Mining Company Alleges Diamond Trader Stashed Money in New York Real Estate
10:32 AM ET 5/7/20 | Dow Jones
By Konrad Putzier
A Brazilian mining company is turning to a U.S. court to obtain information related to its allegations that an Israeli diamond trader made undisclosed investments in New York City real estate.
In 2019, Vale SA won a $2 billion arbitration award against a company tied to diamond trader Beny Steinmetz. The Brazilian miner has been trying to collect the money since then, and it has been trying to track Mr. Steinmetz's holdings around the world.
Vale is asking a U.S. District Court in New York to order a number of real-estate companies to turn over information that Vale alleges could show that Mr. Steinmetz made certain property investments, according to an application for a discovery order filed last month with the court.
The mining company alleged in the filing that entities affiliated with Mr. Steinmetz invested in 12 properties in New York City and one in Chicago through a joint venture with New York developer HFZ Capital Group.
A representative for HFZ said in a statement: "HFZ Capital Group has no involvement with Benny Steinmetz or his companies. Mr. Steinmetz is not an investor in HFZ or any of its developments. For some unknown reason, Vale is casting a wide net to harass multiple real-estate companies and drag them into their foreign dispute. HFZ has no information relevant to that dispute and we look forward to the court clarifying these details in the near future."
In a statement, a spokesman for Mr. Steinmetz accused Vale of pursuing a "budget-less scorched earth litigation policy." Vale declined to comment.
The April filing adds a new wrinkle to one of the mining world's most high-profile legal disputes.
A decade ago, Vale and Mr. Steinmetz's BSG Resources Ltd. launched a joint venture to develop a massive iron-ore mine in Guinea. In 2014, Guinea's government revoked the venture's right to develop the mine after an investigation concluded that people close to Mr. Steinmetz bribed a previous administration.
Vale has been trying to recoup the $500 million it paid BSG for a stake in the venture, along with more than $700 million it spent developing the mine.
Following the $2 billion arbitration award in a London court, BSG Resources filed for bankruptcy in the U.S. last year, citing as its only assets a legal claim against investor George Soros.

Vale to Benefit From Ramp-Up of Production, Rising Metals Price -- Market Talk
1:46 PM ET 4/30/20 | Dow Jones
13:46 ET - Brazilian iron-ore mining giant Vale SA should benefit as it ramps up production that had been shut down in the aftermath of the Brumadinho dam disaster, as the financial overhang of that tragedy diminishes and on higher copper and nickel prices after this year, according to Christopher LaFemina, an analyst at Jefferies. Near-term risks are high because of the coronavirus crisis and its effects on the world economy, but after a short-term decline in the price of iron ore because of higher output from Vale and other miners, the price should start to get more support later in the year as the economy improves, LaFemina says. Vale reported a decline in iron-ore output in 1Q because of bad weather and unscheduled maintenance. (jeffrey.lewis@wsj.com)

Vale to Restart 330,000 Tons of Monthly Output at Timbopeba Mine Next Week
11:01 AM ET 4/29/20 | Dow Jones
By Jeffrey T. Lewis
SAO PAULO--Brazilian iron-ore mining giant Vale SA will resume dry processing operations at its Timbopeba mine in Minas Gerais state next week, boosting monthly production by about 330,000 metric tons, the company said Wednesday.
Operations at the mine were suspended by court order in March of last year amid concerns about the safety of a mining waste dam at the site in the aftermath of the dam collapse disaster in Brumadinho that took the lives of 270 people the previous January.
Dry processing operations, which don't produce the kind of waste that accumulates behind dams and that flooded parts of Brumadinho last year, were authorised by Minas Gerais state authorities at Timbopeba.
Vale said it expects to restart wet processing activities at the mine in the fourth quarter of this year, which would permit Timbopeba to achieve full production capacity of about 1 million tons per month.
The resumption at Timbopeba of dry processing next week, and the expected restart of wet processing in the fourth quarter, are both included in Vale's production guidance for this year of 310 million tons-330 million tons, the company said.

I feel Nickel and Copper both will make a Major move in the coming months. Regardless of a recession or depression. China is not the China of 2008
They a massively bigger and yes the World May see a depression but Minerals like Copper and Nickel could be in high demand as production shortages will loom for a very long time.

The decline of production is because of VALE and they still go up. It doesn't make sense other than being a complete Wall Street, Central Bank scam from fraudulent banks actively pumping the wrong stock and shorting the others.
We need Reform.

Lmao!
Sounds like you have realized you shouldn’t have shorted this one.
Why don’t you check out the cash reserves this company has.
Also read up on how over a billion dollars has already been put aside (court mandated mind you) by Vale to deal with the class action.
They are a very successful and profitable company working mines of various minerals all over the world. While what happened in Brazil was a disaster, and a tragedy, it seems to be someone they are well equipped to handle financially, imo.
Oh, and world bank. LMAO!

Markets are never wrong, although opinions often are!
$VALE Rothchild/Central Bank SCAM! RUN! It's going to crash hard.
This scam has no reason to be going up as any ore shortage in the market is the result of VALE's mining problems and accidents.
So now The scam artists of the Central Bank who are JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, Credit Suisse and Deutsche Bank are running this pig up to simply dump the loser stock on new victims of the disaster.
Multiple lawsuits and billions in damages will be the end of VALE as we know it.
The scam artist Banks pumping this pig even include the country of Brazil, one of VALE's top shareholders. They are pumping and dumping!
The con artists are selling their shares to the uneducated. Don't be fooled as this company is in serious trouble.
Yet another class action law suit by shareholders and continues to rise off blatant manipulation.
Well, as of tomorrow, March 1st, the company is paying out the annual (and optional) bonuses to ALL employees across the globe, and it’s at the highest percentage in years. 10’s of millions of dollars.
However, they did not pay the annual bonus to their VP level employees, but that was more of a public relations decision made not long after the tragedy.
So, if they were in any kind of financial trouble, it would have been reduced or not paid out at all.
This company is flush with cash. It’s well known that their cash reserves are in the low billions. This stock is a solid buy at this price, in my opinion.
LoL, The CRASH will come. SMH, Be prepared. Any stock that is manipulated by the Central Bank is going to crash hard especially this one who's largest shareholder is the country of Brazil.
Fabricated economies and their manipulated securities are in for a rude awakening. There is still time to adjust but winding down to the point of no return.
I never said it was going to happen the next day. SMH but it is inevitable. Good luck.
Where’s the crash? Lol
It’s a very strong company with mining operations all around the world - and not just iron ore.
They have enormous cash reserves and a very ethical leadership group.
No crash here. Even with such a sad disaster.
Not true, VALE will crash hard. The reducing of said 10% production will most likely have an actual of 25% to 40% as another operation may be shut down in Brazil for must needed structure and infrastructure evaluations, assessments, and revisions including revising it's estimates as production will be extremely lower.
S11D will also take a hit being comprised of low grade IO where sinter feed and fines is no longer in demand while China doesn't even want it as new emission standards have been adopted reducing pollution to air quality.
The market fed people a bunch of shit with the lump IO as anybody can see from an aerial photo. China simply doesn't want low grade material anymore, in fact, nobody does.
There are better miners out there than VALE who is going to be in a shit load of heat from this one and in court for years. Their only safety net that is soon to collapse is that Brazil itself is a shareholder and why it's keeping balance and that's it. The rest is just smoke and mirrors.
RUN - VALE is being pumped and manipulated by wall street and it's going to crash hard. Get out with a profit before the falling knife as there is no future in VALE with another crumbled dam reducing production.
They said production will decrease by 10% while experts predict 60% as many VALE operations will be closed for maintenance in Brazil while their S11D in Australia is no more than garbage sinter sand that no market even wants anymore, not even China.
The tides will turn on this heavily pumped garbage stock.
Nothing but a fraudulent market. Futures are rocketing with no stop but the fraudulent manipulators continue to ignore these facts and short the living hell out of the sector while supporting the Wrong companies.
The entire market is a full blown SCAM with the fraudulent SEC and FINRA in on it.
When is the fraudulent Wall Street going to be stopped.
True. 3x average volume but why the buying after such a disaster??
Lots and lots of buys coming through.
I’d be careful shorting this one. They have operations all around the world, and they have been having an excellent couple of years financially.
Over a billion dollars traded on this stock today. Incredible
