risk Metrics
The calculations above in figure 2 were derived from XRTX's monthly holding period returns from the last four years and were compared to the same returns of the S&P 500 to serve as a benchmark for comparison. The results concluded that XRTX out performed the S&P 500 yielding an arithmetic average of 2.06% over the four year period. The standard deviation of XRTX is 21.6% in comparison to the S&P 500. We can conclude that investing XRTX does pose a moderate level of risk, however a portion of the risk can be attributed to the systematic risk that is present industry wide.
Conclusion
Overall, XRTX is a nice value play that has the potential to provide investors with a high potential upside. The profitability levels necessary to excel are there, and relative strength indications are supporting this upward trend.

*If the earnings date is in error please ignore error. I do my best.
The last bearish weekly candle that showed up at the critical $9.5 support doesn't look good. We might see lower prices.
You are welcome, grawsha. :)
Where do I see the pps down the road?
Currently I don't have an opinion on that. There are several things I am watching right now as I debate taking a position. I still haven't decided whether I will or not.
I'm very curious to see what happens next week.
Best wishes and good luck!
Thanks, eastunder.

Needham & Company Maintains a 'Buy' on Xyratex (XRTX); F1Q11 Toward Low-end; Reducing Outlook on SI Weakness, but Largely Anticipated
8:24 am ET 04/01/2011-
Needham & Company maintains a 'Buy' on Xyratex (NASDAQ: XRTX), PT lowered by $1 to $15.
Needham analyst says, "Although XRTX execution remains solid, there are some offsetting factors within each of its business segments. SI should benefit from slowing HDD areal density growth (meaning more heads and platters), an expanding customer base (ie. Toshiba-N/R) and entering new HDD CAPEX segments offset by increased competition (Teradyne-N/R), uncertainty related to pending WDC/HGST combination, slower 2.5 /notebook demand and Japan disaster.
In NSS - expanding within IBM-N/R (V7000), anticipated higher volumes due to HP and Dell buying PAR and CML and good momentum at NTAP are somewhat offset by NTAP using XRTX/Jabil - 75/25% in
11 and up to 50/50 in 12 (although XRTX does get royalty), potential implications long-term of NTAP/Engenio acquisition and EMC transition to in-house in 2H 11." (FY11 EPS estimate lowered from $1.70 to $1.05, FY12 from $2.22 to $1.90).
Xyratex stock falls on disappointing 1Q results
Xyratex posts 1st-qtr earnings, revenue short of forecasts; stock falls nearly 15 percent
On Friday April 1, 2011, 6:44 pm EDT
HAVANT, England (AP) -- Xyratex Ltd. shares fell nearly 15 percent Friday after the company said Thursday that its fiscal first-quarter earnings fell significantly from a year earlier, even though its revenue rose.
Both its adjusted and revenue fell short of analyst forecasts, according to FactSet.
The company, which makes storage subsystems and hard disk drive capital equipment, said the numbers reflected soft demand in the storage infrastructure business, due in part to customers consolidating.
Xyratex posted net income of $4.7 million, or 15 cents per share, on $360.5 million in revenue for the three months that ended Feb. 28. That compares with net income of $26.3 million, or 85 cents per share, on $319 million in revenue a year earlier.
Excluding one-time items, Xyratex said it earned 24 cents per share.
Analysts on average had expected the company to report adjusted earnings of 22 cents per share on $374.3 million in revenue, according to FactSet.
For the current quarter, Xyratex projects revenue of $320 million to $365 million and a loss of 20 cents and 2 cents per share. Excluding one-time items, it expects its results to land between a loss of 12 cents per share to net income of 6 cents per share.
Xyratex's shares fell $1.62, or 14.5 percent, to $9.54 Friday.

Revenues from sales of our Storage Infrastructure (SI) products were $26.3 million as compared to $48 million in the same quarter a year ago, a decrease of 45.2%. Gross profit margin in the SI business was 9.7% as compared to 34.7% a year ago.
"Our first quarter results were somewhat mixed between our two businesses. Demand in our NSS business was within our expectations despite component supply challenges experienced by our largest customer. In our Storage Infrastructure business we experienced soft demand. I believe this resulted from changes in the market for 2.5 inch disk drives and also the recently announced industry consolidation among two of our customers. These factors have reduced our expectations of demand and revenues in the current fiscal year, however, in the medium to long term, I believe the consolidation will be good for the industry and our business," said Steve Barber, CEO of Xyratex. "Given the current environment in both industries that we participate in and the consolidations that are taking place, we are very focused on creating new opportunities with both existing and new customers and restricting our costs to reflect the current environment. The dynamics in both industries are still very good and with good execution and the right technologies, I feel confident that our business opportunities remain strong. We will continue to work with our customers to make them more competitive in their respective markets and remain flexible in meeting their technology and product demands."
Share Repurchase Plan
The Board of Directors has authorized a recommencement of the share repurchase plan it initially approved during the first quarter of 2008, and to increase the maximum value of shares that may be repurchased. According to the revised terms of the plan, the Company may repurchase up to an additional $50 million of its outstanding shares following April 30, 2011. As of February 28, 2011, Xyratex had 30.9 million shares outstanding.
Share repurchase transactions authorized under the plan will occur from time to time in the open market, through block trades or otherwise. Management and the Board of Directors will exercise discretion with respect to the timing and amount of any shares repurchased, based on their evaluation of a variety of factors, including current market conditions. Repurchases may be commenced or suspended at any time without prior notice. Additionally, Xyratex may initiate repurchases under a Rule 10b5-1 plan, which would permit shares to be repurchased when the Company would otherwise be precluded from doing so under insider-trading laws. The repurchase program will be funded using the Company's available cash resources, and it is intended that the repurchase program will be Rule 10b-18 compliant.
