WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A recently revealed nuclear facility in Iran will be the centerpiece of talks that began in Switzerland Thursday among representatives of the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council, Germany and Iran's nuclear chief.

"These will not be easy talks," warned one senior U.S. administration official.

The first task in Geneva will be to test whether Iran is ready to engage on the nuclear issue. The question will be: "What steps are they willing to take to build confidence with the international community," said one official.

Confronting Goliaths

1 Samuel 17:1-53

David's short battle with Goliath was more than a fight between Israel and the Philistines. It was a defense of Jehovah's name against those who doubted His supremacy. As David pointed out, the only way a boy with a sling could defeat a giant warrior like Goliath was by the Lord's hand. And that's exactly what happened.

In confronting Goliath, David showed real courage and faith. But we see that what drove him to face the giant was righteous indignation: "For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should taunt the armies of the living God?" (1 Sam. 17:26).David believed that someone had to wipe away from Israel the reproach caused by Goliath's insults. Since no one else would step forward, he volunteered to defend Yahweh's name.

Modern audiences often read this story merely as a battle scene wherein an inexperienced underdog toppled an ancient superhero. We comfort ourselves that we will probably never have to deal with such a scenario. But the real story is that David stood up for God. Given how our culture scoffs at both the Father and Jesus Christ, believers will certainly spend some time in David's sandals. The question is whether we will turn and run or stand and fight in God's name.

You don't need a theology degree to combat those who would mock God. Your "smooth stones" (v. 40) are the truths you have pulled from the Bible. No enemy can win an argument against Scripture. Whatever the outcome seems to be, the battle is the Lord's, and He gives victory to the faithful.

Sept. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Iran test-fired its Shahab-3 missile, which puts Israel within reach, amid a threat that international talks this week on its nuclear program will lead to further sanctions.

The successful launch early today of the Shahab-3, which the military said has a range of 2,000 kilometers (1,240 miles), came on the second day of war games led by the Revolutionary Guards, according to state-run Press TV, which showed the test- firing. The government also announced the testing of shorter- range missiles yesterday.

The Foreign Ministry denied any link between the missile tests and the Oct. 1 nuclear talks in Geneva involving an Iranian delegation and representatives of the five permanent members of the United Nations plus Germany. Iran has refused UN demands to suspend uranium enrichment, which the U.S. and some of its allies allege is aimed at developing weapons.

The U.S., U.K. and France last week said Iran secretly built a second plant for enriching uranium in violation of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Iran’s construction of the underground facility may prompt additional economic sanctions, including restrictions on banking and on oil and gas technology, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates told CNN yesterday.

Iran also tested its two-stage Sejil missile, the state-run Fars news agency said today without saying what type of Sejil it was or giving details of its range. The Guards also said they tested a multiple-missile launching system and several short- and medium-range missiles.

The Shahab-1 and Shahab-2 missiles, which can travel 300 to 700 kilometers, were launched late yesterday, General Hossein Salami, head of the air force, told Press TV. The Shahabs are based on the Soviet-designed Scud, itself derived from Germany’s World War II V2.

Missile’s Range

The Federation of American Scientists says the Shahab-3 only has a range of 1,290 kilometers, though the Shahab-4 is capable of the longer range of 2,000 kilometers. In May, Iran launched a Sejil-2 missile, which it said has a range of 2,000 kilometers.

The latest maneuvers are a routine operation to assess the country’s military ability, the government in Tehran said.

The exercise, called Prophet IV, is aimed at “practicing management of long-term preventive and defensive operations,” Salami said on the Guards’ Web site. The maneuvers coincide with the start of Iran’s “Sacred Defense” week, marking the eight- year war with neighboring Iraq that ended in 1988.

Iranian officials are set to meet in Geneva with representatives of the U.S., Russia, China, France, the U.K., which are the permanent UN Security Council members, and Germany.

The “opportunity is ripe for talks to be constructive,” Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Hassan Qashqavi, said today in comments aired live from Tehran on state television.

‘Meaningful Dialogue’

President Barack Obama said on Sept. 26 he remains open to “a serious, meaningful dialogue” with Iran.

The UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency said that Iran confirmed the development of a second uranium enrichment facility in a Sept. 21 letter.

Uranium enrichment is at the center of Western concerns about Iran’s nuclear program. The process isolates a uranium isotope needed to generate fuel for a nuclear power reactor; in higher concentrations it can be used to make a bomb. Iran denies it is developing a nuclear weapon and insists the enrichment is needed for civilian uses, such as the production of electricity.

Iranian officials rejected criticism for failing to mention the new enrichment plant’s existence previously, arguing that it’s only required to inform the IAEA 180 days before introducing nuclear material into the plant. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said the facility is “18 months away from operation.”

The Lord calls us to share His truth with others, but oftentimes our actions and attitude completely contradict the words that are coming out of our mouths. This is an area in which we all seem to struggle from time to time.

Every day, every one of us communicates something to someone. We send messages by what we say and by what we don't say, by
what we do and by what we don't do. For example, if a father quietly decides to stop tithing his income, he is sending a loud message to his children. Without ever opening his mouth, he is declaring, "Kids, you can't trust the Lord with your money. God isn't faithful to meet your needs, so you better hold on to as much as you possibly can." Is that the message you want to pass on to your children?

You might argue, "Well, I'm not really a tither, but I would never tell my kids that you can't trust God." Yet you have already sent an unspoken message loud and clear. What people--especially children--witness in our behavior speaks much louder than what we actually say with our mouths.

The apostle Paul understood what powerful lessons we teach by our actions. For this reason, he made sure he modeled the right behavior and values for his spiritual children to emulate (2 Thess. 3:7-9).

It is not an issue of whether or not we will communicate a message. Rather, the issue is, What kind of message are you already communicating? Search yourself for any disparity between what you say and what you do, and choose to share a complete, unified message of hope with the world.

Lord Jesus, I trusted in YOU as you never fail us even though we fail because of our weakness and we stumble because of our flesh desires. Thank you, Jesus, in faith, that You are The Lord who is the Master of Universe and who gives us the peace surpasses all understanding and troubles.

Lord, Jesus, You have guided and protected us so that Your Glory is being lifted. We confess that You are the Lord God who protect and guide us -- our Nation. Through the 912 unite gathering, Your glory is manifested. You are Almighty God, nothing is impossible in Your mighty hand.

God Almighty, many are honestly seeking your guidance to lead our nation to be the light which is shining to all. Have Your Mercy on many who are hungry and tired for we are weak and have fallen into the hands of devils' scheme. But You are in control and bring all to achieve Your purpose. Thank you, Jesus - show Your grace and mercy for many are starving physically, mentally, financially, and spiritually.

Genesis 19:14

(14) So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who had married his daughters, and said, "Get up, get out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city!" But to his sons-in-law he seemed to be joking.


In Lot's family was a measure of contempt. Lot seemed to his sons-in-law to be joking. It is as if they said, “Who cares for anything you say?” Was Lot’s wife different? She looked back. Lot’s daughters? They escaped, and then proceeded to involve Lot in one of the vilest sins in the entire Bible, incest. Contempt is not unusual for a lingerer, for they are despised by their families, who cannot deal with the person’s inconsistency. They are hot, then cold. They blow this way, then that. They command, “Do this,” but they do something different. Their lives do not live up to the words that they say. Lot was a man whose works burned, but he himself was saved (I Corinthians 3:15).

This is not a way that God wants His children to live. Even though He mercifully intervenes and saves, He wants His children to enjoy the best of the abundant life and to be prepared for His Kingdom.

Most are familiar with Herbert Lockyer’s series of "All" books: All the Prayers of the Bible, All the Parables of the Bible, All the Women of the Bible, All the Men of the Bible. In All the Men of the Bible, he says that Lot is the representative man:

Perhaps there is no figure in the Bible who represents so many men of today as Lot of Sodom. Where you will find one Abraham, one Daniel, or one Joshua, you will find a thousand Lots.

Lot had much wealth, but he did not have the abundant life of God because of his choice to coexist with the world, whose constant degenerate pressure virtually destroyed his true spirituality. Lot was not a sinner in the normal sense, but a spiritually small and lean man.

There is an interesting contrast between Abraham and Lot. Abraham was probably exceedingly wealthier than Lot. But Abraham lived in a tent, while Lot lived in a house. This clearly shows that Abraham lived his life in such a way that everybody understood that Abraham was just a pilgrim. He did not put roots down in this world, while Lot, his nephew, did.

Lot was converted, but carnal. He was a man of weak faith. His hopes and dreams were in the world, and his interest was in the things of this world. Lot had the same vision as Abraham, but by choice, he was firmly anchored in the world. All of Lot's goodness was virtually wasted because his spiritual life was going nowhere.

One might say that, because Lot was "saved," there is more than one way to skin a cat. There might be many poor ways of skinning a cat, as well as some good ways, too. But there is only one best way to skin a cat. Why not choose the best way of doing it? That is the lesson of Lot's life. Why let our works that we have built burn up? Instead, why not do things the way God says?

God was not in all of Lot’s thoughts (Psalm 10:4) because he was living by sight. Lot might very well be what we might call the quintessential second-generation Christian. He believed, but all of his passion was spent pursuing the amusements of this world. Lot, whose faith was weak at best, was not committed like Abraham was. The whole aim of Abraham's life was to give glory to God, while Lot, though righteous, lived by sight. His aim was essentially to grasp at life, to do it now and enjoy it, rather than work to develop his relationship with God.
