Yeah, I've been a "short-term" investor for about a year now...volatility is now the name of the game and the hedge funds (IMO) are causing the big daily swings. I think the overall market trend is still going to be down for the next year or so which means even the short term flipping can be dangerous.
The daily volumes of the DJIA aren't even close to what they were a year ago.... http://finance.yahoo.com/q/hp?s=%5EDJI
Jag, I've been careful with everything now a days.
This market has brutalized me, I'm in a holding pattern until I see a glimmer of hope for the future.

Tracking Trouble for the Triple-Levered ETFs
Thursday December 4, 1:44 am ET
By Paul Kedrosky
Paul Kedrosky submits: I’ve written here before about my general dismay with triple-levered exchange-traded funds -– I might have called them basement financial bomb-building kits, but I don’t recall … -– and so I was caught by this graphic in a new Bespoke Premium report.
Neither the triple-levered bullish or bearish ETFs are anywhere close to the daily performance of the underlying index, which is the Russell Energy. And that’s not the only sector with massive (levered) tracking errors.
>Thanks for the heads up on ERX. I believe 2009 will be a lackluster year, a year which we can accumulate.
thanks,
sumi
I hope so too sumi.
Been enjoying the info you have posted about oil/energy. I'm an energy bug and thus find the info useful.
I'm accumulating shares of ERX on the dips between 30-34. I'm a beliver when the realities of peak oil hit home, oil and gas stock will rocket. Since ERX is a leveraged ETF, "To the moon!"
>Bought 1,200 shares of DNN at 77 cents this week.
Can you believe the markets?
Hope that I didn't overpay.

GOLD 802$ , OIL 51.05$ ...uranium going up ?
You don't want evil governments like Saudi and Iran tomake too much money either.
knight,
yes, it's pretty crazy how low oil has dropped recently. it could be due to the (relatively) strong dollar, a recession kicking in or a number of other factors (unknown to me). i'm thinking these cheap-o oil prices actually reduce the demand for uranium exploration and production in the near term. hopefully, that'll change soon.

craig.
call it depression adjustment of price.
Uranium up $5, interesting

for those of you who don't know and do not have your eyes plastered to cnbc on a minute-by-minute basis, they are airing a special on nuclear power tonight at 9pm et. it could be part of the reason why the stocks are generally doing well today.

CNBC’S "THE NUCLEAR OPTION" REPORTED BY MELISSA FRANCIS PREMIERES ON TUESDAY, OCTOBER 14TH AT 9PM & 1AM
IS AMERICA READY FOR NUCLEAR POWER?
CNBC'S "THE NUCLEAR OPTION" REPORTED BY MELISSA FRANCIS PREMIERES ON TUESDAY, OCTOBER 14th AT 9PM & 1AM ET
A CNBC ORIGINAL DOCUMENTARY REPORTED BY MELISSA FRANCIS FOCUSING ON ONE POTENTIAL SOLUTION TO AMERICA'S ENERGY CRISIS.
ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J., October 7, 2008 - America is now using more energy than at any other time in our nation's history. The price of crude is skyrocketing and the push to find alternatives to fossil fuels has never been greater. Is The Time Finally Right For Nuclear Power?
CNBC presents "The Nuclear Option," an original one-hour documentary reported by Melissa Francis, a veteran energy correspondent and anchor of CNBC's "The Call," airing on Tuesday October 14th at 9PM & 1AM ET. The program offers an all-access, behind-the-scenes look at the push to make nuclear energy a true alternative fuel of the future. Francis talks to Dale Klein, chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission about this race for the next nuclear energy plant in the U.S. and safety issues, as well as Edwin Lyman of the Union of Concerned Scientists, a critic of the expansion due to worries about security.
"The Nuclear Option" also takes viewers on an unprecedented tour of Three Mile Island, the site of the worst nuclear accident in American history and the Pennsylvania town it calls home. In addition, the program focuses on two small towns, Bay City, Texas located deep in oil country, and Calvert County, Maryland, to explore their battle for approval of the first new nuclear plant in the United States in more than thirty years. Right now, more than 20-cities across America are seeking approval for nuclear plants.
This comprehensive hour will also take a look at France where 80-percent of this tiny European country's energy comes from nuclear power. Additionally, the report offers a rare look at the construction of France's 59th nuclear facility located on the Normandy Coast. Francis interviews French Senator Gean Francius Le Grand and Anne Leauvergeon CEO of Areva, the company behind France's nuclear program. Questions posited include: What do the French know that we don't? Why are the Europeans so willing to accept nuclear energy? And what are they doing about the most pressing problem related to atomic energy – waste?
"The Nuclear Option" will also introduce viewers to the man who co-founded Greenpeace and was right in the middle of the No-Nukes movement in the 1970's. Today this environmentalist, Patrick Moore, supports America's nuclear revival and tells CNBC why he's made this stunning about face.
For more information including web extras and extended video clips, log onto http://thenuclearoption.cnbc.com .
"The Nuclear Option" will re-air on Sunday, October 19 at 10PM ET on CNBC.
Sandy Cannold is the executive producer of "The Nuclear Option." Justin Solomon is the producer. Sam Wright is the coordinating producer. Jonathan Wald is the senior vice president, Business News at CNBC.
looks good, frenchee. the fundamental change in market psychology caused by the government's intervention... however socialist it is... could mark a bottom here. "gamechanger" is the word that comes to mind. we shall see.

thanks, Awro. i was lazy and actually just looked on the yahoo urre page only to find the same tidbit of info...

"Among today's biggest gainers as of midday are Uranium Resources Inc. (NasdaqGM:URRE - News), which is increasingly the subject of takeover rumors and increased buying by money manager David Dreman's firm Dreman Value Management."
regards,
craig.
Bloomberg-tv reported today that URRE might be a takeover target and the stock price might be worth as much as $20/share.
Cheers :)
Awro.
urre is going crazy today on monster volume and i'm not sure why. if anyone has any ideas or reasons, i'd love to hear 'em.
exploration companies are still down near their lows, so there's not much to be excited about... yet :).

Shaw Group shares drop after downgrade
Associated Press 08.14.08, 6:16 PM ET
Citi Investment Research analyst downgraded the stock, saying nuclear power plant construction may not surge with oil prices.
Analyst Brian Chin put a "Sell" rating on the shares, saying in a client note that the Shaw Group (nyse: SGR - news - people ) "has held up in spite of a crushing valuation revision downwards" for the engineering and construction peer group because most investors "think the nuclear story is somehow removed from the commodities bubble."
"Wrong view, in our opinion," Chin said. "So if commodity prices continue to roll, the nuclear renaissance story will increasingly look like a nuclear vaporware story."
The Shaw Group needs to win more U.S. contracts "to simply trade sideways," he said.

>Great call on DNN. I had limited funds Monday morning and bought 640 shares at $5.15; pulled the trigger too soon, but things are working out so far today.
thanks,

Hey frenchee....just a personal investing rule, but I try to stay away from Russia or Africa mining or oil plays....and most individual China stocks. Market has me gun-shy right now with dropping commodity prices, etc.....but BPH would be one I'd look for a bottom once the economy direction is better known.. Good luck to you!
Hi Jagman,
The setup I'm waiting for is conditional. If the ADX is > 20 and trending up, I'm waiting for a decisive break of the downtrend line drawn on my previous chart. If the ADX is trending down, a decisive close > 5-day price EMA is the short-term buy signal for me.
Hope things are going well for you. FWIW, my current short-term speculation is MTL. I like the risk/reward set up here.

DNN....I would wait until after the earnings report, depending on your risk level... Their one analyst shows -0.03 estimate...

World Preps for a Nuclear Renaissance: Huge Boost in Uranium Exploration
Posted July 25th, 2008 at 3.50pm in Energy and Environment.
THE HERITAGE FOUNDATION
http://blog.heritage.org/2008/07/25/world-preps-for-a-nuclear-renaissance-huge-boost-in-uranium-exploration/
More evidence arises that the world is preparing for a global nuclear renaissance: although the spot price for uranium fell, global exploration for 2007 totaled $718 million according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development Nuclear Energy Agency and the International Atomic Energy Agency. To put this number in perspective, while it might be less than the 2006 total of $774,K percent more than in 2004.
Australia has considerably uranium exploration; after spending only $3 million in 2002, the country spent $60 million in 2006 alone on exploration and development.
Thank goodness someone is mining uranium because the U.S. sure isn’t. Instead, it is allowing outdated bureaucracy and regulation to keep it energy dependent. Take the state of Virginia, for example. The nation’s largest known uranium deposit was discovered there in the 1980s. The owner of that land recently explored the possibility of mining the approximately $10 billion worth of uranium believed to be on the site. Despite the fact that uranium has been mined safely around the world for decades, including in New Mexico, Nebraska, Utah, and Wyoming, Virginia bureaucrats have decided to prohibit land owners from even studying the viability of mining.
There are similar stories throughout the United States.
Natural uranium is critical in the production of electricity through nuclear power. It is found throughout the world, but quantities sufficient to be mined economically are limited to a few known regions. Canada has the highest grade uranium while Australia has the most. Kazakhstan, South Africa, Niger, Namibia, and Brazil also have significant deposits. The U.S. has about 3 percent-4 percent of the world’s known uranium and produces about 4.3 percent of the world’s supply despite operating about one-quarter of the world’s commercial power reactors.
Uranium is an important and necessary component of nuclear energy, and firms choosing to pursue uranium mining should not be unnecessarily burdened by fear and government overreach. Uranium mining occurs all over the world, and the United States should realize its potential to increase America’s share of the uranium mining sector.

Areva's Unhealthy Glow
Lionel Laurent, 07.18.08, 11:50 AM ET
(These accidents always hurt the industry)
LONDON -
The French public is suffering from a crisis of confidence in nuclear energy, now that power firm Areva has revealed a second leak in ten days at one of its sites. Though it might not mean much for Areva's bottom line, the political consequences for chief executive Anne Lauvergeon could be painful.
"It's been a pretty big scandal, there's been a fair amount of outcry," said Alex Barnett, a Paris-based analyst for Jefferies. "If it escalates at all, Anne Lauvergeon will be in the firing line."
Shares in Areva fell 1.8%, to 772.05 euros ($1,223.23), during afternoon trading in Paris, while rival Alstom fell 2.7%, to 71.61 euros ($113.46). Although media attention on the leaks is not expected to have an effect on business, Areva is majority-owned by the French government, and it benefits from president Nicolas Sarkozy's tireless promotion at home and abroad. (See "Sarkozy's China Visit A Boon For Airbus, Areva")
Areva has already fired the head of its Socatri uranium recovery factory, following a leak of 74.0 kilograms (163.1 pounds) of liquid containing uranium last week into the water supply, but on Friday a new leak was reported at another factory in south-eastern France. According to Areva, the latest incident is somewhat less serious--this time, the uranium leak was restricted to the site and had no impact on the environment. But nuclear energy is now getting a bad name precisely at a time when the French government is singing its praises.
"This is a fault on an industrial level, but also on a global level," said Frederic Milliard, head of the nuclear campaign for Greenpeace in France, "in an era of re-launch, or attempted re-launch, for nuclear energy." He told Forbes.com that the view of nuclear energy as clean, given that it emits no carbon dioxide, was now being seriously questioned in the context of pollution and the environment.
Spokespeople for Areva and France's nuclear watchdog were unavailable for comment on Friday. The government said in a statement that the Areva factory had reported a ruptured pipe on Thursday, and that it apparently had been leaking "for several years."

URRE is definitely one to watch. It moves VERY FAST. A GREAT TRADER THERE. thanks Craig. ~BLUe
good to see you here, BHS. agreed, urre is looking good:
http://stockcharts.com/h-sc/ui?s=urre&p=D&yr=0&mn=3&dy=0&id=p11829178935
macd crossover, higher lows ($2.33 vs. $2.17), volume picking up a bit. fundamentally speaking, urre's margins improve as the uranium spot price increases. we need to bust out above the 20-dma on good volume and stay there.
regards,
craig.
