In 1907, the Alberta government establishes the Crown Corporation, Alberta Government Telephones (AGT) as a way to take over poor telephone services offered in the province from BELL Canada. AGT was eventually given the responsibility of maintaining Telephone services to the entire province. However, in Edmonton, the city had maintained it's own telephone services under EdTel.
A rift was created between AGT and Edtel in the early 80's when EdTel demaned more long distance revenue from the traffic it generated for AGT. The two companies would eventually reasonable concessions.
In the early 1990's the Alberta government privatized AGT and thus TELUS was created. With the deregulation of the telecom industry in the Alberta province, and throughout Canada, TELUS began it's expansion, first acquiring EdTEL and the merging with BCTel. This subsequently ensured TELUS as the main telecom provider in Western Canada.
TELUS' eastern expansion occurred through it's acquistion of Clearnet (Ontario) and Quebectel of Quebec, thus expanding it's services and coverage to almost the entire nation.
TELUS is the second
largest telecom company in Canada after Bell (BCE).

The company has adopted a "future friendly" philosophy. This means they have increased their services throughout the country to better serve the client base. In addition to better customer service, the company has also adopted many technical committments. Within the wireless industry, TELUS has made "promises" which include: no drop calls (any calls will be credited); fast client services and last but not least a free cell phone every three years.
While TELUS continues to demonstrate financial success from 2006, the company is trying through it's aggressive marketing to attract even more customers while maintaining their current subscribers in anticipation of the WIRELESS NUMBER PROTABILITY being implemented in March 14, 2007.

WNP will allow people to keep their existing phone numbers but transfer between the different service providers in Canada. This means that the customer now has many choices in their service provider. In anticipation of this new move by the CRTC, TELUS has been steadily promoting itself as the company to be with: exception service, exceptional quality and most importantly, the best telecom provider now and after WNP.
There is of course an expectation that TELUS outperforms in 2007. Last year was an exceptional year for TELUS as it saw great growth by generating $8.7 Billion in revenue.
The target for 2007 is approximately a 6% increase in revenue to $9.725 Billion and increasing the EPS from $3.25 to ~$3.75.
Many sector analysis are hestitant to make forcasts about the company potential in 2007 as they wait to see how the WNP will affect the entire industry.
