Beyond Second Life
Companies thinking twice about the popular virtual world are finding more security and flexibility in alternatives
Slide Show >>
Is there life beyond Second Life? Companies ranging from Walt Disney (DIS ) to Wells Fargo (WFC) are seeking alternative virtual worlds with both greater security against hackers and control over such things as brand messaging and participants. After all, the Web-based parallel universe is a messy marketplace where you're as likely to see a bare-chested, rabbit-headed avatar trolling for adult-themed entertainment or vandalizing a digital store as a corporate suit leading a training session. And some companies want to target age groups younger or older than the average 30-year-old denizen of Second Life.
Even the earliest adopters of Second Life are turning elsewhere. In September, 2005, Wells Fargo (WFC) was ahead of the corporate stampede into Second Life when it launched a 3D virtual environment, "Stagecoach Island," in Second Life to attract youthful, tech-savvy customers and teach them about banking. Now nearly 50 corporations use Second Life, with Royal Philips Electronics (PHG ), Coca-Cola, (KO ) and News Corp. (NWS ) among the latest. But Wells Fargo is gone. It pulled its Stagecoach Island out and opted to create its own world, a larger, stand-alone online universe that it can monitor more closely and customize.
Starwood Hotels & Resorts (HOT ) is getting ready to bail now, too. Last summer, Starwood made a splashy, widely publicized entrance into Second Life, hoping to draw on the wisdom of avatars to get customer feedback on possible real-world design features for its stylish new brand of hotels geared toward hip twenty- and thirtysomething business travelers on a budget. Although Starwood first heralded Second Life as an ongoing project, it will soon leave, too. Starwood discovered avatars don't need to sleep, and so a virtual hotel didn't make much sense in the long run. Unlike Adidas or General Motors (GM ), which sell digital versions of Reeboks and Pontiacs in the online world, Starwood didn't have goods to sell—and found itself unable to sustain avatars' interest.
Even newcomer Coke isn't banking solely on that particular patch of cyberspace as its main online platform. In May the company closed its "Virtual Thirst" contest, which asked the public to design a vending machine for Second Life. The winner gets 500,000 "Linden Dollars," the virtual world's currency. But Coke is also reaching out to potential vending-machine designers via a MySpace.com (NWS ) social-networking page, del.icio.us keyword tagging, a Flickr (YHOO ) photo page, and a YouTube (GOOG ) video clip. Coke's multichannel Web 2.0 onslaught shows the beverage giant is going anywhere on the Internet where the young can be found.
MTV Networks (VIA ) started in Second Life but decided to use Makena Technologies to create stand-alone online environments to accompany its Laguna Beach TV series, and more recently, The Hills and Pimp My Ride. The cybersites weave the shows' story lines into interactive digital environments without any competing brands.
Disney (DIS ) hired Finnish developer Sulake to create its own Virtual Magic Kingdom, a cartoony, interactive world that replicates Disney's amusement parks online. Sulake is also the creator of Habbo Hotel, a seven-year-old Web-based world aimed at teenagers with 76 million individual avatars worldwide. Companies without any presence in Second Life, including Target (TGT ) and Wal-Mart Stores (WMT ), sponsor digital "lounges" and events at Habbo Hotel. More than 150 avatars can hang out simultaneously in these branded environments, nearly double the maximum at a Second Life shindig.
Linden Lab, the creator of Second Life, doesn't think that building a series of separate virtual worlds is a good strategy, director of marketing Catherine Smith says. The company, however, is working on allowing corporate players to increase security by hosting their own servers that could keep their back-end data separate from Linden Lab's main server. Last fall hackers obtained the credit-card details of many Second Lifers.
This growing crop of Second Life alternatives is diverse and highly specialized but shares a common focus on security, customization, and control—three qualities that are business-friendly. Although Second Life clearly isn't fading away any time soon, corporate interest is broadening. Analysts such as Joe Laszlo of JupiterResearch predict virtual worlds are poised to become the next hot Web acquisitions for big media companies.
:) Well invite anyone here that you want. The only thing is, it is a premium board for paying members only.... but we'll get the info out there somehow.
Matt told Bud that he could create his own stock pick board, he just can't pick ADCS! LOL!
that is great dd rkor :) keep it coming and just post it here. We need to get a hold of adcs and make sure that they pr all of the affiliation between second life/vstarr/adcs so that all of this in indisputably on topic.
i know this is "nothing much" but that board is ridiculous.thanks for havin me,and i will keep you informed as to whats up
the deletions are getting beyond ridiculous!!! i can't take it...
i just posted the below about new gear for second life that vstarr contestants will surely want, and from my conversations with the ceo it is the whole reason for walmart and the vstarr mall- to sell gear to help the contestants- walmart because they have the global reach that contestants anywhere in the world will be able to order and quickly receive the things they may need to help their contest performance. yet it was deleted as spam.

IBM to host private Second Life regions
Wed Apr 2, 2008 3:03pm PDT
By Adam Reuters
(Editor’s note: Due to a technical error, this story was posted in advance of an embargo set by Linden Lab and IBM.)
SECOND LIFE, April 2 (Reuters) - IBM said on Wednesday it will become the first company to host private regions of the Second Life Grid on its own servers, marking a new focus by Linden Lab on serving corporate customers.
Under the new project, currently in beta testing and set to go live within several weeks, IBM employees will be able to move freely between the public areas of Second Life and private areas which are hosted behind IBM’s corporate firewall. This will enable the company to have sensitive discussions and disclose proprietary information without having the data pass through Linden Lab’s servers.
Linden Lab’s move into the enterprise software sector comes at a time when the first wave of corporate adoption of Second Life — mostly for marketing and advertising purposes — has largely ended.
IBM has long been a major user of Second Life: more than 6,000 employees have created Second Life avatars, and it signed a pact with Linden Lab last year to explore interoperability between virtual worlds.
The project is structured as a joint development agreement, and no money will change hands, according to Colin Parris, IBM’s vice president for digital convergence.
“We see a need for an enterprise-ready solution that offers the same content creation capabilities but adds new levels of security and scalability,” he said. After an initial phase of using the private Second Life area internally, IBM will expand use to its own customers.
“We’re doing this internally and we’re building the right kind of enterprise grade solution,” Parris told Reuters in a phone interview.
Second Life is increasingly used by corporations and other organizations as a tool for collaboration and telecommunication, but adoption has been hindered by concerns about the platform’s stability and security. The IBM project, while groundbreaking, will not make it easier for companies to access Second Life from behind their own firewalls.
Second Life users who don’t work for IBM will be mostly unaffected by the new project. They will be unable to enter the private, IBM-hosted Second Life areas, much as they cannot currently enter the private areas which are hosted by Linden Lab.
IBM employees will be able to take virtual objects from the public Second Life into the private areas, but not from private areas to public ones.

Logitech subsidiary debuts “3D Mouse” for Second Life
Thu Apr 3, 2008 9:25am PDT
By Eric Reuters
3Dconnexion debuted a made-for-Second Life “3D Mouse” called the SpaceNavigator at the Virtual Worlds 2008 Conference in New York on Thursday.
The device, which looks like a black knob attached to a heavy brushed-steel base, is meant to be used in conjunction with a traditional mouse. By lightly rocking the knob, Second Life’s camera moves accordingly, and pushing the controls parallel to the desktop will make an avatar walk forward or backward. By pulling upwards on the knob a Second Life character will launch into flight. “Second Life is a three dimensional world, but working with a traditional mouse is a very flat experience, and we tried to improve on that,” said Froi Lomoton, the engineer behind the device.
The SpaceNavigator takes a few minutes to get used to but quickly becomes intuitive. Several Second Life-specific features have been programmed, including mouselook (via a mouse button) and 3d camera support to rotate around partially constructed virtual objects while in Second Life’s “build mode.” The mouse is already on the market and can be used with CAD and Photoshop applications, but drivers for the SpaceNavigator to work with Second Life won’t be available for download until later this month, 3Dconnexion executives said.
The SpaceNavigator sells for $60, and works with both Mac and PC. 3Dconnexion is a wholly owned subsidiary of computer peripherals giant Logitech.

Cisco in Second Life to stay
Fri Apr 4, 2008 11:01am PDT
By Eric Reuters
“We’re definitely committed to Second Life,” Cisco’s Jeanette Gibson told Reuters at the Virtual Worlds Conference in New York. “Second Life is here to stay, and so are we.”
Gibson said her company’s considered its “Network Academy Group,” where people could train on Cisco’s products in Second Life, a success and over 1000 Cisco employees were active in the virtual world. She told Reuters that CEO John Chambers would make an appearance in-world on June 24 at Cisco’s sims. The event will be open to the public, and Chambers will do a Q&A with Second Life avatars.

AS I've stated before, I'm David Lane.
I just think that it is important for people to know that Shebe21 is the alias for Monksdream who is a puppet for Steve Carnes, Stephen Carnes. He appears to be a supporter of any stock that dirty CEO is involved in and has inside information on when to buy and sell. He has been compensated my Carnes and people should not fall into his trap.
Thanks friend, for reminding me to iggy him. I will try to in the future now that I have posted this here for anyone that is smart enough to run a search on ihub for Carnes.

>>>>>>>I'll tell you, being on this board and seeing how he wormed his way into being called a friend and then finding out everything that he was doing under our noses to try to hurt this investment was a real eye opener for me. SCHM/RVGD was the biggest learning lesson of ihub for me. I am just glad that others here that went beyond the call of duty showed us what the company was really about.
