I just received an email from vz informing me of this nonsense new policy. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the router I have been using - yet they want to charge me a maintenance fee just in case something happens to it because it is old? I thought it was a joke at first but found this:
Verizon creates monthly “maintenance” fee for customers with old routers
$2.80 monthly fee boosts broadband bill for FiOS customers with old equipment.
Jon Brodkin - 7/20/2016, 4:26 PM
The Verizon FiOS Quantum Gateway (no maintenance fee required).
Verizon

Verizon FiOS customers using one of the company's older routers are being told they must pay a new monthly "maintenance charge" of $2.80 to cover the cost of supporting the apparently outdated equipment. Customers also have the option of buying one of the company's newer routers, though some report being able to convince Verizon to give them a new one for free.
"Our records indicate that you have an older model router that is being discontinued," says an e-mail to customers published today by DSLReports. "If you do plan to keep using your current router, we will begin billing, on 9.29.16, a monthly Router Maintenance Charge of $2.80 (plus taxes), to ensure we deliver the best support."
Verizon confirmed the change to DSLReports, saying that the notice was sent to customers using the BHR1 and BHR2 routers. "Many of these routers have been in use for nearly ten years and have required more frequent repairs, so we’re trying to reduce that maintenance load and expense," Verizon said.
Customers getting this e-mail were also told they can "upgrade to a certified, pre-owned FiOS Advanced Wi-Fi Router" for a one-time purchase of $59.99 with free shipping. But some customers discussing the change in a DSLReports forum thread say it's sometimes possible to get a newer router for free by calling Verizon or asking on the Verizon Direct forum. One customer who followed this advice says Verizon promised to send an Actiontec router that doesn't require a maintenance fee. The Actiontec model isn't the newest one Verizon pitches to customers, but it's new enough that it hasn't been discontinued by the manufacturer.
New FiOS customers are told that they can rent an FiOS Quantum Gateway for $10 a month or buy it outright for $150. This is Verizon's most up-to-date model, with 802.11ac Wi-Fi technology.
You can also buy the FiOS Quantum Gateway from Amazon for $134 or an older Actiontec model. If you buy one outright, you'll avoid the maintenance fee—at least until it's "discontinued."
Using a router not approved by Verizon is a bit complicated. Some customers hook up the Verizon router but connect it to another router that provides Wi-Fi and other capabilities for their home networks. As such, they're annoyed that they suddenly have to pay a new fee. "The only thing the piece of junk does is run into my high quality network," One DSLReports user wrote. "I've even turned the Wi-Fi off. Seems illegal to make you get a maintenance contract without choice. If I'm paying a 'maintenance surcharge' this must mean I have maintenance and they'll, of course, replace it free if it breaks (trying not to laugh too hard)."

Verizon believes Yahoo email hacking 'material,' could affect deal
Verizon's general counsel, Craig Silliman, said on Thursday the company has a "reasonable basis" to believe that Yahoo's massive data breach of at least 500 million email accounts represents a material impact that could allow Verizon to withdraw from its $4.83 billion deal to buy Yahoo.
Silliman told reporters that the data breach could trigger a clause that could allow Verizon to withdraw from the deal. "I think we have a reasonable basis to believe right now that the impact is material and we're looking to Yahoo to demonstrate to us the full impact. If they believe that it's not then they'll need to show us that," he said, declining to comment on whether talks are under way to renegotiate the purchase price.http://www.cnbc.com/2016/10/13/verizon-believes-yahoo-email-hacking-material-could-affect-deal.html?%3Fsource=Twitter

Lol not if vanguard get there way.
Hurry up with the acquisition so I can sue you!
That's the way I felt also. I'm not surprised that this happened though because it seems like over the years many Yahoo email accounts have been hacked.
I have a yhoo account but nothing on it that I would be afraid of someone hacking.
Yahoo says information from at least 500M accounts was stolen in 2014
SAN FRANCISCO — Information from at least 500 million Yahoo accounts was stolen from the company in 2014 and the company believes that a state-sponsored actor was behind the hack.
The information may have included names, email addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth, and, in some cases, encrypted or unencrypted security questions and answers, Yahoo said.
Claims surfaced in early August that a hacker using the name "Peace" was trying to sell the usernames, passwords and dates of birth of Yahoo account users on the dark web — a black market of thousands of secret websites.
Word of the breach is not surprising given the hacker chatter surrounding the company, said Alex Heid, chief research officer at SecurityScorecard, real-time cybersecurity rating and risk monitoring platform.. There have been numerous underground conversations surrounding the tech giant since late June, he said.
The expected confirmation also comes as Yahoo looks to complete its $4.8. billion sale of its core Internet business to media giant Verizon Communications.
Should it prove to be so, and given the unsettled nature of Yahoo's ownership just now, “regulators should be concerned with who will take responsibility for the response to this compromise. It can be easy for the ‘right thing to do’ to slip through the cracks in a multi-billion dollar transition, said Tim Erlin, senior director of IT security and risk strategy at Tripwire, a computer security firm.
Yahoo Chief Executive Officer Marissa Meyer stands to earn as much as $44 million if she leaves the company as part of that deal.
Most consumers might not think there’s much in their Yahoo account that would be of use to hackers, which typically might only include only their email and Yahoo password. However that simple duo offers multiple users for ingenious hackers bent on extracting the maximum value from information, say experts.
First, the password. According to a Gartner survey, 50% of users reuse their passwords across multiple platforms. So armed with an email address and Yahoo password, hackers might be able to gain access to multiple accounts.
The technique is called “credential stuffing” and it’s become epidemic over the last year and a half, said Avivah Litan, a vice president and analyst at Gartner Research.
“The bad guys get lists of user IDs and password and then test them, they run through them at all the sites they want to attack to see where they work,” she says.
Once hackers gain access to other accounts, they are able to assemble dossiers on individuals. These are called “fullz” and include as much information as the hacking group has about a person, assembled from multiple sources over time. Typically they contain the person’s name, Social Security number, birth date, address, birthday, account numbers and other data.
"There are fullz available probably for most of the U.S. population,” said Litan.
The attackers don’t only use that information to go after bank accounts and credit cards, but also less obvious and harder to track information that is still worth money on the black market.
That can include loyalty points at hotel chains and airlines, avatars and points from online games, stored value in coffee cards. Once accessed, all of these can be siphoned off, bundled and then resold.
“They’ve gone low, slow and distributed. You used to be able to see these attacks coming through really quickly after a breach,” said Litan. Instead organized crime groups take their time, harvesting points and value.
“It’s very lucrative,” said Litan.
I fear VZ has taken on an antiquated , lead winged albatross in Yahoo.
It seemed that ever since Yahoo tried to adopt to mobile, the services have deteriorated, sometimes dramatically.
The previously popular and prosperous Yahoo Finance site recently made a series of suicidal changes that compromised or totally ruined it's long standing utility.
I sure hope they can revive that smelly corpse.

Verizon to buy Fleetmatics for about $2.4 billion
[Associated Press]
August 1, 2016
NEW YORK (AP) — Verizon said Monday that it plans to pay about $2.4 billion to buy Fleetmatics, which makes software used by cable companies, energy providers and others to manage their fleets of vehicles.
Verizon will pay $60 for each share of Fleetmatics, a nearly 40 percent premium of the stock's closing price of $42.96 Friday.
Fleetmatics, based in Dublin, said it has more than 37,000 customers that use its software to track the location of vehicles driven by workers. Verizon, which provides cellphone and internet service, said the deal will boost its workforce management business.
The new deal comes a week after New York-based Verizon said it would pay $4.8 billion to buy Yahoo Inc.'s websites , apps and other properties.
Shares of Verizon Communications Inc. slipped 31 cents to $55.10 in morning trading Monday, while Fleetmatics Group PLC jumped $16.67, or 39 percent, to $59.63.http://finance.yahoo.com/news/verizon-buy-fleetmatics-2-4-130706055.html

Verizon Downgraded On Valuation, Uncertainty Over Yahoo, iPhone 7
Oppenheimer & Co. downgraded Verizon Communications (VZ) stock on a number of factors, including valuation, uncertainty over its possible acquisition of Yahoo (YHOO), wireless revenue growth and the outcome of a radio spectrum auction.
In addition, Apple's (AAPL) expected rollout of the iPhone 7 this fall could pressure wireless profit margins, said Oppenheimer analyst Tim Horan.
Verizon stock has run up more than 20% in 2016, while AT&T (T) stock has gained 24%, amid growing investor demand for dividend-paying stocks as global interest rates remain historically low.
Horan, though, downgraded Verizon stock to perform because of the issues cited.
"We remain optimistic on long-term wireless and fiber fundamentals, but the stock is now $2 above our prior price target and is trading at relative highs on several metrics," Horan said in the report.
AT&T is due to report Q2 earnings on Thursday, while Verizon's results are slated for next Tuesday.
Verizon stock was down a fraction, near 55.60, in afternoon trading in the stock market today. Verizon is in still in range from a 54.49 buy point.
AT&T stock fell slightly, below 43. AT&T is still slightly extended from an early June breakout. Investors should avoid chasing stocks too far past proper buy points to reduce the risk of significant stock losses.
How much wireless firms will spend in an auction of airwaves now used by local TV broadcasters has been a concern to Wall Street analysts. T-Mobile US (TMUS) is also bidding, while Sprint (S) is not taking part in the auction.
Verizon has been viewed as the front-runner to acquire web portal Yahoo's internet and advertising business. According to reports, AT&T also made an offer in the final round of bidding.
"Verizon's acknowledged interest in Yahoo's assets and the broadcast incentive auction in particular as well as a change in FCC leadership have historically pressured wireless stocks, as have the two-year (Apple) iPhone refresh," added Horan. "We believe a clear path to wireless revenue growth in second half 2017 is key."http://www.investors.com/news/technology/verizon-downgraded-on-valuation-uncertainty-over-yahoo-iphone-7/?yptr=yahoo

Big Gains for Striking Verizon Workers in New Agreement
COMPANY AGREES TO ADD 1,300 NEW CALL CENTER JOBS ON THE EAST COAST; 10.9% RAISE OVER FOUR YEARS; FIRST CONTRACT FOR WIRELESS RETAIL WORKERS
Sunday, May 29, 2016
Nearly 40,000 Verizon workers who have been on strike since April 13 are celebrating big gains after reaching a tentative agreement with the company. After 45 days of the largest strike in recent history, Verizon will add 1,300 new east coast call center jobs, and reverse several other outsourcing initiatives that will create new field technician jobs. The four-year proposed agreement provides 10.9% in raises, a $1250 signing bonus in the Mid-Atlantic and a $1000 signing bonus plus a $250 healthcare reimbursement account in the Northeast, $2800 minimum in profit sharing, pension increases, and a first contract for Verizon Wireless retail store employees in Brooklyn, NY and Everett, MA.
“CWA appreciates the persistence and dedication of Secretary Perez, Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service Director Allison Beck and their entire teams. The addition of good new jobs at Verizon is a huge win not just for striking workers, but for our communities and the country as a whole. This contract is a victory for working families across the country and an affirmation of the power of working people,” said Chris Shelton, President of the Communications Workers of America. “It proves that when we stand together we can raise up working families, improve our communities and advance the interests of America’s working people.”
“Our children and our families have been depending on us to stand up for what’s right and what’s fair,” said Fitzgerald Boyce, a Verizon field technician based in New York. “Striking wasn’t an easy decision for our families, but we knew that we had to fight to save good jobs and our way of life. We fought hard and we won.”
“Because we fought together as a union, my kids will be able to see me at night. We were all so worried about the potential of transfers and more offshoring, but now Verizon is going to bring more jobs back. All American companies should be doing more to keep good jobs in the country,” said Christina Martin, a Verizon call center worker in Pennsylvania.
“For the first time, Verizon Wireless retail workers have a union and a fair contract,” said Mike Tisei, a Verizon Wireless retail worker in Everett, Massachusetts. “For the wireless retail workers who joined CWA in 2014, that means a better quality of life and meaningful economic security for our families. Today is a great day for my family and working families along the East Coast, and it’s only possible because we stood together.”
"We secured a contract our members can be proud of. It secures additional good middle class jobs for our members in the Mid-Atlantic and keeps them in our communities,” said CWA District 2-13 Vice President Ed Mooney. “We were able to push back against a number company demands and achieve a contract that includes new job growth, specifically 850 call center jobs, returns work to union members; keeps centers from being closed and job security is intact and provides improvements in retirement benefits. I am so proud of the members for standing together and standing up for themselves; our communities, the customers and their families."
"After more than six weeks on the picket line, Verizon workers won an excellent new contract that will protect good jobs and preserve our standard of living. The members' unity and determination defeated company proposals to outsource and contract out work, and the new agreement will create 1,500 new union jobs up and down the East Coast," said Dennis G. Trainor, Vice President of CWA District One. "Together, we are turning the tide from cutbacks against working people to building a stronger labor movement and strengthening the power of working Americans. And, for the first time in history, Verizon Wireless retail employees in Brooklyn, NY and Everett, MA will have a union contract that improves working conditions and gives workers a united voice on the job."
Striking workers will be back on the job on Wednesday, June 1. Those with evening shifts that go past midnight on June 1 will be back on the job at the beginning of their shifts on Tuesday, May 31.
Highlights from the proposed agreement, which will be presented to members for a ratification vote after the return to work, include:
A 10.9 percent raise over the next 4 years with compounded interest, including 3% upon ratification, and 2.5% on each anniversary of the contract.
$1250 signing bonus in the Mid-Atlantic and a $1000 signing bonus plus $250 healthcare reimbursement account in the Northeast, and a minimum of $700 in corporate profit sharing payments in each of the next four years.
The first contract ever for nearly 70 Verizon Wireless retail store workers
All call centers that had been threatened with closure in the Mid-Atlantic region will remain open. Three of the five threatened call centers in upstate New York will also remain open; the six workers affected in the other two centers will be offered jobs locally in the company.
The new contract guarantees that an increased percentage of customer service work will be handled by unionized workers. As a result, Verizon will add 1,300 call center jobs, 850 in the Mid-Atlantic region and 450 in the Northeast.
Several major contracting initiatives will be reversed, sustaining work for union members in their communities and returning a significant amount of pole maintenance work to the unionized workforce in New York State. There will be a 25% increase in the number of unionized crews doing pole work in New York State.
Existing Job security language will be preserved, as will existing language on transfer and seniority protections for retirement incentives. All of the company’s proposals on forced interstate transfers of technicians were withdrawn.
All proposed reductions of pensions were withdrawn by the company, and there will be three 1% increases in the defined benefit pensions over the life of the agreement.
The company agreed to terminate a performance supervisory program (known as QAR) in effect in the five boroughs of New York City that workers found extremely abusive, and both parties will work with an outside consultant to develop a non-punitive program. This was a major issue for NYC-based technicians.
Proposed cuts in accident and disability benefits were withdrawn. The parties agreed to changes to active and retiree healthcare that generate savings to the company while protecting excellent plan designs for medical care.
There is a settlement that yet has to be ratified. Verizon conceded to most of the Unions demands. Apparently VZ realized that it actually needs it's trained American Workforce.
LOL. It's very bizarre. I was able to get on the other day and I paid the bill. I logged out of the website and tried to get back in again and the same thing happened. I could login but I couldn't see or pay the bill.
Now you can pay your bill! You must be so happy! rotf

Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez has announced that a deal has been reached between telecoms giant Verizon and unions representing 39,000 workers ending a six week strike over cuts to pensions and pay.
The strike started on April 13 when some 35,000 workers walked off the job, making it the largest strike in the US history.Verizon had a 7 month strike in the 70's The striking workers included network technicians and customer service representatives in the company's Fios Internet, telephone and television services unit.
Described by Perez as a "tentative resolution," Verizon’s workers, unions, and management have reached an agreement in principle on a four-year contract.

Verizon Communications Inc. and its labor unions have reached an agreement in principle that would end a weekslong labor strike, the U.S. Labor Secretary Thomas Perez said.
Recent discussions between the two sides have resulted in a four-year contract that would resolve the dispute, Perez announced in a news release. The two sides are working to put the agreement in writing, and then it will be submitted to union members for ratification.
“I expect that workers will be back on the job next week,” Perez said.
The strike, which began April 13, involves nearly 40,000 employees, primarily in Verizon’s VZ, +0.88% landline division.
Terms of the new labor accord weren’t disclosed. Verizon officials and union representatives had no immediate comment.
An expanded version of this report appears at WSJ.com.
You hear anything that they just settled?
Funny how Verizon has told the state of NJ that they have lost more than 20% revenue but have lied to shareholdersby saying they only lost $200 Million.. Cause 20% loss would amount to a Several billion dollar loss
I had thought that maybe it was my home computer but the same thing happens if I use my work computer or my iPad.
Just checked my account to see if I could access the bill online. No problem. Must be a glitch on your end.
Fantastic Job Today CWA 1400 & IBEW T-6 on Boston Rally Turnout Against VZ CEO Greedy Lowell McAdams!! When We Fight We Win!!!
VZ strike will cost company $200M in profits
Verizon's CEO and analysts are confirming that the strike is having a significant impact on the company’s financials – on both wireline and wireless business.
At an investors conference in Boston today, where more than 800 strikers are protesting, CEO Lowell McAdam confirmed that the strike may hurt second quarter earnings as Verizon falls behind on installations without the support of its 40,000 trained technicians and customer service representatives.
This comes as financial analysts tell the Philadelphia Inquirer that the strike will cost Verizon at least $200 million in profits this year and that the company will lose 150,000 FiOS video and data customers due to the massive work stoppage.
And Friday, Wells Fargo analysts projected an impact on both the wireless and wireline sides of the business as the bank reduced Verizon’s second quarter revenue estimate by $343 million and 2016 wireline estimate by $826 million.
Overall, Verizon’s stocks are down by 5% since the beginning of the strike as its brand name takes a hit.
Meanwhile, yesterday Syracuse became the latest of 16 cities that have passed resolutions in support of striking Verizon workers.
Fortune reports that the municipal resolutions come at a time when Verizon’s stock values have dropped by 5% and Verizon’s CFO acknowledges that FiOS sales are significantly down as the strike continues.
OMG it sounds like Candid Camera. But it isn't funny!
The saga continues.
Still have not been able to retrieve our telephone bill online so that I can pay it.
Even though I was able to login I reset the password. I am still able to login but still cannot look at the bill or pay it.
My husband had called Verizon last week and told them to mail us a bill. I received an email confirmation that they would mail the bill but it could take 30 days?????? Are they sending it via carrier pigeon?
Yesterday he called them again and really got into it with person on the phone. He said that this problem was a result of the strike and of course the person he spoke to insisted that it wasn't.
He said he would email me a copy of the bill. Five minutes later I received two emails that said exactly the same thing. It was instructions on how to retrieve a copy of the bill online!!!! I KNOW HOW TO DO THAT BUT VERIZON WON'T LET ME
At this point they can wait for their money. When I get a bill from them and I know it's a correct bill I will pay it. It's up to them how long that will take.
The really odd thing is that I can view my Dad's bill online and pay it.
Maybe they are just shutting out employees and retirees?
