Thompson Creek posts $19,7m Q3 profit
By: Liezel Hill
6th November 2009
TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – Molybdenum miner Thompson Creek Metals earned $19,7-million in the third quarter, a decrease from earnings of $100,6-million a year earlier, but an improvement on the second quarter, when the company posted a net loss.
The company benefited from higher realised prices for molybdenum, which is used to strengthen steel, as well as increased sales volumes compared with the second quarter of this year.
However, prices remained well short of the highs experienced a year ago – Thompson Creek realised an average price of $12,75/lb in the third quarter, compared with $32,85/lb in the same period of 2008.
Revenue declined 65%, to $114,4-million, from $331,1-million last year.
The company produced 6,2-million pounds of molybdenum, compared with 6,5-million pounds a year ago.
Cash costs were lower, at $5,67/lb, from$7,33/lb in the third quarter of 2008.
The firm also announced it plans to ramp up operations at its Thompson Creek mill, in Idaho, to full capacity from January 2010, in response to the improved outlook for molybdenum market fundamentals.
The mill is currently running at 78% of full capacity, after operations were curtailed earlier this year as a response to sharply lower molybdenum prices.
Thompson Creek said it now expects to produce between 24-million and 26-million pounds this year, compared with a previous range of 22-million to 26-million.
In 2010, output is forecast at between 29-million and 32-million pounds, reflecting the decision to increase operations at the Thompson Creek mill.
Thompson Creek also produces molybdenum from the Endako mine, in British Columbia, Canada.

Thompson Creek profit dives on weak moly price
Thu Nov 5, 2009 5:43pm EST
TORONTO, Nov 5 (Reuters) - Molybdenum miner Thompson Creek Metals (TCM.TO) said on Thursday its third-quarter profit fell 80 percent due to a sharp drop in the prices of the steel-hardening agent.
The company earned $19.7 million, or 14 cents a share, in the quarter ended Sept. 30. That compared with a profit of $100.6 million, or 74 cents a share, in the year-before quarter.
Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S had expected, on average, a profit of 14 cents a share.
Revenue dropped to $114.4 million from $331.1 million, as realized moly prices plunged to $12.75 a pound from $32.85 a pound due to weaker global steel demand.
Production of the metal from the company's two mines eased to 6.2 million pounds from 6.5 million pounds. Cash costs per pound declined to $5.67 from $7.33.
In a statement, the company said that it plans to operate the mill at its Thompson Creek mine in Idaho at full capacity starting in January 2010 due to an improved outlook for molybdenum market fundamentals. The company cut production at the mill in February due to plunging metals prices.
This should allow the company to produce between 29 million and 32 million pounds of the metal in 2010, up from its expected output of 24 million to 26 million pounds this year. (Reporting by Cameron French; editing by Peter Galloway)

Great news today! Four times more profit on stronger molybdenum sales is an impressing result, it makes me confident for the future.
UPDATE 1-Thompson Creek quadruples profit, delays project
Profit surges to 74 cents a share * Molybdenum sales rise to $325.9 million * Sees 2008 output of 25 million-26 million pounds (In U.S. dollars, unless noted)
TORONTO, Nov 6 (Reuters) - Thompson Creek Metals (TCM.TO: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) said on Thursday its third-quarter profit more than quadrupled from the year before on stronger molybdenum sales.
However, the Toronto-based company said it would postpone development of its Davidson project in northern British Columbia until economic conditions improve.
Thompson Creek, the world's No. 5 producer of the steel-hardening agent, earned $100.6 million, or 74 cents a share, in the three-months ended Sept 30. That was up from $24 million, or 18 cents a share, a year earlier.
Molybdenum sales jumped to $325.9 million from $195.9 million as the company mined higher grades.
Realized molybdenum prices were $32.85 a pound during the quarter, but will be much lower in the fourth quarter, the company warned. Spot prices were at $21 on Thursday.
Thompson Creek, which produces from its Thompson Creek mine in Idaho and its Endako mine in British Columbia, also raised its production guidance for 2008.
It now sees output of between 25 million and 26 million pounds, up from its previous estimates of 23 million to 24.5 million pounds. In 2009, production is expected at 31.5 million to 34 million pounds.
Thompson Creek's shares, which are down more than 65 percent this year, fell 88 Canadian cents, or 14.3 percent, to C$5.28 on the Toronto Stock Exchange on Thursday, touching a two-year low.

I read about TC in the July issue of Kiplingers and thought it was interesting then I did a search on the internet and found this will do more DD later but this looks like a good play so far.
http://www.streetinsider.com/New+Coverage/Deutsche+Bank+Initiates+Thompson+Creek+(TC)+with+a+Buy/3763256.html
June 23, 2008 8:21 AM EDT
Deutsche Bank initiates coverage on Thompson Creek (NYSE: TC) with a Buy rating and a $32 price target.
The firm said, "Thompson Creek Metals Company, a primary molybdenum miner, is one of the largest listed pure play companies in the industry. We are positive on the medium-term outlook for molybdenum based on robust steel industry demand and uncertain supply-side dynamics. The positive outlook for moly demand is underpinned by expectations of strong global steel production and shifting industry cost structure. Despite large project announcements, permitting, financing, grades issues, and surging costs imply execution uncertainty and the moly industry could have difficulty keeping pace with demand — we foresee an extension of high moly prices into 2010."
Deutsche believes that a production ramp up and a shift in sales mix toward greater in-house produced moly to drive Thompson Creek’s 2008-10 earnings growth. Also, Thompson Creek exhibits a high ~2:1 EPADR sensitivity to changes in moly assumptions, which could drive long-term earnings power.
Thompson Creek Metals Company acquires, explores, develops, and of molybdenum properties in Canada and the United States.
I've been told though that this may be a 'blow out market' and it could be time to sit on cash
That is the money manager's opinion (and mine too)

Looks good to go long at 15.30 for a quick trade
Still going up :)
Hope so!
Hi Frenchee
I have a pretty good money manager that has been buying this stock up on weakness
I have a feeling more analysts are going to be hopping on board soon and see the price at least double from here.
I think this is a safe trade on weakness and will rally hard once the markets in general start trending up again
