Q4 Roadmap Update and AMA DECEMBER 27, 2022
Before we close out another year in Upland, it’s time to take a look back at the major developments over the past quarter and look ahead to all the great things on the horizon.
?
Let’s take a moment to reflect on one of the biggest achievements of the year: metaventures. Did you know that Upland’s player-owned businesses (aka Metaventures) saw 310% growth quarter over quarter in economic activity so far this year? This is due to Metaventures doubling quarter over quarter in 2022. In December alone, Metaventures have totaled a record 263 million UPX in gross sales – and the month isn’t over! This is up from a fantastic 145 million UPX in gross sales in November. December’s huge Metaventure sales numbers come from a record-high of more than 31,000 transactions! Congratulations to Metaventure owners and all players supporting local businesses in Upland!
?
There’s another significant milestone on the horizon – the $10 million mark in player earnings via the NFT-to-USD program. Upland’s economy is a great example of how fun, community, and earning can come together to make something extraordinary. This type of real financial impact is a huge cause for celebration – which is in the works so stay tuned!
?
As we look to 2023, there will be extra emphasis on enhancing early experiences to ease the learning curve and help new players dig into the amazing things happening in Upland. We love our veteran llamas, and by making Upland more accessible and easier to learn, everyone will benefit. The community makes Upland special, and a growing player base only adds more excitement to the ecosystem.
?
The focus on new experiences, player ownership, economy updates, and major partnerships set the table for big things to come. So join us in this Q4 update for a glimpse at what’s coming and to catch up on all the recent highlights!
?
After going through the Roadmap Update article, check out our Roadmap Panel and AMA Live on YouTube and Twitch on Wednesday, December 28 at 11:00 AM PT to get the inside scoop with General Mort, X1TheGamer, and the Upland Co-Founders Idan Zuckerman and Dirk Lueth. And make sure to join the conversation and submit your questions on Reddit before the AMA!
Q1 Roadmap Goals
The following projects are currently in development. Some of these items may be delivered in Q1 2023, while others may come in Q2.
Onboarding Improvements
There are several projects in various stages of planning that we’ll unveil later in 2023. But here are some items coming soon to improve the new player experience.
Onboarding Overhaul
The community is what makes Upland work. As such, we’re putting more emphasis on growing the community with quality of life and onboarding improvements for new players. These enhancements will help people get comfortable with the growing mechanics, gameplay, and economy. What does this mean? An onboarding overhaul with new mechanics to reduce barriers to getting involved early.
Guided Gameplay
In addition to an onboarding overhaul, we’re also looking into how we can visually guide players through several early-game activities. This could be anything from overlay prompts to mini-game tutorials.
Cars
Competitive Racing
After launching competitive multiplayer racing in 2022, the goal moving forward is to give players more agency and involvement in race performance and outcomes. This will make races more dynamic and interesting. Some concepts in development include adding driver statistics for Block Explorers that directly impact performance. Additions to car statistics are also on the way. Another feature in development, lane switching, will add more player input that builds tension and timing into laps.
Race History
Who will be the Mario Andretti or Dale Earnhardt of Upland? We’ll soon find out! Soon, players will be able to see race result history. This helps build lore in Upland for the best cars and drivers and gives people bragging rights.
Mobile App Compatibility
The racing experience in 2022 was restricted to browsers. In 2023, players can get behind the driver’s seat from Android and iOS devices!
Metaventures
Structure Ornament Shops
Like Outdoor Decor Shops, a Structure Ornament Shop allows players to run a business and sell ornaments to other players. We’ve seen some incredible Structure Ornaments from Halloween and our partner Jacky Tsai. Bringing these Metaventures to neighborhoods is a natural progression of the player-owned economy.
Manufacturing Open Beta
After the successful closed beta, we’re getting ready for an open beta for Outdoor Decor item manufacturing! This gives more Factory owners plenty to do with their facilities and will ramp up player-owned commerce in Upland!
Legits
NFLPA Collection Earnings
Earnings for NFLPA Collections work similarly to the one-time UPX bonuses for property Collections. Players who complete and hold an NFLPA Collection by the end of the football season will get a one-time fixed UPX reward for each Collection. A full breakdown of NFLPA Collection earnings will be posted in 2023 – so get those NFLPA Legits into Collections soon!
Community
In-Game Chat Enhancements
In December, we launched In-Game Chat, giving players new ways to talk directly in Upland. In 2023, Chat will see improvements such as Group Chat, Neighborhood Chat, and more Global Channels (including Global Channels where players can create comment threads). More improvements are coming later in 2023 to help Chat become even better!
NFTs
Upland NFT Search and Discoverability
With the launch of new search and discoverability capabilities, Upland NFTs will be on search engines like Google! Also, the NFTs (e.g., properties, Legits, Block Explorers, etc.) can be found in Upland using a simple search function. This makes it easier to find the assets and collectibles players are looking for while giving Metaventure inventory instant reach for players and non-players!
Third-Party Development
Upland’s unique design allows a dev to connect any new or existing app/dApp to the Upland economy, community, and infrastructure. In Q1, we will continue to work on the community dev tools released in Q4 for the Upland Developer Network (UDN). With all the activity going on in the Upland economy, we’re seeing a lot of interest from third-party developers curious about the metaverse. Over 160 devs have been vetted and are actively working on their Upland connectivity. We look forward to seeing a lot of fresh third-party content throughout 2023.
Miscellaneous Developments
3D Avatars
With 3D Avatars, players will have a “humanoid” form they can use in certain situations in Upland. Players will design their avatars to their liking and use them for various immersive experiences. This may also include experiences built from Community Dev Tools.
UPX Earnings Accumulation Cap
As announced in a previous economic update, Upland is moving from a passive earnings model toward a more active earnings mechanism. Specifically, we will introduce a cap on uncollected earnings accumulation. We want to encourage players to remain as a working part of the ecosystem. The first and critical step in doing this is to have players log in. ?As such, players will be required to log in to collect their earnings before their accumulated earnings reach a certain threshold, variable by Upland status. This does not mean that Upland is placing a cap on how much players can earn. Rather, it is a cap on how much UPX can go uncollected before it stops accumulating.
City Releases
As a metaverse mapped to the real world, launching new cities is a core initiative. We can’t announce the full city launch schedule, but there is one location we can talk about. During FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM, we announced that the tournament winner would get a city release in Upland. And since Argentina took home the trophy, we’re more than happy to say that Buenos Aires is coming to Upland soon! Buenos Aires is also a perfect place for our most recent partner: the Argentina Football Association (AFA)!
Partnerships
While we can’t go into specifics until the official announcements, a few exciting partnerships are on the horizon. One adds to a major existing mechanic, while the other brings a new NFT to Upland that is guaranteed to blow players' minds. Sorry! That’s all we can say for now.
Looking Back on Q4
This was a Q4 for the ages! The past few months brought Upland forward by leaps and bounds. The features, economic updates, and partnerships launched in Q4 will go down as some of the most important things ever brought to the metaverse. Check out our recap.
Cars
Multiplayer Races
November brought a little friendly competition to the raceway as we saw the first-ever multiplayer races speed into Upland! At launch, there were four race tracks open for racing, and new tracks are on the way. These three-lap, six-car races let players test their cars against other players and AI bots. This was one of the biggest events for Upland cars and the entire ecosystem – showing that Upland is much more than a real estate simulator. And more utility and gameplay mechanics are coming!
Car Showrooms
If running a car dealership is your dream in the metaverse, you’ll love this. With the addition of Car Showrooms to Upland in October, players gained the ability to just build structures for displaying and selling cars! Coming before the year’s end, players will be able to open their Car Showrooms for business!
?
This is an important piece of Upland’s economics as Car Showrooms give players an avenue to sell or acquire a car. Two new Showroom designs – the Medium and Large Showrooms – opened to give players enough space to house car inventory. In the future, we’ll be adding more functionality to all Showrooms, including sub-merchants that allow Showroom owners to sell another player’s items for a commission.
Player-Designed Racetracks
In December, we saw the second Great Racetrack Challenge come to Upland. Here, players submitted their racetrack designs for various cities, and we received nearly 200 submissions from the community! There will be four winners for this challenge, and each winning racetrack will become a real track for future races! Player-created content is one of the things that makes Upland special. Bringing the community’s creativity together with car racing is a match made in motorway heaven!
Metaventures
FIFA Fan Shops
There’s no denying that many players love all things FIFA World CupTM in Upland. Bundles have been flying off the shelf (in fact, we’re sold out now), making FIFA Fan Shops a much-welcomed addition to Metaventures. With these new shops, players have more ways to buy and sell FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM Mementos and Essentials from past tournaments. This is a great way for players to complete Collections or simply own items for their favorite teams playing in this year’s tournament (and prior tournaments dating back to 1930)!
First-Ever Outdoor Decor Showroom Shopping
Back in October, players opened the doors for the first shoppable Outdoor Decor Showrooms! This was a major step for the ecosystem and player-owned economy as it represented the purchasing and fulfillment end of Upland's commerce. Also, with all the passion surrounding FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM, we knew that players would want more ways to scratch the tournament itch. FIFA Outdoor Decor Showrooms allow players to trade Outdoor Decor assets in their very own Metaventures.
Legits
FIFA World CupTM Legits
The Upland-FIFA World CupTM partnership brought incredible new Legits into the metaverse as well as new mechanics to collect them. For example, we introduced FIFA World CupTM Bundles, Passes, and Pass Exchanges that spice up how players get FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM Mementos. Pass Exchanges brought a lot of excitement to Legits for FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM, and the “burn” mechanics from Passes open doorways for future Legit mechanics, such as Replicas.
FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM Spotlights
Perhaps the most exciting Legits development is the launch of Upland’s first video-based collectibles: Spotlights. These rare Mementos play video highlights from key moments of every FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM match! It’s one of the most dynamic and authentic ways for players to remember the 2022 tournament.
NFLPA Triple Threat Challenge
The Triple Threat Challenge gives giving the community more reasons to feed their NFLPA fandom! In November, we launched the Triple Threat Challenge to task players with building a winning three-player combination. This is an important addition to Legit gameplay, and we’re working on improving this activity and building opportunities to bring it back in the future.

UIP-1: Upland’s First Player-Voted Economic Update
In November, we wrapped up the first player vote that brought real change to the Upland economy. UIP-1 was the first Upland Improvement Proposal. It suggested an improved way to fund the Upland Pool in the future. To get the Upland community ready to vote on UIP-1, players joined the first Upland Town Hall for a lively discussion with the Upland Co-Founders. After 4,272 players voted on the proposal, nearly 73% of the community voted yes. So not only did UIP-1 represent the shift toward player-governed economics, it showed that the community is immensely active and interested in being a part of the ecosystem. And this is just the beginning! More voting capabilities and systems are in the works.
In-Game Chat
We just launched the first iteration of real-time, In-Game Chat! Players can now read several Global Channels as well as chat one-on-one with other players. As we mentioned above, this is just the beginning as in-game chat will receive deeper functionality soon!
Third-Party Development
World of Football
The third-party game, World of Football, is in Upland! This is possible through the Community Dev Tools launched back in September. World of Football is a new physics-based soccer game with over 56,000 downloads across Steam, Epic Games, and other platforms. The game has also seen nearly 600 Uplanders successfully connect to World of Football! It’s still early, and we’re sure more players will join soon – especially when players can visit several World of Football stadiums in Upland to launch matches.
?
This is one of the first third-party activities to launch in Upland. It is a great example of how Upland is poised to be an exciting platform and gateway for many game and app developers to bring their IP into Upland and the metaverse!
?
You can check out X1TheGamer’s interview with the developer below, and stay tuned for more announcements coming soon!
Miscellaneous Developments
Dynamic Competitive Treasure Hunting
October brought changes to Competitive Treasure Hunting to balance player rewards and give more players a chance to win. This change came from player feedback as well as our observations that some balancing might make these activities more enjoyable. With these changes, there were also tweaks to Riot Mode Thresholds and Treasure Rush.

2023, Here We Come!
It’s been an incredible journey. Upland has taken major steps forward in the past year, and with growing partnerships, an explosion of Metaventure activity, and third-party content via Community Dev Tools, 2023 is already shaping up to be a banner year.
?
This coming year will also see initial efforts that expand beyond Upland’s boundaries. One of these initiatives is the introduction of “living” species to the broader metaverse. As this initiative develops, it will bring new life into Upland. We will have more details as we get deeper into 2023.
?
Another initiative we should mention is the Open Metaverse Alliance (OMA3). Upland’s Co-Founder and Co-CEO Dirk Lueth is the Chairman of the Board at OMA3. This consortium aims to bring disparate virtual worlds and web3 developers together so users can cross apps and platforms with their identities and assets. The group came together in 2022, and it already has over 1,000 registrations and the first three workgroups on the way! Upland is a proud member of OMA3, and will continue to develop pathways that bring each virtual world in the broader metaverse closer together.
?
As we close out 2022, we want to send llama hugs to the community for being a part of this journey and making the

Community Dev Tools Bring a New Era to Upland
The next era of Upland has officially arrived. With the introduction of Community Dev Tools, developers can connect their third-party experiences to the Upland platform.
?
Extending the Upland ecosystem via third-party applications is a true game changer. New activities will pop up all over cities, giving users infinite reasons to explore Upland and utilize their assets.
?
The Community Dev Tools are here, today, for Upland Developer Network (UDN) members. What does this mean for users? Read on to learn more and jump on the hype train.
?
To celebrate this milestone moment, we are launching a Terraformer Block Explorer! Be on the lookout for more information soon!
?
What are Community Dev Tools?
In short, Community Dev Tools empower third-party developers to connect with Upland using simple REST APIs. This deployment method allows players to connect to third-party experiences while letting creators use the programming tools and game engines they love. Players have access to virtually limitless third-party content and developers can tap into the Upland ecosystem. It’s a win-win for everyone.
?
The Community Dev Tools are openly available to UDN members, and UDN applications are open for anyone that wants to apply. If you have a killer idea, we want you to bring it to life with us. Upland is rebuilding the world, after all.
?
With Community Dev Tools, it’s open game for creators to incorporate Upland’s cities, economy, and digital assets into their creations. Best of all, creators don’t need any blockchain or web3 experience. If they can build it, they can connect it to Upland with Community Dev Tools This includes 2D, 3D, and even virtual reality (VR) experiences. Developers don’t even need to build something new for Upland – we encourage them to launch existing games and other programs. Bring it on!
What’s the Experience Like in Upland?
There are infinite possibilities, and that’s not just marketing speak. One developer could launch a full-blown video game in Upland. Another could open a movie theater or a venue for virtual concerts. These are just a few examples of course.
?
Community Dev Tools allow developers to implement Upland digital assets into their creations. If a developer utilizes Upland items, users must grant permission for the application to access those items before the experience begins. This is optional, as developers can connect just about any experience they want. But they have the flexibility to incorporate Block Explorers, UPX, Spark, etc. For example, a race car game can use Metaverse Motors (MV Motors) vehicles.
?
Crowdfunding mechanisms are also in play. In these experiences, the developer will host a “pay-to-play” lobby where participants put their UPX into a pot and the rewards are split at the end of the experience.
Introducing Dev Shops
Upland created a new system of stores specifically for third-party developers called Dev Shops. Players will need to be in the vicinity of Dev Shops to interact with them and can Send their Block Explorers directly to these locations. Users can find Dev Shops in Upland neighborhoods by looking for the purple icon inside the app.
What’s Next for Dev Shops and Community Dev Tools?
Up to this point, Upland mechanics focused mainly on collecting properties, Legits, Block Explorers, UPX, etc. Now with Community Dev Tools, the scope of the Upland experience is truly up to the community and developers. This milestone establishes Upland as a powerful metaverse platform.
?
There’s much more to come! We will continue incremental updates in the weeks and months ahead as we collect feedback, polish the experience, and release new features. As Upland grows as a platform and more creators join the UDN, Community Dev Tools will grow to keep the creativity flowing!
?
What experiences get you excited? Join the UDN. Join the conversation on Reddit, and be on the lookout for Dev Shops and third-party experiences coming to an Upland city near you soon!

New Orleans Has Arrived!
https://www.upland.me/events/new-orleans-has-arrived
Coming soon after Kansas City and Rutherford, we will be also adding New Orleans, Louisiana, and Nashville, Tennessee! As we introduce Football Players into Upland, each team will need a hub for players to mint their essentials and mementos. To ensure economic stability and carefully monitor supply and demand, we are only adding 3 new cities for a total of 7 football cities. Each city will be serving one division until all 30 football cities are released (New York will host 2 divisions simultaneously). Make sure to tune in for full information over the next few weeks!
ntous occasion, we will be releasing both Kansas City, Missouri, and Rutherford, New Jersey, simultaneously!
Kansas City Release Details
This Friday, September 10th, at 8:00 AM PT, we will begin the release of Kansas City, Missouri.
Kansas City will serve as a mid-tier city, which means that roughly ~50% of properties will be priced under the “Fair Start Act” (FSA). As with Santa Clara, Kansas City will be released in standard mode, and collections will be revealed at release.
Kansas City Fun Facts
Kansas City has more barbeque restaurants per capita than any other US city!
Kansas City was home to Walt Disney’s first animation studio, Laugh-O-Gram Studios. It was here that he got the inspiration for Mickey Mouse, drawing from a real-life mouse in the building.
During prohibition in the 1920s, Kansas City largely ignored the amendment, which led to a surge of boozy jazz clubs, brothels and gambling joints.
Getting to Kansas City
Players can travel to Kansas City via the airports in New York and Chicago, or they can hop on the train from Chicago. Flying via plane is a shorter ride but will cost a premium, players who wish to save will be better off traveling via the train. These new routes will have boosted capacity for a few days prior to and during the release.
Rutherford Release Details
Also this Friday, September 10th, at 8:00 AM PT, we will begin the release of Rutherford, New Jersey.
As Upland continues to grow, there will inevitably be new types of cities that do not fit our current definition of starter, mid-tier, and high-tier cities. As such, Rutherford will be among the first small cities that find their way into the metaverse, due to the low volume of available properties.
Roughly ~30% of properties in Rutherford will be priced under the “Fair Start Act.” Like Kansas City, Rutherford will be a standard release, which means that collections will be revealed at launch.
Getting to Rutherford
Players can travel to Rutherford via the Metro station in Manhattan. Just head to the train terminal in Manhattan and select “Rutherford” as the destination.
Terminal Store Sale
As with all city releases, travel terminals for both Kansas City and Rutherford will be available in the Upland store on Thursday prior to launch. This means that registration will open up Wednesday morning and will close Thursday morning prior to the sale.
Terminal Sale Registration Details:
Registration Start: Wednesday, September 8th, at 8:00 AM PT
Registration Close: Thursday, September 9th, at 8:00 AM PT
Batch 1 Sale Start: Thursday, September 9th, at 9:00 AM PT
Batch 2 Sale Start: Thursday, September 9th, at 7:00 PM PT
KC/Rutherford Release Schedule
We will begin the release of Kansas City and Rutherford by opening up 2 neighborhoods as a stress test to ensure optimal performance. Pending a successful test, we will proceed with opening the remainder of all properties in Kansas City.
Thursday, September 9th
Train/Airport routes open to Kansas City & Rutherford following the terminal sale.
Friday, September 10th, starting at 8:00 AM PT
Stage 1: The “Gladstone” Neighborhood will be released in Kansas City. This is to ensure the stability of the platform before proceeding.
Stage 2: Rutherford will be released in its entirety.
Stage 3: The “Blue Hills” and “Meadowbrook Heights” Neighborhoods will be released in Kansas City.
Stage 4: Assuming stability and optimal performance, all remaining properties will be released in Kansas City.
We will give regular updates and reminders throughout this release in the #upland-updates channel in Discord.
Note: Planned releases are subject to change depending on the status of our systems. If there are any concerning issues, the release may be postponed or paused.
Cities to Look Forward to
Coming soon after Kansas City and Rutherford, we will be also adding New Orleans, Louisiana, and Nashville, Tennessee!

Introduction
Welcome to Genesis Week! The next few days are all about celebrating our beginnings. What better way to do that than unveiling the beginnings of land development and business operations in Upland? What follows below is a roadmap for making this a reality, as we build an incredible open market economy together. A merging of the real and digital worlds where participants can create and extract real value. A metaverse like no other.
Let’s dive in.
Developing Your Property
Building Characteristics
Visual Instance
All buildings (and other add-ons) in Upland will be implemented in 3D. The 3D structures in Upland will become visible on the map starting at a certain zoom level. Structures that serve special purposes (see below: e.g. businesses, etc.) will be represented by pins on the map when zoomed out.
Class
When developing a property, you will initially have several classes of buildings to choose from, depending on the region of the city.
Size
Each building class will have several possible sizes, determining the parcels it can potentially fit with as well as the functionality that it can serve. The size of the building will also determine its cost of construction and the time required to complete it.
Positioning With the Property Editor
A structure can only be built within the confines of a single property (future functionality may allow merging properties, however, this will not be available immediately). The position of the building within the property will be determined by the owner, provided that the 3D structure fits in the property with the required margins, through an editing interface that will be integrated into Upland. Once a tethered structure has been positioned and built, it can not be moved (though it can be demolished).
To hasten feature delivery, buildings may at first be tethered to the center of the property and allowed to be edited once by the owner when the Properties Editor is rolled out.
Required Resources
Building a structure on a property will require both UPX and time. While costs of construction will remain constant within parts of the same city, they may vary between different countries, counties, and cities.
Property Decor
Additions to your property may include supplemental items such as gardens, courts, trees, or sculptures.
Buildings and the Property NFT
Buildings in Upland are tethered to the property on which they are built. This means that buildings can not be traded on their own, and trading of properties will include any buildings that have been built on it. The buildings and their association with the properties will still be fully notarized on the blockchain, and the owner will have the option to demolish them (and burn from the blockchain) if they choose to do so.
Developing Neighborhoods
Each neighborhood in the city will have a development rating: a score given to a neighborhood that is based on a combination of the number of developed properties and their quality (elements that affect the quality of development include size, residents associated, supplemental items, number of businesses, and so on). Once a neighborhood has reached a certain development rating, it will automatically spawn a collection for that neighborhood (if one does not yet exist) and further advancement in the development rating will lead to an increase in the collection boost. For newly spawned neighborhood collections, elements such as level, one-time reward, and earnings boost will be automatically determined by a combination of market value and total availability of properties in the neighborhood.
Residential Designation
Once construction of a building is complete it can be used by default for residential purposes. Players can either use it for their own residence, or lease out to other Uplanders.
Primary Home Address
Each Uplander will be able to designate a single residential address as their primary home address at any given point. Designating a home address will carry numerous benefits such as supporting neighborhood development rating, participating in upcoming votable resolutions in the city, and more. While the primary home address will be unique per Uplander, more than one residential structure may be utilized by a single Uplander for future functional purposes.
Business Designation
A fully constructed residential building can be designated for business use when a business license is applied to it (a business license can be either owned or leased). The type of business license, together with the available facade modifications, will determine the final appearance of the building.
City Hall and Business Licences
City hall will be the first constructed building in Upland (owned by the community) and will be designated as a marketplace for the city’s business licenses.
Each type of Business License will be implemented as an SFT (Semi Fungible Token) with limited occurrences per locale (city or county), which Pro-Level Uplanders (i.e. Uplanders that have achieved a net worth of 100,000 UPX or higher) can own for their personal use or lease out to other Uplanders.
Business Types
While the potential for businesses in Upland is unlimited, especially when envisioning the introduction of third party development, Upland will start out with a limited number of business types that can be operated, with the initial focus on an even narrower set (comprising Block Explorer Shops, Cafés, Realty Agencies and Arcades).
Each new business type that will be launched will start with the minimal functionality that will justify its operations and will continue being developed as traction and usage by Uplanders grows.
In the case of all business types — the size of the building to which the business license has been applied will determine different restrictions of business operations.
Block Explorer Shop
Set up a Block Explorer gallery (each Block Explorer issued as an SFT on the blockchain) that players can purchase for UPX, or resell for an UPX fee. Explorers can be either purchased directly from Upland by the business owner or uploaded after having been approved by the Upland team.
Café
Cafés are going to offer means for players to connect inside Upland in small and manageable groups with a live chat room in the center of the experience. Owners of the cafe will be able to moderate and appoint other moderators, manage rules for allowing participation and offer virtual gift-items to be purchased and exchanged among patrons.
Realty Agency
Realty agencies will offer Uplanders advertising services such as advanced listings for property sales and residential properties for rent. Realty agencies will also offer advanced trading options such as creating property bundles for sale in a single transaction and selling complete collections.
Arcade
Arcades will offer players the opportunity to play casual games for a score, and compete in tournaments for UPX. At the first phase, the pinata practice game (including some further game mechanic improvements) will be available only in arcades, as a larger variety of arcade game types are introduced.
Nursery
Nursery owners will be able to grow and sell plants, trees, and gardens to other players in Upland. Plants and trees in Upland will have an evolution cycle that spans time. Once planted outside of a nursery, these items will not be able to be moved to a different location.
Upland Merchandise Store
Owners of Upland merchandise stores will be able to maintain an inventory and sell Upland merchandise to other players. Legit Upland merchandise will not be available for purchase anywhere else but inside of Upland, and the physical merchandise will be delivered in the real world. Some of the merchandise will be made available in limited runs and tokenized, offering the customer the option to stow the physical merchandise in Upland escrow while still being able to trade the token of ownership.
Bank
Bank owners in Upland will be able to give out interest-carrying mortgages to other players based on property escrow services provided by Upland. Other types of financial services will follow suit.
Pinata Treasure Store
Using Pinata Treasure Stores, Uplanders will be able to buy a pinata, load it with UPX and hide it in any Upland property, waiting for discovery (live-event style). This will enable Uplanders to run their self-sponsored treasure hunt event. (Restrictions may apply to conform with Upland ToS)
Car Dealership
While traveling via plane or train between cities is available in Upland, some Uplanders may choose to do so in style, via their own vehicles. Cars will be implemented as NFTs in Upland and available for purchase in car dealerships. Cars will also require operational fees for travel and have a finite amount of distance that they can travel.
Once real-world car brands are integrated into Upland, the Car Dealership will also be able to offer limited-run branded cars and perhaps even tokenized old-timers with their replicas in-game.
NFT Gallery
One of Upland’s special super-powers is the way it makes blockchain and NFT technology effortlessly accessible to mass markets. That means that NFT owners can potentially use Upland to gain access to a customer audience that’s beyond their reach elsewhere. While there are numerous reasons for why Upland is built on the EOS blockchain, a big part of the NFT market is found on other blockchains such as Ethereum. This is why Upland will offer an innovative service that would allow Uplanders to bring NFTs from other blockchains into Upland via an escrow service, and offer them for sale to other Uplanders. At any point in time, the owner of that NFT in Upland will be able to pull the NFT back to the blockchain of origin. (This service will be introduced after compliance with US regulation has been cleared).
Summary
We have already done significant work conceiving, designing, and executing on the building blocks of Property Development and Upland-Based Businesses and this roadmap marks our official launch of these efforts. Uplanders can expect to see some initial results implemented already in 2020.
Like all features in Upland, this roadmap will be delivered in small bursts. And similar to other features that tie to the core of the Upland economy — initial releases will be measured, carefully monitored, and tweaked as required.
While the initial focus of land development is largely scripted, with rich functionality in mind, later stages will include features that enable creativity and self-expression, and when combined with the prospect of opening to 3rd party developers, the sky’s the limit.

First call for boarding! Announcing: San Francisco Airport (SFO) ??

Can you believe how fast Upland is moving? We were in closed beta just a few months ago. Now we’ve got block explorers and community dApps, with treasure hunts and other features right around the corner.
Now we can add to that list that we are pre-launching San Francisco Airport (SFO) — TODAY! And we’re doing so through a fun contest! ??
Much news, such wow ??.
Preparing to expand
Those of you playing already know this, but for those just joining us: Upland is not intended to take place only in San Francisco. We’ll be expanding to new cities before you know it and we won’t stop until Miles the Llama can reach any part of the world.
When we do expand to other cities, following the existing game dynamic, you’ll need to send your block explorer there to discover what that city has to offer. Sending via properties will still do the job… very slowly. If you want to really beat the competition and speed things up, your block explorer will have to take one of several means of transportation. Airports/flights will be the first of such means to be available.
How it will work
Airports are divided into terminals, and within those terminals, parcels. We’re planning a whole game dynamic down the road involving flights and transportation for block explorers, but that comes later. What’s important for you to know now is that before a player can use those, they’ll need to actually get to the airport. This will be made possible by sending your explorer to a terminal parcel just like you would any other property.
Here’s the catch: there are a limited number of parcels per airport terminal, and for each, the number of times that an explorer can be sent to it per day varies (depending on the parcel’s size). This means that in the future if someone wants to send their explorer on a flight leaving one of the terminals, the explorer will need to first be sent to one of those terminal parcels. And those terminals’ parcels will be owned by a lucky few.
Bird’s-eye view of Upland’s San Francisco Airport (SFO), in-game. Terminal 3 is the northern group.
Will you be among them? ??
Contest: FlySFO drawing!
SFO is just outside the bounds of San Francisco… a place your explorer cannot yet reach (you didn’t think it would be that easy, did you?). To get there, we’re launching this special drawing — and it starts NOW! Here’s how you can get your hands on SFO terminal parcels.
Every day over the next week, a few unminted properties will be tagged with a special plane icon and the text “FlySFO”, representing this contest.
Eligible properties for contest are tagged ‘FlySFO’ and have this icon ??
All you have to do is find one of those properties, then enter its address along with your Upland username on this form:
https://discover.upland.me/flysfo
A total of 35 properties in San Francisco will be tagged ?? for this contest leading up to February 20th, with final entries being accepted until 12:00 PM EST. We’ll be waiting for your final entries at NFT.nyc — the leading annual conference for NFTs and digital/crypto collectibles — where we’ll hold a live stream with Joel and Travis of Bad Crypto Podcast and together select one lucky winner who will receive the first SFO Terminal Parcel. Not only is this an exceedingly unique and valuable asset in Upland that you will receive for FREE ?? ?? ??— everyone who wants an SFO terminal parcel after you will have to first send their explorers to yours (cha-ching! ??).
The prize parcel will be one of 4 located at Terminal 3:
9/9 Domestic Terminal 3 (1–10 properties discovered)
8/9 Domestic Terminal 3 (11–25 properties discovered)
7/9 Domestic Terminal 3 (26–34 properties discovered)
6/9 Domestic Terminal 3 (35 properties discovered)
There are 35 total addresses tagged FlySFO. The more addresses that are submitted, the bigger the parcel that will be given away. If we find all 35 addresses among the total entries, we’ll give away the biggest parcel — 185 UP2 in size!

BestDapp Review: *Upland* Beta (EOS-based Blockchain Game)
By cryptokib | Blockchain Dominion | 11/30/19 $0.01 tipped
Upland is a blockchain-based property game that has been compared to digital monopoly. I have selected it as my entry for the publish0x Best Dapp Contest and before going into the finer details of the game itself, here are the reasons that it made my pick:
Promotes blockchain: a quick glance at the whitepaper will show you that the company behind the game, Uplandme Inc., is all about promoting blockchain for public adoption. One of the ways they do this is by keeping the use of blockchain behind the scenes, as it should be. The fact that the game runs on a blockchain shouldn't matter at the moment to the common user in the same way that it shouldn't matter what type of servers Amazon uses when they place an order there. Blockchain just happened to be the best technology and methodology for a game like this, and while the benefits are explained in detail for those who are interested, it's not in the spotlight - a smart decision. Get people to use blockchain, bring it to their attention later.
Therefore, as you'll soon see in the current beta, there is no mention of opening a wallet or managing one. It is all done automatically behind the scenes - and purchase of the in-game token, UPX, is made through FIAT with your credit card, directly in the game interface.
Promotes EOSIO: EOSIO is a blockchain that for some reason not many people support or utilize. This is despite the ability to stake EOS, the blockchain's native coin, in exchange for resources on the chain and therefore avoiding the need for paying transaction fees. It's also a very durable and scalable chain, which means you can use it to grow fast. That's how the game keeps the transactions free and relatively speaking - quick. Two fewer things to explain to a lay player, which further enables adoption.
Promotes digital assets as valuables: more people playing the game and collecting means more mass-adoption of digital assets as legitimate collectibles with legitimate value, meaning that they aren't less worthy of enjoying just because you can't physically touch them. Similar to a website, game skins and other digital IP.
Promotes curiosity and potentially personal financial management: the point of the game, explained below, is to buy properties. Certain properties complete collections, for example in a particular neighborhood, so you find yourself researching the neighborhood and its borders outside of the game. Future features of the game, not currently available, will include a "block explorer" (an avatar that walks around the map) and market fluctations and forces derived from the real world. All of these and more encourage an individual to learn about his or her surroundings and I think that has massive potential for greatness. At the same time, depending on how you choose to play the game, it can teach you something about financial management and negotiations, in your personal life and in business. It's true that most will choose to view the game as an asset portfolio and will therefore buy-buy-buy, but I will go into a different way to play below.
Intro
First things first, it's important to mention that the game is currently in beta and is therefore in its simplest form. The only features available are: the ability to buy the in-game coin (UPX) with your credit card, the ability to buy/sell/trade properties and the ability to complete collections with those properties. That's it. Most of the players are early adopters or digital asset investors looking to hodl in hopes of big returns in the future. That hasn't stopped the game from developing a very active Telegram channel and community.
San Francisco is currently the only available city and that's where the game is presently focused. The properties are based on real world bounderies. In the game, real-world 3 meter X 3 meter blocks are represented as one game pixel, called a UP Square (UP^2). When you click on properties to view them, it will tell you how many UP^2 the property covers as well as the base monthly UPX it will produce. The relative amount of UPX on your properties can be collected every 3 hours (derivative of the monthly amount). There are a variety of "Collections" in the game, which are kind of like albums/portfolios to which you add specific properties you own, and which give you certain rewards. For example, a collection called "Sunset" requires owning three properties in the Sunset Neighborhood of San Francisco.
351665157-f7031fe0054eda772bf633fa19a0b515335b073e7429b8ee1ff3a970be320ae7.png
Above: Collections Menu
These borders exist in the game and adhere to real-world borders, but they are not displayed for you. If you want to know where Sunset begins and ends you have to research that for yourself, which goes back to part of the reasons I chose this game above. Completing the collection will earn you a one-time reward of 900 UPX and will boost the monthly earning rate of the properties you added to that collection by 1.3X. All transactions and properties, which are themselves non-fungible tokens (NFTs), are performed on the EOS blockchain, and clicking on a property you own will allow you to view its property deed, a neat little graphic that also offers you a link to view your asset on bloks.io.
351665157-62efc14234baa987fd9e0ae9baa914780fb6e6d1bf76d35a1344fce92cd79fd0.png
The UPX token is the in-game coin and here is where this dapp differs, for example, from CryptoKitties (CK) and many others. With CK, all of your purchases and transaction fees are paid in ETH, which is essentially digital cash. The reason ETH is considered digital cash is because it is liquid - you can use it to buy other things, including other currencies (such as FIAT on an exchange if you want to "cash out" into the real world). However UPX, at least for now, is strictly a utility token, meaning its only use is in the game itself. You can view the difference between CryptoKitties and Upland as the difference between going to two different old-school arcades: the first one allows you to use your actual quarters for the machines/games while the second's machines/games only operate on that specific arcade's tokens.
Gameplay
I made a small initial investment in the game because I personally enjoy collecting digital assets and collectibles of all sorts, plus I want to see where this game goes. You can therefore categorize me as the "Play-to-Own" type of player. My initial investment was $100 USD, which at the rate of $1USD / 1000UPX (at present time unchangeable), garnered me with 100,000 UPX. Instead of dumping money endlessly, or buying and forgetting, I decided to see how far I can stretch my investment and how it might be possible to turn money into more money (which goes back to what I initially said about financial management).
351665157-62bd93bb43cf2726910f552b8940da4a4a3c450d3c3b66f803ecc5d5a109e229.png
Therefore my first step was to view and study all of the collections. After that, I browsed the map a bit. For me personally it helped that I have been to San Francisco in the past, but that of course only helps you with areas you are familiar with. These are the first four collections of the game:
Newbie: own any 1 property in Upland
San Franciscan: own 3 properties in San Francisco
Sunset: own 3 properties in the Sunset Neighborhood of San Francisco
King of the Street: own 3 properites on the same street
You can't have a property in more than one collection at a time, but you CAN switch them between collections to collect the one-time rewards. So essentially, when you start the game, if you can find 3 properties on the same street in the same neighborhood, you can collect on all four initial collections right at the start. When I started, I couldn't find 3 properties that answered all those criteria in one neighborhood (not in my price range at least), but I did find 3 on the same street. And I could tell it could be attractive for the future dynamics of the game, because they were all adjacent to one another. Cost? Just under 100,000 UPX.
I bought the 3 and using the difference plus the rewards from the three collections I completed added a 4th tiny property. Immediately put them up for sale on the internal market. Listing for sale doesn't cost anything and I laughed that maybe with all the FOMO someone will buy these 3 properties under the same auspices that I did. I listed them each at a humble markup, because I didn't really believe that someone would buy them for outrageous prices yet, especially with other properties still available for first-time purchase in the beta... but lo and behold, after a few days, someone bought all three.
Using the profits, I decided to aim for the Mission District collection. I bought one very nicely sized property there with a huge monthly return compared to other properties in the game for the price I paid. Then I bought another medium sized property. After connecting with a few players in the community, I negotiated trading my final property for another player's property in the game, and insodoing completed the Mission District collection, got the reward and also a nice 1.4X boost for those three properties. After about a week, I had enough UPX to purchase a 4th unrelated property which I returned to the Newbie collection and is alone receiving a 1.1X boost.
Final results after 35 days of "play":
Initial Investment: $100 USD = 100,000 UPX
# of Properties: 4
Total Portfolio Value: 113,313 UPX
Monthly Earnings (w/o rewards): 2,229 UPX/month
Total ROI after 35 days: 13.3%
Pretty good considering the ANNUAL rate of return on a property is 17.3%. That means my gameplay made my portfolio a little less in a month than it would have otherwise made in an entire year!
Future of the Game
The whitepaper is chock-full-of details RE features that are yet to come. I feel that it is pointless to speculate over them until they are here, but I look forward to their arrival. In the meantime, one thing that is important to consider is why people do anything: Why do they play games? Why do they invest in properites, digital or real? The answer is that it brings them some sort of value.
For games, sometimes the enjoyment itself is the value. I enjoyed the gameplay strategy I utilized above, but I doubt many people in the crypto world are like me. Instead, they will look at it as a means of real value, meaning that eventually they must be able to liquidate their assets (convert it to digital or FIAT cash). It will be interesting to see how the gamemakers will answer this need. Will Upland properties be available on third party markets like OpenSea? Will it be possibly to sell UPX back to the game pool for FIAT? Anything can happen.
For the time being, after just over 12 months of development, I think the game is looking sharp, doing well, and has potential for massive adoption by both crypto investors and lay players alike. That's why it's my BestDApp selection.

At Upland, we see a future where blockchain technology creates real-world economies for games and opens up a completely new way for ownership of assets to be treated and assigned. It will provide a new kind of value proposition which better aligns players and game operator incentives.
So what is today’s problem with traditional games?
Traditional games usually provide simulated economies controlled by game operators. In the vast majority of cases, these simulated economies do not offer a marketplace to trade or liquidate their assets.
The business models of traditional games which are “Free-to-Play” or “Pay-to-Play” fall short by not offering true ownership of digital assets to players. Creating a real-world economy in games that would include true ownership is seen as disadvantageous by game operators because they are competing against their customers/players when the latter are allowed to resell their assets.
“If you can’t sell, you don’t own it”
When players buy an asset in the traditional Free-to-Play model, they are only getting entertainment value out of it and consider their investment as a sunk cost. This is because traditional games are based on centralized database entries. These can be changed at any time by a game operator with the consequence that assets can be taken away from a player. In the worst-case scenario, if a gaming provider went out of business, players would lose all of their assets before getting the complete entertainment value out of it.
To sum it up: Players of traditional games are not in control — the game operators are. This leads to frustration by players who spend a lot of time in a game and think of their creations, enhancements, and assets as their own. Additionally, traditional games don’t allow people to prove and verify the provenance of specific virtual items, which can lead to fraud, reducing further incentives for players to spend and create in a game.
So the question is, whether there is a better approach to cope with the problem stated above. We think yes. Upland’s solution comes with the use of blockchain technology that allows the introduction of a new business model category called:
Play to Own
We believe there’s a new revolution coming that will have a strong impact on society, as blockchain technology brings to fruition the transfer of value in a decentralized, peer-to-peer manner. Said differently, after the agricultural revolution, the industrial revolution, the information revolution, the approaching “Ownership Revolution” — powered by blockchain technology — is the core foundational block for our property trading game.
However, blockchain today is still seen as a complicated technology, both difficult to understand and to use for non-techies, which is why Upland created its mission:
“To bring the benefits of blockchain technology to mass markets through gamified experiences.”
Just like in the business model “Free-to-Play”, players in Upland can start playing for free on an “Upland Visa” (see also the article Understanding Digital Assets and User Identity in Upland). Once graduated to “Uplander” i.e. citizen status, a player can be sure that any digital item they acquire will carry a tangible value that can be liquidated in a secondary market. We believe that this fact will create trust which is fundamental for an economic system to thrive.
In general, ownership and its enforcement is a crucial element of a functioning economy. It gives people a sense of security and status and they can feel a sense of ownership pride. When people take ownership of something, they are inspired to care for it in numerous ways, including creative embellishments, as well as ongoing maintenance.
Just as in the real world, a house owner will always invest more time, money, and effort to keep his house in good condition, while a tenant normally doesn’t do so to the same extent.
Upland’s core assumption is that the perceived value of truly owned digital assets is substantially higher compared to the one in traditional business models. Play-to-Own has the potential to be applied in any game, increasing customer lifetime value, engagement, and retention. It opens up new revenue opportunities that have not been possible before.
Our hypothesis is that Play-to-Own creates a superior value proposition for both the players and the game operators. Players will choose to play these types of games over traditional ones because they get ownership security and benefit from long-term value creation. Operators will observe happier and more loyal customers, therefore the Play-to-Own business model will be the future of gaming and beyond.

What is Upland?
Built at the intersection of the real and virtual world, Upland is a Monopoly style property trading game that gives you the power to buy, sell and trade virtual properties based on real-world addresses, just like the one you live at today… but in the virtual world. The digital properties you collect in Upland don’t have any association or rights to the correlating properties in the real world, however, the addresses do mirror real-life locations. Upland’s economy is powered by an in-game currency called UPX (pronounced “UP-EX”). All property you purchase in Upland is secured on the EOS Blockchain and is yours forever.
FinLab EOS VC Fund and several angel investors have invested a combined $2 million in Uplandme, maker of a digital property-trading game running on top of the EOS blockchain.
The funds will be used to support the development and launch of Upland, which is currently available in beta, and will become widely available later this year.
Billed as “‘Monopoly’ meets blockchain,” as in the classic Parker Brothers board game, the game enables players to buy, sell, and trade imaginary properties based on real-world addresses. The twist is that instead of paper cards, it uses non-fungible tokens (NFTs), or digital collectibles similar to CryptoKitties, to confer ownership of an asset.
Unlike most digital games, however, properties that are recorded on the blockchain throughout the gameplay will be truly owned by the players, not the gaming company, Uplandme says. And just like in real life, land in this virtual realm has a fixed supply. “We expect that the game momentum will be driven by the simple fact that there is a natural scarcity of available properties because they are based on real-world addresses,” said Uplandme co-founder Dirk Lueth. Lueth and his partners, Mani Honigstein and Idan Zuckerman, aim to disrupt the $50 billion market for casual (mass market) games.
“One game night, while playing Monopoly and watching the Netflix series ‘Stranger Things’ we got thinking about a property game in a parallel universe and realized how properties that are based on real-world addresses can be the perfect collectible NFT,” Lueth told CoinDesk.
Angel investors in the seed round include Kai Bolik, co-founder and CEO of Gameduell, a gaming community with more than 70 games and 130 million players worldwide; Jan Sprengnetter, CEO of Sprengnetter Group, a property valuation provider; and Markus Ogurek, a former vice president of Hewlett Packard Enterprise.
The lead investor, FinLab EOS VC Fund, is backed by Block.one, the company that built the EOS blockchain, and FinLab AG, which focuses on investing in German financial technology companies.
“We invested into Uplandme, Inc. because we like the genuine idea of a virtual property market powered by the EOS Blockchain and the very experienced and passionate team behind it,” said Stefan Schuetze, managing director of FinLab EOS VC Fund.
To be sure, Upland is one among many blockchain-based games in various stages of development.
Upland players will be able to trade their properties on a marketplace for an in-game currency called UPX. Beta testers are currently able to trade properties in a virtual San Francisco.
So you’ve decided to enter the exciting world of Upland! We applaud you, and welcome you to a new platform that will change the face of digital ownership. Upland is built on blockchain technology so everything you collect in the game is yours to keep in real life. But how do you get started?
Well nobody’s got time for long set-up processes, especially in Upland where time roaming the virtual streets = time well spent!??That’s why we’ve made our sign-up process super simple and lightning quick.
To start collecting digital properties, all you need is an email address. That’s it! There’s no need to set up a crypto wallet, as Upland’s innovative on-boarding system automatically creates an EOS account for you once you’ve acquired enough assets in the game and become a full-fledged Uplander.(Note: In the closed beta phase, all testers who purchase a property automatically become Uplanders.)
The private keys generated for an Upland EOS account are created on the player’s device by the Upland game client where they will be ciphered, secure, and not visible to anybody. Crypto aficionados will also have the option to generate and use their own private keys for the account if they wish to in the future.
We believe our unique sign-up method and easy payment options will truly bridge the gap between crypto holders and mainstream gamers, by offering a simple gateway into the blockchain space for people with limited crypto experience. You can read more about our technical account creation process
