@TickerStock: “@BloombergTV: BREAKING: Spreadtrum to be bought by Tsinghua Group for $1.78 billion” $SPRD
Christmas came early :)
9:41 AM Spreadtrum Communications (SPRD) declares $0.10/share quarterly dividend, 5.3% increase from prior dividend of $0.095. Forward yield 1.55%. For shareholders of record July 09. Payable July 24. Ex-div date July 07.
7:12 AM Spreadtrum Communications (SPRD) announces receipt of a non-binding $28.50/share cash acquisition offer from Tsinghua Holdings. Shares +7.6% premarket to $23.98. Kudos to SA Pro's Ashraf Eassa who just two weeks ago - with the stock under $20 - said he saw 55% upside in the shares.
Anyone got a take on this one as to which way sprd's going? ta. .. nic
9:56 AM Bank of America upgrades Spreadtrum Communications (SPRD +2%) to Buy and raises price target to $30 from $18. The company declared a $0.10/share dividend earlier in the week.
9:07 AM Spreadtrum Communications, Inc (ADR) (SPRD) declares $0.10/share quarterly dividend. Forward yield 2.19%. For shareholders of record Apr. 10. Payable Apr. 25. Ex-div date Apr. 08.
$17.51? Suppose that makes those feel good that bought premarket 2 days ago at $18 only to see regular hours finish at just over $15. Whoo woulda thunk it? .. nic
Well nic, that big spike didn't last long... as usual. .. nic

I don't know when either, not worth trying to figure it. investors get real spooked everytime another Chinese company gets named for funny bookkeeping, let alone lull in microchip stocks.
Yep, guess so as I should have waited until next month to buy in. Don't know when you bought, but it had to be quite some time ago. Looking back, sprd closed at $23.05 on October 31. Not much has actually happened, but exactly 3 months later, spred is down over 32% or $7.45 with no support seemingly in sight. Yuck!!! Dang Chinese hot dog companies! .. nic
at least I didn't bet the farm on them. Thanks for alerting me. Believe it or not, I'm still green on them. LOL, maybe I ought to sell mine to you.
Down, down, down. Seems no support or strength is evident yet. Maybe I'll add some if it drops much lower. .. nic
I'm still way green on it, but it is definitely sitting a lot lower than it's peak. Pretty ugly drop today.
Thinking about exiting this one as it seems no money can be made on it lately. Sigh!!!!
8:22 AM Spreadtrum Communications (SPRD) declares $0.10/share quarterly dividend, in line with previous. Forward yield 2.39%. For shareholders of record Dec. 24. Payable Dec. 31. Ex-div date Dec. 20.
1:47 PM Baseband chipmakers Spreadtrum (SPRD -6.3%), Marvell (MRVL -1.9%), and Sequans (SQNS -1%) are all off. Chinese media reports only 1 of 9 companies taking part in government tests for 4G TD-LTE baseband chips - a group including the aforementioned names - fully met government standards in a test. China Mobile is plotting a commercial TD-LTE launch, but its timing depends on approval by a government that may chose to bide its time in so that more subscribers are racked up for CHL's 3G network, which relies on home-grown TD-SCDMA tech.
Looks like $11 commin. .. nic
No support.. Looks like this one's gotta go for a few months. Maybe come back and play later .. nic
prediction... fical cliff $11
no fiscal cliff.............$22
Oh well, we'll see .. nic
LOL, that's about it. Apple sunk the whole sector, the re-election sank the whole market. Once the panic set in when it started diving, the MMs push the envelope and get it as far down and panicked as much as possible. Bastards.
POS stock. Good earnings report with no additional news and the stock keeps falling many multiple times the rate of the general market. I'm certain the stock will at some point level off without any reason at all. .. nic
4:18 PM Spreadtrum Communications (SPRD): Q3 EPS of $0.56 beats by $0.07. Revenue of $187.9M (+1.7% Y/Y) beats by $16M.
Decent strength in a down market. What will a 10 cent dividend do? .. nic

thanks for the insight nicmar. I love it when people are honest.
johnson. For the last few months, I have been buying on the dips and selling on the highs and I have done very well since sprd had been running to near 20 and falling back to near 17 on a fairly consistance pattern.
I did however get caught a bit as I held through the earnings report where I had bought in the 19s and then came the dive. I would have been ok except in the recovery, I sold a bit too quickly because I felt the stock would again hit highs in the 18s. The highs just happened to be higher (near 20) than I thought they would be.
I've regained most from my high point other than maybe down 30 to 40 cents which can be easily recovered unless sprd takes a dive as I'm currently holding quite a few shares in the 18s. This one has been good to me other than the bad earnings spill. I am thinking about going for a longer hold on half my shares and trading the other half just in case this one runs to the 20s.
Hope you do very well and if you decide to trade a bit, best of luck on hitting the highs. Maybe hold some longs just in case. .. nic
thanks, been holding long for a few months, a growth play. Definitely way in the green for me, even with the pullback. Thought about taking some profits and selling a few last week, but changed my mind.
Good post, but looks like the sp has temporarilly rallied. .. nic
10:27 AM Spreadtrum (SPRD -1.7%) trades lower after receiving a downgrade to Neutral from Chardan Capital; the firm cites power amplifier shortages (presumably for TD-SCDMA 3G devices) and growing competitive pressures. Power amplifier vendor RF Micro Devices (RFMD -2%), which has decent Chinese exposure, is also lower. It was only a week ago that Avian issued a bullish note on Spreadtrum that touted the chipmaker's design win activity.
UPDATE 2-Apple share of China smartphone mkt almost halved in Q2 - IDC
4:55 AM 8/24/2012 - Reuters
* Apple Q2 China smartphone mkt share 10 pct vs 19 pct in Q1
* Samsung still leads, with 19 pct mkt share vs 21 pct in Q1
* Chinese brands - Lenovo, ZTE - gain traction - IDC
* Smartphones took 51 pct of overall mobile mkt in Q2 - IDC
By Lee Chyen Yee
Aug 24 (Reuters) - Apple Inc's share of China's smartphone market almost halved to 10 percent in April-June as buyers waited for the next iPhone model - expected later this year - or switched brands, data from industry research firm IDC showed on Friday.
China, Apple's second-largest market, is set to overtake the United States as the world's biggest smartphone market this year, with demand driven by generous handset subsidies offered by the three main carriers, increasingly tech-savvy consumers and more feature-packed and affordable products.
For the first time, smartphone shipments in China overtook feature phones in the second quarter, with local brands Lenovo Group Ltd and ZTE Corp pushing Apple to fourth place from second, the IDC data showed.
Total April-June smartphone shipments rose to 44 million, accounting for 51 percent of China's total mobile shipments of 87 million, IDC said.
"There are two things in play," said IDC analyst TZ Wong, referring to Apple's drop in ranking and market share. "One is seasonal, people know the new phone is coming. And the second is that the alternatives are becoming much more attractive than a year ago. The iPhone didn't change much over the year."
South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co Ltd retained its lead in the Chinese smartphone market with a share of 19 percent, though this was down from 21 percent in the previous quarter, according to the IDC data.
Lenovo, the world's No.2 vendor of personal computers which makes the LePhone, climbed to second place and increased its China market share to 11 percent from a single-digit percentage in the first quarter when it was ranked 7th, the data showed. Local rival Huawei Technologies Co Ltd ranked fifth.
Data from Gartner, another research firm, showed Apple's market share fell to 12 percent in the second quarter from 17 percent in the previous three months, though it kept its No.2 ranking, according to a report by Nomura Securities.
CHIPS FOR CHINA
U.S. chipmakers such as Qualcomm Inc have been trying to capture a larger slice of a booming market that has long been dominated by Taiwan's Mediatek Inc and China's Spreadtrum Communications Inc, by offering chipsets and solutions catered to Chinese vendors.
Recently launched Chinese smartphones packed with Qualcomm's Snapdragon chips include Huawei's G330D and Xiaomi Technology's MI2.
"It's such an important market because of the volume and the growth rate, which are so attractive for chipset vendors ... so we're seeing a lot of competition," said James Shen, Qualcomm's vice president for business development.
In the overall mobile phone market in China, which includes smartphones and feature phones, Samsung, Nokia and ZTE top the rankings for the second quarter, IDC said.
IDC's Wong said it was inevitable that Chinese brands would gradually gain more share due to their aggressive marketing and close ties with local carriers China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom.
"In the mid- to long-term, it's very possible they will start to dominate four of the top five (rankings), leaving Samsung as the only one standing. At that point, even Samsung will start to feel the pressure."
Maybe earnings tomorrow. eeeeeee

11:22 AM Spreadtrum (SPRD +3.5%) rallies following a report claiming it has secured a number of design wins for Samsung TD-SCDMA 3G phones that will be sold by China Mobile. Digitimes adds the design wins have come at the expense of archrival MediaTek, and that Spreadtrum has a lead on MediaTek in developing quad-core processors and 4G baseband chips. Marvell (MRVL) is also a major rival in the TD-SCDMA market. The report comes as Spreadtrum announces a design win for a Huawei phone. SEEKING ALPHA
ontoprofit. It's also very likely muddy, by taking a short position and publicising an "open letter" to the board of sprd will help muddy achieve their goal. A very self severing letter.

SHANGHAI -- Spreadtrum Communications, Inc. announced Tuesday (June 19th) that the company’s TD-SCDMA baseband modem, the SC8803G, and its RF transceiver, the SR3200, are designed into Samsung's latest TD-SCDMA smartphone – Galaxy S III(GT-I9308). The Samsung model, featuring TD-SCDMA modem as required by China Mobile – is shipping now.
Spreadtrum pulled off a huge turnaround in 2011, by leveraging its lead in the TD-SCDMA market in China.
In 2011, the company made $674 million in revenue, 95 percent increase over the previous year. Spreadtrum is expecting revenues to grow to more than $700 million this year.
In a recent interview with EE Times, Leo Li, president and CEO of Spreadtrum, said that Spreadtrum has grabbed five design wins among six TD-SCDMA smartphone models selected by China Mobile in May, 2012. A “MediaTek chip got designed into only one model,” noted Li, referring to its Taiwan chip rival.
