New Zealand
Ultrasis and its partners, Medtech Global and Opening Doors, have just entered the third and final year of the contract with the Ministry of Health to provide BtB to all GP practices in New Zealand. The Ministry of Health has commenced a review of the initial outcomes of the service to help inform them prior to completion of the contract renewal process in late 2013.
The service delivered on Medtech's GP desktop portal "Manage my Health" has been well received since launch and proved an excellent and seamless way of patients completing their initial sign-on to BtB at the GPs surgery. The patient then has access and is ready to logon and start the program on return home.
In his address to the Australian National Suicide Prevention Conference in Sydney, Australia on 12 October 2012, the Hon Peter Dunne, Associate Minister of Health, spoke of the current suicide prevention initiatives and of the increased funding that has allowed greater access to talking therapies and co-ordinated packages of care for patients. Since February 2011, people with mild and moderate mental health problems have also been using e-therapy tools, such as the computerised cognitive behavioural therapy tool, BtB. In helping people in the primary care system we can ensure New Zealand nationals have the support they need early on.
Australia
In April 2012 the Department of Health and Ageing ("DoHA") announced its eMental Health strategy. This is intended to improve the availability of interventions for mental health for Australians, delivered via an online portal which would direct patients to the most appropriate intervention for their symptoms. DoHA put out a call for parties interested in being a provider, to submit their tenders by 15 May 2012. Ultrasis submitted a tender jointly with Medtech Global, following the successful program in New Zealand. Medtech already provides many GP practices in Australia with health records software to their desktops.
The results from the assessment of those applications were due to be announced and successful submissions confirmed by June 2012. This has now been delayed whilst DoHA analyse the levels of existing program expenditure and the extent to which this is either committed or uncommitted from the current budget. This means there will be a pause in this grant program and we await further updates.

Ultrasis (ULT) August 2103 NHS/USA..
Another company that has disappointed for several years is Ultrasis. Shares in this interactive healthcare company have been in a downtrend since 2006. The main problem for Ultrasis has been that sales of their flagship ‘Beating the Blues’ product to the NHS have fallen away.
However, things are changing at Ultrasis and this is reflected in a clear chart breakout in the last few weeks. The Company has recently reported good progress with ‘Beating the Blues’ in the USA. Also, the replacement of CEO Nigel Brabbins with Marketing Director, John Smith has been well received by the market. John is in position as an Interim CEO while the board “look for a suitable replacement for Mr Brabbins.
The flow of good news continued on 1 August when Ultrasis announced that it had entered a new business partnership with Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. The RNS reported that "The two organisations will establish a jointly-owned company, in which they will hold equal shares, to deliver a range of computerised healthcare products and clinical interventions - including Ultrasis' leading "Beating the Blues" therapy programme for stress and depression."
John Smith, Chief Executive of Ultrasis, added: "This is a significant development for our business and marks the start of our strategic refocus to become "a provider of comprehensive healthcare solutions rather than just a developer of software. CWP has an exceptional reputation for quality service provision and excellent clinical governance arrangements, both of which are required to meet the needs of the new commissioning arrangements of the NHS."
AimZine Comment: Cracking the NHS and the USA are big challenges for Ultrasis but the Interim CEO has got off to a very good start in his first few weeks in post.

China trial results autumn 2013.
Scroll down right side pdf file to China comment March 2013.!
In July we announced that Ultrasis had entered into a research partnership with the Mental Health Services Department of West China Hospital, West China School of Medicine Sichuan University, Chengdu, Sichuan Province.
The initial research phase should be completed by """Autumn 2013"""....
The partnership is aimed at establishing the benefits of using BtB to alleviate mild and moderate depression and anxiety within the Chinese population and identifying any cultural adaptation required to develop a Chinese-specific version of the program for the Chinese market. West China Hospital is the largest hospital in China, has in excess of 4,000 beds and delivers over 2.5 million out-patient appointments per year.
China has a population of nearly 1.35 billion people and accounts for almost 20 per cent. of the world’s population. The Chinese Government is positively addressing, at national and provincial levels, the need to provide psychological therapy services to its population, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy being already a well-established form of treatment in the country’s mental health services. The World Health Organisation estimates that mental illness will increase in prominence, to account for 17.4 per cent. of all illness in China, by 2020.
The research programme is a significant development for Ultrasis and BtB. More important is the potential it offers to build a credible base from which to address the largest market (by population) in the world. The potential for computerised CBT to help.

July 30 2013 Computer Cognitive Behavior Therapy..!!
— Does psychotherapy via the Internet work? For the first time, clinical researchers from the University of Zurich have studied whether online psychotherapy and conventional face-to-face therapy are equally effective in experiments. Based on earlier studies, the Zurich team assumed that the two forms of therapy were on a par. Not only was their theory confirmed, the results for online therapy even exceeded their expectations.

Further US Success for Beating the Blues
Ultrasis, the leading provider of cognitive behavioral therapy for stress and mild to moderate depression, is pleased to announce that its US joint venture, U² Interactive has secured a new contract with Park Center Inc, an Indiana based Community Mental Health Service Provider.
Paul Wilson, CEO of Park Center, said "We are delighted to be partnering with U2 Interactive to make Beating the Blues available within our services. With Beating the Blues we have found an affordable, evidence based and innovative solution that will empower clients to take a more active role in managing their overall health by treating their depression and anxiety. In addition to using this tool with traditional clients coming to our site for services, we will use Beating the Blues as key resource for Care Coaches imbedded in primary care offices and it will also be the cornerstone of a public billboard campaign to promote awareness of depression and anxiety. With advances in technology, integration efforts with primary care and cuts to mental health funding, it is important to look for quality treatment options that are also cost effective. Beating the Blues is all that. Park Center values the scientific research behind Beating the Blues and anticipates our clients will achieve positive outcomes with this exciting patient centered approach to care."
John Smith, Chief Operating Officer at U2 Interactive and Chief Executive at Ultrasis, said "We are very excited at the opportunity to work with the team at Park Center. They bring the kind of professionalism, vision and approach that will ensure the successful implementation of Beating the Blues. With increasing pressure on budgets and the need to demonstrate measurable outcomes we believe that Beating the Blues will add significant value to their high quality services. Now that Beating the Blues has been recognised in the US by National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP).we expect to see increased interest and further contracts."
Ends
Beating the Blues’ stands out as the most evidence-based ccbt programme available. The challenge Ultrasis has faced for the past two years has been how to engage with the changing NHS and provide a solution to their needs under the new commissioning arrangements and also how to ensure consistently high levels of completion of the programme by patients. The joint venture announced with CWP will help us to address these challenges by creating a range of products and services aligned to the needs of today's NHS that focus on the needs of both GP's and patients.

One of the things I did was a computer-based Beating The Blues therapy programme that raises your awareness of depression and how it can affect you. Having access to that earlier on would be a good way to prepare yourself. People don’t know what to look out for. Update 18 June 2013..
Computer-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Beating the Blues (BtB), is a computer-delivered series of cognitive behavioral therapy sessions for adults with mild to moderate depression and/or anxiety, as determined by an outpatient screening using a standardized instrument. BtB is based on the concept that changing one's thoughts changes one's feelings and behaviors as well. Delivered online in eight personalized 50-minute sessions accessed about weekly, the intervention teaches cognitive and behavioral strategies. During early sessions, clients learn about depression and anxiety and how to identify their own symptoms, and they set goals for therapy. In the following sessions, clients learn how to identify and change their thoughts, inner beliefs, and attributional styles (ways for explaining the causes of an event or behavior) that are exacerbating their problems. Throughout the sessions, a number of interactive multimedia techniques are used, most notably video vignettes that depict individuals modeling the session content. In addition, clients select behavioral techniques (e.g., activity scheduling, problem solving, sleep management) to apply to their problems. The online system administers demographic and evaluation questionnaires; provides the client with printable notes and worksheets throughout sessions; generates homework assignments for practicing new skills and assesses how assignments have been carried out; and sends clients a session review

That’s what mental health experts have been saying for years and now it seems federal and state officials are tuning in. President Obama included $235 million in his budget to pay for such things as training teachers to detect mental illness in students.

Public Health Wales (PHW) has been involved in the development of a national
programme of public health campaigns, which has ensured a consistent national
approach with regards to the structure and pharmacist intervention required. It also
means that effective evaluation of the campaign delivery and interventions made is
being undertaken.
BCUHB has had a good uptake with the public health campaigns namely 85% return
rate with the Education Expert Programme and 88% return rate with the One in Ten
- reducing the risk of stroke and diabetes. The latest campaign is Love your Lungs,
targeting lung health
Following a successful application to the Welsh Assembly Government's rural health
innovation fund, three community pharmacies in Bala, Nefyn and Barmouth teamed
up with the BCUHB and Public Health Wales to pilot the delivery of Computerised
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy through community pharmacy. Despite being in the
NICE guidelines for the treatment of mild to moderate depression and anxiety, CBT
was not an option routinely offered by GPs due to the rural location of the three
communities involved and the need to travel long distances. An eight week course of
CCBT was offered using the ""Beating the Blues"" software. To date, 30 patients have
taken part in the pilot with completion rates higher than average for the ‘Beating the
Blues’ software. Those involved showed improvement in depression and anxiety
scores measured using PHQ-9 and GAD-7 questionnaires. The pilot proved
successful in establishing that there was a clear need for this service and that it could
be delivered through community pharmacy due to its accessibility and the fact that
the pharmacies involved were viewed by patients as part of the local healthcare team.
