Blind Golfer Gets Hole-In-One
Updated:15:02, Friday February 01, 2008
A blind 92-year-old man has stunned his golfing friends by scoring a hole-in-one in Florida.
Leo Fiyalko sunk his 110-yard, five-iron shot on the fifth hole at Cove Cay Country Club.
He has been playing for 60 years, but this was his first hole-in-one.
"I was just trying to put the ball on the green," Mr Fiyalko said
He used to have a seven handicap, but now he needs help lining up shots and finding his golf balls.
Jean Gehring watched as his friend's ball disappeared up the fairway and into the hole.
"I could tell it went on the green, but when we got up there I didn't see it.
"I looked in the hole and there it was," Mr Gehring said.
Mr Fiyalko's friends at the country club presented him with a plaque to commemorate his feat.
Global Carrot 'Panic Buying' Planned
Julia Reid
Updated:14:11, Monday January 28, 2008
More than 91,000 Facebook users have signed up to a Facebook group called "On May 15, 2008, everybody needs to go out and panic buy carrots". http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=9801981146
They plan to go out at 2pm on the designated day and buy as many carrots as they can.
However, the idea has also caught the attention of critics, who say it is irresponsible to deprive shoppers of the "orangey goodness of everyone's favourite vegetable".
The opposing Facebook group "Don't add to world hunger, don't panic-buy carrots" has attracted just 29 members.
Student Freya Valentine, who created the original site, insists it is all just a bit of fun.
"We know we're not going to cause a massive world-wide shortage," she said.
"To the carroty people who are saying this could never happen - maybe you should be thankful for the imminent rise we are probably going to make it your profits on May 15."
David Martin, vice-chairman of the British Carrot Growers' Association, is excited by the idea.
"It's an extraordinary proposition," he said.
"Purchasers can be assured they'll have a fine product in the middle of May - as long as they buy British carrots. Bring it on! Let's try and reach a million members!"
There is much debate on the site as to what to do with the spare carrots on the following day. But another Facebook group has sprung up to provide answers.
It proposes a day of "taproot-based generosity and carroty philanthropy" on May 16.
The 986 members plan to turn panic-bought carrots into soups and other carrot-related dishes, and deliver their produce to the needy and homeless.
The main site has a link to buy a carrot T-shirt and to carrot-related sites, and has off-shoot blogs and discussion pages across the web.
One particular enthusiast writes: "A carrot crisis on May 16! Far more interesting than Northern Rock etc. Bugs Bunny, eat your heart out!"
Cat Leads Police To Child Porn Stash
Updated:04:15, Saturday January 26, 2008
They say curiosity killed the cat - but one Texan moggy's exploration of its new home helped uncover a huge stash of child porn.
The cat was snooping around its new flat in Austin, Texas, when it came across a gap in the wall.
The woman who owns the feline remarked on it to a friend, who put his hand into the gap and found a number of DVDs apparently hidden by the apartment's previous owner.
She took the discs to the police who discovered they contained child porn.
Officers tracked them to Luis Jimenez, who had moved out of the apartment some time earlier.
They say he probably forgot about the discs when he moved house.
The 24-year-old has now been charged with possession of child pornography, according to Fox News.
He could now face up to 10 years in jail and a fine of up to $10,000 (about £5,000).
:( That sucks... at least she's getting help.
Cat With Five Legs Lined Up For Op
Updated:16:35, Sunday January 27, 2008
Cats are known for having nine lives but a special feline in Pennsylvania has five legs - at least for the time being.
The moggy, named Babygirl, will undergo surgery to remove the extra leg and another crippled leg, although the operation has not yet been scheduled.
The surgery will leave the cat with three legs.
This will improve her quality of life, according to the Washington Area Humane Society in western Pennsylvania, where the cat will live until a home can be found for her.
Chrystin Rice, a kennel associate, said a woman brought Babygirl to the shelter on January 19.
The woman had first seen the stray animal as a kitten about a year ago in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, south of Pittsburgh.
Despite needing surgery, Babygirl appears to be in good health, Ms Rice said.
"It's actually a really, really nice cat," she said.
Ms Rice said some people had expressed interest in the cat, but no one had yet applied to adopt her.
"We've had a few calls come in, but everyone's just kind of asking how's she doing, when's the surgery," she said.
That's brutal... Lucky guy too...
Yeah... I thought I'd start posting strange news on the board :)
Men Cut Shark Head Off To Save Friend
Updated:05:56, Monday January 28, 2008
Fishermen had to cut the head off a shark after it bit one of their colleagues and refused to let go.
The victim had just caught the 10ft mako shark and it was hauled onto their boat.
Things went wrong when the 20-year-old Australian stepped on its tail and the fish then bit his leg.
The creature held on tightly for several minutes and the other men were forced to slice off its head to release its jaws.
The deckhand, who had been fishing for tuna, was airlifted to hospital on the Gold Coast.
He suffered a bite to the bone of his leg and his condition was described as stable before he underwent surgery.
A paramedic said the victim was lucky to be alive because the bite narrowly missed major arteries.
Brian Russell, a spokesman for the rescue service, said: "He was fishing with a reel off a boat and caught a mako shark.
"The shark was three metres in length and 90 kgs in weight. They brought it on deck and the man stepped on its tail.
"The shark whipped around and latched onto his right calf.
"They couldn't release the shark's jaw, so they had to cut off its head to release the jaws."
Once, a long time ago, a song was whistled by a tree
as I watched its leaves,
it whist'd a lovely tune for me.
The whistling formed the clouds
in the pale blue sky,
the tree whisted a song that could be seen with my naked eye.
The whistling grew fainter,
just as the future appear fuzzy and dim,
and the tree suddenly spoke aloud:
"What do you see my friend?"
And all I could do is sit stunned, stunned by the wind. I could not answer the tree despite what it has given me.
Upon the years which follow, I attend the tree
yearning to hear it at dusk and dawn,
but alas each day passes,
as I grow deaf,
as I grow old,
and yet I long,
for one last song.
Have a good day everyone.
*shakes his head*
