NASA Brings Scientists & Theologians Together To Prepare World For Extraterrestrial Contact
September 25, 2014 by Arjun Walia.
A couple of months ago top US astronomers gathered in front of Congress to let them know that extraterrestrial life exists – without question. They cited the sheer size of the universe as their most important proof, emphasizing that there are trillions of stars out there, with one in every five most likely harbouring an Earth-like planet (though it is important to keep in mind that planets do not have to be “Earth-like” in order to harbour life). You can read more about that story here.
“The number of habitable worlds in our galaxy is certainly in the tens of billions, minimum, and we haven’t even talked about the moons. And the number of galaxies we can see, other than our own, is about 100 billion.” – Seth Shostak, Senior Astronomer at California’s SETI Institute (source)
This time, NASA and the Library of Congress have teamed up to bring together scientists, theologians, philosophers and historians from around the globe for a two day symposium in order to discuss how to prepare the world for extraterrestrial contact, whether it be microbial organisms or intelligent beings.
“We’re looking at all scenarios about finding life. If you find microbes, that’s one thing. If you find intelligence, it’s another. And if they communicate, it’s something else, and depending on what they say, it’s something else! The idea is not to wait until we make a discovery, but to try and prepare the public for what the implications might be when such a discovery is made. I think the reason that NASA is backing this is because of all the recent activity in the discovery of exoplanets and the advances in astrobiology in general. People just consider it much more likely now that we’re going to find something — probably microbes first and maybe intelligence later. The driving force behind this is from a scientific point of view that it seems much more likely now that we are going to find life at some point in the future.” – Astronomer, symposium organizer and former chief NASA historian, Steven J. Dick. (source)
One of the theologians present was Brother Guy Consolmagno, who is the new president of the Vatican Observatory Foundation. This is what he had to say:
“I believe [alien life exists], but I have no evidence. I would be really excited and it would make my understanding of my religion deeper and richer in ways that I can’t even predict yet, which is why it would be so exciting.” (source)
He is urging the public not to be surprised when extraterrestrial life is discovered, because it is inevitably going to happen. He even said that he would be happy to baptize them, if it’s intelligent extraterrestrial life that’s discovered. The Vatican has been very open to the idea of intelligent extraterrestrial life, and they’ve expressed these views for a very long time.
Earth is not the center of the universe, it’s not flat, and it’s looking very likely that the next major, paradigm-shifting revelation will be the fact that we are not alone in the universe.
It’s great to see the mainstream world gather, discuss, and prepare for this possibility and ultimate reality, and it’s a great segue to create more awareness about the world of secrecy, the world’s within our world that deal with projects the human race knows nothing about.
The Other Probability – Intelligent Extraterrestrial Life Is Already Here
The information below, which is from another article I wrote this year, is probably old news for CE fans that regularly visit our site, but I thought it would be fitting to share it again for our new readers. You can find more CE articles on the UFO/Extraterrestrial topic by visiting our exopolitics section HERE.
In the United States, at least half of all Americans say that we’re not alone in the universe. Fifty percent of Americans already believe that there is some form of life on other planets, while only seventeen percent think that there is not. A quarter of Americans believe that intelligent extraterrestrial visitors have already come to Earth and have been doing so for a long time. (source)
Here’s one of them:
“Yes there have been crashed craft, and bodies recovered. We are not alone in the universe, they have been coming here for a long time.” (source) (source) – Apollo 14 Astronaut, Air Force Captain, and Founder of the Institute of Noetic Sciences, Dr. Edgar Mitchell
There are multiple reasons why the extraterrestrial question continues to gain popularity. People are starting to ask questions about the world around them, utilizing critical thinking and investigation. After thoroughly researching this topic you will be hard-pressed to deny that we are not alone, and we are being visited.
1. The Size of the Universe
How often do you look up into the night sky and wonder just how many stars, planets, galaxies, and more are out there? Space has always been deeply fascinating to scientists, philosophers, artists – just about everyone, in fact. What is it about deep space that so forcefully grabs our attention? To think about just how big the universe is can really put things into perspective.
Counting the stars in the universe is like trying to count the number of sand grains on a beach. It’s an effort in futility. Although estimates vary among different experts, the general consensus is that there are at least between 100 billion and 200 billion galaxies in our universe. Think about that for a moment, and now throw in billions of stars in each galaxy! (source) This number could very easily be in the trillions for all we know.
Take the Milky Way Galaxy for example, which measures to about 120,000 light years across (it would take light that many years to travel across the galaxy), and contains up to 400 billion stars. (source)
Scientists estimate that at least 10 billion habitable Earth-sized planets exist in the Milky Way alone (which is, again, just 1 galaxy out of billions), but it’s important to keep an open mind about the necessary conditions for life. Some extraterrestrial lifeforms could require an entirely different environment in order to thrive. Accordingly, all habitable planets do not necessarily need to be Earth-like.
Given our estimation of the size of the universe, or multiverse (whatever you want to call it), odds are we are not alone.
2. Whistle Blowers
The past few years have seen a surge of whistleblowers coming out and saying some pretty remarkable things. Bradley Manning, Edward Snowden, and Julian Assange have received the most attention, but the reality is that there are hundreds of whistleblowers who have come forward with verified credentials and backgrounds. Mass surveillance and the security state are not the only things shocking people around the world, it’s the fact that many of these whistleblowers claim that we are not alone in the universe. They might be easy to ignore, too, if it weren’t for the impressive backgrounds these people have in their respected fields.
The first one that comes to mind is Paul Hellyer, Former Canadian Defence Minister, the man responsible for unifying the Canadian Air Force, Army, and the Navy into one united group now known as the Canadian Forces. For someone with such a background to come out and make these extraordinary claims was pretty shocking indeed, and definitely grabbed the attention of many people.
hell
“Decades ago, visitors from other planets warned us about the direction we were heading and offered to help. Instead, some of us interpreted their visits as a threat, and decided to shoot first and ask questions after. Trillions of dollars have been spent on black projects which both congress and the commander in chief have deliberately been kept in the dark.” (source)
Read more about “black projects” HERE.
“In one of the cases during the cold war, 1961, there were about 50 UFOs in formation flying South from Russia across Europe. The supreme allied commander was very concerned and was about ready to press the panic button when they turned around and went back over the North Pole. They decided to do an investigation and they investigated for three years and they decided that with absolute certainty that four different species, at least, have been visiting this planet for thousands of years. There’s been a lot more activity in the past two decades, especially since we invented the atomic bomb.” (source)
Paul Hellyer isn’t the only one making extraordinary statements, at least a dozen NASA astronauts have done the same. Just like Dr. Edgar Mitchell’s quote, other astronauts have said some remarkable things. Let’s take a look at a few examples.
“There is abundant evidence that we are being contacted, that civilizations have been monitoring us for a very long time. That their appearance is bizarre from any type of traditional materialistic western point of view. That these visitors use the technologies of consciousness, they use toroids, they use co-rotating magnetic disks for their propulsion systems, that seems to be a common denominator of the UFO phenomenon.” (source) – Dr. Brian O’Leary, Former NASA astronaut and Princeton physics professor
“In my opinion I think they were worried that it would panic the public so they started telling lies about it. And then I think they had to tell another lie to cover their first lie, now they don’t know how to get out of it. Now it’s going to be so embarrassing to admit that all these administrations have told so many untruths, it would be embarrassing getting out of it. There are a number of extraterrestrial vehicles out there cruising around.” (source) – Gordon Cooper, Former NASA astronaut, aeronautical engineer and test pilot. One of the seven original astronauts in Project Mercury, the first manned space program of the United States.
The list goes on and on, the latest in NASA Astronaut statements about UFOs came from the 2005 International Space Station (ISS) Commander, Leroy Chiao. You can read more about that HERE.
Here is a video of John Podesta, who was recently appointed as councillor to Barack Obama, supporting UFO disclosure.
Some of the most extraordinary statements about UFOs and extraterrestrials come from persons who have held some of the highest positions known – those who would be in a position to ‘know’ about possible extraterrestrial encounters.
“Behind the scenes, high ranking Air Force officers are soberly concerned about UFOs. But through official secrecy and ridicule, many citizens are led to believe the unknown flying objects are nonsense.” Former head of CIA, Roscoe Hillenkoetter, 1960 (source)
“There is a serious possibility that we are being visited and have been visited for many years by people from outer space, by other civilizations. Who they are, where they are from, and what they want should be the subject of rigorous scientific investigation and not be the subject of ‘rubishing’ by tabloid newspapers.” (source) – Lord Admiral Hill-Norton, Former Chief of Defence Staff, 5 Star Admiral of the Royal Navy, Chairman of the NATO Military Committee
” Everything is in a process of investigation both in the United States and in Spain, as well as the rest of the world. The nations of the world are currently working together in the investigation of the UFO phenomenon. There is an international exchange of data.” – General Carlos Castro Cavero (1979). From “UFOs and the National Security State, Volume 2,? written by Richard Dolan.
The list of military whistleblowers is extensive, there are hundreds of them and hundreds of quotes to choose from. To view military whistleblowers (with verified backgrounds) give a press conference at The National Press Club about UFOs deactivating nuclear weapons, click HERE. You can also look up Dr. Steven Greer and the disclosure project.
The list of quotes from all fields, from many people, is outstanding. I could literally fill pages upon pages so I’ll stop here, I think you get the picture.
“There is another way whether it’s wormholes or warping space, there’s got to be a way to generate energy so that you can pull it out of the vacuum, and the fact that they’re here shows us that they found a way.” (source) – Jack Kasher, Ph.D, Professor Emeritus of physics, University of Nebraska.
In this clip, it seems he (Dr. Jack Kasher) is referring to FREE ENERGY.
“This thing has gotten so highly-classified… it is just impossible to get anything on it. I have no idea who controls the flow of need-to-know because, frankly, I was told in such an emphatic way that it was none of my business that I’ve never tried to make it to be my business since. I have been interested in this subject for a long time and I do know that whatever the Air Force has on the subject is going to remain highly classified.” – Senator Barry Goldwater, Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee (source)
3. The Evidence of UFOs
Within the past few years, dozens of governments have admitted to allocating resources and having programs to study the UFO phenomenon. For instance, in Canada the RCMP, Transport Canada, and the Department of National Defence recently admitted to tracking UFOs and investigating them. (source) They’ve been doing it for years, accumulating thousands upon thousands of UFO related documents. Many of these documents have since been officially released.
HERE is the latest batch of UFO files released from the United Kingdom.
Documents released by the National Security Agency (NSA) reveal what is recorded when a UFO is being tracked on radar. HERE is one example. HERE is a 4 page U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency and NSA report describing a particular encounter in great detail.
“As the F-4 approached a range of 25 nautical miles it lost all instrumentation and communications. When the F-4 turned away from the object and apparently was no longer a threat to it, the aircraft regained all instrumentation and communications. Another brightly lighted object came out of the original object. The second object headed straight toward the F4.”
You can read more about the radar tracking of UFOs HERE.
HERE is a Wikileak cable that describes how some politicians already know we are not alone in the universe. You can read more about that HERE.
Thousands upon thousands of UFO related documents are now available in the public domain. For a summary of more documents that have been declassified and made available, check out this 10 minute video by Richard Dolan, and see for yourself what type of information is out there.
4. Mass Mainstream Media Attention
Media outlets of all kind are covering the topic, almost every movie that comes out these days has something to do with space or some kind of extraterrestrial intelligence. We’ve been bombarded with the topic for a while now, so it’s easy to see why it’s on the minds of many.
The most recent case of mainstream extraterrestrial ‘noise’ was made when scientists spoke to the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology. Dan Werthimer of the SETI Research Centre at the University of California, Berkeley, recently called for more funding to be allocated to the search for extraterrestrial life, since he is “close to 100 percent” certain that we are not alone. (source)
In mid 2013, the same committee held a hearing about exoplanet discoveries, but perhaps one of the largest UFO/extraterrestrial hearings was at the National Press Club, which also took place in mid-2013. At this event, hundreds of researchers, activists, and military/agency/political witnesses representing ten countries gave UFO/extraterrestrial testimony to six former members of the United States Congress about events and evidence indicating an extraterrestrial presence engaging the human race.
Former Sen. Mike Gravel (D-Alaska), and 2008 presidential candidate said that there is “an extraterrestrial influence that is investigating our planet. Something is monitoring the planet and they are monitoring it very cautiously.” You can learn more about the citizens hearing here.
Apart from these events, UFOs are a constant topic of interest in today’s mainstream news. Unfortunately, most mainstream media outlets seek to ridicule, rather than investigate, the subject properly.

HERE is a clip on the same topic on CBC news.
5. Personal Experience & Video Footage
ufoThere are millions of people out there claiming to have contact with extraterrestrial beings. This has played a large role in spreading the influence of extraterrestrial interest across the world. All of us seem to be naturally fascinated with the unknown, especially when it comes to space. It is simply in our nature.
Neuroscience can now explain what happens to our body when we meditate, but it’s something we all knew to be beneficial before the science explained why. Is extraterrestrial life similar? Is it something we all feel deep down inside, something we don’t need proof for (though it does exist)?
Besides the thousands of videos available on YouTube, there is some very fascinating officially documented UFO footage available for us to see. Click HERE to see raw footage of a UFO showing up in Norway for scientists at their observatory.
Click HERE to see film from the 1991 NASA STS-48 Discovery Space Shuttle mission. It’s some of the best officially documented UFO footage out there today.
HERE is a video that made headlines once released. It came from straight front the Mexican Air Force. Do a quick UFO search on YouTube and, while you’ll see many fakes, you’ll also find many real videos of unknown aerial objects.
Final Thoughts
A few years ago the question was, “Do UFOs exist?” Today that question has been answered, and the presence of UFOs performing maneuvers that defy our laws of physics has been well documented. The question has more so shifted to, “Is that an extraterrestrial spacecraft?”
It’s nothing to fear, in my opinion they’ve been around forever. They were aware of us long before we became aware of them. As speculated with our ancient civilizations in Earth’s brief past, perhaps they will one day interact with humanity again. I guess we will see.
Perhaps some groups are concerned about our planet, and come here further pushing the idea that we need to start changing the way we are doing things here. Perhaps one day soon we will find out.
I definitely believe that a good chunk of these UFOs are of extraterrestrial origin. I also believe that many of these crafts are “ours.”

Lost Tapes Reveal Apollo Astronauts Heard Unexplained ‘Music
The crew of an Apollo mission to the moon were so startled when they encountered strange music-like radio transmissions coming through their headsets, they didn't know whether or not to report it to NASA, it's been revealed.
It was 1969, two months before Apollo 11's historic first manned landing on the moon, when Apollo 10 entered lunar orbit, which included traversing the far side of the moon when all spacecraft are out of radio contact with Earth for about an hour and nobody on Earth can see or hear them.
As far as the public knew, everything about the mission went smoothly.
Almost four decades went by before lost recordings emerged that revealed something unsettling that the three Apollo astronauts had experienced while flying above the far side of the moon.
The taped recordings contained "strange, otherworldly music coming through the Apollo module's radio," according to the upcoming Science Channel series, "NASA's Unexplained Files."
The conversation between the three astronauts indicated they heard sounds like they had never heard before:
"It sounds like, you know, outer space-type music."
"You hear that? That whistling sound? Whooooooooo!"
"Well, that sure is weird music!"
The unexplained "music" transmission lasted almost an hour, and just before the astronauts regained radio contact with Earth, they discussed whether or not to tell Mission Control what they had experienced:
"It's unbelievable! You know?"
"Shall we tell them about it?"
"I don't know. We ought to think about it."
"The Apollo 10 crew was very used to the kind of noise that they should be hearing. Logic tells me that if there was something recorded on there, then there was something there," Apollo 15 astronaut Al Worden says on the Science Channel program. "NASA would withhold information from the public if they thought it was in the public's best interest."
The transcripts of the Apollo 10 mission were classified and untouched in NASA's archives until 2008, producing an ongoing debate as to the nature and origin of the strange sounds heard by the astronauts.
"You don't hear about anything like that until years after the incident occurs, and then you kind of wonder, because it's such an old memory of those things that you get concerned about if they were making something up or was there something really there? Because you never really know," Worden told The Huffington Post.
NASA
Apollo 15 command module pilot Al Worden says he has a very open mind about what could've happened.
"If you're behind the moon and hear some weird noise on your radio, and you know you're blocked from the Earth, then what could you possibly think?" Worden said.
"We'd had a lot of incidents where guys who flew in space saw and heard things that they didn't recognize, and you wonder about all of that. I have a very open mind about what could've happened. It's somebody's hearsay evidence -- it's only a visual or audio event, which is hard to pin down. Recollection is one thing, but actual proof is something entirely different."
Watch this entire incident unfold on Science Channel's "NASA's Unexplained Files." A sneak preview of the the third season premieres Sunday, Feb. 21 at 10 p.m. and the regular season returns Feb. 23. Check your local listings.
Syfy UFO Documentary Government Secret Truth Exposed Aliens on the Moon Full HD 2015
Another former astronaut and Princeton physics professor says:
Russian Official Proposes International Investigation Into U.S. Moon Landings
An international probe should be launched into various murky details surrounding the U.S. moon landings between 1969 and 1972, Russia's Investigative Committee spokesman said Tuesday.
Vladimir Markin penned a column for the Izvestia newspaper arguing that U.S. authorities had crossed a line by launching a large-scale corruption probe targeting nine FIFA officials. The scandal surrounding the case prompted the June 2 resignation of longtime FIFA president Sepp Blatter, and sparked a heated debate about Russia's role as host of the 2018 World Cup.
Venting his frustration with what he viewed as "U.S. prosecutors having declared themselves the supreme arbiters of international football affairs," Markin proposed that international investigators could likewise examine some of the murkier elements of America's past.
An international investigation could help solve the mystery of the disappearance of film footage from the original moon landing in 1969, or explain where the nearly 400 kilograms of lunar rock reportedly obtained during several such missions between 1969 and 1972 have been spirited away to, Markin suggested.
"We are not contending that they did not fly [to the moon], and simply made a film about it. But all of these scientific — or perhaps cultural — artifacts are part of the legacy of humanity, and their disappearance without a trace is our common loss. An investigation will reveal what happened," Markin wrote.
U.S. space agency NASA admitted in 2009 that the original recordings of the first moon landing had been erased, but said they had managed to remaster the original television broadcast of the landing, Reuters reported at the time.
Of the approximately 380 kilograms of moon rock said to have been obtained during manned U.S. moon landings, the bulk is stored in the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Texas, though samples can be seen on display in various museums around the world.

Another Interesting Leak: A Second NASA Scientist Tells Us That ‘Somebody Else’ Is On The Moon
We live in a strange world, and as Neil Armstrong once said, there are “great ideas undiscovered, breakthroughs available to those who can remove one of the truth’s protective layers.” (source) (source)
Fast forward to today, and a number of people have become aware of the fact that not all of what goes on behind the scenes is made public. This is precisely why the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) was created; it’s a federal freedom of information law that allows for the full or partial disclosure of previously unreleased information and documents controlled by the United States government.
There are still many obstacles in the way of full transparency, one of which is the use of ‘national security’ to keep information classified and hidden from public viewing. This has become more evident with the revelations of WikiLeaks and Edward Snowden, but the problem goes deeper still. Did you know that the U.S government classifies roughly five hundred million pages of documents every single year? This is a completely separate topic in itself and if you’re interested in learning more about this, you can check out our article about the ‘Black Budget.’
NASA Scientists & What They Say About The Moon
Multiple NASA personnel have made some pretty shocking claims about the Moon. George Leonard, a NASA scientist and photo analyst who obtained various official NASA photographs of the Moon, many of which he published in his book titled Somebody Else Is On The Moon, is just one of these personnel.
Although the photos are small in size and their resolution is not up to today’s standards, they show details of original prints which were huge. While Leonard published the identifying code numbers of the photos in his works to back up their source, we still can’t say for sure that they were real, and their poor resolution only makes matters worse. Far more compelling than these photos are his statements about what was found on the Moon, along with his verified NASA credentials. Leonard was not the only one with a credible background trying to tell the world the truth regarding the Moon and the photos that were taken from the Apollo missions.
“Ladies and gentlemen, my government, NASA, which many of us in the United States say stands for Never A Straight Answer, proceeded to erase 40 rolls of film of the Apollo Program — the flight to the Moon, the flight around the Moon, the landings on the Moon, the walking guys here and there. They erased, for Christ’s sake, 40 rolls of film of those events. Now we’re talking about several thousand individual frames that were taken that the so-called authorities determined that you did not have a right to see. Oh, they were ‘disruptive,’ ‘socially unacceptable,’ ‘politically unacceptable.’ I’ve become furious. I’m a retired Command Sergeant Major. I was never famous for having a lot of patience.” (source)
The quote above is from Bob Dean, who was speaking at a conference in Europe. Bob is a retired US Army Command Sargent Major, and he also served at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) of NATO as an intelligence analyst.
When it comes to the UFO phenomenon, we now have public disclosure of thousands of documents along with hundreds of credible witness testimonies. But that is a separate topic, which you can learn more about here.
It’s also important to note here that the Russian government recently called for an international investigation into the U.S. moon landings regarding the disappearance of film footage from the original moon landing in 1969. They are also referring to the (approximately) 400 kilograms of lunar rock that was obtained during multiple missions between 1969 and 1972. (source)
Leonard argued that NASA knew about extraterrestrial activity on the Moon and attempted to hide that information. He’s not the only one to make such an assertion.
“Read the books, read the lore, start to understand what has really been going on, because there is no doubt that we are being visited. . . . The universe that we live in is much more wondrous, exciting, complex and far reaching than we were ever able to know up to this point in time. . . . [Mankind has long wondered if we’re] alone in the universe. [But] only in our period do we really have evidence. No, we’re not alone.” – Dr. Edgar Mitchell, ScD., NASA astronaut (6th man to walk on the moon)
Here is a clip of NASA astronaut Dr. Brian O’Leary saying the same thing.
Leonard is not the only NASA scientist to say some strange things about the Moon. Recently, a plasma scientist by the name of Dr. John Brandenburg said the same thing. He was the Deputy Manager of the Clementine Mission to the Moon, which was part of a joint space project between the Ballistic Missile Defence Organization (BMDO) and NASA. The mission discovered water at the Moon’s poles in 1994. (Source: page 16 of 18)(source)(source)
According to Brandenburg in an interview from this documentary:
It was (the Clementine Mission) a photo reconnaissance mission basically to check out if someone was building bases on the moon that we didn’t know about. Were they expanding them?
He then went on to state that:
Of all the pictures I’ve seen from the moon that show possible structures, the most impressive is a picture of a miles wide recto-linear structure. This looked unmistakably artificial, and it shouldn’t be there. As somebody in the space defence community, I look on any such structure on the moon with great concern because it isn’t ours, there’s no way we could have built such a thing. It means someone else is up there.
If you were to tell the average person that you think another civilization, advanced enough to have mastered space travel, had been to the Moon before we got there and is possibly still going there, you would, without a doubt, receive some very peculiar looks in return. On the other hand, if that other person were to decide to hear you out, you would probably get their attention pretty quickly. For some, this type of information can be overwhelming, even terrifying, and that’s okay. Many people are not ready to open their minds up to these possibilities, but the truth of the matter is, it’s something we are going to have to confront eventually. We are clearly heading towards the inevitable reality of extraterrestrial contact — that is, if we smarten up and start taking care of our planet to the best of our ability. Perhaps we can make it long enough to realize this future, or maybe it’s coming sooner than we think.
That being said, there is a good deal of evidence to suggest that extraterrestrial contact is already happening, and if you’re interested in learning more about that you can visit the exopolitics section of our website, located HERE.

Have Gravitational Waves Finally Been Spotted?
February 8, 2016 05:04pm ET
Astronomers may finally have found elusive gravitational waves, the mysterious ripples in the fabric of spacetime whose existence was first predicted by Albert Einstein in 1916, in his famous theory of general relativity.
Scientists are holding a news conference Thursday (Feb. 11) at 10:30 a.m. EST (1530 GMT) at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., to discuss the search for gravitational waves, which zoom through space at the speed of light.
A media advisory describing the news conference is brief and somewhat vague, promising merely a "status report" on the ongoing hunt by the scientists using the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, or LIGO. But there's reason to suspect that researchers will announce a big discovery at the Thursday event. [The Search for Gravitational Waves (Gallery)]
Rumors have been swirling for several months that the LIGO group has spotted gravitational waves. Arizona State University cosmologist Lawrence Krauss (who's not a LIGO team member) first tweeted this rumor in September, and then repeated it in another tweet Jan. 11.
And Wednesday (Feb. 3), theoretical physicist Cliff Burgess, of McMaster University and the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Ontario, fleshed the rumor out with a fair bit of purported detail. In an email he sent to the entire McMaster physics department (which eventually found its way onto Twitter), Burgess — who, like Krauss, is not part of the LIGO team — wrote that sources told him that LIGO has detected gravitational waves produced by the merger of two black holes. The discovery will be published Thursday in the prestigious journal Nature, Burgess added, as reported by Science magazine.
Using laser beams, scientists could detect the physical distortions caused by passing gravitational waves. <a href="http://www.space.com/25445-how-ligo-lasers-hunt-gravitational-waves-infographic.html">See how the LIGO observatory hunts gravitational waves in this Space.com infographic</a>.
Using laser beams, scientists could detect the physical distortions caused by passing gravitational waves. See how the LIGO observatory hunts gravitational waves in this Space.com
Einstein's equations showed that gravitational waves should be generated by the acceleration of massive objects. (The most dramatic or catastrophic events — such as supernova explosions and black-hole mergers — should produce the strongest waves.) These distortions in spacetime then radiate outward at the speed of light.
LIGO is a set of two identical, supersensitive detectors that researchers built in Livingston, Louisiana and Hanford, Washington to pick up the tiny movements of spacetime caused by gravitational waves that reach Earth.
Each LIGO detector beams laser light down arms 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) long, which are arranged in the shape of an "L." If a gravitational wave passes through the detector system, the distance traveled by the laser beam changes by a minuscule amount — thousands of times smaller than the diameter of an atomic nucleus. Still, the LIGO gear should be able to pick this difference up, mission team members have said.
If LIGO — which is operated by MIT and the California Institute of Technology, and funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation — has indeed directly detected gravitational waves for the first time, a new era has likely opened up in astronomy and cosmology.
"Since gravitational waves don't interact with matter (unlike electromagnetic radiation), they travel through the universe completely unimpeded, giving us a crystal-clear view of the gravitational-wave universe," LIGO team members wrote in a description of the project.
"They will carry information about their origins that is free of the distortion or alteration suffered by electromagnetic radiation as it travels through millions of light-years of intergalactic space," they added. "With this completely new way of examining astrophysical objects and phenomena, gravitational waves will truly open a new window on the universe, providing astronomers and other scientists with their first glimpses of previously unseen and unseeable wonders, and greatly adding to our understanding of the nature of space and time itself."

Holy crap - NASA Says Mars Appears to Have Flowing Water
This just made human travel to Mars much more possible.
BY TINA NGUYEN
In a press conference on Monday, NASA announced a huge discovery for Mars fans: evidence of flowing water, which drastically increases the chance of human habitation on the red planet and raises the question of whether life previously existed there.

Radio bursts too precise to be random, must be from alien intelligence
April 4, 2015, 11:47 AM CDT | Written by Veronica Cruz
If you were a Morse code clerk receiving messages and came across something that could not be random, you would think it was from humans, i.e. intelligent beings, right? Well, that is more or less what scientists received from outer space in radio bursts.
Mysterious radio bursts received on Earth from deep space were sent in dispersion measures that could not be random occurrences, scientists say, suggesting that they may have come from intelligent aliens.
Professor John Learned from the University of Hawaii said of the fast radio bursts (FRBs) “If the pattern is real … it is very, very hard to explain.”
Scientists would like to know where these fast radio bursts are coming from and what (or who) is sending them.
A radio telescope picked up an FRB last year for the first time since 2001. FRBs are extremely short radio bursts from supposedly billions of miles away in deep space, that last just a few milliseconds.
Astrophysicists have no idea where FRBs come from. Most suggest they originate from several billions of light years from here. However, they could originate much closer to home, they add.
Although extremely short in duration, each FRB has more energy that that released by our Sun in 24 hours.
FRB patterns cannot be natural
Scientists are unable to explain why FRBs appear in a pattern of numbers that seem to follow no laws of physics we know exist – unless they were sent out by an intelligent being.
In New South Wales, Australia, in Novebmer 2014, the CRISO Parkes Radio Telescope captured a ‘live’ FRB. On previous occasions FRBs had only been detected by astronomers several weeks or months after their equipment had picked them up.
Michael Hippke of the Institute for Data Analysis in Neukirchen-Vluyn, in Germany, Wilfried F. Domainko of the Max Planck Institutes, also in Germany, along with Professor Learned explained that the FRB signals had dispersion measures in multiples of precisely 187.5.
This means, they say, that the bursts are coming from sources many billions of light years from Earth at distances which are exactly spaced multiples of each other. They added that the signals might be coming from a much closer source.
Scientists suggest that perhaps FRBs may have come from distant stars or black holes. However, their apparently deliberate patterns also point to something intelligent creating them, many comment.
Hippke, Domainko and Learned wrote:
“We find that FRBs tend to arrive at close to the full integer second, like man-made perytons. If this holds, FRBs would also be man-made. This can be verified, or refuted, with new FRBs to be detected.”
Finding out where FRBs originate
Emily Petroff, a PhD student at Swindurne University, Melbourne, Australia, who observed the ‘live’ FRB in November 2014, said:
“These bursts were generally discovered weeks, months or even more than a decade after they happened. We are the first to catch one in real time.”
Scientists would love to know where in space these FRBs come from, Ms. Petroff said. Most of them estimate they originate from somewhere in space about 5.5 billion light years from Earth.
Ms. Petroff, who is sure we’ll soon find out, said “We’ve set the trap. Now we just have to wait for another burst to fall into it.”

I liked that one. "And here we have a video of the MRV at the bottom of the frame. Oooops what's that. The Mrv at the top of the frame too chasing itself. Good grief, here comes more. It had babies, and they are chasing the mama."
Bright lights on dwarf planet perplex NASA as probe nears
Washington (AFP) - The discovery of another bright light on the dwarf planet Ceres has NASA scientists perplexed as the US Dawn probe prepares to enter the orbit of the largest object in the asteroid belt and possibly resolve the mystery.

The images taken nearly 29,000 miles (46,000 kilometers) from Ceres show that a bright spot on the planet scientists previously discovered appears next to another slightly darker spot, NASA said in a news release.
The light appears in the same basin as the other spot, images released by NASA show.
"This may be pointing to a volcano-like origin of the spots, but we will have to wait for better resolution before we can make such geologic interpretations," Chris Russell from the Dawn mission said.
The Dawn probe will enter the orbit of Ceres March 6. Scientists expect to receive better views of the mystery lights as the spacecraft closes in and spirals nearer the dwarf planet.
"The brightest spot continues to be too small to resolve with our camera, but despite its size it is brighter than anything else on Ceres. This is truly unexpected and still a mystery to us," said scientist Andreas Nathues who is in charge of the camera.
Scientists detected water vapor emitting from Ceres in 2012 and NASA reports the surface of the body contains "water-bearing minerals."
Launched in 2007, the Dawn probe was sent to investigate the two largest bodies in the asteroid belt, which lies between Mars and Jupiter.
Dawn explored giant asteroid Vesta starting in 2011, providing measurements and images. After 2012, the probe left Vesta's orbit and began its journey to Ceres.
Ceres has a diameter of about 590 miles (950 kilometers) and Vesta has a diameter of about 326 miles (525 kilometers).

They Want to Believe: UFO Hunters Plan Database to Track Sightings

An investigative organization has kick-started the creation of a worldwide UFO database, which will allow people around the globe to report their supposed extraterrestrial encounters.
A new tool from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) promises to help demystify the mystique that rides along with skywatchers' interpretations that extraterrestrial intruders are cruising Earth's airspace. But in today's age of video and cellphone cameras, iPhone apps, Twitter and other techniques, can these tools assist or hinder classifying the "strangeness factor" of UFOs?
Is such a database needed, and who cares? Moreover, what's the current status of UFOs in 2015? [Where to Spot UFOs (Infographic)]
Real science
MUFON's plan to plot out a new database is designed to advance the group's investigative and citizen-action sighting efforts.
The organization's mission is the scientific study of UFOs for the benefit of humanity, said Jan Harzan, executive director of MUFON, headquartered in Newport Beach, California. In that regard, he said that fulfilling this scientific quest requires the systematic study of the nature and behavior of the physical universe, based on observation, experiment and measurement.
"To do real science, one would need a way to collect and store observations and measurements taken from a given field of study" — in this case, UFOs — and also to retrieve and correlate this data in the form of analysis and possible experiments, Harzan said.
Detailed observations
Back in 2006, MUFON instituted a database system, inputting nearly 70,000 alleged UFO cases that had been submitted by the public and investigated by certified MUFON field investigators.
"Each month, MUFON receives between 500 and 1,000 UFO reports from all over the globe," Harzan said. "These reports come from many credible sources, including airline pilots, military personnel, former intelligence officers, doctors, lawyers, as well as the general public," with many detailed observations also involving photographs and video.
This information is then stored in the MUFON database and made available to the public and used for scientific analysis, Harzan said.
"Meanwhile, with the explosion of cellphones, video cameras, and print and online media reports, both past and present — as well as tens of thousands of paper UFO files collected by MUFON prior to 2006 — the need to be able to have all this data in one place and easily correlated is all the more important," Harzan told Space.com. That's why there's a need for a "new" global UFO database — "one that is easy to access, easy to use and easy to search, so that information can be correlated based on all sorts of parameters," Harzan added.
Correlations and understandings
The goal is to catalog details like size, shape, color, flight characteristics, date and location from a wide variety of UFO reports, including newspaper and magazine article accounts, photographs and video.
Then, researchers can combine all of these characteristics to draw deeper correlations and understandings, which have the potential to lead to breakthroughs.
"Only then will the full picture emerge regarding the size and scope of this phenomenon and how it is affecting us as a civilization," Harzan said. [Read More News About the Search for Life]
Substantive puzzle
Larry Lemke, a retired aerospace engineer and a member of the executive advisory committee of the National Aviation Reporting Center on Anomalous Phenomena, is calling for the thoughtful scientific study of the UFO phenomenon. His comments represent only his own opinions, not those of any organization with which he may be affiliated.
"I think UFO reports represent a substantive puzzle that warrants serious scientific attention, without advocating any particular position on what the answer to that puzzle is … whether it is purely psychological, purely physical or some combination of the two," he told Space.com.
"Those of us who are old enough to remember the first half of the 'UFO era' have the definite perception that the public discussion of the topic has devolved," Lemke said. "As a society, we are collectively stupider on this subject than we were a generation ago."
Small signal, large amount of noise
There are many reasons for this "dumbing down," Lemke said, but one of them is the leveling effect of the Internet. For quite some time now, he said, it has become trivially easy for an individual to misidentify a rocket launch or a spacecraft re-entry, or to gin up a Photoshop hoax and blast it around the world as a "UFO sighting."
"Then, everyone 'researches,' analyzes and comments on it with all the depth of thought that can fit in a 140-character tweet," Lemke said.
Lemke thinks the main challenge of "UFOlogy" has always been to "decipher a small signal amid a large amount of noise."
"What we need to do is, elevate the conversation to the professional research scientist/engineer level," Lemke said. "At the moment, the action on this front appears to be with private groups in France and Chile who have agreed to cooperate in the open investigation of UFOs. I wish them well in the coming years," he said.

Silliness and superficiality
Well-known UFO debunker James Oberg said he thinks the mass media's UFO coverage is sinking to "even lower lows of silliness and superficiality," such as the steady stream of "UFOs buzz the International Space Station" fairy tales.
"It gets harder and harder to filter out the truly interesting reports that are lost in the noise and garble," Oberg said, and he has found some such reports.
"They don't have to be alien visitors, and I have seen no convincing evidence for even a single event of this nature," Oberg said. "But they often can be secret military aerospace activity, particularly in Russia and China," and that fully explains U.S. military intelligence agency interest in foreign "UFO reports," he said.
"Any number of human agencies can — and probably has — found it useful to be mistaken by the public for flying-saucer visits, but that usually seems opportunistic rather than deliberate," Oberg added. "These can be governments, corporations, even criminal enterprises. Once in a while, a hoaxer or spoofing club adds more mud to the water."
Cultural 'garble factor'
But sometimes, interesting natural phenomena do get swept into the mix — and, through guilt by association, don't get the scientific attention they deserve, Oberg said. [UFO Quiz: What's Really Out There]
"So, diligent records-keeping, report writing, witness interviews, as conducted by generations of seriously interested private part-time investigators, can provide information which only years or decades later makes sense. It may not be the explanations most of them were hoping for, but it makes their work honorable and constructive all the same," Oberg said. "Kudos to them — may their tribe increase!"
Taking a long look, Oberg said that there is no denying the prospect that humanity may someday encounter evidence for the activity of genuine extraterrestrial intelligence, somewhere.
"It may be shockingly overt or gently subtle," he said. "The current cultural garble factor of 'UFO reports' probably is a serious hindrance to recognizing the latter kind of detection."
Hacked by Occam's razor
Writer and UFO skeptic Robert Sheaffer said that part of the problem with so-called UFOlogy lies in separating science fiction from real science.
"The major fault line in UFOlogy today is the division between what can be called 'new-age' UFOlogy and what its proponents call 'scientific' UFOlogy … but is, in reality, science fiction," Sheaffer said. Both are junk science, he said, and consistently ignore Occam's razor — that is, all other things being equal, the simplest solution is the best.
"Proponents fail to reconcile whatever hypotheses they invent with the rest of the body of established scientific fact," Sheaffer told Space.com. "While the dividing line between the two groups is not hard and fast — and some UFO claims will contain elements of both — most major UFOlogists and UFO groups will fit clearly into one group or the other."
Sheaffer said that MUFON is not the first attempt to build a major UFO database, but merely the latest. Some have even sought to augment data collection with a "rapid response team" to go out and do real-time, on-site investigations, he said.
"None of these attempts have ever been successful," Sheaffer said.

Tabloid trash
The current trend in UFOlogy seems to be toward "tabloid trash," especially as seen in television shows like "Ancient Aliens," Sheaffer said.
In the reporting and investigation of UFO sightings, MUFON claims it strives to use the scientific method, Sheaffer said. But MUFON's promotion of itself through the tabloid trash cable TV show "Hangar 1" "has caused it to lose whatever claims it once had to scientific respectability." [7 Things Most Likely Mistaken for UFOs]
"'Hangar 1'is supposed to be the place MUFON's supposedly vast collection of UFO data, or UFO stories, is kept," Sheaffer said. "And what, exactly, does MUFON serve up from its precious archives? Some of the most preposterous, unsubstantiated stories in the UFO literature, and some outright fabrications."
In that recently debuted cable TV series, "the scientific method is nowhere to be seen," Sheaffer said.
True benefit
Doubters aside, MUFON's Harzan is resolute in his view that unraveling the UFO saga can have several clear benefits for humanity. For one, deciphering the technology these craft display, he said, would mean far faster terrestrial transportation, not to mention trips off-planet.
"A second major benefit would be breakthroughs in the energy these craft use to power themselves," Harzan said. "From the thousands of observations we have, they are not using propellers, jet engines or rocket motors to propel themselves, nor do they require large fuel tanks."
But Harzan said that the greatest benefit of understanding UFOs — if they are, in fact, advanced otherworldly craft with intelligent beings onboard — "would be the way that we look at ourselves as a human race, and where our place in God's great creation is amongst all the other sentient life he has created in the universe."
Harzan's personal view is that once humanity grasps that we are all part of the same human race, perhaps the need for wars due to our differences will end. "Now that would be a true benefit to everyone on this planet," he concluded.

How The New Mega-Earth Will Change Our Search For Extraterrestrial Life
On June 2, scientists announced the discovery of a brand new type of planet — a rocky giant 17 times Earth's mass, which they dubbed a "mega-Earth."
Mega-Earths were thought to be impossible based on what we know and thought about how planets form. This planet's existence prompts many questions about rocky planets — the most likely candidates to harbor life.
While the mega-Earth itself is thought to be too close to its sun and too hot to harbor life, its discovery has changed how we think about searching for habitable exoplanets in two big ways:
Huge and habitable
It was previously thought that once a planet reached the mass of 10 Earths, it would accrue so much hydrogen that it would turn into a gas giant like Jupiter, a planet without a surface.
Because of this, scientists had not looked to these large planets as places where life could form, or more specifically, where we could land and set up shop (in the distant future in which interstellar travel might be possible).
Ancient Earths
Not only did they think the planet was too big to be rocky, they also thought it was too old.
The mega-Earth orbits a star that is 11 billion years old, formed less than 3 billion years after the Big Bang. At that time, the ingredients to make a rocky planet were scarce.
Scientists were very surprised to find a rocky ancient planet that had formed when its constituent ingredients were not abundant in the universe.
We may now have to cast a second look on ancient solar systems since we previously thought they could never have rocky, Earth-like planets.
The search begins anew
With these two extraordinary facts in hand, scientists may want to rescan solar systems with giant or old planets, to check if they could be rocky and Earth-like instead of gaseous. This discovery is likely to lead to many more mega-Earth planets, hopefully ones ripe for life.
One equation in particular shows just how a new type of potentially habitable planet could change the life-hunting game: the Drake equation. It's a way of estimating the number of intelligent communicative civilizations that might exist in the Milky Way.
Here it is in its full mathy goodness, thanks to Wikipedia:
Screen Shot 2014 06 03 at 1.30.59 PM
Screenshot from Wikipedia Drake Equation
While the equation is controversial and is primarily used for "stimulating intellectual curiosity," it is interesting to consider how it might change in light of the new findings.
The mega-Earth finding is likely to increase the variable ne,the number of planets in a solar system suitable for life. That will increase our estimation of the N, the number of intelligent, extraterrestrial civilizations out there.
Without finding this mega-Earth we might never have thought to look at these giant planets.

At 40th anniversary of Pascagoula UFO incident, survivor says it turned his life upside down
http://www.edmontonjournal.com/technology/40th+anniversary+Pascagoula+incident+survivor+says+turned/9025630/story.html
In this Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013 photo, Calvin Parker, Jr., stands in the area where he and fellow Mississippian Charles Hickson were allegedly abducted by aliens on Oct. 11,1973, on the banks of the Pascagoula River in Pascagoula Miss. The incident made headlines, sparked UFO sightings nationwide and became one of the most widely examined cases on record. (AP Photo/Gerald Herbert)
PASCAGOULA, Miss. - Charles Hickson never regretted the notoriety that came his way after he told authorities he encountered an unidentified flying object and its occupants 40 years ago on the banks of the Pascagoula River. Until his death in 2011, Hickson told his story to anyone who would listen.
But Calvin Parker Jr., the other man present for one of the most high-profile UFO cases in American history, has never come to terms with what he still says was a visit with grey, crab-clawed creatures from somewhere else. He says the encounter on Oct. 11, 1973, turned his life upside down.
"This is something I really didn't want to happen," Parker told The Associated Press as the 40th anniversary of the encounter approached.
Parker was unnerved by initial crush of unwelcome attention, with newsmen and UFO enthusiasts overrunning Walker Shipyard, where he and Hickson worked. He tried to dodge the spotlight for decades, moving frequently before returning to Mississippi's Gulf Coast in recent years.
The incident made headlines, sparked a wave of UFO sightings nationwide and became one of the most widely examined cases on record. Skeptics ranged from the deputies who first interviewed the men to an author who sought to poke holes in the story, and Parker himself has had conflicting thoughts about whether he was visited by aliens or demons.
Parker, now 58, was 18 when he went fishing with Hickson on a tranquil Thursday night after work.
As they dangled their lines without much luck, the two said a UFO with blue lights swooped down. They told of a zipping noise made by the object.
Hickson, then 42, said three creatures with leathery grey skin and crab-like claws — he thought they were robots — took them by the forearms and levitated them aboard the craft. He said something that looked like a large floating eye appeared to examine him.
Parker says he was conscious but paralyzed.
"They gave a thorough, I mean a thorough, examination to me just like any doctor would," he said.
And then they were back on the shore, where it all began. The UFO was gone and Parker said they tried to collect themselves. Hickson needed three shots of liquor from a bottle in his car to calm his nerves before deciding to report what happened.
At the Jackson County Sheriff's Department, deputies initially suspected both men were drunk. Then-Capt. Glenn Ryder, who still works for the sheriff's office, said he laughed at the report, but met with the men. Parker and Hickson stuck to their story.
After the formal interview, deputies left Hickson and Parker together in a room with a hidden tape recorder, hoping to catch them in a lie.
"Me and the other investigator got up and left to let them talk, to see if they were going to say, 'Well, we got them fooled,' but they didn't," Ryder said. "They were really concerned."
On the tape, Hickson tells Parker, "It scared me to death too, son. You can't get over it in a lifetime. Jesus Christ have mercy."
"I don't know what happened to them," Ryder said. "I wasn't there with them, but I know you don't fake fear, and they were fearful. They were fearful."
The next afternoon, the story was splashed across the front pages of newspapers in Pascagoula and Gulfport. Overnight, Pascagoula became a magnet for news reporters and UFO investigators.
Widespread interest in UFOs began in the 1940s with an incident at Roswell N.M., in which UFO enthusiasts believe the government got its hands on a crashed UFO and alien bodies. The government spent decades denying it.
In the 1960s, interest flared anew with a series of reports, including the purported alien abduction of New Hampshire couple Betty and Barney Hill in 1961. The widespread attention to the Pascagoula encounter set off a new round of reports.
In south Mississippi, hundreds of reports overwhelmed authorities in the two weeks after the Hickson-Parker encounter.
There were hoaxes and humour too. A Long Beach, Miss., taxi driver told police a being with pincers tapped on his window, a story he admitted days later was fake.
A Mobile, Ala., television station said it would record a UFO appearance predicted by a psychic between Mobile and nearby Pascagoula. Roughly 1,000 cars converged on the spot, where nothing happened.
An Ocean Springs alderman proposed an ordinance making it illegal to operate a UFO at more than twice the speed of light on U.S. 90, the coast's main drag. Mayor Tom Stennis voted against the ordinance, joking he didn't want to discourage tourism.
UFO skeptic Philip Klass believed Hickson and Parker's report was a hoax. In his book "UFOs Explained," he noted Hickson changed some details of his story and claimed a polygraph operator whose test Hickson passed wasn't up to the task. Parker later passed a lie detector test himself.
Hickson would go on to appear on talk shows, give lectures and interviews, and self-publish a book in 1983 titled "UFO Contact at Pascagoula." He reported three more encounters in 1974, and said the aliens communicated to him that they were peaceful.
"The only thing he wanted to do was let everybody know we were not alone," said Eddie Hickson, his son. "He didn't care if you believed him or not. If you wanted to listen, by gum, he'd tell you."
"He could never understand why he was chosen," the younger Hickson added. "But he never once told me that he wished it had never happened. Never."
Parker said the intrusions by curiosity seekers have become less frequent over the years, but have never really let up. "You don't never have no privacy," he said.
Parker married later in 1973 and eventually took oil industry and out-of-state construction jobs to escape the attention.
"By the time you get somewhere and they figure out who you were, I'd just go," he said. "I'd just go find another job somewhere."
Parker attended some UFO conventions, and was once hypnotized by Budd Hopkins, a noted UFO investigator. He briefly tried to capitalize on his story in 1993 by starting a Louisiana company called UFO Investigations where he and partners would produce television segments on the subject.
Parker moved to Moss Point in 2006 and in 2010 suffered a stroke that limited him physically. He's on disability aid now, but sometimes boats by the site of the encounter when he goes fishing. He said that just recently he met a woman at a gas station who already knew who he was.
"I'm always recognized," he said.
There's no historical marker on the river bank noting the encounter, and stores don't sell UFO souvenirs. But local people remember — though often with skepticism and jokes.
For his part, Parker said he's had conflicting thoughts over the years about that night in 1973. At one point, he wasn't even sure the creatures were aliens. They might have been demons, he said.
"I'm a firm believer in God and where there's good, there's bad," Parker said.

A Colonial UFO Sighting
http://www.syracusenewtimes.com/newyork/article-7533-a-colonial-ufo-sight.html
It was a clear summer evening in 1790. A settler in New York’s Schoharie County was sitting on the porch of his dwelling playing his fiddle. About 9 p.m., a bright shining light appeared in the northern sky with a great roar. He indicates that it grew in intensity until it would have outshown the noonday sun. The resident remarked that the light was so bright that he could have “… picked up pins in every corner.”
The German colonist said he saw what appeared to be a meteor passing west of him at a distance of about 250 yards and about 65 feet above the ground. He states that it kept close to the ground on the other side of the hollow. As the object moved over the countryside, it met with a rise of tall trees and as it did, it rose above them and continued on with the speed of galloping horse. When the object came upon the foot of a noted hill that the Indians called “Owelus Sowless,” it ascended as the ground rose and flew over the hill. The settler said that’s where he lost sight of it.
He describes “the meteor” as about 300 yards long. It had a snake-like shape, except that the apparent head “… resembled the root of a tree plucked up by force.” There was no appearance of a neck, and it was as thick as a young bull and tapered off like a serpent. Its appearance resembled “… a welding hot iron and sparking like it.”
He further stated that the intense heat warmed his entire house. He further reported that it left a stench similar to burning tar or sulfur that lingered for at least a another day.
The UFO observer was part of the first German settlement in Schoharie County. The settler swore out his story in the town of Carlisle on Aug. 23, 1823. The account was in the records of The Historical and Philosophical Society of the State of New York.

Dr. Jesse Marcel Jr., who said he handled debris from the 1947 crash of an unidentified flying object near Roswell, New Mexico, has died at the age of 76.
Denice Marcel said her father was found dead at his home in Helena on Saturday, less than two months after making his last trip to Roswell. He had been reading a book about UFOs.
Over the past 35 years, Marcel Jr. appeared on TV shows, documentaries and radio shows; was interviewed for magazine articles and books, and traveled the world lecturing about his experiences in Roswell.
"He was credible. He wasn't lying. He never embellished—only told what he saw," his wife Linda said.
Marcel's father was an Air Force intelligence officer and reportedly the first military officer to investigate the wreckage in early July 1947. Marcel Jr. said he was 10 when his father brought home some of the debris, woke him up in the middle of the night and said the boy needed to look at it because it was something he would never see again.
His father maintained the debris "was not of this Earth," Linda Marcel said. "They looked through the pieces, tried to make sense of it."
The item that Marcel Jr. said fascinated him the most was a small beam with some sort of purple-hued hieroglyphics on it, she said.
After an initial report that a flying saucer had been recovered on a ranch near Roswell, the military issued a statement saying the debris was from a weather balloon.
"They were told to keep it quiet and they did for years and years and years," Linda Marcel said. Interest in the case was revived, however, when physicist and UFO researcher Stanton Friedman spoke with Jesse Marcel Sr. in the late 1970s.
Friedman wrote the forward to Marcel Jr.'s 2007 book "The Roswell Legacy," and described him as a courageous man who "set a standard for honesty and decency and telling the truth."
"His legacy is that he had the courage to speak out when he didn't have to about handling wreckage that his Dad brought home," Friedman said Tuesday. "He worked with artists to come up with what the symbols on the wreckage looked like. He didn't have to do that. He could have kept his mouth shut. A lot of people did."
On his last trip to Roswell in early July, UFO researcher and Earth science professor Frank Kimbler arranged for Marcel to visit the debris site and his childhood home.
"I remember my dad did say that he loved the ride up to the site that day because he was able to discuss science with Frank," Denice Marcel said in an email to The Associated Press. "One thing about my Dad, he was always reading something on astronomy or some kind of scientific journal. He loved astronomy with a passion."
Marcel Jr. graduated from medical school at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in 1961 and joined the U.S. Navy in 1962. He retired after nine years but later joined the Montana Army National Guard and became a flight surgeon in 1981. He was called back to active duty in October 2004 and served as a flight surgeon in Iraq for just over a year. He reached the rank of colonel.
"I know that one of the things that Dad would love to say is, 'If we are the only ones here then there is an awful lot of wasted space out there,'" Denice Marcel said. "He wasn't the first one to say this, but he did believe it. He also believed that everyone needed to know the truth, and that the Roswell Incident was a real event and that it was time for the cover-up to stop."
He is survived by his wife and eight children. Funeral services are pending.
From an email: Dear Colleagues,
I just discovered within my archives another Barry Goldwater
piece where he talks about UFOs. I have uploaded the audio and

Subject: Barry Goldwater UFO Radio Excerpt
Background:
Back in April 6, 2008 I informed Grant Cameron that I obtained
video interview with Barry Goldwater where he mentioned his
attempt to gain access to Blue Room at Wright-Patterson through
General Curtis LeMay. That piece was broadcast October 1, 1994
on Larry King Live From Area 51.
I was able to get the complete DVD recording from an archivist
in Ohio from which I extracted the excerpt. I exchanged various
UFO related material with that archivist for many months via
snail mail.
After I sent video to Grant, his webmaster Paul Robinson
uploaded it to YouTube and its available here:
http://tinyurl.com/na9las
Since then, it was viewed many times in the UFO community.
Today, while I was transferring some of my archives to a new HDD
with 2Tb of space, I stumbled on another Barry Goldwater piece
that I was not even aware that I have. I probably obtained it a
long time ago in a set of audio files that I have in
a folder.
After some research I was able to determine that it was recorded
by host Mike Murphy - who was interested in UFOs - from KCMO

Off Topic: Mammoth find: Preserved Ice Age giant found with flowing blood in Siberia
Russian scientists discovered a fully-grown female mammoth with blood and well-preserved muscle tissue trapped in ice in Siberia. The findings come amid debates on whether the extinct species should be resurrected using DNA.
Scientists say they have managed to find mammoth blood during the excavation of a grown female animal on the Lyakhovsky Islands, the southernmost group of the New Siberian Islands in the Arctic seas of northeastern Russia.
The dark blood was found in ice cavities below the belly of the animal. When researchers broke the cavities with a poll pick, the blood came flowing out. The fact surprised them because the temperature was 10C below zero.
"It can be assumed that the blood of mammoths had some cryo-protective properties,” said Semyon Grigoriev, head of the Museum of Mammoths of the Institute of Applied Ecology of the North at the North Eastern Federal University as cited by Interfax news agency.
The blood was placed in a test tube and a bacteriological analysis of the sample is expected soon.
The muscle tissue of the animal was also well-preserved and had a natural red color of fresh meat, added the scientist. Such preservation can be explained by the fact that the lower part of the mammoth’s body was trapped in pure ice, while the upper part was discovered in the middle of the tundra. The trunk was found separately from the carcass.
The researchers established that the female mammoth was between 50 and 60 years old when it died. Grigoriev noted that this was a unique find likely to prompt international intrigue.

Colleague Confirms NASA Affiliated Physicist Dr. Eric W. Davis'
UFO Research
By James Maynard Gelinas
Astrophysicist Dr. Eric W. Davis has a curious interest in UFO
research. He spoke to the UFO matter while giving an address in
2010 at a Society for Scientific Exploration meeting about a
book he had recently co-edited with Dr. Marc Millis, former head
of NASA's Breakthrough Propulsion Physics Project.
Furthermore, while working in an official capacity for NASA in
1999, Dr. Millis attended a venture capital event hosted by
known UFO enthusiast and potential investor Joe Firmage, who had
openly stated his belief in having met an extraterrestrial alien
visitor. This event led to an official investigation at NASA
over potential loss of intellectual property. That investigation
was ultimately dropped.
During the question and answer session, Dr. Davis was asked
whether UFOs had "...guided [the] thinking and research" of such
speculative matters as warp drive and traversable wormholes.
Dr. Davis responded, "Secretly yes and overtly no." He explained
that because "...UFOs don't have credibility with mainstream
academic researchers," and because policy-makers and funding
agencies "...don't like the topic of UFOs," some members of the
group were forced to "...consider it under the table."
Continuing on with his comments, Davis contrasted what he
considered relevant observed UFO phenomena with their work. In
comparing data taken from UFO investigators such as Jacques
Vallee, George Hathaway, and the questioner, he said "we've been
able to use that data as input to give us an idea, and that data
does drive the concepts that we did derive later on [when we
did] the book and [that] went into the original NASA program."
Dr. Davis gave two examples taken from work done at the National
Institute of Discovery Science, a place more colloquially known
as Skinwalker Ranch, where he said investigators and the ranch
owner had apparently twice witnessed wormholes open for
transport. "...we had the experience of one scientist and one
investigator seeing a wormhole – what looked like a wormhole –
with a creature crawling through, and then the ranch owners had
seen an opening in the sky in broad daylight with a triangular
craft that came through it." According to Dr. Davis, this was of
relevance to some investigators at NASA's Breakthrough
Propulsion Physics Project, for it was "...an example of data
that indicates there's a wormhole involved."
The details of Dr. Davis' statement about UFOs, including a full
transcript, were previously printed in the story, "Dr. Eric W.
Davis, of NASA's Breakthrough Propulsion Physics Project,
Discussed UFOs During Lecture."
Dr. Jack Sarfatti, a theoretical physicist who personally knows
Dr. Davis, commented on whether the propulsion specialist has a
longstanding interest in UFO research. "I know Eric Davis... I
am completely aware of his position on this and what his real
secret work is/was about." Dr. Sarfatti then took the
opportunity to challenge Dr. Davis on an arcane matter of warp
drive physics.
In referring to the possibility of UFOs using some manner of
warp drive, Dr. Davis had said, "We haven't seen UFOs do
performances that adhere to the warp drive.... We seem them
doing ninety degree turns and rapid motions; they disappear and
reappear. That is undetermined yet."
Dr. Sarfatti disagreed. "Eric is wrong about no evidence for
warp drive in near earth flight, " Dr. Sarfatti argued. "180
degree turns at high speed is evidence [of warp drive], as is
sudden stopping and apparent dematerialization."
Speaking to Dr. Davis' claim of two wormholes that had
apparently been witnessed at Skinwalker Ranch, Dr Sarfatti
challenged Dr. Davis's line of reasoning. "[Dr. Davis]
contradicts himself when he talks about the possible wormhole on
the [Skinwalker] Ranch. Wormhole and warp drive physics are both
essentially the same and the evidence is that there is a low
power technology for them."
Skinwalker Ranch is a property located in Uintah County, Utah
that is near an area believed by locals and nearby Native
Americans to be a center of anomalous events. There, according
to its website, a group with former military and intelligence
community connections as well as high academic credentials,
along with well known Las Vegas television investigative
reporter George Knapp, have worked together investigating
alleged anomalous events. According to those SSE statements, Dr.
Davis worked for Mr. Bigelow there for six years.
The owner of that property is reclusive billionaire Robert
Bigelow, who is a real estate developer and founder of the
Budget Suite hotel franchise. He has a longstanding public
interest in UFOs and bought the property in 1995 specifically to
investigate those claims. Professional skeptic James Randi once
gave Mr. Bigelow the Pigasus Award for having funded what he
termed a 'useless study' of an 'old haunted ranch.'
But Mr. Bigelow is interested in more than just running a hotel
chain and supporting investigative work into UFOs. In 1999 he
founded Bigelow Aerospace, which seeks to launch an inflatable
space station and possible hotel in orbit and maybe build a base
on the moon. Interestingly, Bigelow Aerospace is only one of two
organizations that, according to FAA guidelines, pilots are
directed to forward UFO reports. A skeptical article on Mr.
Bigelow's UFO aerospace company stated:
"...there is one space-related issue troubling Mr. Bigelow, one
on which he feels the need to obtain, even at potentially great
cost, the best counsel available: UFOs. It is not clear whether
he fears that UFOs will interfere with his future orbiting hotel
chain or if he believes that UFOs harbor some secrets of
propulsion or anti-gravity that his engineers might someday be
able to put to good use. Whichever it is, Bigelow has contracted
MUFON, the largest UFO group in the U.S., with potentially very
large sums of money for the pursuit of first-hand UFO
information. Indeed, longtime UFO activist Ed Komarek is
suggesting that Bigelow's goal is nothing less than an 'alien
reengineering project.' "
Dr. Davis currently works at the firm Earth Tech for physicist
and owner, Dr. Harold Puthoff; a man who is also listed on the
Skinwalker Ranch bio page for having contributed to that project
as well. Dr. Puthoff apparently became connected with the ranch
project in 1996, when he posted a mission statement in support
of Mr. Bigelow's NIDS initiative.
According to the Skinwalker Ranch website, Dr. Puthoff
"...served with the NSA during his tour with the navy... and
would later stay on as a civilian." Information that is not
available on the man's Wikipedia bio page. His main project of
public notoriety was government-sponsored research into PSI
phenomena back in the 1970s and 1980s. It was conducted at then
Stanford University associated Stanford Research Institute,
where he ran the Remote Viewing program from 1972 through to
1985.
Dr. Puthoff's controversial SRI project was funded to see if
psychic phenomena could be used for clandestine purposes. That
work led to a classified government project called STAR GATE, a
CIA and then DIA (Defense Intelligence Agency) funded program
intended to obtain intelligence information. It was then a Cold
War response to Soviet interest in psychic phenomena and was
formally terminated in 1995.
Professional skeptics, in responding to a statistical analysis
of PSI research findings, have challenged the research in
general:
"Because even if [they] are correct and we were to find that we
could reproduce the findings under specified conditions, this
would still be a far cry from concluding that psychic
functioning has been demonstrated. This is because the current
claim is based entirely upon a negative outcome..."
Dr. Puthoff responded to the standard scientific view of
skepticism for such phenomena in the book Mind Reach, co-written
with SRI colleague Dr. Russel Targ. Noting that they had once
attempted to submit a paper and received a response by one
journal editor, "This is the kind of thing that I would not
believe in even if it existed." (P. 169, Hampton Roads
Publishing ed.)
In 1985, after Puthoff ended his relationship with the PSI
program, he shifted direction to a new line of work. From the
early 1990s, he began publishing papers on polarizable vacuum
and Stochastic Electrodynamics, authoring or coauthoring such
works as "Inertia as a Zero-Point Field Lorentz Force," as well
as, "Polarizable-Vacuum Approach to General Relativity," and,
"Polarizable Vacuum 'Metric Engineering' Approach to GR
Effects." This material is considered by many physicists in the
advanced propulsion community to be highly relevant to their
ideas.
Skeptics have a negative opinion on that work as well,
contemptuously referring to Dr. Puthoff's ideas as 'fringe
physics'. A Skeptical Inquirer article by Martin Gardner spoke
to Dr. Puthoff's polarizable vacuum and zero-point ideas in this
impolite manner:
"The nation's number two drumbeater for [Zero-Point-Energy] is
none other than Harold Puthoff, who runs a think tank in Austin,
Texas, where efforts to tap ZPE have been underway for years. In
December 1997, to its shame, Scientific American ran an article
praising Puthoff for his efforts."
But it's not just Dr. Davis who has a connection with UFO
researchers. Dr. Marc Millis met with UFO proponents and venture
capitalists in 1999, while he was still on payroll at NASA. This
led to an internal NASA investigation into the matter.
According to a 1999 report published in the San Francisco
Chronicle, the NASA Office of the Inspector General had been
conducting an investigation into a planned meeting between NASA
Ames Research Center staff and Silicon Valley venture
capitalists. They had planned to meet at an International Space
Sciences Organization (ISSO) event to discuss potential advanced
propulsion technologies. The founder of that organization, Joe
Firmage, was at the time and remains today, convinced that
extraterrestrial spacecraft exist and further that he had met an
alien.
In that article, it was reported that NASA's concern was that
proprietary information owned by the government agency might be
leaked to private sources. Dr Sarfatti argued that the
investigation had been dropped with no findings of wrongdoing.
"[It] was nonsense, " Sarfatti said. "[B]ureaucratic
incompetence at NASA and it came to nothing. Too many Keystone
Kop NASA security people with too little to do I suppose."
Dr. Sarfatti said that the meeting had taken place "...at the
Free Mason Hall in San Francisco on Van Ness Ave." He didn't
recall if Dr. Davis had been in attendance, but a long list of
other UFOlogy luminaries and then head of NASA's BPP was. "Marc
Millis, John Alexander, John Peterson were there," he said,
among several others.
In an email, Dr. Marc Millis confirmed that he had attended that
event at the "invitation of sponsors." Dr. Millis also agreed
with Sarfatti that the investigation had been dropped with no
findings of wrongdoing and that the event was entirely above
board.
When I asked Dr. Millis why, while still holding an official
role at NASA, he had attended a meeting with luminaries of
UFOlogy and a venture capitalist who all openly believe in UFO
and alien visitations, he declined to comment.
Regarding the other attendees Dr. Sarfatti listed, Col. John
Alexander wrote, UFOs: Myths, Conspiracies, and Realities, and
is often remembered as the man who George Clooney portrayed in
the film The Men Who Stare At Goats. John Peterson is a Futurist
and founder of the Arlington Institute, and is known for having
contacted the Director of Central Intelligence James Woosley in
1993 in order to obtain information on UFOs.
Dr. Sarfatti is a former assistant professor of physics at San
Diego State University. He's held research fellowship positions
at Birkbeck College in London, where he worked with renowned
physicist David Bohm; the Cornell Space Science Center; Atomic
Energy Research Establishment in Great Britain; and the Max
Planck Institute in Germany. He is noted for being part of a
semi-underground counter-culture physics society called the,
"Fundamental Fysiks Group". MIT physicist and historian David
Kaiser detailed that story in his recent book, How the Hippies
Saved Physics.
Dr. Davis obtained a PhD in Astrophysics in 1991 from the
University of Arizona. He co-founded the NASA-JSC's (Johnson
Space Center) Advanced Deep Space Transport Technology
Assessment Group. He is also the author of numerous speculative
peer-reviewed papers on wormholes, warp drive, quantum
teleportation, and other advanced propulsion studies. And, as
referred to earlier, he co-edited a book on the research
findings from NASA's Breakthrough Propulsion Physics Project
before funding for ongoing work was cancelled in 2002. Dr. Davis
is listed on the web page of Millis' successor organization, the
Tau Zero Foundation, as among those of the Tau Zero Network. In
addition, Dr. Millis confirmed that Davis had "volunteered some
consulting" for the NASA effort, and that both had edited the
book, Frontiers of Propulsion Science, together. He is currently
scheduled to speak on advanced propulsion at the 2013 Mutual UFO
Network Symposium.
Regarding general research into warp drive and gravity
manipulation, a recent io9 article quoted NASA physicist Harold
White as saying that a bench lab test is in progress. In
addition, Bigelow Aerospace and NASA have announced a
partnership where the firm:
"...will work with a variety of commercial space companies to
assess and develop options for innovative and dynamic private
and public investments to create infrastructure to support
domestic and international government exploration activities
alongside revenue generating private sector enterprises."
It should be noted that Dr. Davis' words and Mr. Bigelow's
interest in UFOs are entirely at odds with the longstanding
official NASA position that "...there is no evidence for visits
of intelligent aliens to Earth, either now or in the past."
Neither Drs. Davis nor Puthoff responded to requests for
comment.
