NSOM challenge...better late than never:
1. BSPM. Chinese pharmaceutical company that has an OTC drug for Hepatitis B sufferers. Doesn't cure the disease, but helps provide relief from the symptoms. Company has guided for a strong FY10; my estimate is that they can earn 0.61 - 0.66 depending upon share counts. Trades around 3.00, but I'd expect this to be higher by y/e. Near term catalysts may be a bit murky, but they should start showing better y/y eps growth this quarter. Currently trades at 4.7x forward PE
2. CCME. One of my favorites. Has strong margins, cash flow from operations, competitive advantages, and an advertising scheme that works and is much more cost effective than its other competitive media forms. Still working through the big warrant call and subsequent 30MM investment from CV Starr, which will keep share count high vs last year....eps growth will be ok but not "explosive". Still, on its strengths, the stock is cheap....I think it can earn close to 2.00 in fd eps this year and trades around 12. Should be closer to 16-20, but the presence of so many traders in this stock may limit any upside. Trading at a 6x forward PE.
3. CVVT. China Valve. A beneficiary of several secular trends in investment in China. Water treatment plants, Oil/refineries, and Nuclear power plants all require their specialized valve products....demand is very strong, and I'm impressed by this management team's ability to identify good, cheap acquisitions and integrate them quickly into their business (which is growing very strong on an organic basis as well). I think they can earn around 1.25 in FY10, and I'm looking for the stock to recover to at least 10 in the short run. Very good Q1 eps growth of 73% y/y, and that included the impact of nearly 19% increase in fds as well. Quite simply, this is a casualty of the "avoid China infrastructure" selling rotation that has taken place recently. Trading at 6.4x forward PE.
4. SCLX. Formerly SCLXD, Sino Clean energy has forecast very strong revenue and net income growth over the course of this year. While share counts have risen, this is one of the few stocks that will see fd eps growth in spite of this. I think they can earn 1.30+ for FY10; I'd be happy to see it trading close to 10 (right around its old 52 w high). Great cash flow and margin expansion....benefits from a trend toward cleaner burning fuel consumption in China. Moving off the OTC (announced this week)...has provided a nice boost to the sp. Trading at 5.6x forward PE
5. SVLF. Silverleaf resorts...decent quarter reported for Q1, earning 0.08 ft, fd. While this was down y/y, the company should have easier comps moving forward and showed improved numbers sequentially from Q4. High debt, but the company was able to do a recent securitization...which indicates the secondary market is loosening up for these types of loans. This was a critical problem in 2008 and the company could have gone bankrupt if unable to roll over its debt. A play on a slowly recovering US economy. If Q1 can be annualized, then it trades at 3.6x PE
6. TXIC. Delays in filing the annual report have crushed the stock. Its a foreign filer so the deadline is June 30 for FY09. Trades at <3x forward eps. The company had guided for sales growth in FY10 back in February and indicated that it had seen nice strength in Q4 numbers. I would suspect that the company will get its act together and file on time...and it should get a decent pop if everything looks relatively clean and the outlook is still as strong as projected in Feb. Company has upgraded its auditor to BDO and is trying to get Sarbox compliant. They are trying to do the right things, but the agonizingly slow pace and uncertainty has put a cloud over the company and depressed the stock price. I'm hoping that it will recover fairly quickly, as it by far the lowest PE in its segement (WATG, SORL, CAAS)

VMC PSL 15 Indexes
Commentary: We have numerous indexes to present this contest. So without further ado let me give a brief explanation of them. The The Top 15 Index is made up of all stock being picked at least 5 times in the contest, this index is equally weighted. The Top 175 Index, is also equally weighted, and measures the average performance of all the stocks picked in this contest (Our stock universe). The Average Portfolio Return, measure the average performance of the 56 portfolios. These indexes or averages should be familiar to everyone, as I have presented these in past contest(s).
Other indexes to be presented: Average Wildcard Index this index measures the average performance of the 21 wildcards chosen in the contest, this index is equally weighted. Average Non Wildcard Index This index measures the average performance of the 154 non-wildcard entries, and this index is also equally weighted as well. Average Wildcard Index (Weighted Average) this index only difference from the Average Wildcard Index is this index uses a weighted average approach. What This basically means is there are 26 units in this portfolio, obviously the majority of stock only have 1 unit, but a stock like JBII.OB has 4 units because it was picked 4 times in the contest. Average Non Wildcard Index (Weighted Average) this index only difference from the Average Non Wildcard Index is this index uses a weighted average approach. What this basically means is there are 298 units in this portfolio, obviously the majority of stock only have 1 unit, but a stock like CCME is weighted much more heavily and has 11 units because it was picked 11 times in the contest. Next, we get to the Average Portfolio (Original) the only difference between this index and the average portfolio return is it excludes the impact of transactions, meaning if no one could make transactions (Which is obviously not the case) this would be the average portfolio return. The Champions Index is basically and index that takes the average of the all the former PSL champions in PSL 15. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask, and I will answer them to the best of my ability. Hope you enjoy the info.

Hey, Don't count me out yet <bg>.
Well, the nsomniyak challenge is closed for PSL15.
First and foremost, thanks to those that stepped up and posted their DD. It is much appreciated.
I must say that I was very disappointed that only 8 contestants responded. I know that the markets are diving and people are very worried about their real-world investments, but, frankly, 8 is a pathetic showing.
SSK - please advise re: your charity of choice and I will send a check immediately.

actually it was friday, so you can definetly Double down on Monday. Hope This helps.
nsomniyak: Thanks for the good laugh this Sunday morning. Fox could even broadcast this during primetime. I would watch.
When's 1st chance to double down, Monday close?
nsomniyak challenge
APT - small company known for making N-95 masks during the H1N1 scare. They have recently had supply issues but they have also moved into different areas of clothing protection. Finances have increased year over year as well as profits. Should be a steady earner.
MSN - Electronic company that offered a huge dividend earlier this year. I made a bunch of cash with this one. Watching it closely as Duetsch Bank is selling shares it acquired by default. Hopefully, once the selling stops the price will rebound.
ZYXI - Medical and pain management systems supplier. Expanding their sales force and just moved into a larger building. CEO is predicting (and accomplishing) some great growth. Looks like an easy double from the current low price.
CRXX - Another pain management type company. They get royalty payments from a partner that is quite substantial. Huge growth y/y. I'm not sure why this hasn't blown up bigger than it has. Dilution from stock issued compensation? Still could do well at any time.
MILL - Oil and NG company that just moved to the Naz. CEO is all about growing through drilling and/or buying. Steady upward movement. If oil prices go ballistic this summer...this one is gonna be a great pick.
JBII - This is my lottery ticket. Price has come back down to earth but there are still some issues with accounting. They just got the dreaded "E". Hopefully, everything gets cleared up quickly and price can rebound. Waiting on some permits also that should allow them to begin production and generate some revenue.
wahooo ! My first and only time as the leader. Sorry this challenge had to end this early. Better luck next time guys.
See ya in the next contest.

Nsomniyak challenger:
GORO.OB and NXG - both plays on gold
PPCO - see Gus's write-up, solid company, expect rising earnings and royalties
UVIC.OB - similar story, strong balance sheet, high dividend, and recently bought back big portion of their float, I'm curious if they will do another "special" dividend this August/
MNDO - seems way undervalued with expected increase in revs this year
ERSO.PK - low float, pays div., had .29 vs. .02 in 1stQ, if it can repeat, could take off ($2.83 now), if markets slow, probably won't.
yield
Dang! I knew there was something wrong with my investment strategy. That MUST be it!
They don't train monkeys like they used to in the good old days.
Here's an idea re: how FREE can make the most of their ships approaching end of useful life. Feel free to forward it to management.
Load the ship up with explosives, or simply nitrate fertilizer.
Put a 'copter on deck, sufficient to evacuate a skeleton crew, which should include a pilot.
Sail back and forth off the coast of Somalia.
When attacked by pirates, evacuate via the helo.
After the ship is sailed back to port. trigger the radio control.
BOOM!
This has been a public service announcement...
Well hopefully you do well in this contest and can buy your own pet monkey those "free range" ones don't know how to throw a dart
I take exception to that comment. It wasn't a pet monkey, it was an honest-to-goodness "free range monkey". :)
and they were lawn darts (anyone remember "Jarts"?) :)
NSOMNIYAK CHALLENGE
Its always good to hear why other people made their picks (even if it was where their pet monkey through the darts) so here are mine.
FREE - This is a small bulk shipping company. They have less debt (though still a fair amount) then most. I am not too concerned about their debt especially if earnings and rates keep improving. In fact I think they are getting close to being able to buy another ship while maintaining the level of debt. I get a good sense of management knowing the business but am concerned they may be purchase happy and dilute at too low a price to make a purchase (especially with a couple of ships nearing an end of their useful life). Now on to the positives. The spot rates and BSDI index have generally been improving for some time and management has been doing a good job playing the spot market the past year or so rather then locking in a lower rate. I actually thought the stock would move much more on the Q1 results .09.
PPCO - Its been talked about on the VMC board but here is why I like it. There EPS will benefit from receiving the full royalty (ENDO was holding back 50% till some costs were recovered). Plus Opana ER sales are continuing to improve! I think .22 +/- in Q2 is very doable even with the proxy battle. The proxy fight doesn't concern me to me the bigger risk is an at risk launch of generic Opana ER. Additional upside could come from positive news on their Orphan drug (but I think data isn't likely till after PSL15 ends). A win on the patten front for Opana would be a real coup and skyrocket the stock. Also they have been signing nice little deals using their TIMERx technology. If one of these advances and turns into even half of an Opana the stock will really take off too.
TCCO - I've owned this stock for close to a year and my regret is not buying more of it a year ago. They provide secure communications products and have been mentioned on the VMC boards. They have preannounced a huge order that will be delivered this year so baring problems should do quite well in the next 3 quarters or so. The upside could come in a few areas. Management has been pretty conservative in PR's (I like conservative management) so you won't get forward looking expectations of more orders. But in addition to that possibility in reading the Q's/K they mention about trying to partner with radio manufacturers and they have added staff the past year so I think they are foreseeing continued growth.
LGND - Is the only pick I do not own (but secretly hope it does bad in the competition so I can buy it). They are an early stage drug discovery company with some nice partnerships. I think the stock has been hammered for a couple years and could recover well. I haven't invested (yet) because I'd like to do more DD and see how a couple of their partnered products turn out (one is approved and they are getting royalties the others I am interested in are in mid stage trials).
LMLP and MNTA I picked before and my reasoning hasn't changed since the PSL14 so anyone interested can see what I wrote then #msg-45342130
Tim - at .36% you are 7 times more in the black than my .05% :)
THE NSOMNIYAK CHALLENGE
For my original 6 picks for this PSL 15 contest, I own BEST, CHGY, FEEC and JGBO, but I don't own NIV and SECX. The reasons I picked them are listed below:
BEST - Traded less than net tangible assets and forward estimated PE=7. Business has been improving with continue increase in revenue. It just posted a good earning quarter.
JGBO - This is a uplisting play. I expected that JGBO would move to a big board listing during the contest period (It actually moved to Nasdaq listing last Friday). This may be the catalyst to boost the share price. Very low valuation with forward PE=4 and P/B less than 1. Majority book value is in cash.
CHGY - This is also a uplisting play together with low valuation. I expected that uplisting to AMEX would occur between July and September this year. It is traded at forward PE=5 for this year. It had appointed 3 independent board directors last Friday. It is getting closer to AMEX listing. It looks like a storng Q2 earning report next month with smooth coal production and higher coal price in Q2 per my discussion with the company.
FEEC - CBM business is booming in China and FEEC has the best CBM blocks in China with lots of gas (18 -24 TCF gas in place). Gas sale agreement is expected to be signed in June or July. Chinese gas reserve number may be available in Q2. Commercial gas sale is expected in Q3. SEC gas reserve may be available in Q4. The deal between Arrow and FEEC may be approved by Chinese Government in August. The short term risk is dilution by a possible equity financing.
NIV - Trailing price/earning less than 4 and Nasdaq listing. This is a cheap stock for one of the major producers of audio and viedo products in China. The business still looks good going forward.
SECX - Very low P/S =0.03 and a good earning report in the latest quarter is the reason I picked it for the contest. Technically, it formed a good base and any good news or earning number next Q may pop it.
Northern
nsomniyak challenge (better late than never):
$CASH$--no explanation need.
MED--This diet program/products company is a re-pick from the last contest. They are on track to grow their earnings, I guess, but they haven't opened new centers lately which bugs me. I doubt that I'll finish the contest with MED.
OPCO.ob--This pet supply company has consistently grown its revenues. I own this company and think that eventually it will go to $1 and beyond. This little company seems solid and imo, there is not a lot of risk in owning Our Pets. Of course, anything can come out of left field and ruin an investment. Think BP.
TGA--Aaah, this faithful friend is a small Canadian oil and gas country that drills primarily in Egypt and Yemen. Hardly deepwater oil. Their recent success in drilling wells in Egypt bodes will for the future, imo. Good management. My real-world price target is $10. For this contest, it might already have maxed out..
VKNG--This is my wild card. Here is what they do: "Viking Systems, Inc. (OTCBB:VKNG - News) is a leading worldwide developer, manufacturer and marketer of 2D and 3D visualization solutions for complex minimally invasive surgery. The Company partners with medical device companies and healthcare facilities to provide surgeons with proprietary visualization systems enabling minimally invasive surgical procedures, which reduce patient trauma and recovery time." Zero debt and a float of around 35M. U can buy 4 shares for what a lotto ticket costs.
Their new 3D system should be out later this year. I have high hopes for this stock (outside of the contest).
VSR: Versar is a government contractor. Specifically, "Versar, Inc. provides various professional services to the government and private sector with solutions for infrastructure, facilities management, construction, environmental quality, defense, and homeland security needs in the United States and internationally."
Versar has done a lot of work for the U.S. DOD in Afghanistan and Iraq. They have domestic operations in the U.S. also. This is VERY interesting, imo:
"BAGHDAD, May 26 (Reuters) - Iraq has shortlisted eight foreign firms for the construction of a $3 billion metro rail through the capital Baghdad as it seeks to rebuild infrastructure damaged by decades of war and underinvestment.
Baghdad's municipality media office said on Wednesday the companies -- which include British engineering consultancy firm WS Atkins (ATKW.L) and U.S. project management company Versar (VSR.A) -- would have to present their bids to the project consultants, French engineering group Systra.

NSOM challenge picks
DGSE - Company sells bullion, jewelry and coins. There isn't much to like in their last couple earnings reports however I picked it for 2 reasons. The first was a pending settlement of debt which has now happened. They will eliminate about 11 million in debt from their balance sheet and presumably record a large one time gain. The second reason is the company is suggesting they are going to have a blowout quarter with revenues in the 30 million plus range which is about a 70% sequential increase and should result in EPS of between .10 and .20 depending on margins. Looks like a bargain in the 2's.
SYBR - Interesting case here. Its cheap on the surface in terms of earnings trading around .80 with eps of .04 and .05 the last 2 quarters. I added this one on a speculative bet. The company is rolling out a Paula Deen cake mix line and I noticed their inventory levels doubled this quarter to the highest I think they have ever been. I am speculating that buildup is for a wide rollout and that you could see a significant sequential increase in sales and EPS. If not its still cheap trading at a forward PE of about 4.
SMTX - EMS provider. The story is pretty well known but they have earnings momentum with .14 in eps last quarter and their outlook is strong. It looks cheap trading in the mid-3's and I see it as a victim of overzealous tech selling
KLIC - EPS of .28 last quarter but the company is guiding for a massive revenue increase in the current quarter. Analyst estimates are for .55 next Q which seems in the ballpark given their revenue guidance. Anything like that should send the stock upwards from its current 7.00 price unless there are signs tech spending is collapsing.
PNS - Another tech play. The company manufactures electronic components and provides repair services. They have put together 2 nice quarters if you take away one times from a couple quarters back. They earned .04 in the latest quarter against a 1.05 price. The company is suggesting the outlook is also strong with an expectation for improving results.
TORM - Company primarily manufactures Titanium Dioxide but also some other coating products. They earned .28 last quarter but they see huge operating leverage as revenues increase. The company seems to think they will see additional sequential increases this quarter. In addition competitors in the TIO2 market have been raising prices with several increases this year. If similar increases happen at TORM as I would expect there should be significant EPS gains in the coming quarter. The company also trades at a significant discount to tangible book value of about 12.00 a share. EPS of .50 in the current quarter is not out of the realm of possibility which I think would send this 7.00 stock well into double digits.

The winner gets... A year's subscription to IHUB....plus pride in being the #1 performer against a lot of very good stockpickers on the best stockpicking board on the internet. And, they get highlighted on the VMC Champions Board. http://www.investorshub.com/boards/board.asp?board_id=4067
ELIGIBILITY Solely up to the moderators of this board. Any contestant who is booted from IHUB during the contest is ineligible to win any individual PSLcontest.
A FEW POINTS
All picks will be "blind" picks. By that, it means they will have to be based upon the person's best guess rather than by seeing what others have done. When the picks are made, they will be deleted (hidden) from the board. Once the deadline passes, all picks by each person will be shown in the Ibox.
PSL14 will begin on Monday, May 24 and end on Friday, August 27. Everyone must have their picks in before May 21st at 4PM EST. All beginning prices will be as of the the close on Friday, May 21st.
All picks need to be done on this board and not via PM so that we have a record. Also, you can never be sure if whoever you send it to is even around or reading PMs. If you post it on the board, it is permanent and fixed in time.
We will list each person's picks in the Ibox in alphabetical order.
CONTEST RULES
Shown below are all the rules with respect to PSL15. THERE IS ONE RECENT RULE MODIFICATION.
New Rule: "Buy a Transaction"
After a contestant uses their four trades they have the right to buy up to three trades at a cost.
The first transaction costs 5% of the unit (or stock position) you are trading out of.
The second transaction costs 10% of (see above).
The third transaction costs 15% of (see above).
1) Pick exactly 6 stocks that you believe will have the greatest appreciation during the period of the contest.
2) Only cash dividends of over 10% will be adjusted for. Stock dividends and splits will always be adjusted for.
3) Each stock must be at least 25 cents as of the deadline for making your picks. If one of your stocks is below 25 cents on the close, you will have until midnight (assuming no news) to pick another stock that qualifies. If not, a cash position will be assigned to your portfolio.
4) Stocks must meet VMC earnings & reporting requirements (see explanation immediately below this list) with the exception that one WILD CARD pick will be allowed (see #16 below).
5) A minimum $5,000 average daily dollar volume for the previous three months is required on any original or any new stock. This is calculated as the Yahoo 3-month average shares traded times the closing price of the stock.
6) Foreign stocks are allowed as long as they are trackable on Yahoo. Some foreign stocks have pinky versions and that is ok.
7) One of your 6 original positions can be a cash position.
8) No options or warrants or mutual funds. ETF's are ok.
9) No limit on market cap.
10) It is not required that you disclose whether you own these stocks.
11) First come, first serve. All GROUPS of 6 must be unique. If a person already has your exact 6 choices you will need to make at least one substitution. This has not happened so far and is very unlikely.
12) You will receive 4 transactions during the contest. You can use 0, 1, 2, 3 or all four. That is up to you.
13) All transactions will be done as of the next closing price. If the transaction is done after the close, it will be as of the close of the following market day. There is a one half hour grace period to allow for UNDOING a trade - assuming there is no news involved to either part of the transaction during that half hour. This is because many closing prices are not available until 20 minutes after the close.
14) A transaction can be a trade or an unfreeze (just like it sounds). A double down (see below) is also a transaction. All transactions should be done on the PSL board - and not via PM.
DOUBLE DOWNS
--- A double down will be allowed where you can trade one of your stocks (or cash) into a "double" position of one of your other stocks (or cash).
--- Once double downed, always doubled downed. In other words, when two stocks are merged into one, they cannot be unmerged. You can trade, freeze or unfreeze the merged unit just as you would a single unit.
--- Once two stocks have been merged via a double down they cannot be double downed into another stock or another stock cannot be double downed into them. A maximum of 2+2 of the 6 units can be merged together. In other words, you can have two double downs at once with two other stocks that are not doubled - ie 4 stocks and 6 units.
--- A maximum of two double downs are allowed per contest.
--- You cannot double down until two weeks have passed - after the close of Thursday, June 3 - which will allow it to be in effect as early as January 25 - two weeks into the contest.
--- Only stocks that meet the earnings rule, the volume rule and the .25 rule can be double downed into.
15) Buy a Transaction: These are additional transactions beyond the four free ones. The first transaction costs 5%. The second transaction costs 10%. The third transaction costs 15%.
16) Any stock - whether frozen or not - can be traded for cash, or another stock. In all cases, the value of the entity that you are trading away must be reinvested in total into the new entity.
17) There will be one Wild Card allowed. One of your picks can deviate from the VMC rule - either in terms of earnings or in terms of being a non-reporting pinky.
18) You are only allowed up to two short positions.
SHORT POSITIONS: A short position must take the form of any ETF. Shown below are four double-beta shorts against the corresponding index...
--- QID: Nasdaq 100
--- SDS: S&P 500
--- MZZ: S&P MidCap 400
--- DXD: Dow Jones Industrial Average
and one single beta short.
--- DOG: Dow Jones Industrial Average
19) A stock does not trade the day AFTER you pick it.
Trade: If one stock trades - whether Stock A (Sell) Or Stock B (Buy) you get a cash position and a transaction is used. If neither stock trades, the transaction is void.
Freeze: If you freeze a stock, whether it trades the following day or not is irrelevant. The freeze takes affect.
Unfreeze: If you unfreeze a stock, the unfreeze is voided and no transaction is used.
20) The 15% rule is designed specifically to discourage picking stocks that have low liquidity. Thus risk is associated with shooting the moon on a potentially bogus trade. However, this rule is NEGATED if the first trade the following day has a dollar volume of at least $50,000 OR if the stock ends above +15% on $100,000 in dollar volume.
---If you make a trade, and the stock you bought opens the next day up 15% or more on no news (and closes above 15%), the trade is voided. The stock you sold turns into cash. 1 Transaction used.
---If you unfreeze a stock and it opens the next day at 15% or more on no news (and closes above 15%), the trade is voided. 1 Transaction used.
---If you sell or freeze a stock and it opens the next day down 15% or more on no news (and closes below 15%), the trade is voided. 1 Transaction used.
-- Own ABC. You sell or freeze. It opens +15%+. Irrelevant
-- Own ABC. You sell or freeze. It opens -15%+. Rule applies
-- Don't own ABC. You buy or unfreeze. It opens +15%+. Rule applies
-- Don't own ABC. You buy or unfreeze. It opens -15%+. Irrelevant
21) If a stock is halted for any reason and a person freezes it during the time it is halted, their price for the contest will be whatever it is frozen at AS LONG AS it remains frozen until the contest ends. Otherwise, the price will be the close of the first day of trading after the halt is lifted. Also, you cannot use those funds to buy or trade into any other stock while it is halted - just as in real life.
22) Fill/Kill will be offered to anyone who wants to not have to watch the screen every day. It will be for one week only and only one at a time per person. It is based on closing prices. Explanation of Fill/Kill: http://www.investorshub.com/boards/read_msg.asp?message_id=11239102
23) If a company gets sold during the contest, all normal rules apply. See this post. http://www.investorshub.com/boards/read_msg.asp?message_id=11259177
24) DIGIRULE: This is a rule that comes into play only at the very end of the contest and only if the championship is on the line. It is designed to prevent extremely small dollar trades from affecting the outcome.
25) The deadline for all transactions is the market close on Friday, August 20 (one week before the end of the contest). A freeze (no longer a transaction) can be made up to the last day.
EARNINGS REQUIREMENT: To qualify, a stock (other than the wild card) must meet VMC earnings rules which are explained in the IBox on the VMC board http://www.investorshub.com/boards/board.asp?board_id=3251 Essentially, it means that a stock must report** quarterly for at least a year or as long as it has been public. No exceptions. Secondly, the company must have earnings in the most recent quarter - or if not, more earnings than losses in the most recent two quarters - or if not, more earnings than losses in the most recent three quarters - or if not, more earnings than losses in the most recent four quarters. In other words, there must be some interval of time (1, 2, 3 or 4 quarters) where the company has positive earnings.
