1 week late on the CHID run...uggggh. I would hereby like to suggest adding one extra week to PSL3 to better capture moves that might take place the week after the proposed date.
;^)
FA:
6) We want to introduce the "Wild Card". This is one position of your six that can be any pinky OR any non earner or any stock that is BOTH a pinky and a non earner. Since ZCC is part of VMC, some influence should be felt by pinkies or non earners. I told KIK the other day that we would not allow pinkies. If you read that, I was just forgetting that we had agreed to the wild card which could be a non earner OR a pinky. You are only allowed one in the contest - or rather one unit of the six. You can freeze, trade or unfreeze them just like any other stocks, but you can never have two at a time. The 25 cent rule still applies.
Len
FA, Yes that is correct.
I take it that even the wild card stock has to be priced at 25 cents or greater per share, correct?
I received a PM about the contest possibly being too complicated, but I have a SIMPLE answer.
It is as simple as you need it to be. If you just want to pick six stocks, go to sleep and wake up in 3 months and see how you did, then that is fine.
On the other hand if you think you may want to make 3 transactions in 3+ months, you can.
Once the contest is underway, that is about the only choice facing you.
Len
Nice improvements, thanks for the effort you put into it.
PSL3 RULE CHANGES:
Shown below is the abridged version followed by detailed version - should you wish to read the details.
Let me preface it by saying that SSK and I went back and forth on a lot of issues all during PSL2 before coming to the conclusions we did. Also, BW has signed off on these changes. We tried to take as many concerns (or interests) of as many people as possible into account.
One note is that I misspoke to KIK the other day about pink sheet stocks.
Remember, these are not THE rules, they are just the differences in the rules between PSL2 and PSL3. We actually have hope that it will never change from here.
ABRIDGED VERSION:
1) There will be three weeks between PSL2 and PSL3. The beginning date is May 22 with the prices of the stocks as of the close of Friday, May 19. PSL3 will be 3.25 months versus 3.50 months for PSL2.
2) Three transactions will be allowed versus two. Each person can pick and choose their transactions rather than being told that they can only have 1 of this or 1 of that.
3) We added "unfreeze" to the options along with "freeze" and "trade". Each is a transaction.
4) A freeze will be allowed up to the last day. Unfreezes and trades will be cut off with two weeks to go.
5) The minimum price for a stock is 25 cents. No stocks will be allowed under 25 cents. PSL2 was 20 cents. PSL1 was 25 cents.
6) We are introducing an optional "Wild Card" pick. This can be either a pinky or a non-earner, or both. The wild card can only be one of your 6 picks.
7) The 15% rule will remain. If a stock trades below the 15% parameter on the open of the next day, the person will be given the option by the end of the day to take the lower opening price. They use up a transaction either way - whether they opt for the lower price or not. Thus risk is associated with shooting the moon on a potentially bogus trade.
8) Fill/Kill will be offered to anyone who wants to not have to watch the screen every day. It will be for one week only and only one at a time per person.
9) Later during the contest, we will unveil the DigiRule (as I call it). This will be to deal with a situation whereby an $18 trade with seconds to go costs someone the championship. We will gladly listen to suggestions on this.
DETAILED VERSION:
1a) PSL3 will be 3.25 months instead of 3.5 months. R59 made the suggestion of waiting until the May 19th close versus the May 12th close because of many 10Q's that will be filed that week. Since the objective is to make informed decisions, it seems logical to wait one additional week.
1b) Along the schedule lines, we plan on making PSL4 only 3.0 months - ending it on December 15th so that there is a full month between PSL4 and PSL5 and it does not conflict with the holidays. We whould be able to follow the same pattern each year - 3.5 months, 3.25 months and 3.0 months. Also, all contests will begin with a Friday close and end with a Friday close.
2) We feel that each person should be allowed 3 "transactions" instead of 2. In PSL2, we allowed 1 trade and 1 freeze - which was highly superior over PSL1. However, we think that instead of limiting a person to whether something should be a trade or a freeze, that we should allow them the flexibility to decide for themselves how they want to use their "transactions". We thought that three would be preferable because, although it is more work on our part (mostly SSK), it allows each person to come a little closer to mimicking their real world investment methodology.
3) We decided to add an "unfreeze". It is just what it sounds like. In PSL2, once you froze a stock, you were stuck. Many times, a stock might go parabolic and you want to take advantage of a sell-off, so you freeze. However, you may want to "buy" it back after the drop. That would be an "unfreeze". An unfreeze would be treated just like a freeze or a trade - one transaction each. You get 3 transactions in PSL3 and any of the three can be any of combination the 3 types of transactions.
4) In PSL2, once we entered the final two weeks, we did not allow a freeze or a trade. In PSL3, we have decided that we will allow defensive transactions up to the end. A defensive transaction is a freeze. However, we think that offensive transactions (trades and unfreezes) should be halted with two weeks to go.
5) PSL1 had a minimum of 25 cents. If you picked under that, you were required to have a basis of 25 cents, so you started off in the hole. For PSL2, we made it 20 cents, but that didn't change anything. So, for PSL3, we are going back to 25 cents - no exceptions. If a person picks a stock under 30 cents, they should provide a back-up in case it closes under 25 cents. We will use the back-up if it does. If they did not provide a back-up, we will give them until midnight EST that day (Friday) to pick another stock (assuming no news) as a replacement. If the time expires and they have no back-up or have not picked a replacement, they will be given a 1/6 unit in cash.
7) The 15% rule is designed to prevent taking advantage of insane outlyer trades that have no bearing on reality. If a stock usually trades at 50 cents and closes at a $1.00 and someone freezes or trades it just before the close, the trade will not go through if the opening trade the next day is less than 85 cents. However, they will be given the option of making the trade at the lower price if they want. It is somewhat of a freebie because if it opened at 75 cents and near the close was at 50, they will say no. If it opened at 75 cents and near the close was at $1.00, they will say yes. Still, it is an option that they have. They have to decide by the end of trading on that day or else the trade is negated. --- However, they use up a transaction either way - whether the trade does, or does not, go through - is, or is not, accepted. So, there is risk involved. You could lose a transaction if you try to "go for it" on a probable bogus close. The only exception to losing a transaction is if there are no trades the next day. Then the trade is negated with no loss of a transaction.
8) Fill/Kill is an option that we are extending. If someone wants to go away and doesn't plan to watch the board, just like with a broker, they can say that they want to sell, freeze or unfreeze a stock assuming a certain price is reached. The Fill/Kill will expire in one week. A person can only have one Fill/Kill active at a time. It can be rescinded at any time and a person can supercede a Kill/Fill with another transaction involving the same stock.
9) We have not yet dealt with the DigiRule, but there certainly will be some rule on the last day covering what happened with Digitech. It has nothing to do with the contest per say and we have plenty of time to deal with a solution.
Len
What a luck!
I was very busy with my thesis defense during the last week, and could not reply all those congrats from you guys.
Now it's done, and I would like to thank you all for the congrats.
I realize that I will have plenty of time to do some research on stocks for PSL3. I really like that!
At the biginning of PSL2, I wasn't able to find 6 picks for the contests. So I asked Lentinman whether I can leave some spots empty, but the answer was "No." So I added two stocks that I didn't like very much to my list. Those two--"CHCI" and "EFJI" turned out to have bad performance in the past three months.
It's good to see that GV and KSWW.OB, which I thought undervalued a while ago, have been doing quite well recently. My biggest position is KSWW.OB, so I hope this baby can make me some serious money in the near future.
Let's move on, and hopefully I can find some nice picks for PSL3.
Bleu:
Marilyn, I stand corrected! There is one. I hope you will participate in PSL3.
Len
It's been fun reading about the absence of females on in the contest, but I can assure you that there is at least one! I entered believing I would have time to add to the discusssion, but I still work, one of those 5a.m.-10p.m jobs, and just haven't had time to do much dd.
Early on I wanted to trade DWCH, but couldn't find what I thought was a great pick. I wish I had traded DWCH for CFK when I actually bought CFK, but waited too long. I guess most of us wish we could have made better trades and freezes.
I ranked from mid-20s to mid-30s most of the time, and considering I started trading in August 2003, without a business background and no knowledge of stocks, I think I did a pretty good job of keeping up with you guys. I'm looking foward to the next contest, and hopefully I can add to the dialog.
Thanks to all of you,
Marilyn
I'm in mid-MO so I enjoyed the weather watch, too.
KIK:
Well, it's looking more and more like you really CAN use it!
Ironic, isn't it that within hours of my post about a 1 cent stock going to the moon and bastardizing the contest, your 1 cent stock did just that (less the bastardizing of the contest). Frankly, that would have ruined PSL3 IMO.
BTW: CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
Len
Haha...that's what I thought!! That's some good stuff. Thanks Lent!
And to think I had PGPM teed up for PSL3 if the minimum price restriction was waived...
Biegle:
You asked.
There were 61 people who participated in both PSL1 and PSL2. Your rank?
#61 with an average ranking of 75.
Of course, all that means is that you are due to win PSL3!
Len
Who cares about knowledge's ideas...the man just had a 3-hour 13 bagger!! Nice call Knoweldge!
knowledge, my .02 on your ideas:
Agree with 1), 1a), 2) and 4). Disagree w/ 3) because I think that the freeze & trade really helped to solidify just how good some of the individual picks were DURING the period as opposed to being measured on how good picks were on a given day (4/28).
I'm all-for any dollar amount up to $50 :^D
Agree about the removal of minimum price regs.
I'm up 5% today! One of my big-spread, illiquid stocks made a trade today at the ask (a whopping 62 bucks) and is now up 70%. Too bad it's a day late!!
Come on...can't I get in this list? I know I'm definitely not to 40, but I'd like to see where I ended up.
KIK:
I appreciate your thoughts. However, before I go any further, the rules for PSL3 are already set. We've had two contests to figure out what works the best.
Nevertheless, I will address your points.
"1) I'm strongly opposed to any sort of volume restrictions on picks for the next contest."
At this time there is no expectation of any restriction that has to do with volume. I'm not saying there shouldn't be, but there isn't. I'm also not saying there won't be, but there isn't. I expect to think a lot about it during PSL3.
"1a) I don't believe there should be any minimum starting price for stocks as long as they are profitable and fully-reporting.
That is a fair opinion to have. I'm certainly not saying it isn't. However, the odds of a freak stock going from 1 cent to 50 cents are not that unrealistic. As far as I'm concerned, that bastardizes the contest. We could have 80-100 people out there all with a ton of 1 cent stocks just hoping for freak of nature spike. It just isn't what we do in general on VMC. If the portfolio had 50 stocks instead of 6, then maybe it would be ok to allow a handful of stocks under a dime, but with only six, it just isn't going to happen. PSL 3 will require a 25 cent minimum. Personally, I would be happy if it were 40 cents, but we (SSK, Bob and myself) can agree on 25 cents. There are at least 1,000 VMC stocks that are 25 cents or more, so nobody needs to claim they are being restricted.
"2) I think pink sheet companies which are fully-reporting/up-to-date on SEC filings should be allowed. ARSD is an example. I'd like to hear an argument against...besides pink sheet paranoia, that is.
The rule has nothing to do with pink sheet paranoia. The rational is simple. VMC is predicated upon two rules - earnings and reporting. This is a VMC board and a VMC contest. It is designed to replicate VMC performance and trading as much as possible (on average). Some of us own pinkies to be sure. And, we could say something like one pink allowed and maybe we will on PSL4, but the reason against it for now is that pinks MAY have earnings and they MAY report. However, what is the definition of "reporting"? No pinks report exactly alike. ALL BB's do or they get delisted. It is tough enough to invest in stocks that are so weakly covered as BB's. Pinkies are a total crapshoot because they have zero accountability to the SEC. What you consider "reporting" is very possibly not what someone else considers "reporting". Thus, with no objective standard (as is the case with BB's), they fail, or nearly fail, the basic fundamental premise that VMC was created upon. I'm not saying this is a permanent position, but it is for now.
"3) I know this is a long-shot, but I think the trade and freeze rules should be junked. They're gimmicky, arbitrary, and, most importantly, they've destroyed any comparability between PSL1 and PSL2 results. Perhaps a shadow contest say, PSL3a and PSL3b, with (a) allowing trade/freeze and (b) with original PSL1 rules -- but with the same 6 starting picks for each --could be arranged."
For starters, I totally disagree with the characterization that they are gimmicky and arbitrary. I can't even begin to see what makes them "gimmicky". As to being "arbitrary", the only thing arbitrary about them is that each person can arbitrarily decide what they want to do with them.
I've said this before, but the purpose of the PSL contests is to help (over time) determine who are the best stock PICKERS as well as who are the best stock TRADERS. Since you and I and everyone else does both "picking" and "trading" every single day, then any contest that did not include both aspects of it would not reasonably represent our real world investments.
I disagree that they have destroyed any "comparability" between PSL1 and PSL2. I pointed out in an earlier post that the gain from the trades and freezes that were made was a mere 9% and lots of people never used any freezes or trades, much less both. Besides, even if I agreed with you, PSL3 would "destroy any comparability" between EITHER PSL1 OR PSL2. It is going to coincide with one or the other. Trades and freezes are permanent as far as I can see. If somebody makes some bad picks, they can correct it just like in real life. That keeps interest in the contest. After 10 PSL's, I don't think any miniscule issues about some minor differences between any of the specific PSL contests will be relevant.
I imagine that SSK could relatively easily maintain an "original" portfolio. Certainly that would be a ton less work than the one with trades and freezes. However, even if a ton less work, it is "more" work in total. So, he can speak for himself on that. I think it is a nice suggestion and it would be nice to know who would have won with no trades or freezes. They probably deserve special mention.
"4) Finally, and I really want to get a discussion going on this one, let's have all entrants put up $5 each and play it winner-take-all."
Maybe the day will come when that is feasible, but it sure ain't today! Collecting the money in a time frame available would not only be almost impossible, but a nightmare to do. Besides all that, if the same thing that happened to DIGI at 3:59:50 which screwed him out of first place were to happen with money on the line, there would be hell to pay. I just don't feel like paying it and I'm sure SSK doesn't either. In the long range plan for PSL, it could, conceivably be an option. But, before money gets involved we are going to make sure every conceivable issue has been dealt with and every conceivable loophole accounted for.
Len
VMC's risky?
VMC's are indeed substantially risky, for reasons beyond just business risk. There's liquidity risk, .OB exchange risk, etc.
But the mistake is when VMC risk allows one to come to a conclusion in a vacuum. It's when risk AND return are considered, do I believe that VMC's (especially the ones targeted on this board and the VMC board) far exceed the risk-adjusted return of virtually any other publicly traded security.
Oh, and as for Beta, considering the gamut of VMC's picked on this board, I wonder whether the Beta is >= or < 1.
Knowledge: My view differs from yours on thinly traded stocks. I think it's FAR more impressive when a stock goes from $4 to $8 on 100k volume per day than one that goes from $0.04 to $0.08 and trades a 'few thousand shares a week'.
You say it's equally impressive and profitable ? That may be true if you have only few hundred bucks to invest. Lets say a stock is trading at $0.04 with volume at a few thousand shares a week. That means perhaps 1k volume per day or $40 of volume. That's STRICTLY A JOKE ! Profits on a double on a day's volume would barely cover commissions.
With a stock trading at $4 and doing 100k per day of volume one could easily take a position of $100k .... a double on that would be very impressive !
I will enjoy PSL3 regardless of whether there are any DOLLAR volume restrictions or not, however maybe we should consider naming two winners .... the overall winner, and in my view, a more important winner, the one who's picks all meet a minimum average daily DOLLAR volume.
I do agree with you on the subject of pink sheet stocks, as I have made sizable profits on several of these. Particularly fulling reporting issues like ARSD and SNKI are worthy of the contest. Others like AXLE and TCRS which release financials may also be appropriate.
Thoughts for PSL3:
1) I'm strongly opposed to any sort of volume restrictions on picks for the next contest. If a stock goes up 50/100/200% yet trades only a few thousand shares a week, is that somehow a less impressive stock pick?! I've made a living now for 10 years in just such stocks and believe me with patience, wits, and experience you CAN get in and out of good size positions in such stocks.
1a) I don't believe there should be any minimum starting price for stocks as long as they are profitable and fully-reporting. Once again, is it somehow less impressive and/or profitable for a stock to go from $.04 to $.08 than it is from $4 to $8??
2) I think pink sheet companies which are fully-reporting/up-to-date on SEC filings should be allowed. ARSD is an example. I'd like to hear an argument against...besides pink sheet paranoia, that is.
3) I know this is a long-shot, but I think the trade and freeze rules should be junked. They're gimmicky, arbitrary, and, most importantly, they've destroyed any comparability between PSL1 and PSL2 results. Perhaps a shadow contest say, PSL3a and PSL3b, with (a) allowing trade/freeze and (b) with original PSL1 rules -- but with the same 6 starting picks for each --could be arranged (I know SSK and Len are casting about for some extra work...so it shouldn't be too much to add :)
4) Finally, and I really want to get a discussion going on this one, let's have all entrants put up $5 each and play it winner-take-all. With 90+ entries, that's a few hundred bucks of extra motivation/competition ... not to mention cold hard bragging rights.
FA:
I just figured April 13 since the market was closed on April 14.
By not making the trade, the value of the TMR unit was $884. If you had made the trade, the value of the TMR/HEC unit would have been $1,036. That would have been a +17.2% benefit on that unit. Roughly, you can divide that by 6 (+2.9%) to see what it would have done to your overall return.
Len
Stanu:
Well, theoretically, the 9% means that our TRADES produce results too.
Len
He's the boss, guess he prefers the night shift
Why there isn't any/many women in VMC and PSL? are they less interested in the stock market or investing in general?
I went to the chicago board of trade trading floor a couple times about 7 years ago and I can't remember seeing a single women on the floor.
I didn't feel weird back then but now in hindsight, I'm curious why there is no or very few men in these profession (investing, MM, floor trader etc)
Stan
FA, this is regular hours for Len.. he's often still up till very late at night or early in the morning....
Stan
What is the significance of this 9% advantage..
Could it signifies that we as a group are a good market timers too?
it will be interesting to see across the next 2 or 3 PSLs and if we are consistently doing better on the trade and freeze caompare not trading or freezing it..
Stan
Of course, always take the money and run, eh?
Len, if you get bored, tell me what the return of trading TMR for HEC on the last final date of April 14th would've done for me...
BENEFIT OF TRADES OR FREEZES ??
There were 59 trades or freezes in PSL2.
The value of the 59 stocks BEFORE the trade or freeze is $106,183.
The value of the 59 stocks AFTER the trade or freeze is $116,770 (+9.97%).
Here are the best returns and the worst returns for all trades and freezes. Minimum +/- 30%. Remember, the issue is what would the same trade have yielded if it had not been made versus the fact that it WAS made.

Thanks Len.. now that is a suspense... would you do me a favor len.. if Pikecomes ahead... just drop the case.. and forget about the whole additional decimal thing... will you..? lol.. jk...
btw, last night I watched this Bruce willis movie.. 16 blocks. it's pretty good...
all right I'm heading to bed now...
on second thought.. maybe it's better to just leave it as tied... hehhehe... tied for #1 for real human leader..
it's a funny situation actually.. kind of the psychology test.. would you rather a guarantee $50 or a 50-50 chance of $0 or $100... I saw that in the irrational exuberrance investing book.
All the best Pike....
Stan
Maybe we need to rename "MR SHEEP" into the "VMC PORTFOLIO"?
Or the "VMC3 PORTFOLIO" for next contest... or maybe "THE IDEAL VMC3 PORTFOLIO"
Pike/Stan:
Yes, you are tied if you ignore the sheep. Actually, it is 66.895%.
However, there is no question that it isn't REALLY tied. I'm taking SSK's 2 decimal place returns as my basis. He would have to go back and see what you both did going out at least one more decimal place to determine who is the REAL human leader at this point.
Len
FA, how can you be so sure about "surely there's got to be at least one female throwing in 6 picks in these contests"?
I always wonder if that is the case... I'm sorry ladies, if you are in this board or in PSL2..
I'm not a jerk nor a chauvinist, but for a while, I did think that I was dealing with all Mr here...
I'd welcome all the smart stock picking ladies in this board....
and having said all that, and thking again what FA said, maybe the winner of the PSLs is a she.. :)
Stan
Big pike, we're tied at the top, though only if we inore the sheep...
looks like we can only go downwards from here (since Mr sheep isjust too powerful IMO)... lol....
Stan
The whole group has done fantastic, that's why there's so much faith in what "MR SHEEP" picks, and besides, why's the sheep a Mr. anyways, surely there's got to be at least one female throwing in 6 picks in these contests?
Maybe we should rename these picks to something else that deserves more recognition, cause I think that's the thing that has surprised me about this group is how well everyone came together and made their picks back in January, I would've never expected the most popular 6 picks to do even better than last contests...
congrats FA, #3 in most improved player
also to SHMO and ABH
If Mr Sheep continue to be at the top for the average across PSLs, I think there is definitely something special about our group. which is good to hear, otherwise we should wonder whether what we are doing is correct/useful or not
Stan
MR SHEEP, woo hoo
Len, nice to see those additional metrics... I was about to suggest 2 of them (the total rank added from both PSL and the average return on both contest) and you already have them.
Thanks,
Stan
Woo hoo, feels good to be apart of the group, CONGRATS ALL
heheh. LJ.. in this game, freezing will not take you anywhere (though I think I did pretty good still).. we need to parlay/trade the winner with another winner... I'm sure that's what digi, networm, abv did
just like peter lynch said in his boon one up on wallstreet: the first 5 bagger make it 5 bagger but the next 5 bagger will make it 25 bagger..
500% parlay with another 500% become 2500%.. (or 2400% if you remove the cost)
although peter lynch forgot to mention that when you parlay the risk also increase a lot... (versus seling some and buy some other stocks too.. kind of similar with the concept of rebalancing or adding diversification)...
though I like doing concentration more though... versus diworsesification... :)
