PFW Analysis: Pats do it again By Paul Perillo, Patriots Football Weekly
Bill Belichick and the Patriots once again did some moving at draft time and once again it appears they made the moves work to their advantage. Belichick worked a deal with Green Bay to move up in the second round and scooped up wide receiver Chad Jackson, who many believed was a first-round talent. Along with Laurence Maroney and David Thomas, Jackson gives the Patriots offense some much-needed speed and athleticsm, which in turn made Day 1 a very positive one for New England.

For as much as Patriots watchers like to claim Bill Belichick is unpredictable when it comes to his draft day intentions, he’s actually becoming easier and easier to read. We may not know exactly where and when, but we can pretty much know for sure every year that a trade will be in the offing. And more often than not, that trade will be a good one for New England.
Belichick and his personnel man Scott Pioli made like Monty Hall once again in 2006, trading second-round picks with Green Bay while giving the Packers the first of their two third-rounders. The move paid immediate dividends when the Patriots were able to pick up Florida wide receiver Chad Jackson, a player that many draft experts had slated as a first-round talent.
Couple that deal with a terrific first-round pick in Minnesota running back Laurence Maroney and the Patriots came away with a terrific start to their 2006 draft. They added Texas tight end David Thomas in the third round (86th overall).
Thomas was clearly a value pick with tight end not being a huge need. But Belichick often says that in order to run a two-tight end offense you need at least three serviceable tight ends. With Christian Fauria lost to free agency, the Patriots needed a third to join Benjamin Watson and Daniel Graham. And with the depth at wide receiver lacking, even with the addition of Jackson, tight ends could be a big part of the offense in 2006.
Another factor to consider is the pending free agency of Graham, who will be unrestricted after the season. If Thomas, who was very productive with the Longhorns, pans out he could give the Patriots leverage in their potential negotiations with Graham.
Time will tell if the Jackson trade works out, but history is on the Patriots side. Their constant maneuvering has netted multiple picks in different years and the team’s history with those picks is obviously pretty solid. Matt Light, Vince Wilfork, Eugene Wilson, Asante Samuel, Dan Koppen, Ty Warren, Graham and Ellis Hobbs were taken with choices that were acquired via draft-related trades. Obviously not every move has worked out, but that’s a pretty good corps of talent to build around.
Jackson was the second marquee pick of the day for the Patriots. Maroney and Jackson allowed Belichick to add a great deal of explosiveness to the offense. Some people were surprised to see the Pats focus on that side of the ball, but Tom Brady had to be extremely relieved.
By the end of the 2006 season, Corey Dillon and the Patriots running game had been reduced to rubble. Denver’s Pro Bowl safety John Lynch indicated after the Broncos playoff win that their game plan was simply to blitz Brady and forced the Patriots franchise to win the game by himself because Denver simply had no respect for New England’s ground game.
Whether the reasons for Dillon’s ineffectiveness were injury related or due to the banged up offensive line he was running behind, Belichick obviously felt finding a successor was important. With Maroney, the best-case scenario would have him backing up a rejuvenated Dillon, getting 10 carries a game while keeping the veteran fresh. Worst-case would see him supplanting a still struggling Dillon and quickly becoming the back of the future. Unless Maroney doesn’t pan out at all, either scenario would be acceptable.
“He’s been a very productive player,” Belichick said shortly after taking Maroney. “I think he brings an element of speed and certainly youth to the position. I like the production that we’ve had from Kevin [Faulk], Patrick [Pass] and Corey, but in terms of experience they are all up there. We feel like it’s good to have a young player to work with, but more importantly Laurence was the best value on the board at that point.”
So the Patriots got their back of the future, and perhaps even the present, and added even more speed and athleticism with Jackson. The former Gator ran a blistering 4.32 40 at the Combine, which was among the fastest times recorded in Indy.
Plus, he’s not one of those speed receivers who’s limited exclusively to the home-run ball. Jackson has shown the willingness to go over the middle and make the tough catch in traffic. In other words, he’s a Patriots-type receiver and should augment a crop of wideouts that was badly in need of bolstering.
Jackson explained in his conference call that the Patriots coaching staff gave him a page of the playbook during a pre-draft visit down to Gainesville, and then quizzed him on it when Jackson made a trip to Foxborough weeks later. Evidently he passed the test.
And once again at draft time, it looks like the Patriots brain trust did as well.

McGinest statement
Former Patriots linebacker Willie McGinest released the following statement through his agent on Friday:
"I would like to thank the New England fans, players, media and organization for all of their support during my time with the Patriots. The last 12 years of my life have been nothing short of spectacular, and there will always be a special place in my heart for the Patriots. That being said, I am extremely excited about starting a new chapter of my life in Cleveland. To all of you in the New England area who have laughed, cried and celebrated with me and the Patriots over the past 12 years, thank you. I will always cherish those memories, and I will miss you."
The statement was signed by McGinest, with his No. 55 next to the signature.
NFL owners approve six-year CBA extensionESPN.com news services
GRAPEVINE, Texas -- Labor peace was restored to the NFL when the owners agreed to the players' union proposal Wednesday, extending the collective bargaining agreement for six years.
There were no further details on the agreement, including whether it includes expanded revenue sharing.
The vote was 30-2, with Buffalo and Cincinnati, two low-revenue teams, voting against it.
"On behalf of the players, the NFLPA staff and the negotiating team, we are pleased that this process has finally concluded with an agreement," Gene Upshaw, executive director of the NFL Players' Association, said in a statement. "This agreement is not about one side winning or losing. Ultimately, it is about what is best for the players, the owners and the fans of the National Football League.
"Moving forward, this new agreement gives us the opportunity to continue our unprecedented success and growth."
Free agency, put off twice by the protracted negotiations between the owners and players, now will start at 12:01 a.m. Friday.
"It was a good compromise," said Jim Irsay, owner of low-revenue Indianapolis. "We're happy with it -- 30-2 is a good vote."
The agreement concludes weeks of contentious negotiations between the league and the NFL Players' Association. The new extension will add nearly $8 million to the 2006 salary cap, pushing it to $102 million, Mortensen reports. Without a CBA extension, the 2006 cap would have been $94.5 million. The 2007 cap will be $109 million, according to Mortensen.
"The union is delighted," NFLPA attorney Jeffrey Kessler said. "The new CBA is a big leap forward for the players and means a fairer system for all. It also means seven more years of labor peace. Fans can now forget about the lawyers and owners and enjoy football."
Earlier Wednesday, the NFL moved back the waiver deadline for teams to get below the salary cap from 9 p.m. ET Wednesday to 11 p.m. ET.
Had the owners been unable to reach an agreement, it would have put a number of veterans on the street and would have limited the amount of money available for teams to spend in free agency. By reaching a compromise, the league managed to avoid an uncapped year in 2007, which would have allowed some teams to spend almost at will and keep others from spending at all.
Some veterans have already been let go, such as Brentson Buckner, a 13-year veteran who was cut by the Carolina Panthers last week to clear about $1.5 million of cap space.
"It was eventually going to happen, they had to get it done," he said. "But it's good because now it gives guys who put in the time to become a big-time free agent, the guys like Edgerrin James, the chance to go out and get what they've earned."
The crux of the debate over the last few days has centered on revenue sharing and the disparity between high- and low-income teams. Low-income teams such as Buffalo, Cincinnati and Indianapolis say that high-revenue teams -- Dallas, Washington and Philadelphia, for instance -- should contribute proportionately to the player pool because they can earn far more in non-football income such as advertising and local radio rights.
Those high-revenue teams might contribute only 10 percent of their outside money compared with 50 percent or more for low-revenue teams.
"Some teams are contributing a little more than others," Redskins owner Dan Synder said. "This is really a win-win."
Upshaw has insisted throughout more than a year of negotiations that the division between owners must be resolved before agreement could be reached on a contract extension.

Good Evening from Cowboyzzzz Country!
Here's to Next year, it's Pats & 'Boys
On day after, NFL sets sights on XLI
After taking this year's big game off, Bill Belichick will win his fourth Super Bowl next season — over Bill Parcells (below).
DETROIT - The NFL becomes a 32-team league again this morning. T.O.'s ego and Brett Favre's future and Chad Pennington's shoulder and the most star-driven draft in two decades with headliners Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart and Vince Young shove Joey Porter's mouth all the way back to Pittsburgh.
The maneuvering for the Super Bowl in Miami next Feb. 4 begins right now, and the Daily News takes its annual day-after-the-Super Bowl journey into the future. So, here are a few predictions on the way to South Beach:
It will be the Patriots vs. the Cowboys in Super Bowl XLI, Bill Belichick versus Bill Parcells, Tom Brady versus Drew Bledsoe. Parcells and Belichick matching up in the Super Bowl would give the definitive answer to the ultimate question: Who is the better coach? Parcells made it to three Super Bowls, winning two, all with Belichick on his staff, but has never made it without him. Belichick is 3-0 in Super Bowls without Parcells. It would be a dream matchup. They're even talking to each other again after the nasty divorce with the Jets.
I've picked the Colts in the AFC the last two years. That window has closed. The Chargers and Bengals would have been serious considerations, but Drew Brees is coming off a torn labrum in the final game of the season and Carson Palmer tore up his knee in the playoffs. Edgerrin James doesn't think the Colts want him back. He would be the perfect signing for the Patriots.
Parcells developed a pattern in his first two jobs. He won the Super Bowl in his fourth year with the Giants and again four years later. In his fourth year with the Patriots, he went to the Super Bowl. Sadly for the Jets, he quit before his fourth year with them.
But now he's entering Year 4 in Dallas and the 'Boys are ready for a serious Super Bowl run. If Parcells can prevent Drew Bledsoe, entering his 14th year, from making rookie mistakes, he will be the first coach to take three teams to the Super Bowl. The Eagles are not bouncing back so fast, especially with Donovan McNabb still so consumed by all the T.O. issues. Joe Gibbs has put together the most expensive staff in NFL history, but should have spent the money on a quarterback. The Bears don't score enough, the Bucs and Panthers are incomplete teams and the Seahawks may even have to face a division winner in the playoffs next year.
Final Score: Pats 30, 'Boys 20
