BP to build $800 mln Kansas wind farm in 2012
* 419-megawatt wind farm will be biggest for Kansas, BP
* BP says project to employ as many as 500
* Key tax credits for wind sector due to expire next year
Oct 3 (Reuters) - BP Plc announced plans on Monday to build an $800 million wind farm in Kansas next year, providing a lift for the U.S. wind power industry as its outlook dims with the looming expiry of federal tax credits.
The 419-megawatt Flat Ridge 2 wind farm will include 262 General Electric turbines spinning about 43 miles (69 km) southwest of Wichita, BP said, in what will be the largest installation for both the state and BP Wind Energy.
Subject to permits, BP will start work on the 66,000-acre (26,700-hectare) project within the next three months, employing as many as 500 people at the peak of construction with a target of commercial start-up by the end of 2012.
Most of the electricity will be sent out of state, with Associated Electric Cooperative Inc signing a power purchase agreement for 314 MW that will help power its 875,000 members in Missouri, northeast Oklahoma and southeast Iowa.
BP Wind Energy said it was actively marketing the remaining capacity to other customers in the Midwest.
But the U.S. wind industry faces a tough road ahead. Wind energy specialist MAKE Consulting has just trimmed estimates for turbine demand, citing lower expectations for China and the United States -- the latter due to uncertainty about production tax credits due to expire next year.
The politics of renewable energy have also been greatly complicated by the troubles surrounding federal loan-backed solar company Solyndra.
Flat Ridge 2 is a new benchmark for BP Wind Energy, which now has 13 smaller wind farms in seven states producing a total of 1,600 MW of capacity -- enough for 500,000 U.S. homes.
One of them, Flat Ridge 1, is located several miles away from its larger namesake and started up in February 2009, with its 50 MW going to Westar Energy Inc . (Reporting by Braden Reddall in San Francisco; Editing by Gary Hill)

Westar completes second phase of 345kV power line in Kansas
EBR Staff Writer
Published 01 September 2010
US based Westar Energy has completed second phase of a new 345kV transmission line in south-central Kansas.
The power line connects Reno County substation, located northeast of Hutchinson, with the Summit substation, located southeast of Salina.
First phase of the line, from Gordon Evans Energy Center near Wichita to the Reno County substation, was put in service in December 2008.
Westar Energy vice president of transmission operations and environmental services Kelly Harrison said that energizing phase two completes a 345kV loop around the western portion of Westar's system, eliminating a significant constraint in the Southwest Power Pool region for the movement of energy.
Westar Energy provides electric service to more than 675,000 customers in Kansas and has about 6,500MW of electric generation capacity.
The company also operates and coordinates approximately 33,000 miles of electric distribution and transmission lines.

WESTAR SENDS CREWS TO HELP AFTER HURRICANE IRENE
Crews are headed to New York to assist in restoration.
TOPEKA, Kan., Aug. 26, 2011 — Westar Energy received a call for assistance from the New York Mutual Assistance Group in preparation for damage resulting from Hurricane Irene,
which is scheduled to make landfall this weekend.
Westar has released most of its contract crews and will be sending about 80 Westar linemen, supervisors, safety and support personnel to assist with restoration efforts. Some crews
will leave Westar’s Topeka Operations Center, 4001, NW 14th, at 2:30 p.m. today. Crews will pass through Kansas City, meeting up at Interstate 70 mile marker 414 in two groups: one group
will depart at 4 p.m.; and the second will depart at 6 p.m.
Employees from Westar’s Topeka, Manhattan, Emporia, Marysville, Salina, Lawrence, Fort Scott, Wichita, Newton, Humboldt, Arkansas City, Atchison, Pittsburg and Olathe offices
will assist with the restoration.
Westar crews plan to be in Poughkeepsie, NY, by Monday morning and initially plan to stay for 14 days to assist Central Hudson Gas & Electric, which will reimburse Westar for expenses related to the assistance. Predictions indicate Irene may be a category 3 hurricane accompanied by 80+ mph winds, which means 55 million people over 1,400 miles could find themselves without power.
Eastern utilities have asked for assistance from as far away as Colorado in preparation for the storm. As of Friday morning, thousands of utility workers were scheduled to assist with
power restoration, and more were still being sought.
Westar Energy is a member of the Midwest Mutual Assistance Group. This group allows Westar to call upon neighboring utilities and their contractors for help to restore service in the
event of a significant event, such as severe storm. In return, Westar will send line and tree crews
to assist neighboring utilities when they are in need. In the event of catastrophic damage utilities reach out for assistance from across the nation.
