That's fantastic technology! I have to give StockCharts a lot of credit. It's still hard to figure out the relationship - as you stated, but if it can be done, that's the way to do it.
Good job.
Len
lentinman,
The correlation, if any, may remain one of the unknowns in the universe!!
I have added the usd index to this chart.
Also you will see (hopefully) that the (days) is set at 200, instead of dragging the days time line out, put your cursor on the 200 days and while holding down on either mouse button you can drag the days time frame back and forth from Feb of 99 to Dec 08.

Split:
That's interesting. I drug the time line over to the beginning of 2006 (758 days) and I can't make heads or tails out of the relationships. So many extenuating variables - not the least of which is the dollar.
Len

FA:
CNBC uses the WTI Cushing Spot for Oil and the 24-hour Spot (bid) for Gold. I see nothing wrong with using either.
Irregardless ( yes, it IS a word! http://investorshub.advfn.com/boards/read_msg.aspx?Message_id=32578212 ), it doesn't really matter until December 31st - and even then, only if it were a super close race.
Len
What do you use on Google, do you use kitco? Reason I ask is because there are many different ways to determine the price, in fact, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't CNBC quote the leading futures contract price?
FA:
Most of the time I just check CNBC after the close on Fridays. However, if I miss that, I just go to google.
Len
Hi Len,
What ticker do you use to track the price of gold and oil?
Thanks, #msg-34430119
The DOW/economy could crash while oil and gold rocket upwards because of a falling dollar. I guess it just depends on how the world's economy will be doing. I thought that was strange also that LJ was right on about oil and the DOW but almost last in gold. I just think gold has a high demand because many people assume the dollar will crash. In my opinion, oil will go up a lot in this scenario.
Len, gold could be the riskiest now of the 3 choices...LJ
Len, gold can appear a safe haven as investors store sales proceeds from falling asset classes and back and forth between different currencies that are retreating along with other asset classes...
The currencies retreat like dancers against each other as countries keep viaing for a better currency rate of exchange against other currencies to help their own trade prospects...The US didn't support a falling dollar because that is not the best thing for large corporate global competitiveness...
So, just maybe, gold is more connected to currency exchanges than asset valuations...
Or, it is only a laggard in the drop scheme...
If you will review the long term gold charts you will notice $30 to $40 gold per ounce until Opec took control of global oil pricing in the early 70s...Gold bugs read the following rises as a reaction to the US moving off the gold standard...
Is Opec in control of falling oil prices now?...Don't appear to be...
If Opec countries have stored vast amounts of wealth in gold and need more money than oil sales produce to balance budgets what happens?...
Only a thesis of a calamity...Timing is only a guessing game...LJ
What is the relationship between D & O & G?
It's one thing to do what LJ did and get the overall closest based on a percentage differential, but what intrigues me is the relationships between these three "things" - DOW, OIL and GOLD.
LJ was #1 in the DOW and OIL, but 50th in GOLD. He correctly assumed that the DOW and OIL would crash, but he incorrectly assumed GOLD would crash at the same time. And, that's what is interesting to me. Even if God came down and told you that (for example) the DOW would be 5,000, what does that tell you about OIL or GOLD? Let's say God said "You can pick whichever one of the three you want and I will tell you what it will be." And, so you do. Which would you pick and does that give you a leg up on the other two?
I confess. JSim and I talked about it at some length and we can't really determine what one would do (necessarily) if another did X. I suppose the most likely correlation would be if the DOW was down a ton, so would OIL, but it could be that business and economy are getting killed BECAUSE OIL is high. It all depends on the timing because eventually OIL would follow the economy unless there were a war in the middle east. Of course, if the DOW crashed, one might assume GOLD would also crash as LJ did. But, if the DOW crashed because the financial system collapsed, then GOLD could skyrocket. Thus, the whole "relationship" issue is interesting and discovering the relationship between the three is almost as impressive as the percentage differential.
Here are the top-5 people who had the lowest combined rankings. In the case of LJ, he had 52 (1+1+50). But, that doesn't imply that he understands the relationships as well as someone else might. I'm going to call Death2Taxes the winner of the Mr. Relationship award for 2008.
DOW OIL GOLD TOTAL
Here are the top-5 people who had the best "worst". I'm going to call this person the Mrs. Relationship winner. Ok, in this case Death is both Mr. and Mrs., but it could easily be two different people. Besides, Death has always had a side of him that we would rather not talk about!

2008, it looked like Chrysler was basically bk when they started discounting trucks to 40% to 50% off the sticker price in early fall...
Big Market averages looked to have corrected for some steep excesses created over years by liquidity excesses in the real estate sector within several days when the results of no liquidity left emerged...
Unemployment jumped much faster with almost panic company responses to overplanning as liquidity growth was questioned...
2008 saw little meaningful, purpose-driven relief for a reeling real estate sector...
Commodity prices could not hold up to the Big 3 whammy of US real estate market in recession, China Olympic build out complete, and Loss of liquidity from real estate borrowing starting to impact overall economy much harder...
Perfect Storm in 2008 for most asset values as an Election Year Spending and Promise Spree trumped out long term planning...LJ

FINAL RESULTS FOR 2008:
I will have four posts after midnight.
1) The final DOW standings
2) The final OIL standings
3) The final GOLD standings
4) The final DOG standings
I will also post (asap) the list of contestants for 2009 and their picks. Make sure you check them for accuracy.
I will add one more hypothetical person to the list. I'm going to call him Mr. Median. Median is, of course, a type of "average". In this average case, it means the mid-point of the picks - half above and half below. I thought that was better than Mr. Mean because the Mean could easily be skewed by someone picking the DOW at 2,000 or 20,000 (for example). I will also go back and create a Mr. Median for 2008 and include him in the standings.

I've been wondering when someone was going to apply the Gold = 10 x Oil and Dow = 10 x Gold formula.

Only be about 29 points down per trading day or about a third of a percent down for each trading day from around 8,600...
You make it seem like a lot for a whole year...LJ
You're right!
I use that calculator in bear markets...does wonders for my P/L.
You have an interesting calculator. Mine says Dow 1150 is an 87% drop from here.
Up 30% sure sounds bullish to me!
Dow 1150 is bullish? I'd hate to see your bearish prediction.
DOW 1150
OIL 72
GOLD 900
So shoot me, I am always a long term bull. Dan
Dow: 8,700
Gold: $950
Oil: $65
My guesses
