PREVIEW-Drybulk earnings to be mostly in line with expectations

BANGALORE, July 27 (Reuters) - Most drybulk shippers are expected to report second-quarter earnings in line with Wall Street expectations, as a high degree of locked-in long-term contracts prevent them from taking advantage of the recent spike in charter rates.

Drybulk shipping companies -- hit by the crash in charter rates for their ships due to the slump in demand for commodities such as iron ore and coal -- have been looking at increasing the long-term contract coverage for their shipping fleet and reduce the spot market exposure.

However, charter rates have been rebounding from their lows.

This earnings season will be kicked off with Genco Shipping & Trading Ltd (GNK.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) reporting its second-quarter results on July 29.

"I think the quarter was pretty strong. The volume of iron ore into China was pretty much at a record high and that had a real impact on cape vessels. In the second half of the quarter, rates really started to rise significantly," analyst Natasha Boyden of Cantor Fitzgerald said. Boyden noted that the significant amount of port congestion also added to keeping rates high.

"Capesize rates, in particular, were nearly double the first quarter levels," Boyden wrote in a note to clients.

Capesize vessels are the largest type of ships that are used to transport commodities such as iron ore and coal.

Dayrates for capesize ships averaged about $40,000 a day for the second quarter, compared with the first quarter average of about $20,000.

However, while day rates have gone up, drybulk shippers' exposure to the spot market has shrunk.

"If you looked at the beginning of April, the average contract coverage for the year was 70 percent. Right now for the full year 2009, these guys have on average across the industry 77 percent contract coverage " analyst Scott Burk of Oppenheimer said over the phone. Excel Maritime (EXM.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) and Dryships (DRYS.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) will be the most likely to beat estimates as they have the highest exposure to the spot market.

Burk noted that 35 percent of Excel Maritime's fleet is exposed to the spot market, followed by Dryships (DRYS.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), which has a 32 percent spot exposure. The least likely to beat estimates will be Diana Shipping Inc (DSX.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz). The company has the lowest spot exposure among its peers with 95 percent of its fleet under contract coverage, Burk noted.

BETTER Q3?

While second-quarter earnings are expected to be strong, third-quarter profits are expected to be better than second quarter.

"I think third quarter will probably end up being on average better than second quarter for the drybulk guys," FBR Capital Markets analyst Rob MacKenzie said.

MacKenzie expects cape rates to average about $50,000 in the third quarter -- higher than the $40,000 averaged in the second quarter.

However, rates are expected to trend down after that.

"Rates will continue to fall because there is just way too much supply of ships in the market and coming -- for the demand there is for bulk cargoes. We are seeing port congestion lighten up in Australia and so on, and that is going to put more downward pressure on cape rates," MacKenzie said.

Oppenheimer's Burk agrees that there is good potential that the third-quarter is going to be stronger.

However, its not going to be a huge increase because most of these guys have their rates already essentially locked in, he added.

Burk said that, for the industry as a whole, he is looking to get indications of the sustainability of iron ore imports into China and also if high day rates have caused the order book to solidify. (Editing by Jarshad Kakkrakandy)

Ford Favorables Hold Steady, GM, Chrysler Down

Most Americans still have a much higher opinion of the one Big Three automaker who didn’t ask for a government bailout, while views of the two companies that did get bailed out continue to go down.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 66% of Americans now have at a somewhat favorable opinion of Ford, including 22% whose view is very favorable. Ford is seen unfavorably by 26%, with six percent (6%) very unfavorable. These numbers are largely unchanged from May.

By contrast, General Motors is viewed favorably by 38%, down six points from May, and unfavorably by 56%, up eight points from the previous survey. The “nays” feel more strongly now, too: Twenty-one percent (21%) have a very unfavorable opinion of GM, compared to nine percent (9%) whose view is very favorable.

For Chrysler, the news is similar. Thirty-four percent (34%) have a somewhat favorable view, down six from May, while 55% see the company unfavorably, up three points. Those with a strongly unfavorable view outnumber those who are strongly favorable by more than three-to-one – 23% to seven percent (7%).

These views may be translating into consumer buying habits, too, with 46% of Americans now saying they are more likely to buy a car from Ford because it did not seek a government bailout. Only 17% say they are more likely to buy a GM car now that the company has emerged from bankruptcy with government help, but 22% say they are less likely to do so.

The May survey actually marked a rebound of sorts for GM and Chrysler. The new favorables and unfavorables are more in line with the findings in March and reflect the downward trend evident since the two automakers first began seeking bailout help.

But Americans also now consider the automobile industry more important to the overall U.S. economy than they have in recent surveys.

Eighty-two percent (82%) say the domestic auto industry is at least somewhat important to the economy. For 40%, it’s very important, up eight points from late March and the highest finding this year.

Of course, in March 2007, 49% said the auto industry was very important to the overall economy.

Just 12% now say the automobile industry is not important to the economy, with three percent (3%) who view it as not at all important.

Generally speaking, Democrats have been more supportive of the auto bailouts than Republicans or adults not affiliated with either political party. So it’s not surprising that the same partisan divide is evident in the favorables. While all three groups like Ford more, Democrats have a higher opinion of GM and Chrysler than Republicans and unaffiliateds.

Men are more enthusiastic about Ford than women, while both feel largely the same about the other two automakers.

Investors by more than a two-to-one margin have a more favorable opinion of Ford than of GM and Chrysler.

Looking back, 60% of voters believe the auto bailouts were a bad idea.

Just 33% of Americans think it is even somewhat likely that the federal government will ever get back the $50 billion in bailout funds it has advanced to General Motors to keep the company in business.

Eighty percent (80%) of voters want the government to sell its stake in General Motors and Chrysler as soon as possible.

Twenty-eight percent (28%) of Americans say it’s at least somewhat likely that they will be personally impacted by the closing of GM and Chrysler dealerships across the country as part of their reorganization plans.

Western Potash Corp. Intersects over Twenty Five Metres of Potash Mineralization in Fourth Well 12.5 km South of First Mineralized Well

VANCOUVER -- Western Potash Corp. (the "Company") (TSX.V: WPX, FSE: AHE) is pleased to announce that the fourth well on the Milestone property has intersected strong potash mineralization over a thicker package of potash members in a combined mineralized width of over 25 meters. These results further indicate that the extent of the mineralized potash beds spans at least 12.5 km south from the first well, Milestone-001, reported previously. The Company's wholly-owned Milestone property, comprising 500 square km in area, is located approximately 30 km southeast of Regina, and is southeast of Mosaic's Belle Plaine Mine, one of the largest producing potash solution mines in the world.

Coring of the Milestone - 004 well intersected the Prairie Evaporite Formation at a vertical depth of 1,707.5 m. Visual geological evaluation of the core in conjunction with down-hole gamma ray logs indicate strong potash grades, very low carnallite content, and very promising minimum formation temperatures of 61deg C within the two upper members, with some carnallite present in the Esterhazy member. The magnitude of the gamma ray log from this well suggests that higher potash grades exist within the Patience Lake and Belle Plaine members as compared to previous results. The following table details the thicknesses of the potash mineralized intercepts, indicating strong potash tenor in the down-hole gamma ray logs:

The well presently reported is located approximately 12.5 km and 7.5 km to the southeast of wells 001 and 002 respectively, which were reported previously. All drill intercepts noted in this release are considered the true thickness of the mineralization; as the salt beds are relatively flat-lying and down-hole directional surveys indicate the hole was essentially vertical upon intersecting the salt and potash sequences.

The Company is pleased to see the presence, thicknesses and indicated grade of the potash beds in this fourth well, when considered in conjunction with the results reported for the first three wells. The Company feels that the thicknesses and grades obtained by geochemical sampling and down-hole gamma ray logging are consistent with those mined at the Belle Plaine solution mine and that it has now demonstrated regional continuity of all three potash members, spanning a strike length of over 12.5km, between the first and fourth wells.

Minimum temperature readings of 61deg C were recorded from this well, indicating favorable conditions for an envisioned solution mining and recovery process. These results combined with temperature readings from the previous wells, ranging between 61deg C to 65.5deg C, have confirmed the presence of the heat anomaly that attracted the Company to this project area.

The Company re-iterates that it considers formation temperature a key parameter in solution mining economics, offering advantages in solution mass-balance and savings in capital, energy and processing costs. In other words, a mine with higher temperatures will be more efficient as the solubility of potash increases with temperature such that the higher the formation temperature, the higher the yield of potassium chloride in the brine solution to be processed for potash recovery. A solution mine, accessing a higher formation temperature resource, will produce more potassium chloride in solution than an operation tapping an equivalent resource at lower formation temperatures.

The samples extracted from the three potash members will now be submitted for analysis at the SRC laboratory in Saskatoon. Results are expected to be obtained within 4 to 6 weeks.

Expanding Program:

After a review of the encouraging results from the first phase of drilling on the Milestone property, the board of Western Potash has approved an increase in the current exploration budget in order to expand the drill program and subsequently begin an initial resource calculation. The aim of the extended exploration program will be to further define the grade, and size of the potash deposit on the property. The next phase of exploration will include an additional 4 well drill program and additional 2D and 3D seismic surveys. The budget for this work is estimated at $8.5 million CAD. It is expected that the completion of this 2nd phase will allow the Company to commission an independent 43-101 resource estimate on the Milestone property. Drilling on the Milestone property will recommence as soon as all the permits are in place which is expected prior to the end of August.

Matachewan First Nation Signs Impact and Benefits Agreement with Northgate Minerals Corporation

VANCOUVER, July 2 /CNW/ - Northgate Minerals Corporation (TSX: NGX, NYSE Amex: NXG) and the Matachewan First Nation are pleased to announce that the parties have signed an Impact and Benefits Agreement ("IBA") for the Young-Davidson project located in Matachewan, Ontario. The IBA establishes a framework for the permitting and development of a mine on the Young-Davidson property and sets out a variety of co-operative initiatives between the Matachewan First Nation and Northgate relating to employment, training and other business opportunities in connection with the project. The IBA follows on the Memorandum of Understanding, which was signed in March 2008.

A formal signing ceremony on the Matachewan First Nation Reserve will take place later this month to commemorate the continuation of the historic relationship between Northgate and the Matachewan First Nation that is based upon trust and mutual respect.

The Young-Davidson property is located in the Abitibi greenstone belt of northern Ontario, 60 kilometres west of Kirkland Lake. The property has hosted two past producing mines, both with track records of successful mining during the mid-20th century. Since its acquisition of the property in late 2005, Northgate has invested $55 million in surface diamond drilling and underground development, which has increased the total measured and indicated gold resources on the property to 3.3 million ounces as at December 31, 2008. Pre-feasibility work, which began earlier this year, is now largely complete and Northgate will announce the results of this work later this month followed by a revised NI 43-101 Technical Report filed on SEDAR in August.
