The maker of Taser stun guns wants to put them on drones to stop school shootings
The idea from Taser maker Axon drew an immediate public rebuke from the company's own advisory ethics board, which said the company was rushing the idea.
June 3, 2022, 6:08 AM HKT
The company behind the Taser brand of stun guns said Thursday that it plans to put its weapons on drones and sell the devices as a way to stop shootings in American schools, an idea that drew an immediate public rebuke from the company's ethics board.
Axon CEO Rick Smith said that he has been exploring such a system for years and even published a graphic novel about it, and that he had now run out patience with the "fruitless" national gun debate.
Axon plans to develop "a remotely operated, non-lethal drone system that we believe will be a more effective, immediate, humane, and ethical option to protect innocent people," Smith said in a statement.
But an ethics advisory board that Axon set up in 2018 to guide the company's work on artificial intelligence warned that Axon was rushing the adoption.
"We think Axon's decision is deeply regrettable," the board said in an unsigned statement posted to Twitter.
The ethics board said that the idea of a Taser-equipped drone was brought to the board more than a year ago, and that after lengthy deliberations, a majority of the board last month voted against Axon moving forward even with a limited pilot project.
The board said Axon was pursuing a "notable expansion" of what was previously under consideration, potentially making the technology available to more clients than just policing agencies and placing surveillance cameras in schools to stream real-time to police.
"Reasonable minds can differ on the merits of police-controlled Taser-equipped drones — our own Board disagreed internally — but we unanimously are concerned with the process Axon has employed regarding this idea of drones in school classrooms," the ethics board said.
The board is advisory, and Axon management isn't required to follow its guidance. Its members include privacy advocates, former police chiefs, civil rights advocates and computer scientists.
Danielle Citron, a member of the ethics board and a University of Virginia law professor, said it was possible that some or all board members would resign because of Smith's decision.
"There's a lot of disappointment, but a lot of us don't want to be hasty and lose the chance to have an influence," she said. "If we all resign, then who's there?"
Citron said that Smith has otherwise been attentive to the ethics board, attending its meetings personally and often accepting its advice. She said she believes Smith is moving ahead with the drone idea out of a genuine desire to eliminate firearms deaths.
"It's the real deal, his concern about an alternative to guns and bullets," she said. "He's a very thoughtful guy."
Axon, formerly known as Taser, is based in Scottsdale, Ariz., and has long been at the center of public debates around police and security equipment. Hundreds of people have died after police used Tasers on them, according to news mediatallies, and Axon's police body cameras have raised privacy concerns.
Three years ago, in response to a report from the ethics advisory board, Axon said it would not add a facial recognition feature to its cameras.
Smith, the CEO, said he didn't want to wait on the drone product any longer.
"Now is the time to make this technology a reality — and to begin a robust public discussion around how to ethically introduce non-lethal drones into schools," he said in his statement.
Smith drew a comparison between his vision for a nationwide Taser-equipped drone network and indoor fire sprinklers.
"There are over 10 million fire hydrants pre-emplaced in the United States, and every modern building has fire suppression systems to contain fires until fire-fighters can arrive," he said.
"I believe we can create systems that can detect, deter, and ultimately stop a shooter within a building for a comparable cost as, or less than, fire suppression systems."
Smith planned to answer questions about the idea Friday at 1 p.m. Eastern on the Reddit forum " Ask Me Anything," Axon said.
Axon said it would use virtual reality headsets for training, and that all decisions on whether to use a Taser would be made by an "authenticated and authorized human operator who has agreed to take legal and moral responsibility for any force actions initiated."
The idea of armed, remote-controlled, flying robots appeared long ago in science fiction, and U.S. authorities have long sought to prevent their use among civilians. The Federal Aviation Administration issued a reminder in 2019 that operating a drone with a dangerous weapon attached was illegal without FAA authorization.
"Perhaps you've seen online photos and videos of drones with attached guns, bombs, fireworks, flamethrowers, and other dangerous items," the agency said then.
"Do not consider attaching any items such as these to a drone because operating a drone with such an item may result in significant harm to a person and to your bank account."
A spokesperson for the FAA said the agency had no immediate comment on Axon's proposal.
Investors reacted positively. Axon's share price rose 5.8 percent Thursday, compared to a 1.8 percent rise in the S&P 500.
I’m here..just watching..this board was never a good one for pat anyway..I agreed with everything you said.
Totally ditto:
I have been trying to get PE to focus on the schools but he want's to procure the sports venues first. He has his way and has done this before with success. So I guess we are stuck with that and his decisions until the board wants changes. And I am sick of the politicians not doing anything. The answer is in tech like Pat 1. In my opinion nothing else will work.
We have an investor webinair coming on the 9th of June and hopefully PE will give us investors something positive. There is so much to hope for, GSA, IKEA, schools, churches, hospitals, airports hotels etc.
We need traction.
I'll tell you what the biggest problem is, we've been here so damn long that we're the only ones left alive, everyone else died waiting for them to get of their ass and all the dead's shares keep getting sold of by their next of kin and keep crashing the market looking like dilution. Christ look at the top of the board there's no moderators left they all died. LOL
That's why I'm here, because guns aren't going anywhere, you can outlaw them they are still going to be everywhere, the only way forward is protecting our most vulnerable with tech like Pat 1 has IMO. The problem is this is a issue DC won't ever resolve because its a vote getter which ever side you fall, they don't want a solution. IF PE is serious about getting in schools at a minimum he better get to the state level legislatures and that might not be enough, but for sure he could get to the county level and do some good. The letter is nice but it needs to be sent to every school board member in TX right NOW! Get a salesperson their, take board members to stadiums and show them how it works, anything! Maybe they are but it just doesn't look like it, I can't believe they can't sell schools on this tech. Especially the cheap VRS?
Obviously I like you am frustrated with their sales department, it's almost like they don't have one for these events that get national coverage. I just can't believe that there isn't a opportunity here, these people are looking for help and it's right here but without anyone putting it in front of them what good is it?.
I also know this is the way forward if these schools are going to be safe. I too am a gun collector and avid shooter with no tolerence for the next gun law that only makes the law abiding citizen jump through more loops and does nothing to stop criminals. Look at Chicago, what good do gun laws do, NOTHING! So here we set with a mgmt that can't seem to get the word of their products to where it needs to be, the local level, forget these turds in DC looking for another vote. PE needs to get his letter into the hands of people that care, hell run adds in every major TX newspaper.
Enough of my rant, I'll wait for the horse that hooks to this cart. Hopefully before we're out of alfalfa.
Im not a Trumper but I am a NRA supporter and support gun control and registration. Trumps speech to the NRA said some good things and dumb things. Most importantly he said we must have only 1 entry into schools and use the newest technology to scan everyone entering the schools. PE is focused on sports arenas and other venues, he is not focused on schools yet. But there are 230,000 K-12 schools in the USA and at $10,000 per that equals $2.3 billion. I'm sure our government can afford that. So far PE is doing exactly what he said he was not going to do,,onesie twosie with the hopes of more.
The only thing they do is politicize this shi$. Their laws don't work period, or maybe someone can explain how a 18 year old bought a hand gun? If they are willing to do anything other than politicize it for more laws that don't work and look to fund real solutions then something could be done. The only thing they do is increase sales of ammo and guns with their rhetoric.
I'm not sure if Pat1 has the solution yet for this type of event but IMO this could have been avoided with Pat1 video recognition software if it was installed for 360degree view around the school and wired to lock every door at the school upon a threat recognition. However real world solutions have no political gain so I suspect further lip service from congress.

Everybody in here should be writing to Senator Chris Murphy:
https://www.murphy.senate.gov/services/help...In the topic put HomeLand Security and send your own feelings about pat1 and what happened and what Pat 1 can do to stop this #$%$
If you haven't seen senator Murphy's speech about the school shootings:
Has Peter commented on institutional investors lately? With all the latest advancements on contracts and industry relationships, feel this is missing to get the stock price moving.
That's Ok, for some reason I have read that somewhere else, doesn't matter the product is starting to get out there and there's some traction, hopefully.
I'm posting this without verification or link except to say it is from another podcast. Wishful thinking on my part,,yes.... possible.. yes
Patriot One Technologies Selected by United States Department of Defense as New Security Screening Technology for the Pentagon Headquarters. The system will be installed at all entrances and on all 5 floors.

Oak is a perfect start as far as I'm concerned. Don't think for a minute that people that run security in other venues won't come through Oak's venues and see what the Pat tech is about and recognize all the benefits that can be gained. Exposure is the name of the game, all the advertising and shows in the world will never get the attention as first hand experience. IMO
It's been a long wait for things to pick up and we've surely lost a lot of impatient investors but we need as long as period going forward with 100% success on each deployment. Eventually something will slip past, it is certain that nothing is 100% all the time but if Pat can achieve a long success record then there won't be a let down, instead just measures taken when it does to prevent it again. If someone wants to bad enough they can slip by the current systems but with new products you need that proven record that it's rare when it happens to keep trust in more and more coming on board.
Looks like he released some news anyways. That's good because it don't matter the market environment, all news becomes old news released or not.

About Oak View Group... I work in the concert/music business and just wanted to chime in about OVG. This is EXACTLY the company we want to get the attention of. OVG was started by music industry powerhouse/mogul Irving Azoff - if you don't know the name, look it up, he's possibly the biggest player in the music and concert industry. OVG manages some of the biggest arenas and stadiums around the world. This is prime real estate for PE placement.

It has been reported that EVLV was the security at the Hollywood Bowl when Dave Chappelle was attacked in stage. Hopefully this will get someone's attention.

not a big deal. nothing out of pocket
I don't see the good news here. No price. She didn't pay anything, just awarded from the company. She has the right to buy, doesn't mean she did. Nothing out of pocket unless this was awarded at .75 under the offering a week or so now.
